Green schools are not only environmentally friendly
but also generate cost savings in the form of reduced
water andenergy use.
We can make green living a part of everyday school life
by considering the environment in everything we do.
From energy efficiency to recycling, here are a few tips
tomake our schoolmore eco friendlyandsustainable.
Encourage pupils to walk
Use footprints to reduce your carbon footprint! Introduce
“walking buses” so that children can make the journey
together, enjoying exercise, fresh air and a green way to start
theday.
Teachers shouldalso apply someeco-friendly
strategies
A green school needs to start with its staff. Teachers should cut down
on the paper they use by keeping electronic copies instead of printing
things out. Little habits all add up, like making sure we switch off our
monitors when not in use.
Eat green
Take a look at your school dinners. Are they sourced ethically and
locally? Check the provenance of your meat, eggs and dairy products
and switch to free range and organic where you can. Vegetarian meals
have a lower carbon footprint so consider a meat-free day once a
week.
Recycle
Sort rubbish at school and place
recycling bins in the playground.
Soon it will be second nature for
pupils to throw their apple cores
into the food waste and their
used paper sheets in the
recycling bins.
Growgreen
Let the children get friendlywithnaturalworld. Is it possible
to dedicate a patch of the schoolgrounds to growing
vegetables? If space is short, consider starting a class wormery
or growing seeds in pots.
New old things
Be creative - makeyour pupils bring inold objects and tell
themto upcycle theseold thingsinto a new creation. Even
rubbish can get a newlifeoncein a while.
Save energy
Turn off lights and shut down computers at the end of the day. Keep
doors shut to stop heat escaping and don’t block heaters. Check the
energy consumption of your appliances and make it a major
consideration when buying new ones. For environmentally-friendly
classrooms, make sure they are well insulated and use sustainable
materials.
Cleanand eco-friendly
What products are used to clean your school buildings?
Replace these with natural, eco-friendly solutions - it is a
child-friendly move thatwill helpreduce asthmaand allergy.
Lessonsoutside
Whatever the subject, there’s always something to learn about the
environment. Calculating food miles, measuring rainfall, getting to
know some new English vocabulary connected with the environment
and its protection as well as learning about landfill are some
fascinating ways to bring environmental concerns to life in the
classroom.
Spread awareness among thelocal community
Behaving eco-friendly and living green lifestyle
is all about taking care of the world around us
– and that starts in the community. Spread
awareness of eco-friendly behaviour among
the community by holding fundraising events
or encouraging pupils to volunteer.
Other energy saving ideas whichyou can
introduceinyour school
• Insulate ceilings and walls where possible
• Encourage student energy monitors to check that lights are not left on unnecessarily.
• Clean fluorescent tubes and covers and remove tubes in situations where there is
excessive lighting
• Replace incandescent globes with compact fluorescent lamps
• Replace older style 40 watt fluorescent tubes (40mmdiameter) with thinner (26mm)36
watt tubes
• Install movement sensors and lighting controls to avoid leaving lights on continually
• Activate energy saving features on appliances such as computers, photocopiers, printers.
• Install timers to ensure they are turned off at the end of the day and during holiday
periods.
