The document discusses the need for a coordinated advising approach across departments to support student progression and retention, especially for marginalized populations. It proposes advising principles of building relationships, empowering self-directed learning, providing seamless support, and taking a holistic view. The advising approach aims to guide students through transitions into, through, and beyond their programs using pathways advisors, success advisors, and program coordinators. Tools like an advising dashboard and local retention teams are suggested to facilitate collaboration.

Syracuse University is one of the foremost contributors when it comes to the advancement of theories on retention and student success. By recognizing that true undergraduate excellence is achieved when attention is paid to the “whole student,” they are working collaboratively to create the conditions that support teaching, learning, retention, and success. One of the indispensable fundamentals of creating a successful student success initiative is buy-in from all of the stakeholders. Every job changes over time but what happens to roles and the people in them when change becomes necessary due to the accelerated evolution of an academic department? What are the intrinsic differences between generalist and specialist roles? What are their specific advantages and disadvantages? Which model works best for professional services staff, students and faculty? This interactive workshop will take participants through the process of acknowledging that change is sometimes necessary, determining what form that change should take and implementing those new structures. It will focus on the personal implications of change and how to retain control of a potentially difficult process; how communications with various stakeholders are managed; and how those involved need to be truly engaged and supportive of the process so that an effective team can be formed.
Using a real-life example to better explore these issues, participants will gain an understanding of the causes, implications and consequences of large-scale change and restructure. They will be encouraged to think about the structure of their own teams and to use the lessons we learned to help them identify any possible solutions to problems they may be facing.

Rethinking the ‘flip’: Exploring innovative teaching practices in the univers...Katya Pechenkina, PhD
This paper discusses preliminary results of a study with twenty teaching academics who use the elements of flipped classroom in their teaching. Grounded in recent literature on blended learning, flipped classroom and innovative teaching, this paper draws on the thematic analysis of rich qualitative interview data to offer new insights into teaching tactics academics devise to boost student engagement, motivation and creativity. The flipped classroom elements taken up by the academics in this study range from the ‘traditional’ flip concept where lectures or segments of lectures are replaced by independent study components (both technology-enabled or not) to a more hybridised teaching tactics allowing for greater personalisation of learning, to a holistic re-think and re-design of students’ learning experiences achieved by introducing multiple elements of the flipped pedagogy. Based on this data, recommendations are offered on how to achieve an impactful flipped design.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
