As part of IFPRI Egypt Seminar in partnership with the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies: "Unleashing Untapped Potential of Industrial Clusters in Egypt"
In a drive to eliminate underground utility strikes and to avoid damage to underground assets, AECOM Civil and Infrastructure UAE, partnered with Al Naboodah Contracting Co LLC & developed a programme using a threefold approach of I) Visual impact training on Cable Avoidance Tool - ii) Theatre play to demonstrate how strikes occur and best practices iii) Workshop sessions, to reduce the risk of utility strikes across UAE region.
Genre of Visual impact training was set out focusing on the following aspects:
1.Getting accurate records of all utilities before works commence.
2.Properly locating all assets on site.
3.Following excavation procedures correctly.
4.Having properly trained personnel using correct tools.
5.Working in an appropriate environment
The Visual impact training was performed on a replica of a construction site that was constructed in Al Naboodah training school with dummy cables and other underground utility services .
Play, comprised of dialogues between characters (Foreman/Workers/Surveyor/Engineer/CAT supplier) and was performed at a variety of levels. The play conveys all emotions and have very dramatic conflicts on how to ensure the highest standards of safety and best practices when carrying out work on the vital services for our business. CAT tool supplier was involved in the Visual impact training , he demonstrated how to use the cable locator correctly and its limitations in identifying services.
Workshop session with the attendees were arranged, lot of recommendations were put forward by most of them. Many of them said, it gives a better understanding of when utility strikes occur, what causes them and their costs.
The whole programme delivered the message of "Understanding risk is the key to managing it " whether your project is small or large underground utility strikes can result in injury or death, economic loss & business interruptions. Now its up to us how we perceive the message and implement in site.

He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
