Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is commonly abused and can have both pharmacological and chronic effects. In small doses it relieves anxiety but larger doses cause impaired coordination and judgment. It is readily absorbed and distributed to the brain where it can cause sedation, slurred speech, and coma. Chronic alcohol abuse can lead to diseases of the liver like cirrhosis as well as neurological and fetal issues. Therapeutic uses include as a topical antiseptic and solvent, and disulfiram is used to discourage drinking by causing unpleasant side effects when combined with alcohol.
