Divergent boundaries create two different geological features depending on whether the separating plates are oceanic or continental. The separation of oceanic plates forms a mid-ocean ridge under the ocean, while the separation of continental plates forms a rift valley on land. Divergent boundaries are where new crust is formed as tectonic plates move away from each other.
