Subduction zones occur at convergent plate boundaries where one tectonic plate slides under another plate. There are two types of lithosphere - oceanic and continental - and subduction can happen between oceanic-oceanic plates, oceanic-continental plates, or continental-continental plates. When two plates converge, one plate will subduct below the other at a boundary called a subduction zone.
