The UTA Libraries offer digital humanities services including consultations and workshops through their Digital Humanities Librarian for both undergraduates and graduate students in collaboration with various programs. The libraries are expanding their digital collections through projects digitizing special collections materials on topics related to the borderlands such as the U.S.-Mexico War and Tejano Voices.

Specifically, technical architecture requires high-speed networks and servers to support different digital formats. Building collections involves deciding what existing materials to digitize and acquire. Digitization is the process of converting analog materials into electronic form. Metadata is needed to describe and provide access to digital resources but requires persistent naming schemes. Copyright and rights management are challenging due to the ease of copying digital materials. Finally, long-term preservation of both storage media and access to content is critical given the rapid obsolescence of digital formats.
User Focused Digital Library: A Practical Guide

It first explores different defintions of the phrase "Digital Library".
It then looks at 11 real life examples of digital library websites (slides 44-112), including Europeana, Google Books, Flickr the Commons, Delpher, Wikisource, The Memory of the Netherlands and Project Gutenberg. Each of these DLs is assessed against five different criteria (concepts, properties)

Next Steps for IMLS's National Digital Platform
This keynote, at the Upper Midwest Digital Collections Conference, provides and update on the National Digital Platform and 20 projects supported to enhance it. The national digital platform is a way of thinking about and approaching the digital capability and capacity of libraries across the US. In this sense, it is the combination of software applications, social and technical infrastructure, and staff expertise that provide library content and services to all users in the US. As libraries increasingly use digital infrastructure to provide access to digital content and resources, there are more and more opportunities for collaboration around the tools and services that they use to meet their users’ needs. It is possible for each library in the country to leverage and benefit from the work of other libraries in shared digital services, systems, and infrastructure.
We need to bridge gaps between disparate pieces of the existing digital infrastructure, for increased efficiencies, cost savings, access, and services. To this end, IMLS is focusing on the national digital platform as an area of priority in the National Leadership Grants to Libraries program and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program. We are eager to explore how this way of thinking and approaching infrastructure development can help states make the best use of the funds they receive through the Grants to States program. We’re also eager to work with other foundations and funders to maximize the impact of our federal investment

The art of work in the age of ??? reproduction
The British Library holds over 180-200 million items in its collection, including manuscripts, maps, newspapers, and other materials. Only about 1-2% of the collection has been digitized so far due to the challenges of scale, including the resources needed for imaging, cataloging, and dealing with copyright issues for such a vast collection. The library is addressing these challenges through various digitization efforts and tools that make collections available online, as well as training programs to empower staff in digital scholarship methods and innovations. The goal is for the library to support new ways of exploring and accessing collections through open access digital resources and collaborations.

When working on digital projects, it is necessary to utilize experience in various departments within and outside of the library. A planning document called a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) serves as an agreement between all stakeholders, which will likely include multiple library departments. In order to set expectations, an MOU can assist in the following ways: (1) Evaluating current and potential infrastructure; (2) Determining whether funding is needed or available, (3) Establishing clearly demarcated responsibilities and outcomes for each individual participant, (4) Accounting for and settling potential disagreements, and (5) Serving as a project management plan.

Introduction to Omeka
Omeka is a free, open-source web-publishing platform that allows users to display collections of digital items online. It was created by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media to help historical organizations build searchable digital collections and exhibits. The document introduces Omeka.net, the hosted version of Omeka that provides 500MB of free storage. It notes that users should pay attention to image sizes to avoid large file sizes that exceed the storage limit.
