The digestive system breaks down food into microscopic particles that cells can absorb to provide energy for the body. It includes the stomach, which stores and breaks down food, as well as the small intestine, which absorbs particles and adds enzymes. Waste products are stored in the rectum before excretion from the anus. The liver and gallbladder produce and store bile to break down fats, while the pancreas produces enzymes to break down food. The large intestine removes water from waste before it is expelled.
