The digestive system breaks down food, removes waste, and takes time to function. It begins in the mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva before being swallowed. The stomach stores and breaks down food into smaller particles for further digestion in the small intestine, pancreas, and liver which produce enzymes to break down nutrients. The large intestine absorbs water and stores waste before it is removed from the body by the gallbladder and digestive liquids.
