The digestive system begins in the mouth, which chews and swallows food, and includes salivary glands that moisten food to aid in breakdown. Food then passes through the esophagus into the stomach, where it is further broken down before entering the small intestines for absorption of nutrients. The liver and large intestines also play roles in digestion before waste is eliminated through the rectum.
