The colon contains thickened bands of muscle called teniae coli that give rise to sac-like pouches called haustra. Blood supply comes from branches of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. Lymphatic drainage is through numerous colic lymph nodes. Diseases that can affect the colon include cancer, diverticulitis, volvulus, and appendicitis.

VEINS • Veins have large lumen • Veins are bluish in color • They collapse when there is no blood in it • Veins are usually flattened and thin walled • Veins show sluggish movement of blood • If venous wall is injured, blood comes out, collects in a pool in a small area around vein.
