Martin Šuňal's presentation from Open Networking Summit 2017.
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Service Function Chaining (SFC) have been hot topics for some time, but many users are still finding it difficult to adopt these concepts in the real world. Since network functions are getting virtualized/containerized and service chaining is a requirement in many NFV use cases, there is a need for container service chaining. This presentation discusses problems with existing approaches, potential solutions and benefits of container service chaining.

Tech Talk by John Casey (CTO) CPLANE_NETWORKS : High Performance OpenStack Ne...nvirters
OpenStack is HOT! No doubt about it. A recent survey by The New Stack and The Linux Foundation shows OpenStack as the most popular open source project ahead of other hot projects like Docker and KVM. OpenStack is now taking its rightful place as the open source cloud solution for enterprises and service providers.
To date OpenStack networking has not yet achieved the performance, scalability and reliability that many large enterprises demand. CPLANE NETWORKS solves that problem by delivering secure multi-tenant virtual networking that overcomes the limitations of the standard Neutron networking service. By making all networking services local to the compute node and achieving near line-rate throughput, CPLANE NETWORKS Dynamic Virtual Networks (DVN) delivers mega-scale networking for the most demanding application environments.
In this session John Casey will cover the basics of DVN and explain how CPLANE NETWORKS achieves "at scale" network performance within and across data centers.
About John Casey
John Casey has over 20 years of deep technology leadership. His proven success with a variety of technical leadership roles in Telecom, Enterprise and Government and in software design and development provide the foundation for the system architecture and engineering team.
Previously John led worldwide deployment teams for both IBM’s Software Group and Narus, Inc. His work in large scale, high performance system design at Transarc Labs and Walker Interactive Systems brings leadership to the CPLANE NETWORKS product suite.

OpenStack and OVS: From Love-Hate to Match Made in HeavenOPNFV
Many OPNFV developers building Openstack clouds at scale have a “love-hate” relationship with OVS. They love the flexibility and elasticity offered by a distributed virtual switch operating within each server, but hate the reality of first-gen OVS implementations well-known to be a bottleneck for cloud network performance and scalability. As performance-sensitive VNFs keep pushing for higher data forwarding performance across the NFV network infrastructure, it becomes critical to improve OVS performance without compromising flexibility, network programmability, and cost.
In this session, Mellanox will present a novel way to offload the entire OVS dataplane onto the embedded switch in the server NIC. This approach can not only boost server I/O performance to near line-rate, be it 10G, 40G, or 100G, but also doing so at a fraction of the CPU load needed by existing OVS implementation.
OPNFV VIM integrates control and management components from upstream projects such as openstack, ONOS, ODL, etc. While huge success has been achieved in OPNFV for integration, automated build and deployment, the performance of VIM for controlling and managing virtual network has received little attention. This presentation is to address the VIM performance related to the network part of the infrastructure. Based on a Telco use case, we define performance metrics for SDN controller, northbound communication channels, and network provisioning. ONOSFW and OpenStack are two components for VIM. Test data is collected and analyzed for performance evaluation and suggestions for future improvements. China Unicom, ON.LAB and Huawei jointly define the use case and methodology, do analysis, and produce results.
Segment routing is a technology that is gaining popularity as a way to simplify MPLS networks. It has the benefits of interfacing with software-defined networks and allows for source-based routing. It does this without keeping state in the core of the network and needless to use LDP and RSVP-TE.

While troubleshooting or planning, did you ever wish to get full insight into which paths *all* your packets take in your network, understand whether your SLA is really in place, or were you ever asked to prove that your traffic really follows the path you specified by service chaining or traffic engineering? We approach this problem by adding meta-data to *all* packets. In-band OAM adds forwarding path information and other information/stats to every data packet - as opposed to relying on probe packets, which is the traditional method that tools like ping or traceroute use. This session will introduce In-band OAM, explain the technology and outline the reference implementation in FD.io/VPP and OpenDaylight using a example demos.

Description:
Networks are moving toward simplification, increased operational efficiency, and programmability using technologies such as software-defined networking. Cisco continues to demonstrate innovation by introducing the concept of segment routing in the data center, making the network more intelligent and adaptive to the applications running on top of it. Segment routing delivers application-optimized network transport. Encoding the path information directly at the source (that is, either at the virtual switch or at the top of rack) and using per-app policies, segment routing puts control in the hands of the network operators by empowering them to create secure, adaptive, and optimal paths based on the requirements of the application itself.
Please join us in the session to learn how Cisco is helping organizations increase network efficiency by allocating resources on demand and optimizing the network to better support business-critical applications, all while preserving security.
Agenda
Topics to discuss include:
- Introducing segment routing
- Why the need for application-optimized transport
- Features and benefits of segment routing
- Differences between segment routing and MPLS transport
- Relevance of segment routing in the data center
- Use cases and applicability of segment routing
- Summary and conclusion

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

10. Evolving Service Deployment
• Service functions are used in almost all networks
• Deployment techniques haven’t changed in over a decade!
• Require network configuration changes: VLANs, PBR
• Static: no dynamic, horizontal or vertical scaling, and requires network changes
• Operationally disjoint: no “whole stack” view or orchestration
• Major impediment to application deployment
• How long does it take to deploy a new application or service?
• How much of that is due to network services?
• Service Function Chaining changes all that!
• Embraces the transitions taking places all over the network
• Virtualization
• Programmatic interfaces
• Overlays
• Abstraction
11. SFC Architectural Principles
1. Topology independent
2. Transport independent
3. Simplifies provisioning and orchestration
4. Provide clear visibility and OAM to operators
5. Unburden the service functions
6. Centralized and distributed control plane support
7. Metadata support
12. Service Classifier
Determines which traffic requires service and forms the logical start of a
service path
Service Path
A service path is the actual forwarding path used to realize a service chain
Think of service chain as the “intent”; service path the actual instantiation of
the chain in the network
Service Function Forwarder (SFF)
Responsible for delivering traffic received from the network to one or more
connected service functions according to information carried in the network
service header as well as handling traffic coming back from the SF
Service Function Proxy
Component used to process network service headers on-behalf of an
attached SF

SFC Provider manages all configuration information
provided by orchestration system or admin.
SFC Provider writes constructed Service Function

18. One stop shop for everything SFC
Provides graphical view and configuration of
Rendered Service Paths, Service Chains, Service

Extremely easy to use
Makes configuration and repetitive tasks easy: uses
templates, allows copy & replicating configuration,
bulk edits, amongst others
UI has built-in diagnostics to tell if SFC components
are running, state, pull logs from ODL, amongst
others.
SFC-UI
Provider is equiv of main()
Datastore is idependent
Datastore send notifications
Listeners register to receive notifications (based on YANG tree) from datastore ALWAYS true
Notifications are internal: same YANG model but encoding: json or java object
Point to multi point:
Provider = point
Renders/listeners are multipoints
Providers gets something from UI or REST, pushed to datastore
The listener get notification, and act on them, independently
“A path was created, an SFF was created”
If SFF has OVS augmentation data in YANG (with data) the listener looks for it
Datastore: has it’s tree in the datastore
OVS listener: communicates write ovs listener writes to ovs db datastore
Ovsdbplugin, gets notification, then acts
OF uses API/RPC
REST listener
NC listener uses NC plugin, same as OVSDB BUT does not write to datastore, when it puts, SFC NC listener, sends NC command protocol plug and send to device
EACH listener acts in it’s own environment, optimizes as it should
Provider is the main entry point for ALL “external” access
REST, UI via REST and GBP RPC all use SAME YANG models
Different encoding (http vs java objects)
