STANDARD ACHIEVEMENT TEST
CRITICAL READING TESTS
The new SAT, first administered in 2005,
has a Critical Reading section that presents
both short and long reading passages, each of
them followed by multiple-choice questions.
The strategies below can help you answer
such questions successfully.
STRATEGIES
1. Scan the passage and the test items
first.
This will enable you to look for specific
information as you read.
STRATEGIES
2. Read at an appropriate rate.
Read through the passage once to get the
overall idea. Then read it again slowly to make
sure you understand it.
STRATEGIES
3. Determine the main idea as you read.
The main idea may or may not be directly stated in the passage, but identifying it is
critical to understanding what you read.

4. Identify supporting details.
Details that support main points are often
queried in test items.
STRATEGIES
5. Be prepared to make inferences and
draw conclusions.
These may involve making predictions or
generalizations based what you have read, or
they may be logical conclusions drawn from
the information provided.
STRATEGIES
6. Be prepared to make judgements.
Critical reading involves making evaluative
judgments about ideas, facts and opinions, or
an author’s attitude, style, or tone.
STRATEGIES
7. Refer to the passage to find information.
You do not need to memorize information from
the passage, and may go back to it if
necessary.
