The NecklaceGuy de Maupassant
Maupassant grew up with wealthy parents in North-West France. He spent
almost every Sunday with the great French novelist, Gustave Flaubert, who
inspired him to begin writing. In his teenage years, he served in the Franco-
Prussian War. He got promoted to become a government clerk and he spent most
of his free time writing. Between 1880 and 1890, Maupassant had successfully
written 3oo short stories, 6 novels, 3 travel books, and his only volume of verse.
A lot of his stories were about “inexplicable, illogical, and contradictory
catastrophes”. Also, many of his stories were humorous and warm-hearted. Guy
de Maupassant is one of the most indispensable authors of French Literature,
Thanks to his many great short stories like this one, “The Necklace”.

Lets Have a Game!
To check your knowledge about the Story.
The Game is called “Who said Who?”
Direction: Guess who said the following Lines.
I will call the first person to guess the person who
said the line and after you answer, call a person to answer
the next line. Do not repeat to call a person again to answer.
1. “ Why, my dear, I thought you would be glad. You never go
out, and this is such a fine opportunity. I had a great
trouble to get it…”
Monsieur Loisel
“ Only I have no gown and therefore, I can’t go
to this ball. Give your card to some colleagues
whose wife is better equipped than I am …”
-Madame Loisel
“Yes, look further, I don’t know
what you like…”
Madame Forester
“It annoys me not to have a single
piece of jewelry, not a single
ornament, nothing to put on. I shall
look poverty stricken…”
Madame Loisel
“Wait a bit. You will catch a cold
outside. I will call a cab…”
Monsieur Loisel
“I have lost Madame
Forestier’s necklace…”
- Madame Loisel
“It was not I, madame, who sold
that necklace, I must simply have
furnished the case.”
- Jeweler
“You should have returned it sooner,
I might have needed it”
- Madame Forestier
“My poor Mathilde, Why my
necklace was imitation. It was worth
at most only 500 Franc”
Madame Forestier
“I shall go back on foot, over the
whole route, to see whether I can
find it …”
- Monsieur Loisel

Plot Sequence of Events
 Mme. Mathilde Loisel is in her apartment of dreaming of a
better life. She is unhappy and dissatisfied with her social
status and surroundings.
 One day, her husband, Monsieur Loisel announced that
they will attending a ball.
 Mme Loisel felt unhappy because she would look poor. She
thought that she has nothing to wear. No gown nor fine
jewelries.
 She borrowed a diamond necklace to madame Forestier.
 She enjoyed the night, dancing and meeting people, while
her husband was alone sleeping in an anteroom.
 At home, she felt her neck and realized she lost
the borrowed necklace.
 Monsieur Loisel went back to the streets to look
for the necklace but he was unfortunate.
 The couple decided to buy the 36,000 francs
diamond necklace.
 They work so hard and suffered much just to pay
for their debts to buy the necklace.
 One day, Mme. Loisel saw Mme. Forestier. She
told her about the lost necklace. Mme. Forestier
laughed and told her that it was just a fancy
jewelry which cost 500 franc.
Climax:
When Mme. Loisel lost the diamond necklace
Resolution
The couple work hard and sacrificed for 10 years
just to pay for their debts. They lived in much
poverty only to find out that the lost necklace
was just a fake
Symbol
Necklace
Given that Mathilde cannot go to the party without
jewels, the necklace represents both her greed and
artificial nature. First, Mathildes inability to be
satisfied with only a dress, her need for the necklace
proves her greed. Compounding this, Mathilde is not
happy at first with the choice of jewelry Madame
Forestier offers her. She actually asks if there are any
other necklaces.
Irony in the Story
Dramatic Irony
Mme. L. borrows a necklace to fit in with the rich
people she envies, but the loss of the necklace
results in her being poorer than she was.
Mme. And M. Loisel work hard for 10 years for a
fake diamond necklace
Theme
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
The story is about HONESTY and telling the
TRUTH. The author is trying to stress the
IMPORTANCE OF TELLING THE TRUTH.
LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS
It is also about the CONTENTMENT OF WHAT YOU
HAVE. People should learn to be HAPPY and
THANKFUL of what they have. If they want more
they should WORK HARDER TO ACHIEVE IT.
THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FOR FREE
THE BEST AND MOST WONDERFUL
THINGS IN THIS WORLD ARE FREE
Question: What would this BEST thing
that are free?
Hint: We can’t buy it
