Film Response to Smoke Signals The film Smoke Signals is about two young Native American men,
Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds the Fire, who venture off their reservation in Idaho to go to Phoenix,
Arizona to pick up the ashes of Victor s dead father. The film opens with a house fire on the Fourth of
July, 1976. Infant Thomas is saved from the fire by Victor s father, Arnold, but is also left parentless
when his parents aren t so lucky. Twelve years later, Victor s drunk and abusive father abandons his
family and leaves the reservation. Twenty years later, Victor learns of his father s death and decides
that he should go retrieve his father s ashes in Phoenix. Knowing that Victor ... Show more content on

The comment We ve been traveling a long time... can also represent a metaphor comparing the long
and difficult journey of their ancestors to their own. One of the metaphors in the film can be found in
the near end when Victor s father tells a story of himself and Victor playing basketball against catholic
priests. The game and its players represent a battle of Indians versus Christians and therefore a
metaphor for the most of the conflict between the United States and Native Americans. The U.S.
government attempted many time in many different ways to assimilate Indians. In government ran
schools, Indian children were not allowed to practice their traditional beliefs and were encouraged and
sometimes forced to practice Christian

Police Brutality And The Law Enforcement
Police Brutality The duties of law enforcement involve looking after the American people. As the Los
Angeles Police Department puts it, it is the police s duty to Protect and Serve the community. As
Americans, we should expect to be able to rely on local police to solve our problems and bring peace
and stability to society. Yet, as current events have shown, these promises are not always fulfilled.
Since the late 1960s, America has begun to grow from a racially segregated nation, into one of unity
and equality. Today there is no doubt that immense progress has been made, however events involving
our law enforcement and minorities has seemed to halt such progress. Police brutality continues to be
a major issue nationwide with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recently, the public has begun to once again rise up against such heinous crimes that seem to hail
from an era before civil rights.
Police brutality notoriously rose during the 1990s. The most guilty of this was the Los Angeles Police
Department. After the introduction of crack cocaine plagued the streets of American cities, Los
Angeles took the initiative of upgrading its CRASH Unit (Community Resources Against Street
Hoodlums). By April 1988, nearly 1,567 minorities were arrested on just one weekend, yet about 10%
of these arrests actually led to felony convictions. By 1998, the CRASH unit was embroiled once
again in a scandal known as the Rampart Scandal. More than seventy officers assigned to the Rampart
Division were accused of strong police misconduct. These officers were accused of targeting
minorities and planting evidence on these victims, framing them to higher their positions in the LAPD.
(Source #3) In the middle of all this, one case would implant the image of police brutality to all
Americans for years to come. On March 4, 1991, an African American man named Rodney King had
been drinking earlier in the night and was on his way home, speeding on the highway which brought
attention to an officer stationed there and proceed to pursue King. After attempting to outrun police,
King was eventually cornered by police. What would be expected to be a quick arrest after being
pulled over quickly turned brutal. As King exited

Elements Of Field Programmable Gate Arrays
CHAPTER 1 1 INTRODUCTION For the past decades, scientific computation has been a popular
research tool among scientists and engineers from numerous areas, including climate modelling,
computational chemistry, and bioinformatics .With the maturing of application algorithms, developing
high performance computing platforms that satisfy the increasing computational demands, search
spaces, and data volume have become a huge challenge. As predicted by Moore s law .faster and faster
computers are built to provide more processing power every year. Apparently, speeding up the
computation serially alone is no longer enough. In 1967 Amdahl presented a model to estimate the
theoretical maximum improvement when multiple processing units were ... Show more content on

Various representation systems were introduced to represent signed integer numbers, including signed
magnitude, biased, and complement systems .Both the signed and unsigned integer representations can
be extended to encode fractional data by employing an implicit or explicit radix point that denotes the
scaling factor. These integer based real number representations are generally called fixed point
systems, where the term fixed point implies that the scaling factor is constant during the computation
without externally reconfigured. As a result, the precision (least represent able value of the unit in the
last place, for a fixed point number system cannot be improved without sacrificing its represent able
value range. Floating point representation on the other hand provides not only the ability for wide
dynamic range support, but also high precision for small values. A typical floating point number is
represented in four components, and its value can be calculated with the equation. x = ± s × be, where
s is the significant and e is the biased exponent (with implicit bias). The standard precision of

Obasan By Joy Kogawa Analysis
Obasan by Joy Kogawa presents a poignant and unforgettable story that reveals Naomi s childhood to
be one that consist of mistreatment as well as the hardships she faced. Readers witnessed the
distraught and painful events Naomi faces. Naomi childhood has taught her to make peace with the
past and reopen the floodgates one by one (238) and to let go because what s done is done. Naomi has
been able to defeat suffering and bring closure to her life. At four years old Naomi s innocence was
robbed. Kogwa writes, his hands are large and demanding, He caresses my head as if I were a small

Naomi feels so much anger towards the government because of its cruelty on its people. She defines
hardship to be something so pervasive, so inescapable, so thorough (232). Moreover; in a
metaphorical sense, hardship is a noose around my chest and I cannot move anymore. All the oil in my
joints has drained out and I have been invaded by dust and grit from the fields and mud is in my bone
marrow (232). Naomi vents her fury for what she has gone through but, Aunt Emily insist that she
must let go by releasing the floodgates one by one because their is no doubt that it will all happen
again, over and over with different faces and names (238). Naomi s experiences in Slocan has allowed
to make peace with her past for a better future. In sum, Naomi s childhood of mistreatment and
hardship leads peace at last. She has been able to seek closure with everyone in her life, it may not be

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Technology In The World
While thinking about technology created by mankind, look at carbon dioxide gases produced by
burning fossil fuels, resulting in the greenhouse effect. The power of the atom for nuclear power plants
or the power of the atomic bomb. The use of Freon used in cooling systems for refrigeration to
preserve food has caused holes in the ozone. Technology used today has provided people the
advantage of having more leisurely time. Having gained time, we can choose to use it in productive or
self destructive ways.
In today s world, while interacting with technology through social media, apps, e mail, web chat
rooms, texting on cell phones, etc. these are used for communicating with people far away. It is the
main way people now like to communicate, this affects our social and emotional lives in many ways.
While this lacks the social interaction with people face to face. It is easier to tell someone no when
you don t have to look at them directly. It is even easier to say no by texting, then you don t have to
use your voice to communicate with them. The electronic media of broadcasters of both television and
radio have been the main sources of news for years. Now information is shared quickly and more
easily through the web. In today s technological world there are positive and negative effects.
Depending on how responsible we use the tools to communicate because we can choose to use them in
a productive or self destructive way.

Inspector Dupin s The Murders In The Rue Morgue
Mystery novels have been an intriguing subject to a lot of readers. A famous mystery novel writer,
Edgar Allan Poe, had explained meaningful life lessons within his words, in his story, The Murders in
the Rue Morgue. His story contains a strenuous case to investigate and the character, Inspector Dupin,
is the only key to figuring it out. The outcome of the turning point had an immense influence to
several things in the story. The discovery of the broken nail is significant because of its effects on how
the killer got in and out, how carefully Dupin analyzed his clues, and proving even the smallest clues
have a big impact. The damaged nail has been a significant piece of evidence to finding out who the
killer is and how they could ve escaped. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dupin takes his detective work earnestly and it gives him a deep pride as he unravels each clue,
connecting pieces of the puzzle. Dupin says, Upon this point I had been satisfied in my walk with you
around the building... My ultimate object is only the truth. My immediate purpose is to lead you to
place in juxta position (Poe 3 4). Dupin inspects every inch of the room and building until he is
satisfied; showing that he knows it takes full carefulness and alertness to find a clue. As Dupin
continues, he explains his logical inferences with great honesty, considering that lying is not a usage
of reason (Poe 4) for him. He also states, You will say that I was puzzled; but, if you think so, you
must have misunderstood the nature of the inductions. To use a sporting phrase, I had not been once at
fault . (Poe 3). Dupin knows what he is doing, by telling us he is certain the window was the killer s
way out. This shows his determination on what he believes and thinks. His actions or how he works
has been a substantial influence on finding out who the killer is and arose an imperative life

Causes And Symptoms Of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
I. Background
CW, an 18 year old Caucasian male, presented at a rural hospital located in northwest New Mexico.
CW complained of flu like symptoms including a headache, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and
myalgia for the previous two to four days (Staff, 2014). He stated within the past 24 to 48 hours he
had developed a productive cough, a tightening in his chest, and shortness of breath. When questioned
what, his activities were prior to the onset of symptoms he stated he was a student and played tight
end for the football team. When probed further he stated one to two weeks prior he cleaned some
sheds on his parent s farm. While waiting on lab results from the bloodwork, CW went into respiratory
distress. He was intubated and sent to the ICU for supportive care.
II. Physical and Laboratory Findings
On examination, the physician listened to CW s lungs, noting there was diminished lung sounds with
crackling. Chest X ray showed acute pneumonia in both lungs. The physician also noted swelling in
CW s chest and neck area (Cunha, 2015). Blood was drawn with a heparinized vacutainer tube and a
serum separator vacutainer for serology, and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain raction testing.
While CW was in intubation there were lung tissue samples obtained for the immunohistochemistry.
The serum lab results showed, on a smear, there was evidence of immature leukocytes (Cunha, 2015),
as well as an increase in virus specific IgM. An acute and

The Kindertransport Missions
The Kindertransport missions were an attempt at rescuing German children from the horrors of the
Holocaust ( Kindertransport, 1938 1940 ). The nazis burned Jewish synagogues, orphanages, and other
Jewish buildings (Ward). Organizations wanted to do everything in their power to protect the children
from these terrible things. While these worked for many children, there were still several that had to
suffer. Many of the Jews were separated from their families forcefully by Hitler and the Nazis. Jews
were also sent to concentration camps where they were often tortured and killed by genocide. During
the Holocaust, orphanages were burned down, children and parents were separated from each other,
and rescue missions took place. The Kindertransport ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children continued to be effected, there were just less frequent reports of children being physically
harmed. Some of the teenage boys who were transported fought against their home country, Germany,
in World War II (Ward). Due to this, some of the boys were often killed during combat. The original
plan was to prevent the transports from being injured. This was effective for the majority of the time
although, some were still injured. There was no way to keep every child 100% safe. Homes were
promised to the transports by The Movement for the Care of Children from Germany. There were
fears that many of the transports would not have homes due to the amount of children being
transported at once. These fears slowly faded as different groups and organizations promised to find
and provide a place to stay for every transported child. To ensure the safety of the children while on
the train, soldiers searched every transports belongings before they were allowed to enter the train
(Ward). Bags were checked for any weapons or suspicious items that could be used to harm another
individual. The soldiers wanted to fulfill their job and do their best by making sure that every child
that entered the transports made it safely off. While the children were still psychologically effected,
they were mostly protected from the violence of the

Cleopatra s Reign As The Last Queen Of Egypt
Cleopatra VII was one of, if not the most powerful and famous women in ancient history. She was a
queen, a goddess, a skilled diplomat and a negotiator, who played a serious role in reforming Egypt
and how women were viewed in the ancient world. She was an incredibly clever woman from a young
age, becoming queen at the youthful age at eighteen. Cleopatra also made huge contributions to
politics in Egypt, through her skills in language and consequently of her hundreds of followers and
supporters. She was able to even entice some of the most important people in history, such as Mark
Antony and Julius Caesar, and had relationships with other Roman rulers such as Emperor Augustus.
Her name was very well known in the ancient world as a beautiful and skilled lady, and still is to this
day. For these reasons, Cleopatra s reign as the last queen of Egypt was unlike any other ruler of the
ancient world, and her contributions and legacy have left a lasting effect on the world, as we know it.
Cleopatra VII was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, ruling Egypt from 51 BC 30 BC. She was
born in the Egyptian capital city of Alexandria in about 70 BCE, into the royal family that had ruled
Egypt for nearly 300 years. She was the daughter of King Ptolemy XII of Egypt. Cleopatra was a
woman remembered for her beauty and her relationships and love affairs with two very important
warlords, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. When her father Ptolemy XII died in 51 BCE, Cleopatra

Infant Sleep Duration And Maternal Sensitivities
Infant Sleep Duration and Maternal Sensitivities Role in a Child s Psychological and Emotional
Development and Adjustment
Discussion
Poor infant sleep duration has been linked to possible problematic behavior in toddlers and their social
and emotional adjustment. Recent studies show that frequent night waking s and irregular sleep as an
infant can lead to behavior irregularities or attention and concentration difficulties as suggested by
Professor Avi Sadeh (2015). Maternal sensitivity was observed discovering it s relation between
externalizing and internalizing behavior in children, conducted by Stephanie Bordeleau, Annie Bernier
and Julie Carrier (2012). Sleep is important for a child s day time functioning abilities suggesting
interference of or insufficient sleep in infancy can interrupt a child s developmental process as stated
by Bordeleau, et al (2012).
Media Article Summary Children observed, ages 3 to 4 who experienced irregular sleep, interrupted
sleep or frequent night waking s displayed altered concentration and problematic behavior in some,
conducts Sadeh (2015). Researchers believe there is a long term effect on interrupted sleep. This can
be shown in the toddler s behavior, attention and concentration. The research used was longitudinal
and many methods were used such as an actigraphy and attention span measurement using a
computerized test done 3 4 years after the initial start of the study. Observation was conducted by the
parents and reports were used

A Police Officer
The bill I will be introducing from the 84th session will be HB474. This is a bill that requires officers
to wear body cameras while preforming their job with the public (Reynolds). I will be informing you
on the positive and negative sides of the bill. I will give you my opinion on this bill and why I chose
it. I will also inform you on who introduced it and a partial background. Finally I will inform you if
the bill passed and became a law or not. In recent years, there has been a huge movement with police
brutality. There has also been a movement with Black Lives Matter. These two groups almost always
go together. The media has been a big factor in these movements. Facebook and Twitter are key sites
in showing how innocent minorities get into trouble just by the way they look. Many followers of
these movements believe that it is a type of cultural and racial discrimination. An oath to protect is
what they did. The life of a police officer is probably one of the most dangerous jobs out there. These
people are human, some have families of their own. It is hard sometimes to see their side of the story.
These people are not perfect, but personally they need to be very close to it. Any time a police officer
decides to pull the trigger they need to understand the consequences that will come with it. The media
will tend to eat it up. Make a story and get a huge crowd in the public to hate every single police
officer. It is hard to be a Black person in the United States of

This was my answer Having support, knowing you will go to heaven, God will be there for us. This is
another question you can ask yourself, What makes being a Christian difficult? And this was my
answer Hard to be nice to people 24/7, knowing we might be persecuted, there is sin in the world. So
these are some things you can think about.
It also says in this chapter Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road
that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that
leads to life, and only a few find it. And this is saying that if you follow God you will do anything to

training process designed to help them understand the perspective of the customers they serve. The
training is meant to instill a sense of solidarity and empathy with USAA s customer base before an

Write An Essay On The Sonoran Desert
There is another well known cactus is the Sonoran Desert, the barrel cactus, which is also the most
commonly found cactus in the desert. This kind of cactus can normally grow to a height of 5 to 11
feet. It has a cylinder shaped body, sometimes it is even bigger than a man. From April through June,
the flowers bloom at the top of the plant. Normally, the flower is yellow green or red, but the color
may vary depending on different species. The barrel cactus has numerous ridges going down the sides.
These ridges are covered with long sharp spines, which prevent, on one hand, the water loss in the dry
heat weather, on the other hand, the thirsty animals in the desert as well as mankind. Like the Saguaro
cactus, the barrel cactus is also a source

Is Cooking Really Freedom in Jim Sollisch’s Article,
Is Cooking Really Freedom?
According to Jim Sollisch s article, cooking is an outlet of expression and is not limited to one gender
(Sollisch, Cooking Is Freedom ). Sollisch communicates of how his newfound interest and love of
cooking came out of an act of rebellion to allow the enrollment of boys in Home Economics classes
(Sollisch, Cooking Is Freedom ). He effectively uses an informal tone and an abundance of short,
simple sentences appropriate for his audiences of NY Times and blog post readers. His copious
amounts of personal anecdotes provide credibility in the subject. His use of incomplete sentences and
colorful, easy to understand word choice puts him in the level of the reader establishing a personal
connection.
Sollisch s article is found on the New York Times website in the Private Lives section on the Opinion
Pages. Private Lives is a section for personal essays about real people s lives and problems they may
have encountered. This explains Sollisch s subject choice and why this is mainly an opinion essay. He
starts off with a personal story of how he first came upon the art of cooking (Sollisch, Cooking Is
Freedom ). He tops off his anecdote with similes such as when he describes the power cooking gives
him as similar to the power some kids feel when they get a driver s license (Sollisch, Cooking Is
Freedom ). Sollisch engages the readers with this simile because he makes himself very relatable to
his intended audience.

Statistical Test For Your Data Analysis
Data Analysis and Interpretation In selecting the appropriate statistical test for your data analysis, you
need to identify the question or hypothesis for the study. Are you trying to compare groups, interested
in finding out if there is a relationship between two or more variables, or are you trying to predict.
Some factors to consider as well are the following: (1) Research design, (2) Level of measurement:
nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio, (3) Number of groups, and if they are correlated (dependent) or
independent, (4) Number of variables, and know which is the dependent and independent variable, and
(5) Know when to choose a parametric versus a non parametric test. The flowchart and the Appendix
E section of the book on How to Use SPSS eighth edition of Brian Cronk (2014), was used as a guide
to answer the questions below. Answer this question for the four studies below: Which statistical test
you would use to analyze the data collected for these variables? Study A* Variable 1 is psychiatric
patients gender; and Variable 2 is whether or not the patient has attempted suicide in the past 12
months. Answer Chi square test of independence tests whether or not two variables are independent of
each other (Cronk, 2014). The question here is, is there a relationship between gender and whether or
not the patient has attempted suicide in the past 12 months? Does the relationship differ for males and
females? The independent variable is gender and the dependent variable

Samuel Gompers Conversion To Socialism
In accordance with his hostility to socialism, Gompers was a staunch supporter of capitalism. He
believed that capitalism would improve the rights of union members, and also increase the strength
and power of the labor movement. However, in 1895 the Socialist Party within the AFL took control,
leading to the only year in which Samuel Gompers was not elected president. Despite this, the next
year Gompers was re elected President, and his aversion to socialism became stronger than ever.
Another defining characteristic of Samuel Gompers was that he was unafraid to stand up for his cause.
In 1906, after the courts issued an order not to boycott the Buck Stove and Range Company, Gompers
disobeyed this order and was consequently sentenced to a year ... Show more content on

Samuel Gompers choose not to focus on a reformation of America as a whole, but rather on protecting
the rights of everyday people. By focusing on simple, obtainable goals, Gompers impacted the lives of
millions of people. Gompers had to not only defend his position to those in the government who did
not support the labor movement, but also to his contemporaries who thought him to be too
conservative. He never backed down from his goal of protecting the rights of the working class.
Focusing on his objectives, Samuel Gompers took a firm stance on labor, defending his position to
anyone who disagreed with him. During a chaotic time in history where a strong figure was
desperately needed to change the status quo, Samuel Gompers emerged as a leader at the forefront of
the labor movement.

David by Donatello and Michelangelo
David by Donatello and Michelangelo
When thinking about a triumph over an unimaginable feat, the story of David and Goliath comes to
mind. During the Italian Renaissance, Florence was under constant change and turmoil however David
remained a consistent symbol of endless possibilities for the people. For the Florentines, David
represented the essence of civic virtue courage, fortitude, and faith (Murray, 39). Various artists have
revealed their own depictions of the young shepherd boy but two stand out among the masses.
Donatello and Michelangelo both created masterpieces on the biblical subject although the approaches
of each artist were completely diverse and caused unique reactions.
In 1404, the very powerful Medici ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each David was sculpted in the naturalistic image that their creator envisioned. They also share the
commonality of association with the Medici family, a very powerful group of people that loved the
arts and was said to have commissioned Donatello for the David sculpture. Later on they became too
powerful and the republic forced them out of control, resulting in the creation of another David as a
celebration of their triumph. The earlier David stood in the courtyard of the Palazzo della Signoria,
which also happened to be the very place that Michelangelo s piece was displayed upon completion.
Despite the fact that the David s share time periods, political meanings, and origins, the two sculptures
look completely different and evoke very different emotions. Perhaps the most significant difference is
found in the choices made by the artists to place their sculpture before or after the battle against
Goliath. Donatello s David is portrayed following the victory against the feared adversary. He is full
of glory and stands on the head Goliath with his oversized sword clutched in his small hands.
Michelangelo takes a different perspective and depicts David in the moment before battle with nothing
but his sling in hand. This creates more of a feeling of anticipation and strength of courage. The
determination in Michelangelo s sculpture s face is very apparent where Donatello creates a face that
is calm and victorious.

Introduction
Most folks in the workforce believe they are obligated to do their best at their job simply because that
is what is expected. I am one of those individuals who take pride in my job and I do it well but set a
part from being a way to afford life s expenses, I m always in search of my legacy. The legacy I want
is embodied in my desire to showcase a body of work that demonstrates the three units of intrinsic
motivation that Dan Pink attributes to the most creative workers; Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose
(Pink 2009). On the other hand, there are those folks out there that want to only do as much as they
can get away with doing. Regardless of which type of employee makes up, an organization, leaders
need to understand the science and application of motivation in business processes. Motivation comes
in many forms such as money, benefits, or simple recognition; extrinsic and intrinsic. The right type of
motivation can lead to exponentially higher productivity and profits and that is what we are all looking
for in business.
The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of what science teaches about motivation and give a
contrast between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards as they relate to employee productivity. Additionally,
this paper will include identifying and elaborating on

Golden Age Of Pirates
Republic of Pirates Early in the Golden Age, England encouraged privateering, a kind of legal piracy.
Privateering was a licensed operation where the government granted authority to captains to capture
Spanish ships. The privateers would loot the ships and share whatever profits gained with the crown or
those collecting on behalf of the crown. The Golden Age of Pirates began mostly due to several
treaties which ended the British wars with France and Spain. After many years of fighting and
competition, Spain, England, France, and Holland were all at peace in the Caribbean. At this time
there were thousands of men who were working as privateers whose services, the crown no longer
needed. There was also a lack of decent naval employment for these seamen and therefore they found
themselves without jobs. There was also a boom of shipping trade going on in the mostly Spanish
controlled Caribbean. Mercantilism was one of the many driving forces for privateering and piracy.

and power by exporting goods and importing precious metals from their colonies. This mercantile
economy was in place in many of the powerful European ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I had a misconception about pirates and I thought they were all separate individual groups of rebels. I

Mathematics and Theology Blossoming Together
Mathematics and theology have blossomed together throughout history with many great
mathematicians also being great theologians. However, in the modern scientific era, mathematics has
become by and large secularized in mainstream academia. Although the secularization of mathematics
seems to ignore mathematics metaphysical value, in truth, this secularization allows for mathematics
to act as a universal tool and allows the individual to attach his or her own personal truths without
marginalizing the beliefs of others, especially in education. In addition, attaching one s personal
beliefs to systems of math and logic may lead to contradicting interpretations of the material when
taken into the larger context of society, such as with the concept of infinity, the meaning of truth and
proof, or even the source of mathematics itself. In essence, the secularization of mathematics is a
necessity in our modern dynamic world and in order for mathematics to maintain its effectiveness as a
universal tool our personal beliefs must not be attached to mathematics as a whole.
To begin with, a proper definition of secularization is necessary in order to establish the correct
connotation for the term. As denoted by the world renowned scholar in the study of the sociology of
religion, Jose Casanova, secularization is spoken of in three senses:
a.) Secularization as the decline of religious beliefs and practices in modern societies, often postulated
as a universal, human, developmental

College Students Are Well Known For Being Creative
College students are well known for being creative with ways to make money by creating new
products and services. A Massachusetts college student is facing pressure of getting discipline actions
for listing up his dorm room at Airbnb for renting as a way of making some money. According to the
article Emerson student could face disciplinary action after renting out his dorm room on Airbnb from
Boston.com, Jack Worth, a 19 year old sophomore studying visual and media at Emerson College,
provides his dorm rooms to three renters before he gets caught (Hoover, 2016). The reporter uses both
epideictic and pathos to lure readers attention about the story, but she neither states her opinions over
situation nor focuses on the target audience.
Firstly, Hoover successfully draws attention by using two methods to show two sides of the story. She
opens with pathos by stating the reason that leads Jack Worth to come across the idea of renting out
his room, Living in Boston isn t cheap, Emerson is a fantastic location; there is a high level of interest
of travel in this neighborhood because it s so centrally located, I saw this as a way to make some
money, but also help some people out (para 3). Hoover then uses epideictic by quoting Emerson
College as another side of the situation, The Emerson College Residence Hall policy and the housing
contract that undergraduate residents sign prohibit students from subleasing or renting College
housing units or beds to protect residents

As the Los Angeles Police Department puts it, it is the police s duty to Protect and Serve the community. As Americans, we should expect to be able to rely on local police to solve our problems and bring peace and stability to society. Yet, as current events have shown, these promises are not always fulfilled. Since the late 1960s, America has begun to grow from a racially segregated nation, into one of unity and equality. Recently, the public has begun to once again rise up against such heinous crimes that seem to hail from an era before civil rights. Police brutality notoriously rose during the 1990s. The most guilty of this was the Los Angeles Police Department. After the introduction of crack cocaine plagued the streets of American cities, Los Angeles took the initiative of upgrading its CRASH Unit (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums). By April 1988, nearly 1,567 minorities were arrested on just one weekend, yet about 10% of these arrests actually led to felony convictions. By 1998, the CRASH unit was embroiled once again in a scandal known as the Rampart Scandal. More than seventy officers assigned to the Rampart Division were accused of strong police misconduct. These officers were accused of targeting minorities and planting evidence on these victims, framing them to higher their positions in the LAPD. (Source #3) In the middle of all this, one case would implant the image of police brutality to all Americans for years to come. On March 4, 1991, an African American man named Rodney King had been drinking earlier in the night and was on his way home, speeding on the highway which brought attention to an officer stationed there and proceed to pursue King. After attempting to outrun police, King was eventually cornered by police. What would be expected to be a quick arrest after being pulled over quickly turned brutal. As King exited ... Various representation systems were introduced to represent signed integer numbers, including signed magnitude, biased, and complement systems .Both the signed and unsigned integer representations can be extended to encode fractional data by employing an implicit or explicit radix point that denotes the scaling factor. Sollisch communicates of how his newfound interest and love of cooking came out of an act of rebellion to allow the enrollment of boys in Home Economics classes (Sollisch, Cooking Is Freedom ). He effectively uses an informal tone and an abundance of short, simple sentences appropriate for his audiences of NY Times and blog post readers. His copious amounts of personal anecdotes provide credibility in the subject. His use of incomplete sentences and colorful, easy to understand word choice puts him in the level of the reader establishing a personal connection. Sollisch s article is found on the New York Times website in the Private Lives section on the Opinion Pages. Private Lives is a section for personal essays about real people s lives and problems they may have encountered. This explains Sollisch s subject choice and why this is mainly an opinion essay. During the Italian Renaissance, Florence was under constant change and turmoil however David remained a consistent symbol of endless possibilities for the people. For the Florentines, David represented the essence of civic virtue courage, fortitude, and faith (Murray, 39). Various artists have revealed their own depictions of the young shepherd boy but two stand out among the masses. They also share the commonality of association with the Medici family, a very powerful group of people that loved the arts and was said to have commissioned Donatello for the David sculpture. Later on they became too powerful and the republic forced them out of control, resulting in the creation of another David as a celebration of their triumph. The earlier David stood in the courtyard of the Palazzo della Signoria, which also happened to be the very place that Michelangelo s piece was displayed upon completion. Despite the fact that the David s share time periods, political meanings, and origins, the two sculptures look completely different and evoke very different emotions. Perhaps the most significant difference is found in the choices made by the artists to place their sculpture before or after the battle against Goliath. Donatello s David is portrayed following the victory against the feared adversary. He is full of glory and stands on the head Goliath with his oversized sword clutched in his small hands. Michelangelo takes a different perspective and depicts David in the moment before battle with nothing but his sling in hand. This creates more of a feeling of anticipation and strength of courage. The determination in Michelangelo s sculpture s face is very apparent where Donatello creates a face that is calm and victorious. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Privateering was a licensed operation where the government granted authority to captains to capture Spanish ships. The privateers would loot the ships and share whatever profits gained with the crown or those collecting on behalf of the crown. The Golden Age of Pirates began mostly due to several treaties which ended the British wars with France and Spain. After many years of fighting and competition, Spain, England, France, and Holland were all at peace in the Caribbean. At this time there were thousands of men who were working as privateers whose services, the crown no longer needed. There was also a lack of decent naval employment for these seamen and therefore they found themselves without jobs. However, in the modern scientific era, mathematics has become by and large secularized in mainstream academia. Although the secularization of mathematics seems to ignore mathematics metaphysical value, in truth, this secularization allows for mathematics to act as a universal tool and allows the individual to attach his or her own personal truths without marginalizing the beliefs of others, especially in education. In addition, attaching one s personal beliefs to systems of math and logic may lead to contradicting interpretations of the material when taken into the larger context of society, such as with the concept of infinity, the meaning of truth and proof, or even the source of mathematics itself. In essence, the secularization of mathematics is a necessity in our modern dynamic world and in order for mathematics to maintain its effectiveness as a universal tool our personal beliefs must not be attached to mathematics as a whole. To begin with, a proper definition of secularization is necessary in order to establish the correct connotation for the term. As denoted by the world renowned scholar in the study of the sociology of religion, Jose Casanova, secularization is spoken of in three senses: a.) Secularization as the decline of religious beliefs and practices in modern societies, often postulated as a universal, human, developmental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
