Big Two Hearted River Modernism Essay
Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemingway is a prime example of Modernist writing. The
main character Nick embarks on a quest for self discovery away from his fragmented society.
After the war, Nick returns to a society with a loss of old values, structures, and beliefs.
Therefore, Nick isolates himself in the wilderness upon returning. The reader experiences Nick s
post war mentality, and sees the struggles Nick faces with anxiety about the unknown. It is clear
that Nick s journey represents the modernist search for individuality in the midst of a broken
society. While alone by the water, Nick witnesses a trout. Although it is just a simple trout, the way
in which it moves provides a strong sense of meaning:
A big trout shot upstream in a long angle, only his shadow marking the angle, then lost his shadow
as he came through the surface of the water, caught the sun, and then, as he went back into the
stream under the surface, his shadow seemed to float down the stream with the current, unresisting,
to his post under the bridge where he tightened facing up into the current. ( Big Two Hearted River:
Part I 1202)
The fact that the trout swims upstream is significant in itself. This type of fish travels while
fighting against current. This scene offers symbolism. The trout represents Nick, and the water
symbolizes society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick shows that he possesses this trait when he fishes. Nick did not like to fish with other men
on the river. Unless they were part of your party, they spoiled it ( Big Two Hearted River Part II
1209). His desire for self isolation is a trait for the hero of modernism. Modernist heros are often
alienated due to the brokenness of society. Since Nick wants to fish alone, it shows how he prefers
to stray away from socialization. In addition, being alone grants Nick with a better opportunity to
find himself as an individual in his fragmented

Minutia points represent positions where friction ridges end abruptly or where a ridge branches into
two or many more ridges. A typical good quality fingerprint template contains 20 70 minutiae
points; the actual number depends on the size of the finger sensor surface and how the user places
his or her finger on the sensor. The system stores the minutiae information position and direction
along with the user s demographic information as a template in the enrollment database. During the
identification phase, the user puts the finger on the same sensor, generating a new fingerprint image
or template called query print. Minutiae points are carried out from the query print, and the matcher
module compares the set of query minutia with the stored minutia templates or image in the
enrollment database to find the number of similar minutia points. Because of variations present in
finger placement and pressure applied to the sensor, the minutia points take out from the template
and query fingerprints must be lined up, or submitted before matching. After line up the
fingerprints, the matcher decides the number of pairs of matching minutiae two minutiae points

Literary Devices In The Destructors
The Destructors The Destructors is a short fiction story by Graham Greene. The setting of the
story is in London 9 years after the conclusion of World War II. The short story has to do with a
group of teenage boys who call themselves the Wormsley Common gang, named after the area
they live in. As a result of World War II, the area that the teenagers live in has been destroyed and
many properties lay in ruins with the exception of one house. This is the house of Mr. Thomas
who is known as Old Misery . The Wormsley Common ganghas planned to destroy the house of Old
Misery because they wanted to gain fame and reputation in the area for being a tough gang. Another
reason why they destroyed the house is because it reminded them of higher society, something that
was out of reach for the teenagers. Throughout the short story, the theme that is being conveyed by
Greene is the loss of innocence.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Trevor who is planning the destruction of Mr. Thomas s house says, It s a beautiful
house but later goes on to say, We ll pull it down... We will destroy it . This paradox shows how
Trevor continues on with his plan of destroying the house after he credited it for being beautiful .
This shows how the teenagers have loss their innocence because they intend to destroy the last
remaining house in the area, the house that symbolizes hope. Another example of a paradox
would be how the gang wants to destroy Mr.Thomas s house but simultaneously, they are taking
care of Mr. Thomas. For example, a member of the gang states, Here s a blanket, a voice said and
a long grey sausage was worked through the hole . It shows how the gang wants to destroy the
house not because of their dislike for Mr. Thomas but to destroy and bring down the last beautiful
property in the area demonstrating their loss of innocence. Overall, the use of paradox by Greene
helped in conveying the

The Importance Of Equality In The French Revolution
The French Revolution is a great example of how equality leads to peace and order; if the people
of France were equal during the time of the Revolution, there would not have been so much
conflict and reformation of government. I want to focus on equality because it is a topic that is
dear to my heart for many reasons and I firmly believe that the lack of equal rights is what fueled
the French Revolutionand led to the violence and chaos that occurred during that time. Due to the
Monarchy that the French had at the time, citizens were under a feudal class system that kept
their people from being equal in government. This division between classes is just one of the
things that aided the violence that occurred during the French Revolution simply because people
were not equal. No one was represented in government and no power was distributed amongst the
people; therefore, people felt they were walked on and that their life was not as valuable. The
imbalance of power drove people to violence because the citizens of France felt this was the only
way to make themselves heard. This is just one example of how inequality led to the destruction of
the society in France during the French Revolution. The Feudal Class System and active and
passive citizenship were the main contributors to the lack of equality in France and that is why it
fueled the French Revolution. The first issue that led to the revolution was misrepresentation in
government. This misrepresentation I m referring is

Rumble Fish By Francis Ford Coppola
Rumble Fish
The novel based American drama movie Rumble Fish was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in
1983 the author of the novel S.E. Hinton also co wrote the screen play. The cinematographer is
Stephen Burum, the music is by Stewart Copeland, and the editor is Barry Malkin and the.
Zoetrope Studios produced the movie with a 10 million dollar budget (Clarke).
The plot is primarily about the struggles of the main two characters, Rusty James (Matt Dillon)
and his older brother the Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke). The film shows their journey of self
discovery fueled by the desire to break away from the toxic environment, and end the constant
internal conflict they experience. I think Coppola s unique approach to film was able to deliver
certain themes in the audience in a way the novel alone couldn t. However, the no movie is
completely free from external inspirations and I was able to draw parallels between some of the
movie s major themes to earlier movies and detect traces of the French new wave. Another movie
influence is the Cabinet of Calgary German expressionist and film noir are the main significant
inspirations on the cinematographic style of Rumble Fish. Traces of those genres can be detected in
the film s storyline, mise en scene, cinematography, and sound.
Like in any well produced film, Coppola began the creative process by first studying the novel and
script, then discussing it with the author to determine which key elements must be transferred

Labor Rights In The Crucible
Arthur Miller s play, The Crucible, takes place during the events of the Salem Witch trials in
1692. Miller states in his opening: When a man rises above the individual villainy displayed,
one can only pity them all, just as we shall be pitied someday. It is impossible for man to
organize himself without repression, and the balance has yet to be struck between order and
freedom. Miller s parallels between Salem of 1692 and America of the 1950s apply to present day
American society in racism, sexism, and workers rights. Children rely on their parents to nurture
them as other mammalian offspring do on theirs. However, without the labor rights activists
fighting against excessive working hour requirements, child labor, and minimal pay, most
American children would be facing adult responsibilities such as paying for utility bills and meals,
and would have minimal parent child relationships. Labor rights activists were suppressed by
powerful corporations or companies and corrupt politicians, just as Miller stated, It is impossible
for man to organize himself without repression, and the balance has yet to be struck between order
and freedom. However, the Labor Rights... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

14 15). Besides the freedom of opportunity, the freedom of self determination, the ability to decide
your own fate, is shown to be inherent in the American dream. In The Death of a Salesman Biff
determines his own destiny and thereby achieves the American dream. Rather than becoming a
salesman as his father had hoped, Biff decided to work with his hands the lifestyle which he new
he could enjoy. The poem Ellis Island said that the American dream is not achieved with the self
determination of Americans, but rather, it is achieved by the theft of self determination from
Native Americans. The line, When the earth became owned , tells the reader that Americans
only enjoy success because they took America, the land of success, from its original residents,
the Native Americans (Bruchac l. 22). The poem America and I mentions the freedom gained
once people are liberated from constant hunger. It says, For the first time in America, I d cease to
be a slave of the belly. I d be a creator, a giver, a human being (Yezierskal. 16 17). When freed from
the constant need to find food, men can put their efforts towards achieving their dreams. In addition
to showing the relations of freedom to the American dream, the authors gave ideas on how the
American dream is achieved.
The authors showed two factors in successfully realizing the American dream: its method and its
requirements. The theories on

My 3 Values Essay
Maturity is achieved when a person postpones immediate pleasures for long term values, according
to Joshua Liebman. Values can be just about anything that you can imagine. My 3 values are
respect, loyalty, and honesty. I believe that my three values are what describe me and will help me
when I m older with the decisions that I make.
Respect is one of the most important values to me because they mostly matter in the way that if
someone shows no respect for you or others they more than likely have no respect coming to
themselves or showing it to others. To be respected, learn to respect others to show growth and
maturity. If we don t learn at an earlier age to respect others, such as our peers, adults, or parents,

To have loyalty in life, can go a long way, most of my values, and goals, the mostly contribute to
the fact that, promotion and advancement are the two main consistent goals in my life. Loyalty
contributes to many things in life such as how we work relationships. Loyalty is treated in my
different ways, I had a dog named Rex, he was a small Pitbull mixed with Boxer, him and I, were
playing outside one day, he saw another boy, and ran off with him, I thought he would ve came
back, but he never showed up, I thought I could never have another dog without knowing what
happened to my first dog. I realized that you have to move on from the hard and difficult and just
accept life, even if it is hard, just never giving up or not stopping because of one person or of one
thing that is making you stop and not accomplish your dreams. Loyalty is the second value most
important to me in my 3 values, such as respect, loyalty, and

ZZZZ Best s Story
ZZZZ Best, Inc.
The start of ZZZZ Best:
ZZZZ Best started as a carpet cleaning company. Barry Minkow founded ZZZZ Best in his parents
garage in 1982 when he was only sixteen years old. Due to high competition in the industry, low
enter barriers, and bad internal control, this young entrepreneur started to have cash flow problems,
and a shortage of working capital.
Pressure Leads to Fraud:
Under financial pressure, Minkow started to commit fraud. He forged credit card applications,
staged theft, used bogus financial statements, and used his networking skills to entice wealthy
investors. The most serious fraud he made was inflating the value of the company s insurance
restoration contracts (Knapp, 2006).

2.Opportunity:
The greatest opportunity for Minkow to commit fraud was ZZZZ Best s lack of financial
supervision. Lack of internal control facilitated manipulation of company s assets and transactions.
It gave the CFO the opportunity to falsify the documents and to create fictitious transactions. These
transactions created formidable revenues on the company s books and made it easy to borrow
money from banks. The weak external audit was the other opportunity that allowed Minkow to
commit fraud. The auditor was not familiar with the company and its related parties. In addition,
the auditors placed too much trust in management produced documents and failed to verify key
transactions. These two important reasons gave Minkow an opportunity to commit fraud.
3.Rationalization:
Minkow words, I started with the best of intentions, really I can say that, show that he started
lying because it was an easy way to start and maintain his business. However, he could not stop
after he borrowed a lot of money, and was forced to create bigger lies to cover the small ones.
Minkow s rationalizing behavior made it easy for him to continue lying in order to support the
lifestyle he had become accustomed to and to keep his fraudulent company afloat.
4.Individual s Capability:
Personal charm, conviction, and good organizational skills helped Minkow to get through many
problems during the fraud period. In particular, he was convincing

beneficial? Intro For this investigation I am going to research on bringing Kumon Math and
Reading Center into Vietnam. Kumon Math, as its name, Kumon provides a program in which
students will have the chance to improve their mathematical skills, from the basic one to the
advanced level. It is available for students from all ages to join. Vietnam is a great potential market
to invest in. Since Vietnam has the policies of searching for oversea investment, it has been an
attractive market for many foreign companies. The economy and industry there are in the
developing process, which means that they are lack of investments from outside. Moreover, the
educational system has been focusing a lot on natural science subjects such as math and other ones
which also require certain math skills (physics, chemistry, biology). This is the point that I want to

perfectly dressed, and she was just that. She did not wish for anything good for the world. She
wished that she could be better than everyone. She only thought for herself and she is very
selfish for doing that. Her greed controlled her actions. Perhaps the most obvious section where
the theme is apparent is at the end of the story. Melinda finally gets the repercussions of her
greedy and selfish behavior. Once Melinda realizes she had not studied for her test because she
was too caught up with the snail she takes out her anger at the snail. She then wishes, I wish I
were dead. This is the ultimate payback for being greedy. She was being very greedy throughout
the story and finally she wishes she was dead and of course it came true. Melinda let her greed

Two Other Aspects In The Health Category Are Life Expectancy
Two other aspects in the health category are life expectancy and infant mortality rates. The United

which this mortality rate seems high, but sadly are much higher ones out there. Oman has a life

Saudi Arabiahas a life expectancy rate of 75.50 years and an infant mortality rate of 11.5%, a little

Saudi Arabia has a poverty rate of 12.7% and China, with the lowest, has a poverty rate of 6.1%.
China s poverty rate seems rather low, but when you do the math, they have about 78 million
people who are living below the poverty line, which is a little over eight times the population of the
United Arab Emirates. India and Oman have very similar poverty rates and the two highest in this
comparison. India has a rate of 29.8% and Oman, with the highest at 32%.
There must be some reason for the high poverty rates, let s look at the income inequality in all
seven of these countries, starting with the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has a Gini
coefficient, a statistical measure of the degree of variation or inequality represented in a set of
values, of 36% (Wikipedia, 2017). It also has a GDP per capita of $43,048.85, which seems very
high for a country with a 20% poverty rate. Oman, although I have not found a Gini coefficient,
has a GDP per capita of $21,929.01, which is about half of the UAE s. Saudi Arabia has a Gini
coefficient of 45.9% and it has a GDP like Oman s at $25,961.81. Brazil has a Gini coefficient of
51.1%, which means that the wealth isn t very spread around and many people are poor. Brazil s
GDP per capita is $11,208.08, which is almost four time lower than the UAE s, but maybe that is
because Brazil has a much larger population than the UAE. China has a Gini coefficient of 42.2%

is getting out off of the streets. There are many negative effects that come with growing up in the
inner city. Educational, psychological, and physical issues all certainly take a toll on an individual.
There are connections with bad educationand the inner cities living in poverty. For starters,
disadvantaged neighborhoods are characterized by few well educated adults. This can make things
for the youth growing up in these bad areas much harder. If that is not enough, simply growing up
in a poor neighborhood decreases the chance of finishing high school. It is no secret that the crime

About nineteen percent of young people contemplate or attempt suicide each year. So how do
these statistics matter to you? Think about it like this, according to the center for disease

five deaths every hour. However, you do not hear about suicide like I have so bluntly put it to
you. We see suicide on the news and social media and it is written so positively. When Robin

My plan is to have this goal achieved by January 2011. According to McKay (n.d.), Short term
goals are reachable in one to three years. Short term goals are often a stop along the way to our
long term goals (Planning for the future para. 3). My second professional goal being long term
in is to go from a registered nurse (RN) level II to a level III RN. The hospital that I work for
offers room for advancement through a three level tier program. Starting with my basic RN
license, moving toward level II and then onto level III, each advancement comes through
educational and specified guidelines established by the hospital and set forth in a hospital
policy. Prior to going back to school I was able to attain my level II status. However, the
requirements for a level III require the achievement of a Bachelor s degree and certification in a
specialized field. This means acquiring a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certificate. I
anticipate my graduation from the BSN program to be in May 2012 and then giving me six
months to study for and mastering the CEN test. At that time I will obtain an updated copy of the
policy and requirements and revisit the application process to becoming a level III RN. According

Double Standard Of Masculinity In Gender Role...
Masculinity is a topic that has been debated in our society extensively, through research as well as
in informal settings. Many wonder what it means to be masculine, and if we can really assign a
definition to such a subjective term. After all, shouldn t one s own perception be the determinant of
what constitutes masculinity? This self construction would be the ideal in our society, but

The violence boy s witness on television further legitimates this belief.
Katz explains that advertising imagery equates masculinity with violence. For boys this means
aggression is instrumental in that it enables them to establish their masculinity (Katz 1995). Lee
Bowker researched the influence advertisements have on youth. He asserts that toy advertisements
featuring only boys depict aggressive behavior. Strangely, the aggressive behavior generally results
in positive consequences more often than negative. Bowker also looked at commercials with boys
that contain references to domination.
The results of all the commercials indicate that 68.6% of the commercials positioned toward boys
contain incidents of verbal and physical aggression. There was no cross amp;#64979;gender
display of aggressive behavior. Interestingly, not one single sex commercial featuring girls shows
any act of aggression (Bowker 1998). This research helps explain that it is not just the
reinforcement of close caretakers to the child that legitimate masculinity but society as a whole
(using the television as a symbol of society and it s desires).Another example of how this can be
reinforced even by women who may or may not be trying to promulgate such a belief is with an
experience I had growing up:When I would get a cut or a bruise, I would muster up all the
strength I had to not cry. I feared that if I

Analysis Of Shinnors Gravitation Towards Kit-Cats
I argue that Shinnors gravitation towards the Kit Cats was prompted by an aesthetic feeling
(Huntley 1970, 17) grounded in his early historicality (Heidegger 1950, 47). Heidegger (1950,
29) felt that in order to grasp the truth, we can return to something that is already manifest, in this
case I would argue that this was Donovan s work, specifically work like Balcony Series (with
self portrait) . This truth happening which Shinnors experienced was therefore an example of
Crowther s (2009, 70) theory of corporeal imagination , the idea that our sense of the present
draws upon our actual learned responses to events of the past. If we think of our corporeal
imagination being composed of layers of memory and experience, with some phenomena being

Abstract
Centuries ago, ancient civilizations learned how to take plants that they found flourishing in nearby
areas and grow them conveniently for their own use. The advancement of technology, and the
evolution of farming practices has created a great variance from the simplistic idea of putting a seed
in the ground, adding some water, and hoping it will grow. Currently, a debate amongst the farming
community has caught the attention of people even living hundreds of miles from the nearest ...

By rotating crops, studies have shown that it can increase the yield, lower the cost of crop
production, and decrease the amount of additives needed to make a strong crop. Rotation has also
been known to benefit physical properties of the soil like tilts, and bulk density, and also contribute
to efficient use of plant nutrients found in soil.
The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide
micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic
bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive
in the soil. For centuries farmers have used green manure, but in recent times it has been replaced
by the use of herbicides and fertilizers. This practice has multiple benefits for the soil including soil
tilth, water infiltration, and reduction of sealing. It provides erosion control, adds to the fertility of
5
the soil, suppresses the growth of weeds, and encourages the growth of beneficial insects.
There are two main types of green manure, legumes and non legumes. Legumes benefit the soil by
adding much needed Nitrogen, it does this by fixing atmospheric Nitrogen into a form plants can
use. Non legumes recycle excess Nitrogen into Phosphorus and
Potassium, two other highly need nutrients for the success of crops. The use of a cover crop does
require a little planning

Analysis Of The Charge Of The Light Brigade
The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson The charge of the light brigade by Tennyson was
written about a disastrous military escapade during the Crimean war. The Crimean war was
fought between Russia on one hand and Britain, France and Turkey on the other. The charge of
the light brigade occurred in November 1854 at Balaclava in the Crimea. The Earl of Cardigan
led the charge, and some six hundred cavalrymen took part in it. The brave 600 rode straight
down a valley that was fortified at its end by many cannon served by Russian and Cossack
gunners. The heroes were following confused orders from higher military authority as the rode into
this valley of death. Tennyson was appointed Poet Laureate by Queen Victoria in 1850, a job...

The instructions given seem incredibly stupid, Charge for the guns! He said; Because it is
obvious to the reader that there is no way that a brigade of horseback soldiers will be able to
compete when faced with cannons. These instructions seem completely irrational, with the
results only able to be horrific losses to the Light Brigade. The semi colon at the end of the line
is there to allow the reader a pause to take in this shocking instruction. Verse two begins by
repeating the instruction to go forth into the valley. It is followed by the rhetorical question Was
there a man dismay d? The command is described only as a blunder , as though it isn t that big a
mistake. Tennyson doesn t use a very explicit word in his criticism, very possibly because as
poet laureate it was part of his job to show the establishment in the best possible light, irrelevant
to the situation. Unquestioning loyalty to the empire is expected from the soldiers, it wasn t seen
as their place to question or challenge orders given to them from higher ranks, Theirs not to make
reply, theirs not to reason why A sense of foreboding is created with, Theirs to do and die , But the
emphasis is on their unstoppable courage and their willingness to die for their country. The repeated
patterning of the use of theirs to start three consecutive rows is done to emphasise the position in
which the soldiers have found themselves, and the sacrifice they will have to make.

A Long Way Gone 1
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, by Ishmael Beah, tells of the experiences in his
intense journey through Sierra Leone during the outbreak of war. Beah had to learn to survive the
harsh outcome of the war, resulting in the loss of those whom were close to him, family and
friends, and trust in people. The book has a recurring theme of nature and the natural world. In the
book, the world at night, as well as the moon, serves as both a safeguard and a bringer of
bereavement. As a boy, Ishmael has heard stories and proverbs about the moon. An old man in his
village would say, We must strive to be like the moon. (Pg. 16) Ishmael s grandmother explained

the stars with it, making the sky weep. Its tears saved us from the red bullets. (Pg. 98) Ishmael
explains that, he can see the redness that the guns give off when they are fired. Another example
of when the night is his savior, is when he is living in Freetown after the rebels overthrow the

when it is discovered by the rebels, Ishmael goes into hiding hoping that night would come. He
compares the wait for nightfall to Judgment Day because the night sky is the only thing that could

While it is not a strange thing to see The CW shows crossing over like The Flash with Arrow. Or
The Flash with Supergirl, even. However, what does Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who
stars in the upcoming Supernatural season 12, have to do with The Flash? Jared Padalecki and
Jensen Ackles, who plays Sam and Dean Winchester, may have lost their way. And not in a
paranormal sense. They were recently spotted hanging around the set of The Flash season 3.
Ackles went online to teas fans about their presence. The question remains, what are Jared
Padalecki and Jensen Ackles doing in The Flash season 3 production set? IB Times has it that they
were not doing anything show related. Ackles posted a video of himself with Padalecki. Padalecki

There is no actual DC connection to both shows. Except for the fact that their production sets are

Cosmological Arguments On The Existence Of A God
For thousands of years man has pondered a question. A question that is very important as the
answer affects everything that mankind knows about morality, the universe, and the meaning of
life itself. This question has been asked by men and women from all walks of life and it would
seem that for every question answered concerning this topic a dozen more arise. Philosophers to
Scientists to Kings have all pondered this question and this question is whether or not God exists.
Now there are various conceptions of God within philosophy, but the most simple and widely
accepted definition would likely be a metaphysically necessary being. That will be the definition of
God for this paper. Numerous arguments have been put forth for and against the existenceof a God,
and some can be grouped together according to their type. Examples of these arguments range from
teleological arguments to axiological arguments to cosmological arguments (to name a few). The
following paper will focus on cosmological arguments, in particular the Argument from
Contingency. Ancient philosophers would look at the stars and would marvel at their beauty and
would point to their structure as an indication of the order within the universe. These ancient
thinkers would take this as a sign of the existence of gods/god. With time came those who put forth
arguments that drew from what was seen in the night sky to argue for the existence of their god
/gods. Notable names like Plato and Aristotle are just a few

The Scottsboro Trials
The Scottsboro trials happened in the 1931 and dragged on for years. These cases were solely

I got a clearer view of what it was like to actually be an African American during 1930 s and go
through the criminal justice system. I found it amazing how far our criminal justice system has
came and also disheartening to see that in some aspects the criminal justice system is still the
same almost 100 years later. African Americans are still convicted at a higher rate then their
white counterparts, African Americans still receive longer sentences for the same crimes their
white counterparts commit. At the same time the criminal justice has changed the standards for
selecting judges and for selecting juries which is very important in criminal cases such as the
Scottsboro Trials. I also observed that very much like back then and today lawyers will take on
high profile cases simply for personal benefit not because they believe in the person or the issue
at hand. I was shocked to realize that I grew up 30 minutes away from where these trials took
place in the city of huntsville. I believe that we as a country are far from having a perfect criminal

Dc Is Better Than Marvel Research Paper
Why is DC better than Marvel? Here are some reasons why DC is better than Marvel. The reason
you should listen is because the DC universe is becoming into the coolest place ever because of
all of the characters and scenes and themes and fighting scenes. DC is better than Marvel. These
will be some of my main points: DC has better characters, DC is more serious than Marvel is at
fighting, DC is darker than Marvel. I will compare each Universe to each other and see why DC
is better than Marvel. As I compare look carefully at the facts and carefully notice that DC is better
than Marvel. The first character I am going to talk about is Superman. Superman is the most
powerful alien out there in the DC world. Superman has the coolest powers on earth. Superman
has a lot of powers such as lasers, x ray vision, flight abilities, super speed, super breath, freeze
breath and he is invincible. Other heros don t really have that many powers like Superman does.
Marvel s Iron Man has a cool suit and the cool powers from the suit but Superman s powers are
real and he was born with his. Iron Man aka Tony built his powers/suit. As Superman has strong
powers, Iron Man is encouraging science and technology education. And for Wonder Woman, she

Essay about Social Security Reform
Social Security Reform
Nearly every American sees the letters FICA at least once a week. While rushing out of the
office or place of employment and scurrying to the bank to cash a well deserved paycheck, the
average American scowls at the roughly 8% the FICA tax inevitably consumes. Yet, ask any
American what they plan to use to enjoy life after they retire and the answer is generally uniform:
my social security checks . This answer has been repeated for over sixty five years. Since
President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal, Americans have been receiving returned taxes for
their retirement through a public policy known as the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance

Finally, the report will deliver an optimal legislative environment for the reconfiguration of what
has been the most stable government program in America history.
The History of Social Security Derived from Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck s Prussian Plan for
German workers, President Franklin D. Roosevelt developed a plan to provide pensions for
elderly Americans in 1935. After nearly six years of depression, the United States was ravaged
with an unemployment rate of 25% and many others had lost everything they owned due to the
collapse of the internal banking market. The future looked grim for most Americans because
even those with jobs had barely any purchasing power due to enormous interest rates and high
inflation. Riding high on his New Deal, President Roosevelt studied how Bismarck s plan had
worked so well in Germany and sought to develop a similar plan for America citizens. On
August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt succeeded in developing a national insurance plan and
signed the Social Security Act into law (Sharp: 389). The Social Security Act of 1935 was set up
to pay monthly benefits to retired workers starting at the age of sixty five. However, before the
Act went into effect in 1939, two new categories of recipients expanded the law. Dependants of the

Doctor priests had a higher status than some surgeons who were working more than skilled
mechanics of the body, working with their hands rather than their brains. Infections were very
common to occur. Surgery was the last option. They tried to not have to perform surgery. It was
something to be replaced because death was the only alternative besides surgery. Most
procedures were simple and easy but that doesn t necessarily mean they can t prevent infections.
The doctors who took orders from God ranked higher than the men who performed the surgeries
with hope and skill but they lacked knowledge to help the patient. One common treatment was
taking blood from the patient. The four humors was mucus, yellow bile, blood, and black bile.
Some treatments can kill the patients before the disease would. One of his findings was that

Theme Of Hercules In The Iliad
The theme of an epic poem or short story is arguably the literary element that has the greatest effect
on conflict in a story.
Theme is what the characters and the audience are supposed to take away after finishing the story.
In Hercules and The Iliad, the overall themes of each story help to almost determine the conflict to
come, and how that conflict will help to shape the character.
Many consider the main theme of The Iliad to be the very first line in the entire epic poem, in
which a muse sings a song about the wrath of Achilles . This opening line of dialogue sets up the
epic in a way that enable a lot of conflict to be set up.
No man alive could keep the dog packs off you, not if they haul in ten, twenty times that ransom
and pile it here before me and promise fortunes more (Beers 64).
In this quote, Achilles is brutally informing Hector that he will not return his body back to his
family once he has died. This reflects back onto the theme of the wrath of Achilles , demonstrates
how one person s wrath can lead to deadly conflicts.
In Hercules, one theme that is commonly found is persevering against all of the struggles that one
may encounter. In this epic poem, Hercules has to complete twelve challenges in order to prove he
is a virtuous man (Hamilton). These twelve challenges easily allows for one conflict after another
to occur throughout the entire story.

How Has The Media Affected The Politics Of The Bangladesh...
How has the media affected the politics surrounding the Bangladesh factory disaster? One of the
most deadliest working disasters in recent histpry, the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh collapsed leaving
an estimated 1,300 dead and 2,500 injured. Before collapsing in April 2013, the eight story building
was used mainly by western commercial businesses such as Walmart and Primark. Workers in
Bangladesh are repeatedly pushed by fast production times, to meet the demands of changing
western fashion, leaving worries about structural damage within the building ignored and unheard.
The popularity of western production in Bangladesh raised attention within the western media. This
alerted both companies, customers and both western and eastern governments in order to find who
was responsible for the disaster, causing movement for industrial change. The rise of attention
towards working conditions in Bangladesh encouraged dramatic change but it is debatable if any
has been dramtically successful and why both companies and governments took action before the
media did. The Rana Plaza building became such significant news during 2014 because of the
popular, western brands that were involved with the incident. The severity of the collapse raised
demand for change in Bangladesh s work conditions and the lifestyle of their workers. When
looking at this change, it was most evident within governments and unions outside of Bangladesh.
Debatably, this strong reaction towards the disaster could have

Group Communication Analysis Paper

In my opinion, group work is a type of cooperative learning that helps people to accomplish a
certain task in a faster and more effective manner. Team working also helps to achieve the tasks
that are impossible to finish by one individual. However, if people in a group have a lot of
conflicts, group work will not be able to achieve as much as we expected. There are many reasons
which lead to dissatisfaction in group work such as individualism as well as conflicts in opinion

Secondly, I want to mention our group climate. In my opinion, our group has a supportive climate.
Each member is willing to help other members in the group to complete their tasks. Our group
favors description compared to evaluation. Instead of criticizing others behaviors and ideas, we
often tell our feelings about problems. All the group members always encourage each other to share
their opinions and feelings with the group. Even though some opinions are too conflicting, the main
purpose is trying to give all the members equal opportunities to talk about their ideas. Thus, the
success of the group is the consequence from the equal contributions of all the members.
Besides, in most of the discussions of our group, we are oriented toward problem solving;
therefore, we look for the consensus of the ideas in order to solve the problems effectively and
quickly. Because our group has many members who have senses of humor, we always maintain
an interesting and comfortable atmosphere to gain assertiveness in the group. Sometimes, Ngoc
and Phong share their experiences of how they solve their families problems. Through perceiving
more deeply about each member s own life, we have gradually gotten closer together; therefore,
we are always honest and open to each other. Also, we do not criticize when a group member
cannot finish his or her task as expected because there are always personal issues out of the class.

Impacts Of Tourism On Tourism
Introduction
Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, but can easily be affected by several issues
ranging from economic and political issues to safety and security concerns. Health issues are
closely related to safety concerns, which can have a major negative impact on tourism. A current
health issue that is affecting the tourism industry in the US, Caribbean, and Latin American
countries is the Zika virus. The Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes species
mosquitos. It can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn fetus, which can result in
microcephaly, along with other birth defects. Zika can also be contracted by having sex with an
infected partner or by a blood transfusion. Currently, there is no treatment or vaccine to prevent
being infected with the virus. According to the CDC, the best prevention method is to do
everything possible to prevent mosquito bites.
Current Impacts of Zika on Tourism The Zika virus has already shown a decrease in tourism in
Florida, and also in Caribbean and Latin American countries. In South Beach, Florida, which is a
Zika zone , there are many business owners who are worried about future economic fallout. The
rise in confirmed cases of Zika has resulted in a higher percentage of concerned travelers. Local
business owners have reported guests calling and cancelling hotel reservations (Luscombe, 2016).
Caribbean and Latin American countries have reported some decrease in percentage of travelers

The Movie The Forest
The movies. A place where everyone comes to see entertainment on the big screen. Going to the
movies has become very common in American culture. Sometimes though movies can be more
than movies; they become events which can pull you in and make you feel like you are a part of
the movie. No movies do that better than horror movies, which could have you sitting at the
edge of your seat in one minute, then have you cowering back in your seat the next minute. I
experienced a horror movie like that, it pulled me into the movie and made me feel everything
the main character felt. The movie is called The Forest. The movie uses effective scare tactics
such as creepy environment, jump scares, and psychological horror. The Forest is about a
woman going to find her twin sister who got lost in a forest. But it is not just any forest the
sister got lost in, it is the Aokigahara forest in Japan which is also called the suicide forest
because of the high amounts of suicides committed in the forest. The movie is able to utilize the
inherent creepiness in the forest, to keep the movie suspenseful and full of tension. Throughout
the movie the forest is eerily quiet and all you hear is the crunching of twigs under the protagonist
feet or the sound of the wind rustling the branches of the trees. All these sounds keep you at the
edge of your seat, wondering when the first ghost or ghoul will pop out. Since there is no real
music, and no signs when a jump scare could happen you are left

Since the beginning of time, we as humans have been searching for answers. Answers that are still
a common debate today. We search for answers to explain the many mysteries of the universe and
to justify our existence in it. Why are we on this particular planet? How did we get here? What
ignited the flame we call humanity? All these questions result in two contradictory answers, science
or religion? Additionally, the study of religion and science began during the classical times, it has
been studied by philosophers, theologians, scientists, and many others. We can understand science

Long Beach Plumbing Issues
Common Plumbing Mistakes When you have a plumbing issue, it is best to call a Long Beach
plumbing company instead of trying to deal with it yourself. There are a number of mistakes
that people make that warrant calling a plumbing company in Long Beach. Many people treat
their garbage disposals like a trashcan. While your garbage disposal does make things more
convenient, it should not be treated like a garbage disposal. Potato peels, grease and watermelon
rinds are examples of some things that you should not put in your garbage disposal. If there is
something wrong with your garbage disposal, then you should call a plumber in Long Beach.
Many people also have to call Long Beach plumbers because they flush items down the toilet that

Essay On Theodore Roosevelt s Impact On America
Out of all the men who have been President of the United States, there are some that just take the
cake of who were the most influential and important. Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and
Ronald Reagan being the top three. These three have impacted America tremendously from WW2
and helping the Cold war to ending The Great Depression. They were good leaders in a time of
need which makes them well known and unforgettable.
Theodore Roosevelt being the youngest president at age 42 was a great leader. He had many
accomplishments, even winning the Noble Peace Prize. The Russo Japanese War was going on
from 1904 05, he won the Noble Peace Prize by being the meditator of the peace between the two
countries. TR was a progressive leader and a trustworthy president even nicknamed Trust Buster.
His policies regarding trust and labor reform were part of what he called the Square Deal. TR was
a conservationist and naturalist, he preserved natural habitats and wildlife; more than 125 million
acres were set aside being protected by the public. Roosevelt combined an interest in military affairs

Roosevelt s New Deal programs or what are known as Alphabet Programs, focused on stabilizing
the economy by creating long term employment opportunities, helping homeowners pay

agricultural supply to increase prices. These programs were helpful and they effected people in a
positive way, many gained jobs out of them and a place to call home. All of his deals were
affective and some have even stuck around since then, that just goes to show what an impact

Types of Sports Fans
Professional sports has become one of the most popular industries in the world today. The media
spends billions of dollars on advertisements and teams spend millions of dollars on professional
athletes all for one reason, the fans. The fans ticket sales and merchandise purchases are what keeps
all the sport teams around and prevents professional athletes from losing their jobs. There are three
types of fans in the sports world, average fans, fanatics, and fair weather fans.
Fans that are fanatics are the ones who are diehard and will put their favorite team before almost
all other priorities. Their lives revolve around their favorite team and they will do ... Show more

Usually they will know all or the majority of the people on their team, but will not know every
aspect about them. This type of fan is the most common and will root on and follow their favorite
team, but their life is not completely consumed by it by any means. Other priorities still come
before their sports team and will not let their favorite team consume all of their time.
The last type of fan is a fair weather fan. This is the least liked fan and these fans irritate many
people. Fair weather fans will like one team one year and switch their favorite team the next year
because of recent success by the other team. These people are not truly sports fans, and will just
root for who is popular or whoever their peers like so they can fit in. Fair weather fans root for
teams that they do not follow because of excitement revolving around a team or because there are
some big names on the team that they have actually heard of. These people will like a team, but
will not follow them very closely and may only attend one or two sporting events a year at the most.
Fair weather fans will know the names of the star people on their team, but will not know the
majority of their favorite team. Usually they will not have much merchandise with their favorite
team on it either because they switch teams so much that they do not have tome to accumulate
many goods with their team on them.

Perception of God s Presence in Paton s Novel Cry, the...
Theoretically, the Bible states that God is always present alongside his people. Teach them to
obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this
age. Matthew 28:20. In the novel, Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, conveys a message
that God s presence is both acknowledged and ignored by the characters and a message to love thy
brother as yourself (Matthew 19:19) through forgivenessin spite of of skin color. Foremost, Stephen
Kumalo continuously seeks and lives in the presence of the Lord. Kumalo prays and asks Godfor
help on a daily basis. Tixo (God), watch over me, he says to himself. Tixo, watch over me (48).

One of the reasons why he no longer [goes] to the Church is because the Church too, is like the
chief (67 68). John is convinced that like the chief, the church orders its followers to obey the
laws, while neither the chief nor church have exactly the most updated understanding of the
developing world surrounding them. God s presence is nowhere to be found because John has
ignored him, has decided to depend on himself rather than God and no longer wants be tied

some importance, of some influence. I have my own business (66). God is completely absent
from John s life as he continues explaining how good his life is without God, about the white
man s trick and the injustice that is afoot. Because John concentrates most of his time, energy and
life gaining more and more information for his inspirational speeches, it becomes his obsession,
later his religion. Clearly, God s presence is ignored by his passion for worldly truths rather than
biblical ones. John s religion, which is built upon a foundation of the world around him, will
collapse down with its worldly problems. In general, John s fascination with earthly needs and
philosophy has separated him from God, thus causing John to stop seeking God s company and
making God seems absent. With this in mind, the reader can make a distinguishable difference

Difference Between A College Scholar And A Slacker
Let s face it, not all who choose to continue school past the 12th grade made the choice with the
best intentions in mind. When it comes the college, the next level of education after high school,
students who choose to attend will come from different nationalities, religions, and financial
backgrounds, but can almost always be classified into two categories the will define them during
the collegiate journey. Those categories are the scholars and the slackers. A college
scholar is one
who makes the best of their college experience and understands the main purpose of earning a
college degree. A college slacker is one who does not understand the main purpose of earning an

When it comes to the time spent on preparing yourself to do well, for scholars it always seems
like there is never enough and every bit of time is precious and must be used to put together
their best approach for either an upcoming quiz or test. A slacker must put together their best
approach for the upcoming party or concert and can honestly care less about a test grade. Now
when looking at a scholar and a slacker there are some similarities, even though they aren t
always easy to identify. There is nothing wrong with attending a party here or there or even
taking time to see your favorite musician. Scholars and slackers are initially given the same
resources and opportunities to do exceptional in their educational craft. What they choose the do
with those opportunities is what separates the two groups. The key to what determines if you use
your resources correctly and become a scholar or incorrectly and become a slacker is one in the

Two Spirits Native American Culture
Culture is a complex concept that incorporates society s beliefs, values, arts, attitudes and more.
People like to be able to categorize animals, objects and unfortunately people. This idea of
categorizing people has been around all throughout history. Whether it be race, religion, politics, or
gender, people like categorization. Ideas that stray from tradition and challenge cultural norms lead
to discrimination and ignorance. For example, in the late 1800s and early 1900s women did not
have the same rights as their male counterparts, and women continue to struggle to receive full
equality, the wage gap. Transgender or Two Spirited is when a person s personal identity and gender

It s really unfortunate our culture doesn t view transgender people the same as the Navajo tribe.
Transgender people and families of trans people have to cope with discrimination and hate daily.
The process of coming out is a lot different for transgender than coming out as gay. The coming out
process is very difficult and emotional for families. Going from having a daughter to a son or a son
to a daughter is a challenging, emotional process for families. Parents and families have to accept
new pronouns and name changes. That is if the family is understanding and accepting of having a
transgender son or daughter, unfortunately some parents are unaccepting. When parents don t want
anything to do with their child, the transgender person has no immediate support system. The child
has to cope with all the physical, mental, and emotional trials on their own. Not only does the child
have to deal with discrimination from society, they have to deal with discrimination from their own
parents, who are supposed to love them. Forty one percent of people in the transgender community
have tried to commit suicide. Like the documentary Two Spirits said, everyone has a purpose, we
should not discriminate against innocent transgender children or adults, or anyone for that

Imagine a world without hope, diversity, uniqueness, heroes and role models. Everybody would

person down to society s hopeless status. Personally, I couldn t stand a minute in a world like that.

It wasn t until that summer I walked across a bright yellow home. Through the windows, I could
see an Asian woman was playing a beautiful song on her black grand piano. The sound of her
music was like a stream of water running quietly through the green forest. From that moment, I
became inspired to learn how to play the piano. I decided to take piano lessons with her and
made it a goal to learn how to play the piano. My piano teacher, Ms. Li, was my role model
because she showed me that there are unique and fascinating things people can learn to do in this
world. As days turned to months and months turned into years, I continued to strive to become
my inspiration. Many times, I felt like the Indians on the reservation and just wanted to give up
because I felt it was too hard to make it to the top. Eight years later, I ve completed my piano
training. Today, people would always compliment my style of playing when I would play the
piano. Sometimes I would come across a very young boy or girl who wanted to learn how to
play the piano after they heard me play. I told them, If you put your mind to it, you can do
anything. My piano teacher has been and will always be my inspiration and role model. Today, I
have become a role model and inspiration for many people who want to learn how to play the
piano. Role models and heroes are important in shaping people s personalities and qualities
because they provide people with goals to strive for.

The Negative Speech On Intelligence

preparing, children who turn 17 by the September 13 of that year take an exam, which tests their
mental capacity. If the testee receives below a 75%, they are removed from the community . The
common citizens were told that testees with low scores were put into a community, one that
doesn t exist, that better suits their qualities. By law, my daughter, Ella, is required to take the
test. Ella received a 67.5%, meaning she didn t pass. Today, September 14, I remove the children
that did not pass. The teenagers enter my baren lab, decorated only with a large desk, covered in
syringes. There were 19 of them, Ella included, standing shoulder to shoulder in my undecorated
lab with stiff, unchanging, neutral expressions. Today, we will commence the first of the four
days that will be used to assign each of you to a different community. For the entirety of the
examination, you will be in this building. Because the citizens staying will be receiving their

Theme In this poem written by author Robert Frost, the poem focuses on the theme and the
mood by representing the choices and decisions that have to be made. The whole poem is based
on someone who spends time throughout his traveling journey making choices and knowing
that making the wrong choices can t be taken back once the choices and decisions have been
made. In the poem Frost wrote, Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not
travel both. (Frost, 1916) This is his way of setting the mood for the readers to get a better
understanding of where he was coming from as he explains how there are different paths in life
one can take, but one can only take one at a time in hopes of making the right decision. Frost
developed metaphors such as Two roads diverged in a yellow wood (Frost, 1916) throughout the

Medicine And Placebos Pills Treat Migraine Headaches
Placebos are used as a form of treatment for patients; placebos offer no medication but seem to
relieve patents of the pain and symptoms they have (Seymour, 2011). Medication has down sides,
such as creating drug dependencies and increased tolerance for the drug resulting in a decrease in
the amount of success that drug has to treat the pain. Placebos offer a medicine free treatment to
help patients deal with pain. Many studies have been done to examine the difference between
medicine and placebos pills to treat migraineheadaches. Placebos have been found to have similar
pain relieving effects to medicine, without the harmful risks the medication has (Seymour, 2011).
Title
Placebos were first introduced into the medical world in the late 18th century (Seymour, 2011).
Placebos are used as a therapeutic procedure that affects a patient and removes symptoms of an
illness or pain by giving them a sham pill with no actual medication in it (Seymour, 2011). A
placebo effect is therefore a change in the patient s symptoms or illness after a placebo is given
(Seymour, 2011). A nocebo on the other hand, is the negative equivalent of the placebo effect; when
a patient expects a negative outcome of a treatment he or she will experience the undesirable
outcome that was expected (Benedetti, Durando, Vighetti, 2014). Both placebo and nocebo effects
can be provoked by observing others, which causes the release of several neurotransmitters, such as
opioid, endocannabinoids and

Eco-feminism Essay
Today, we live in a world interwoven with women s oppression, ecological degradation, and the
exploitation of workers, race, and class. In the midst of these troubles, a movement known as
ecofeminism appears to be gaining recognition. In the following, I hope to illustrate this
revitalization movement . I will begin by characterizing a definition of ecofeminism; I will then
bring to the forefront the ethical issues that Ecofeminism is involved with, then distinguish primary
ideas and criticisms.
Though in theory, ecological feminism has been around for a number of years, it emerged as a
political movement in the 1970s. Francoise d Eaubonne, a French feminist philosopher, coined the
term Ecofeminism in 1974. Ecofeminism is a feminist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our western society has become a globalized world of high technology. There appears to be no
ability to see beyond, to see what we have encased ourselves in; an artificial environment that has
remarkably replaced the original, nature itself. We do not live with nature; we live above it, off it. I
find it to be rather paradoxical that nature can exist and has existed without humans, but humans
cannot exist without nature. Nature has become merely a resource to sustain our artificial
environment. I will exemplify certain dichotomies that support the aforementioned conceptual
framework.
Reason vs. Emotion
Culture vs. Nature
Scientific vs. Mystical
Rational vs. Intuitive
Hierarchy vs. Circle
Masculine vs. Female
Ecofeminists challenge the patriarchal conceptual framework and the accompanying dualistic

Friar Lawrence Guilty Analysis
In our lovely town of Verona, many terrible events have occurred recently, including the death of
one of our lovely youths, Juliet Capulet. Friar Lawrence, as we all know, has been here through
all of these tragedies, and he is the only person who can be blamed for the death of fair Juliet.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, although Friar Lawrence has most likely helped us all
throughout our lives, I must request that you all put aside your bias in this trial and aid the state in
putting this extremely dangerous man in prison where he belongs. The friar, a trusted member of
our society who always has good intentions, is guilty for the death of Juliet Capulet, and must be
punished for his actions and recent mistakes.
As members of Verona s society,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first mistake that Friar Lawrence committed was to give Juliet the vial that we have already
seen that she used. Before giving her this vial, the friar said, [...] if thou darest, I ll give thee
remedy (183). The friar is abusing the trust that Juliet has placed in him by giving her something
that could potentially injure her or even kill her. This, obviously, is not the duty of a devout
Christian man such as Friar Lawrence; he should never have put Juliet s life in danger by giving
her this vial. One can assume that without the friar s involvement and his abuse of Juliet s faith,
the results of this situation would have been very different. Though we cannot know for sure, it is
extremely likely that had Friar Lawrence not intervened, Juliet would not be in her family tomb
with the dead body of Romeo next to her. If the friar had acted as a man of virtue would be
expected to act then he never would have provided Juliet with such a potentially dangerous potion.
The second mistake that the friar made was much later when Juliet awoke from her drug induced
slumber. The friar states to Juliet at this point, I hear some noise. Lady, come from that nest/Of
death contagion, and unnatural sleep./...Thy husband in thy bosom there lies dead,/...Come, go,
good Juliet. I dare no longer stay . Juliet

  • 2. Big Two Hearted River Modernism Essay Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemingway is a prime example of Modernist writing. The main character Nick embarks on a quest for self discovery away from his fragmented society. After the war, Nick returns to a society with a loss of old values, structures, and beliefs. Therefore, Nick isolates himself in the wilderness upon returning. The reader experiences Nick s post war mentality, and sees the struggles Nick faces with anxiety about the unknown. It is clear that Nick s journey represents the modernist search for individuality in the midst of a broken society. While alone by the water, Nick witnesses a trout. Although it is just a simple trout, the way in which it moves provides a strong sense of meaning: A big trout shot upstream in a long angle, only his shadow marking the angle, then lost his shadow as he came through the surface of the water, caught the sun, and then, as he went back into the stream under the surface, his shadow seemed to float down the stream with the current, unresisting, to his post under the bridge where he tightened facing up into the current. ( Big Two Hearted River: Part I 1202) The fact that the trout swims upstream is significant in itself. This type of fish travels while fighting against current. This scene offers symbolism. The trout represents Nick, and the water symbolizes society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nick shows that he possesses this trait when he fishes. Nick did not like to fish with other men on the river. Unless they were part of your party, they spoiled it ( Big Two Hearted River Part II 1209). His desire for self isolation is a trait for the hero of modernism. Modernist heros are often alienated due to the brokenness of society. Since Nick wants to fish alone, it shows how he prefers to stray away from socialization. In addition, being alone grants Nick with a better opportunity to find himself as an individual in his fragmented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A typical good quality fingerprint template contains 20 70 minutiae points; the actual number depends on the size of the finger sensor surface and how the user places his or her finger on the sensor. The system stores the minutiae information position and direction along with the user s demographic information as a template in the enrollment database. During the identification phase, the user puts the finger on the same sensor, generating a new fingerprint image or template called query print. Minutiae points are carried out from the query print, and the matcher module compares the set of query minutia with the stored minutia templates or image in the enrollment database to find the number of similar minutia points. Because of variations present in finger placement and pressure applied to the sensor, the minutia points take out from the template and query fingerprints must be lined up, or submitted before matching. • 5. Literary Devices In The Destructors The Destructors The Destructors is a short fiction story by Graham Greene. The setting of the story is in London 9 years after the conclusion of World War II. The short story has to do with a group of teenage boys who call themselves the Wormsley Common gang, named after the area they live in. As a result of World War II, the area that the teenagers live in has been destroyed and many properties lay in ruins with the exception of one house. This is the house of Mr. Thomas who is known as Old Misery . The Wormsley Common ganghas planned to destroy the house of Old Misery because they wanted to gain fame and reputation in the area for being a tough gang. Another reason why they destroyed the house is because it reminded them of higher society, something that was out of reach for the teenagers. Throughout the short story, the theme that is being conveyed by Greene is the loss of innocence.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Trevor who is planning the destruction of Mr. Thomas s house says, It s a beautiful house but later goes on to say, We ll pull it down... We will destroy it . This paradox shows how Trevor continues on with his plan of destroying the house after he credited it for being beautiful . This shows how the teenagers have loss their innocence because they intend to destroy the last remaining house in the area, the house that symbolizes hope. Another example of a paradox would be how the gang wants to destroy Mr.Thomas s house but simultaneously, they are taking care of Mr. Thomas. For example, a member of the gang states, Here s a blanket, a voice said and a long grey sausage was worked through the hole . It shows how the gang wants to destroy the house not because of their dislike for Mr. Thomas but to destroy and bring down the last beautiful property in the area demonstrating their loss of innocence. Overall, the use of paradox by Greene helped in conveying the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Importance Of Equality In The French Revolution The French Revolution is a great example of how equality leads to peace and order; if the people of France were equal during the time of the Revolution, there would not have been so much conflict and reformation of government. I want to focus on equality because it is a topic that is dear to my heart for many reasons and I firmly believe that the lack of equal rights is what fueled the French Revolutionand led to the violence and chaos that occurred during that time. Due to the Monarchy that the French had at the time, citizens were under a feudal class system that kept their people from being equal in government. This division between classes is just one of the things that aided the violence that occurred during the French Revolution simply because people were not equal. No one was represented in government and no power was distributed amongst the people; therefore, people felt they were walked on and that their life was not as valuable. The imbalance of power drove people to violence because the citizens of France felt this was the only way to make themselves heard. This is just one example of how inequality led to the destruction of the society in France during the French Revolution. The Feudal Class System and active and passive citizenship were the main contributors to the lack of equality in France and that is why it fueled the French Revolution. The first issue that led to the revolution was misrepresentation in government. This misrepresentation I m referring is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zoetrope Studios produced the movie with a 10 million dollar budget (Clarke). The plot is primarily about the struggles of the main two characters, Rusty James (Matt Dillon) and his older brother the Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke). The film shows their journey of self discovery fueled by the desire to break away from the toxic environment, and end the constant internal conflict they experience. I think Coppola s unique approach to film was able to deliver certain themes in the audience in a way the novel alone couldn t. However, the no movie is completely free from external inspirations and I was able to draw parallels between some of the movie s major themes to earlier movies and detect traces of the French new wave. Another movie influence is the Cabinet of Calgary German expressionist and film noir are the main significant inspirations on the cinematographic style of Rumble Fish. Traces of those genres can be detected in the film s storyline, mise en scene, cinematography, and sound. • 8. Labor Rights In The Crucible Arthur Miller s play, The Crucible, takes place during the events of the Salem Witch trials in 1692. Miller states in his opening: When a man rises above the individual villainy displayed, one can only pity them all, just as we shall be pitied someday. It is impossible for man to organize himself without repression, and the balance has yet to be struck between order and freedom. Miller s parallels between Salem of 1692 and America of the 1950s apply to present day American society in racism, sexism, and workers rights. Children rely on their parents to nurture them as other mammalian offspring do on theirs. However, without the labor rights activists fighting against excessive working hour requirements, child labor, and minimal pay, most American children would be facing adult responsibilities such as paying for utility bills and meals, and would have minimal parent child relationships. Labor rights activists were suppressed by powerful corporations or companies and corrupt politicians, just as Miller stated, It is impossible for man to organize himself without repression, and the balance has yet to be struck between order and freedom. All three authors show some lines of thought on what the freedom inherent in the American dream means. The authors clarify distinct ideas on the means to achieving the American dream. Besides the freedom of opportunity, the freedom of self determination, the ability to decide your own fate, is shown to be inherent in the American dream. In The Death of a Salesman Biff determines his own destiny and thereby achieves the American dream. Rather than becoming a salesman as his father had hoped, Biff decided to work with his hands the lifestyle which he new he could enjoy. The poem Ellis Island said that the American dream is not achieved with the self determination of Americans, but rather, it is achieved by the theft of self determination from Native Americans. The line, When the earth became owned , tells the reader that Americans only enjoy success because they took America, the land of success, from its original residents, the Native Americans (Bruchac l. 22). The poem America and I mentions the freedom gained once people are liberated from constant hunger. It says, For the first time in America, I d cease to be a slave of the belly. I d be a creator, a giver, a human being (Yezierskal. 16 17). When freed from the constant need to find food, men can put their efforts towards achieving their dreams. Lack of internal control facilitated manipulation of company s assets and transactions. It gave the CFO the opportunity to falsify the documents and to create fictitious transactions. These transactions created formidable revenues on the company s books and made it easy to borrow money from banks. The weak external audit was the other opportunity that allowed Minkow to commit fraud. The auditor was not familiar with the company and its related parties. In addition, the auditors placed too much trust in management produced documents and failed to verify key transactions. These two important reasons gave Minkow an opportunity to commit fraud. 3.Rationalization: Minkow words, I started with the best of intentions, really I can say that, show that he started lying because it was an easy way to start and maintain his business. There are many negative effects that come with growing up in the inner city. Educational, psychological, and physical issues all certainly take a toll on an individual. However, you do not hear about suicide like I have so bluntly put it to you. We see suicide on the news and social media and it is written so positively. Wondering whether I was ever going to feel like I know exactly what I am doing and why. Was I ever going to stop being nervous when starting an IV or inserting a Foley catheter. Was I ever going to handle a full assignment of four patients, in busy Emergency Room (ER), without the help of a preceptor. As fast as those feelings overwhelmed me, they have disappeared. Short term goals are often a stop along the way to our long term goals (Planning for the future para. 3). My second professional goal being long term in is to go from a registered nurse (RN) level II to a level III RN. The hospital that I work for offers room for advancement through a three level tier program. Starting with my basic RN license, moving toward level II and then onto level III, each advancement comes through educational and specified guidelines established by the hospital and set forth in a hospital policy. Prior to going back to school I was able to attain my level II status. However, the requirements for a level III require the achievement of a Bachelor s degree and certification in a specialized field. This means acquiring a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certificate. I anticipate my graduation from the BSN program to be in May 2012 and then giving me six months to study for and mastering the CEN test. At that time I will obtain an updated copy of the policy and requirements and revisit the application process to becoming a level III RN. Many wonder what it means to be masculine, and if we can really assign a definition to such a subjective term. After all, shouldn t one s own perception be the determinant of what constitutes masculinity? This self construction would be the ideal in our society, but unfortunately, it represents a false belief. Masculinity has certain characteristics assigned to it by our culture. The violence boy s witness on television further legitimates this belief. Katz explains that advertising imagery equates masculinity with violence. For boys this means aggression is instrumental in that it enables them to establish their masculinity (Katz 1995). Lee Bowker researched the influence advertisements have on youth. He asserts that toy advertisements featuring only boys depict aggressive behavior. Strangely, the aggressive behavior generally results in positive consequences more often than negative. Bowker also looked at commercials with boys that contain references to domination. The results of all the commercials indicate that 68.6% of the commercials positioned toward boys contain incidents of verbal and physical aggression. There was no cross amp;#64979;gender display of aggressive behavior. Interestingly, not one single sex commercial featuring girls shows any act of aggression (Bowker 1998). This research helps explain that it is not just the reinforcement of close caretakers to the child that legitimate masculinity but society as a whole (using the television as a symbol of society and it s desires).Another example of how this can be reinforced even by women who may or may not be trying to promulgate such a belief is with an experience I had growing up:When I would get a cut or a bruise, I would muster up all the strength I had to not cry. The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive in the soil. A question that is very important as the answer affects everything that mankind knows about morality, the universe, and the meaning of life itself. This question has been asked by men and women from all walks of life and it would seem that for every question answered concerning this topic a dozen more arise. Philosophers to Scientists to Kings have all pondered this question and this question is whether or not God exists. Now there are various conceptions of God within philosophy, but the most simple and widely accepted definition would likely be a metaphysically necessary being. That will be the definition of God for this paper. Numerous arguments have been put forth for and against the existenceof a God, and some can be grouped together according to their type. Examples of these arguments range from teleological arguments to axiological arguments to cosmological arguments (to name a few). The following paper will focus on cosmological arguments, in particular the Argument from Contingency. Ancient philosophers would look at the stars and would marvel at their beauty and would point to their structure as an indication of the order within the universe. These ancient thinkers would take this as a sign of the existence of gods/god. With time came those who put forth arguments that drew from what was seen in the night sky to argue for the existence of their god /gods. Notable names like Plato and Aristotle are just a few ... After nearly six years of depression, the United States was ravaged with an unemployment rate of 25% and many others had lost everything they owned due to the collapse of the internal banking market. The future looked grim for most Americans because even those with jobs had barely any purchasing power due to enormous interest rates and high inflation. Theme is what the characters and the audience are supposed to take away after finishing the story. In Hercules and The Iliad, the overall themes of each story help to almost determine the conflict to come, and how that conflict will help to shape the character. Many consider the main theme of The Iliad to be the very first line in the entire epic poem, in which a muse sings a song about the wrath of Achilles . This opening line of dialogue sets up the epic in a way that enable a lot of conflict to be set up. Sometimes though movies can be more than movies; they become events which can pull you in and make you feel like you are a part of the movie. No movies do that better than horror movies, which could have you sitting at the edge of your seat in one minute, then have you cowering back in your seat the next minute. I experienced a horror movie like that, it pulled me into the movie and made me feel everything the main character felt. The movie is called The Forest. The movie uses effective scare tactics such as creepy environment, jump scares, and psychological horror. The Forest is about a woman going to find her twin sister who got lost in a forest. But it is not just any forest the sister got lost in, it is the Aokigahara forest in Japan which is also called the suicide forest because of the high amounts of suicides committed in the forest. The movie is able to utilize the inherent creepiness in the forest, to keep the movie suspenseful and full of tension. Throughout the movie the forest is eerily quiet and all you hear is the crunching of twigs under the protagonist feet or the sound of the wind rustling the branches of the trees. All these sounds keep you at the edge of your seat, wondering when the first ghost or ghoul will pop out. Since there is no real music, and no signs when a jump scare could happen you are left ... Medicine And Placebos Pills Treat Migraine Headaches Placebos are used as a form of treatment for patients; placebos offer no medication but seem to relieve patents of the pain and symptoms they have (Seymour, 2011). Medication has down sides, such as creating drug dependencies and increased tolerance for the drug resulting in a decrease in the amount of success that drug has to treat the pain. Placebos offer a medicine free treatment to help patients deal with pain. Many studies have been done to examine the difference between medicine and placebos pills to treat migraineheadaches. Placebos have been found to have similar pain relieving effects to medicine, without the harmful risks the medication has (Seymour, 2011). Title Placebos were first introduced into the medical world in the late 18th century (Seymour, 2011). Placebos are used as a therapeutic procedure that affects a patient and removes symptoms of an illness or pain by giving them a sham pill with no actual medication in it (Seymour, 2011). A placebo effect is therefore a change in the patient s symptoms or illness after a placebo is given (Seymour, 2011). A nocebo on the other hand, is the negative equivalent of the placebo effect; when a patient expects a negative outcome of a treatment he or she will experience the undesirable outcome that was expected (Benedetti, Durando, Vighetti, 2014). Before giving her this vial, the friar said, [...] if thou darest, I ll give thee remedy (183). The friar is abusing the trust that Juliet has placed in him by giving her something that could potentially injure her or even kill her. This, obviously, is not the duty of a devout Christian man such as Friar Lawrence; he should never have put Juliet s life in danger by giving her this vial. One can assume that without the friar s involvement and his abuse of Juliet s faith, the results of this situation would have been very different. Though we cannot know for sure, it is extremely likely that had Friar Lawrence not intervened, Juliet would not be in her family tomb with the dead body of Romeo next to her. If the friar had acted as a man of virtue would be expected to act then he never would have provided Juliet with such a potentially dangerous potion.
