Friar Lawrence Guilty Analysis
In our lovely town of Verona, many terrible events have occurred recently, including the death of
one of our lovely youths, Juliet Capulet. Friar Lawrence, as we all know, has been here through
all of these tragedies, and he is the only person who can be blamed for the death of fair Juliet.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, although Friar Lawrence has most likely helped us all
throughout our lives, I must request that you all put aside your bias in this trial and aid the state in
putting this extremely dangerous man in prison where he belongs. The friar, a trusted member of
our society who always has good intentions, is guilty for the death of Juliet Capulet, and must be
punished for his actions and recent mistakes.

The first mistake that Friar Lawrence committed was to give Juliet the vial that we have already
seen that she used. Before giving her this vial, the friar said, [...] if thou darest, I ll give thee
remedy (183). The friar is abusing the trust that Juliet has placed in him by giving her something
that could potentially injure her or even kill her. This, obviously, is not the duty of a devout
Christian man such as Friar Lawrence; he should never have put Juliet s life in danger by giving
her this vial. One can assume that without the friar s involvement and his abuse of Juliet s faith,
the results of this situation would have been very different. Though we cannot know for sure, it is
extremely likely that had Friar Lawrence not intervened, Juliet would not be in her family tomb
with the dead body of Romeo next to her. If the friar had acted as a man of virtue would be
expected to act then he never would have provided Juliet with such a potentially dangerous potion.
The second mistake that the friar made was much later when Juliet awoke from her drug induced
slumber. The friar states to Juliet at this point, I hear some noise. Lady, come from that nest/Of
death contagion, and unnatural sleep./...Thy husband in thy bosom there lies dead,/...Come, go,
