The documentary, Solitary Confinement, really brings to light the issues that
surround this old form of punishment. These tactics were used in the past, and then
were eventually regarded as being cruel and inhumane. Somehow, the idea of
solitary confinement has returned and is respected among many people. I believe
that there are some people who do need to be put in solitary confinement and some
who shouldn t have to go through that psychological pain. The movie did shine some
perspective on to me, as i had not nearly any clue as to what really went down behind
those walls.
First of all, at Colorado State Penitentiary, they call it administrative segregation
rather than solitary confinement. This is because their goal is supposedly, just to cut
them off from physical contact until they are determined to be safe around other
people. The feelings projected by the men being interviewed in the documentary tie
in with the feelings that Stanley Tookie Williams expressed in his book, Life in Prison
. All of the inmates, including Stanley, acknowledged that solitary confinement, or
the hole, causes people to go crazy. Stanley complained of the small cells and how it
made many men go stir crazy. In the film, they showed exactly how small the cells are

Middle school and high school were very different for me. Both schools lack
diversity and consisted of people just like me, but in middle school everyone s
identity were practically the same. I attended Catholic school until high school and
had all white classes until then too. Throughout middle school I was a rather
mischievous student who did not place academics too highly on my list of
priorities, so I was often making the teacher s job much harder than it needed to be.
If not for how involved my family and I were with the church and the school my in

school with grade 3 8 in it was never addressed. In middle schoolalmost everyone was
middle classor at least were not struggling like some of the families in more urban

Throughout my research for this project I have found several sites. Some of the sites
I have found contain numerous amounts of information, though many don t have the
correct information that I am looking for in relation to my topic. Many of the
articles I have read are interviews of adults who grew up as a refugee children. In my
opinion, I think that the interviews are the most interesting, however it does not give
me as much information as I am looking for.

In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the
characters through different ways. In Disabled , Owen paints a vivid, moving
picture of a soldier who has been injured in World War One and lost his legs and an
arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war, consequently witnessing first
hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the poem, Out,
Out , Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to
Shakespeare s metaphor in Macbeth s soliloquy Out, out, brief candle , which
