The first of Igor Stravinsky s three famous early ballets, The Firebird is the most
traditional and derivative. While The Firebird, similar to Petrushka and The Rite Of

Although it was The Firebird ballet, first performed in Paris in 1910, that began his
international career, and although the orchestral suite has remained his most popular
work, he was still a little embarrassed by it years afterwards. The original wastefully
large instrumentation he revised in 1919, when he wrote a second suite, and again in
1945, when he put together a third and longer orchestral suite. Such critical actions,
he said, are stronger than words.
The scenario for Firebird, as adapted by Fokine, follows an old Russian folk tale.
The Tsarevitch, Prince Ivan, is hunting the elusive Firebird, and during the night
he wanders into a magical garden (Introduction). As he walks through the garden
he sees the Firebird, a beautiful bird with dazzling plumage (The Firebird and her
Dance and Firebird Variation). Ivan captures the Firebird, but agrees to let her go
free, after taking one of her feathers as a trophy. At sunrise, Ivan meets thirteen
princesses, who have come into the garden to dance and play with golden apples
from the garden s orchard (Round Dance of the Princesses). Ivan learns that the
garden belongs to the evil magician king Kaschei, who has enchanted the princesses,
and who has the ability to turn his enemies into stone. The prince, now in love with

Essay to Compare and evaluate two philosophical arguments for the existence of God.
Throughout the course of this essay we shall examine two of the major philosophical
arguments for the existence of God. The arguments that we are going to focus on
shall be the Design argument and the Ontological argument. We shall compare,
evaluate and discuss both the Design (or teleological) argument for the existence of
God and the Ontological Argument for the existence of God, as well as highlighting
philosophical criticisms of both theories too. By doing so, we shall attempt to draw a
satisfactory conclusion and aim gain a greater understanding of the respective
theories and their criticisms of each theory.
The Design Argument
Firstly, we shall focus on the Design (or to use its philosophically technical term, the
teleological argument). There are numerous variants of the Design argument,
however we shall be focusing on Paley s version (reference 1) of this theory. Paley
s version of the Design argument is based upon the idea that by looking around at
certain features of the world (for example an inanimate object like a rock or say a
living creature like dolphin or a person like myself) and theorising that they are too
complex and intricate to randomly just manifest. They must have been created by a
higher, more intelligent power and thus, if this is accepted as being so, then this
proves beyond doubt that God exists.

39. The Hypocrisy Of The Upper Class By Edith Wharton
Edith Wharton s novel, House of Mirth, develops a critical view of the immorality
of the upper class through Lily Bart and her failure to fully attain social mobility.
Wharton comments on the corruption of the upper class, and implies that the
acquisition of wealth and social status comes at the cost of a compromised moral
sense. While some wealthy individuals may not necessarily be corrupt, it is clear
that the upper class as a whole is primarily concerned with self preservation and
personal gain. This narcissism in the higher classes often leads to a blatant disregard
of others, accompanied by a lack of understanding of the consequences of their
actions. Thus, the social eliteare often plagued with corruption and immorality, as
evidenced throughout the novel. Wealth brings power and status to the social
elite, and ultimately becomes the source of their corruption. Perhaps the best
example of this is Bertha Dorset. In the beginning of the novel, as Lily is
contemplating her gambling debts at Bellomont, she considers how envious she is
of Dorset, who she describes as a woman who could take a man up and toss him
aside as she willed, without having to regard him as a possible factor in her plans
(Wharton). Unlike Lily, Bertha s wealth gives her financial security, and thus has no
real necessity to win over the affections of men. As such, she has significantly less

Federalism can be perceived as quite complicated although, when explained can be
quite simple. Its basic definition is that it is the share of powers between national
and subnational governments. Canadian federalism was born along with the country

In a decentralized country, each type of government is... free to delegate its powers
to other bodies if it so desires and does not focus all responsibilities upon one form of
government. Nonetheless, a federation being centralized or decentralized is not black
and white; what is not centralized is decentralized is not necessarily true in many

In society, movies and television shows often show aspects of group and group
interactions, especially between teenagers. Although there are many examples of
this, one movie that shows multiple group dynamics in American culture is The
Breakfast Club. The movies shows how aspects of society affect the way that
people behave, who they choose to surround themselves with, and how people
view others. The Breakfast Club greatly exemplifies group dynamics, in this case,
between teenagers. The group of students start off as a disconnected group of kids
from all different backgrounds and lifestyles. For the most part the kids are not
friends and as far as they can tell at first, don t have anything in common. This
causes conflict between them; they argue about their backgrounds, they make fun of
each other, and they judge each other because of how different each one of them is
from everyone else. The kids have conflicting views and can t see eye to eye.
Overtime this begins to somewhat change. As they are forced to spend more time
with each other, they begin to work together to protect and cover for one another.
They help each other hide from the teachers at the school, and protect each other from
getting in too much trouble. The characters realize that they actually have more in
common than they thought. They begin to look past each other s differences and get
brought together by the fact that they are all in detention together and want to make
