Dengue fever is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and is caused by any of the five dengue virus serotypes. It causes diseases ranging from dengue fever to the more severe dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. There are 50 million infections annually resulting in 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever and 22,000 deaths. There is currently no vaccine for dengue and treatment involves managing symptoms, with blood transfusions used for dengue hemorrhagic fever. The dengue virus is replicated inside host cells with proteins such as NS1, NS3, NS4B and NS5 playing important roles in viability and replication.
