Discuss the Impact of the Automobile’s Rise on Urban Form...
Discuss the impact of the automobile s rise on urban form during the twentieth century and critically
evaluate planning measures used to limit the negative social and environmental aspects Since the rise
of the automobile, there have been many dramatic changes to urban form in attempts to accommodate
this new mode of transport. Focusing on America and Britain, this discussion considers influences on
all scales ranging from reclassification of physical roads to the decentralization of urban cores. The
rising social and environmental concerns caused by the increase in vehicle usage include pedestrian
safety, residential livability, and environmental deterioration. I have decided to explore this question

Lippincott suggested the widening of existing streets and new diagonal arteries dedicated only to
traffic , these plans alone would cut across the existing urban fabric dramatically (see figure 1).
Eventually, the study led to formations of Major Street Traffic Plans, written by Olmsted,
Bartholomew and Cheney from 1929. When implemented, the plans altered urban form in American
cities with new openings, extensions and street patterns to reduce barriers to traffic (Roth, 2007).
Figure 1. Proposed Plans for Downtown, Los Angeles
(Traffic Commission of City and County of Los Angeles, 1924)
To an extent, the Major Street Plans and motorways were planning measures to limit social and
environmental externalities. Separating pedestrian, streetcar, and auto traffic enhanced the form of
urban areas and provided an efficient, coordinated street system, for example improved traffic
crossings ensured maximum pedestrian safety (Brown, 2006). With the separation of mobility and
access, crossings and passageways secured pedestrian safety in high traffic areas. However, with cities
serving as places of innovation and creative hubs of the economy , it is assumed that the mass
population would favour proximity to central business districts (Jacobs, 1961). Considering a lower
population residing in outskirt regions and motorway infrastructures encircling cities, consequently,
the separation of pedestrian and

Social Expectations In Lord Of The Flies
People are used to living in an orderly, civilized society with many different social expectations and
structures. A dependency is built on this civil life, and people find it difficult to live their lives without
rules and order. The children in William Golding s Lord of the Flies come from a life like this, from
school in England. When this orderly life, full of expectations and civility, is taken away from them,
they are forced to adapt and reach for their most basic human instincts. They attempt to maintain a
grip on societal structures but eventually slip into a violent fight for survival. As the earliest of humans
did, the boys live without society or civilization shaping their behavior. The deepest instincts of
humans are based on those behaviors developed and utilized by the earliest of humans. When societal
structure and social expectations are stripped away, humans will revert to their deepest and most
primal instincts. People will often conform to social norms, but they will stop when they are no longer
expected to. It is easy for people to just follow what everybody else is doing and what they are
expected to do; this is what society is built on and how civilization stays intact. According to a 2011
Stanford University philosophy article: We prefer to comply with the norm on the basis of having
certain expectation (Bicchieri Muldoon). This indicates that when there are no longer any expectations
to follow, people will not maintain the behaviors previously

Mass Extermination Research Paper
What can the human race do to ensure that another mass extermination never happens again? That
depends the human race being united to fight it. All cultures have distinguished people into categories
of us and them : ethnicity, race, religion, nationality. We don t see ourselves as one people, but as
multiple peoples defending ourselves against others. We don t see other races as human beings, either.
Because we grow up and live apart from other cultures and languages, we see other human beings
unlike us as peculiar to ourselves dehumanizing them. We create imaginary borders around our own
kind and shut out other groups. If we, as one human race, overcame these boundaries, then the
extermination of large groups of people would cease. Another

Essay on Adultery Explored in The Scarlet Letter
That Nathaniel Hawthorne to chose such a controversial topic as adultery for The Scarlet Letter, his
nineteenth century novel of seventeenth century sexual repression and hypocrisy (Zabarenko PG),
demonstrates a delicate yet changing climate with regard to infidelity.
Historically, carrying on an adulterous affair back in such an era of Puritanism and traditional values
was not taken lightly; in fact, by today s standards, such horrific treatment for what is now considered
an everyday occurrence was more harsh than murders suffer by current standards.
Those who acted out of the vows of matrimony centuries ago, as Hester Prynne did in The Scarlet
Letter, paid a high price for their momentary pleasures of the flesh. In those days, the ... Show more

In truth, they had little patience for much display of immorality at all, which ultimately became
misinterpreted as a complete and total abhorrence to sexuality of any kind. This was not true, however,
yet their strict moral code did not bode well with outsiders, making them appear ultra conservative.
What is clear within the context of historical consideration is the emphasis placed upon judgement. To
determine what is right for one yet not for another; to cast one s opinion over the entire populace as a
painter might broadly stroke a blank canvass; to conclude that a person is wrong by the very act he
commits behind closed doors, is to be harshly and unfairly judgmental.
Small town mentality is wracked with judgement. There is no escaping its suffocating presence.
Historically, communities were one entity where the private business of everyone was worn much like
the Scarlet Letter itself: out in the open for everyone to know.
There was no sense of privacy within a world of snoops and busy bodies. Had there been even the
slightest reprieve from such intrusions upon one s intimacy, it very well may be that Prynne s
shameful act of adultery would have been judged by the one entity permitted to draw such a
conclusion: God.
One of the most saddening aspects of The Scarlet Letter is its historically paralyzing approach when
dealing with Prynne s extramarital affair. It was clear that she and Dimmesdale were in

The Cycle Of Fear In Monsters Are Due On Maple Street
Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the
beginning of wisdom. (Bertrand Russell). It is our fear that we must conquer, and none other than The
Twilight Zone shows such examples. The Twilight Zone is a television show from the 1960s that is
made up of short stories in which an anomalous portal affects situations, giving a pessimistic outlook
on humanity as a species, especially on human nature. In the story, Monsters are Due on Maple Street
, the anomalies (aliens) create a series of events that make people have suspicious thoughts, and the
cycle of malicious thoughts lead to people scapegoating each other, and eventually killing each other,
finishing their job for them. We (humanity) are the monsters.
Humanity s thoughts are one of it s most deadliest weapons. For example, A last example of thoughts
is when Tommy began speak of about aliens. Tommy s thoughts kick off the entire event that makes
everyone kill each other. Not only that, but his fantasy world made Pete van Horn die. (It s the
monster!). A second example would be on page 7, when it says Charlie: He was an oddball. Him and
his whole family. Real oddball, (Serling, pg. 7). Even though he probably thought that the Goodmans
weren t that special, he thinks that someone is an alien, and that impairs his ability to think rationally.
And as another word on thoughts, on page 7, Nothing.... (then, meaningfully) nothing except one car

The Breath Of Other People Killed Them
Throughout the eighteenth century great strides were being made in the medical field regarding the
understanding of disease, biology, and public health. With the contributions of scientists, doctors, and
researchers the overall health of the ever growing population in the eighteenth century began to
improve dramatically. By the early nineteen hundreds, life expectancy had risen to about 55 years. The
introduction and understanding of antiseptics, sterilization, and etiology and discoveries of Pasteur,
Lister, and Koch invoked a rise against disease which lead to a rise in life expectancy. All throughout
history humans have had to face disease in all of its many different forms. This forced them to develop
many different ways of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine occurred in the late eighteenth with the discovery of
Louis Pasteur and his experiments regarding the growth of bacteria and their ability to travel from
place to place. After countless years of research and analyzation, Pasteur used his findings to develop
pasteurization (Haigh). Pasteurization is a process which involves heating certain liquids to kill
bacteria and prevent fermentation. Pasteur also developed an anthrax vaccine along with a way to
weaken the effects of the rabies virus. Using the work of Pasteur another scientist by the name of
Joseph Lister developed antisepsis, a way of killing disease causing germs. In 1865 before an
operation, Lister cleaned a leg wound with carbolic acid and performed the surgical procedure with
heated instruments, heating the instruments sterilized them (Gieson). The patient in question would
have needed an amputation if it was not for Lister sterilizing medical instruments and the surgical
field. Eventually, Lister incorporated the use of sterilization in all of his surgical procedures,
decreasing the amount of postoperative mortality. The use of antiseptics did not just reduce
postoperative mortality it also helped out in the treatment of wounds and making childbirth a less
risky process for both women and their children.
Another scientist that lead to great reform in the medical community, science, and public health was

Is Rehash And Put On The Tube The Negativity Of Life For...
Why rehash and put on the tube the negativity of life for every recurring commemoration? It s
important to know what happened and remember the outcomes in our hearts, then put it to rest. Why
keep it alive and let the wounds keep on burning? Showing, and talking about it, keeps it alive and as
such, is an inspiration for the weak minds. We saw and heard the mimicking of those saddening
episodes multiplying, instead than diminishing, not to mention the special interest that lies behind the
feeding of the pain, orchestrated for the money that such recurrence can generate. What can be
targeted as a negative impact shouldn t be kept alive, but replaced with a positive, for a positive
inspiration as a simple and healthy equation. They say we have to remember the negative that was
done. I say: I rather forget it, remembering a happy positive one, makes me feel better. What we are
projecting with our minds, is what we get, the option selected and what derives out of it, is rightfully
ours. We are wasting so much time, we are falling short in the progress of formulating a better world.
The reasons for such a delay, is due to the politicians trapped in their contorted games played under
the financial kingdom rules and the shortsightedness of their thousand dollar suit soldiers ruled by
their unconscious fears. This is a mechanism that covers such a large gamut that falls too short for
fairness, leaving the state of affairs mutilated with no sign in sight of a very much needed

The Open Boat
After surviving a shipwreck and being stuck on a ten foot dingy in the cold January waters with three
other men as they endure two days on the open sea. The short story by Stephen Crane The Open Boat
tells the journey through the narrative s point of view of man vs nature and the potent relations, he
retains with the three other passengers as they are forced to work together to survive. The narrative s
survival shows the compassion he gains of his comrades and new life that is embraced through a
mighty recovery after his life is saved. Unknown as what might be ahead all four men embrace the
hearty sea at full force working hard to break through the endless waves. The correspondent and the
oiler rowed together as the cook bailed out water and the captain laid in the bow of the boat injured
but able to give orders. All four men working fiercely, but questioning their fate as they embrace the
open ocean in a dinghy described to be as big as a bathtub. The mind of the master of a vessel is
rooted deep in the timbers of her, though he command for a day or a decade; and this caption had on
him the stern impression of a scene in the grays of dawn of seven turned faces, and later a stump of a
topmast with a white ball on it, that slashed to a fro at the waves, went low and lower, and down. This
expression told from the narrative portrays the caption who is the mind of the master of the vessel to
be hopeless which has everyone in the dinghy questioning their survival. As dawn breaks through and
the sun begins to rise all four men are still hard at work trying to keep the dinghy afloat and in steer

the situation by being optimistic Bully good thing it s an on shore wind. he says and then following

the captain snickering at the remark and replying Do you think we ve got much of show now, boys?

Napoleon And Stalin Animal Farm Essay
Animal Farm is a political allegory concerning power about the Russian Revolution. At the beginning
of Animal Farm , power was used to achieve great things. It brought all animals of Manor Farm
together but after an initial influence of power, it began to destroy the community that they had
worked together to form. This can be seen by the character development of Napoleon who is thought
to potray Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union during the mid 1920 s. They were both leaders
that abused their power and used ruthless methods to rule over the community. For instance, Napoleon
and Stalin both abused their given power, one of the similarities between them was their act of
violence. In the novella, Animal Farm by George orwell, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novella, Animal Farm , by George Orwell, Orwell states, Napoleon had accepted, through
Whymper, a contract for four hundred eggs a week.... Their method was to fly up the rafters and there
lay their eggs, which smashed to pieces on the floor.... He [Napoleon] ordered the hens rations to be
stopped and decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen should be punished by
death (pg.68). This means that Napoleon killed all the chickens because they didn t want to give them
anymore eggs. Napoleon never consulted with the hens to give up their products. This is to symbolise
what Stalin did in the past when he wanted to take the lands away from profiting farmers because
private property is against the government and socialism. Both of them tried to control the food
production and would not mind killing to get the production process smoother. Furthermore, both
dictators ruled over their subjects with an iron hand. Orwell states, ...but it was cruel work, and the
animals could not feel so hopeful about it as they had felt before. They were always cold and usually
hungry as well (pg 66). This means that Napoleon would make the animals work hard no matter how
the harsh conditions were. In relation to this, Stalin made loyal proletariat workers work hard until
they got too tired and incompetent. Overall, both dictators governed their people

Another landmark Supreme Court decision came in 1988 in the case of
Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier. In 1983 the principal of Hazelwood East
High School removed two articles from the school newspaper. He objected to these articles because
they described three students experiences with pregnancy and divorce. He felt that topics such as these
would be inappropriate for student readers. The school board voted in favor of the principal s action.
Cathy Kuhlmeier and several other students sued the school district in the U.S.
District Court of St. Louis. Despite claiming that their 1st and 14th Amendment rights had been
violated, the Court found no violations. After taking the case to the United States Court of Appeals,
their case was taken to United States
Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, however, also upheld the principal s actions finding no violation
of their rights. They said that because the newspaper was run by school officials, that it could be
controlled by them, quot;so long as their actions related to legitimate pedagogical concerns quot;.
This case also had some arguments to consider. The school district said that students rights are not
violated when educators use editorial control for educational reasons. Kuhlmeier believed that this
was unconstitutional. The school district said that because the paper was

problems would arise if freedom of speech was limited. It will be submitted by 18/10/2012. 2.
Findings 2.1 Who decides on the limitations of freedom of speech? The concept of Freedom of speech
is one which is held sovereign by many constitutions and individuals, especially within the American

The freedom of press within Cuba is also highly restricted, as are the media material available to

decides to do so they can be punished under one of the many ridiculously strict jail terms within their
constitution and they are also unable to listen to foreign radio broadcasts. The result in Cuba
restricting freedom of speech to such a high standard is the population within prisons are soared to an
imaginable number, meaning less space for the more serious criminals as most of the cells are
occupied by Journalists. 3. Conclusion It can be concluded that, by investigating the many factors of
the concept of freedom of speech, it should not be limited. Of course, it is considered that many
individuals or political bodies take advantage of the constitutional law, but because of the law they are
punished accordingly. If

Qantas Internal Analysis Essay

0.5% growth is expected in the upcoming years. It is predicted that by 2017 the total revenues will

In the event that a fire does start, suppression activities would be carried out faster and more
effectively than those areas that have gone without treatment. Proof of this can be found within a
study that was done after the 2002 Biscuit Fire that happened within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in
Southern Oregon. Scientists on a research team studied the damage of the fire in areas that had
previously been treated by having ground and ladder fuels removed via thinning/cutting and
prescribed underburning. These areas showed the least tree mortality of any other areas within the fire.
The areas with the highest tree mortality included those that had been thinned but ground fuels had not
been removed as well as areas that had had no prior treatment. David Peterson, a research biologist
stated, Biologists have known this in principal for many years...the Biscuit Fire gave us a chance to

and its resources need to be protected. Meanwhile, wildfires that have the potential to be prevented

education services in Australia by 1997. Led by founder Eddy Groves, ABC Learning Ltd continued to
grow, through the opening of new centres and the acquisitions of rivals i.e. peppercorn Childcare in
2004 in which 450 centres were purchased for $340 million. By 2008, ABC Learning was the largest
provider of childcare, holding around 20 per cent of the long day care market and providing care to
over 100 000 children (Senate education, employment workplace relations committee, 2009).

Mr Groves corporate governance practices were poor, and is currently in legal proceedings regarding
interparty transactions, this was certainly news worthy, and damaged the company s reputation and
slowed investor confidence. Additionally, the price paid to companies was deemed to be above market
norms, siphoning more money from the companies depleted coffers.
Critics are focused on the mess of the books for ABC Learning Centres Ltd, specifically the complex
way in which revenue and profits were accounted for, particularly the way compensation payments
from centre developers were counted as revenue (Thompson 2008). The Financial position of ABC
Learning centres was misrepresented and projected a positive image of the financials, until Auditors
Ernst and Young were required to pour over the books after the collapse.
All of these issues are summed up in Thompsons (2008) assertion that Groves was the right man to
grow the business but not the right man to manage the business, had the right manager been in place
then the organization may have been able to turn its fortunes around.
The Ethical Issues of the case: Firstly there is a significant Ethical and morale lapse in a share floated

times it has a strong manufacturing tradition. During the colonial period, West Bengal was one of the
leading states having the highest contribution to nation s industrial output and employment and
continued this trend till the 1960 s.Post 1960, the state started losing its prominence and witnessed
reduced productivity and labour militancy on a grand scale. This trend continued till the late 90 s, but
the turning point came after 2000 where there has been a resurgence in the state s industrial sector.

signify ownership of a product or the origin of the product. Branding was first used to brand livestock.
The act of marking livestock with fire heated marks to identify ownership has origins in ancient times,
with use dating back to the ancient Egyptians. Under the law of animus revertendi according to Barron

The 19th century saw the beginning of packaged goods, giving rise to businesses like P G, Kellogg,

marketing tool. The industrial revolution, new communications and transport systems and the growth
in technology made it easier for companies to advertise brands over larger regions. Most importantly,
better means of transporting goods emerged. Manufacturers transported goods mostly by ship before

The Middle East And Northern Africa Essay
The Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA)
My initial impressions of the Middle East and Northern Africa are they are desolate, poor, and
primarily Muslim. Although I know there is an infrastructure in the cities that is not how I viewed the
overall majority of these two countries. The terms political unrest and upheaval, also come to mind.
When all you see on the news are war torn areas in these countries, the view you come out with is
skewed by what the media introduces you to. Many thoughts also run through ones head when you
ponder what to expect when you approach these countries about business opportunities. I do not
believe I am ethnocentric when it comes to other countries and their culture, albeit I have a perception
which is stifled and constricted by those skewed views in which we are shown. I also feel there is only
two classes, the haves and have nots, if you will. The haves living in the cities with an infrastructure,
and the have nots living in shacks without any of modern day conveniences.
Although my impressions were uninformed, the information you provided in the video confirmed
what I believed as well as gave me additional insight into those countries with which I was unfamiliar.
In the video you reviewed two specific cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt Dubai and
Cairo. These two cities are vastly different from each other, however, I originally viewed them to be
similar in several areas like terrain, language, and religion. The

The Shareholders Of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd
Earnings per share (also called net income per share) is a ratio that measures net income earned per
share of stock outstanding, and is the money each share of stock would receive if all of the profits
were distributed to the outstanding shares at year end. The higher the EPS, the better the business is as
an investment from a shareholders perspective. EPS could be due to an increase in profit or a decrease
in the number of shares in issue, which causes the return for each share to be higher.
Application:
Earnings per Share serve as an indicator of a company s profitability. The EPS increased 325 cents
from 773 cents in 2013 to 1098 cents in 2014. The company s profitability increased by 42% in 2014,
which is a great improvement from 2013. Profits increased from R3 514 100 000 in 2013 to R5 005
500 000 in 2014, and this played a big role in causing the EPS to increase by 42%. The shareholders
of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd should be satisfied as the current year (2014) EPS was higher than
usual, and a higher earnings per share ratio often makes the stock price of a company rise.

due to criticism of the Congressional caucus that took place to choose the party s nominee, there were
six candidates for president. Then, when the election took place, no candidate got the majority of the
electoral votes so, the House of Representatives decided on the President. The drama did not end with

Examples Of Figurative Language In Catcher In The Rye
What is the author s style? In this case, Salinger s style is based on the many topics of literature,
including the three basic elements, which are diction, syntax and figurative language. The Catcher In
The Rye is a very eye catching book that talks about a young man named Holden, who got expelled
from his school, Pencey Prep. Salinger speaks through the eyes of Holden Caulfield. His style is
portrayed by showing the distinctive way he uses language compared to other authors.
In this novel, Salinger shows the diction mainly during the dialogues between the characters. The
diction of The Catcher In The Rye is informal due to the different types of colloquial used throughout
the story. An example of this colloquial diction in the book was when Stradlater told Holden to hurry
up in this way, Why don tcha? I will, in minute time. (Stradlater, p.32) We can see that Stradlater uses
a type of slang language as in don tcha. This shows the diction of the story and how it gives us a feel
for what Salinger was trying to do to catch the reader s attention.
This novel also shows us many examples of imagery and symbolism. Imagery gives us a picture of
what is happening in that scene of the story. Imagery gives the reader a realistic look of it. Symbolism
just shows an object or something in that book that represents something special to one of the
characters or even the author. These both can affect the author s style by setting the mood of the story.
In this novel, there was an

Performance Parts Affecting Automotive Engines
What we will be discussing The topic of my research paper is how performance parts affect an
automotive engine. I will be outlining how these different modifications to your car can dramatically
affect your vehicle. Why I am interested I have always been fascinated by fast cars. As I grew older I
realized you didn t have to drop $100,000 on a Sports car to make a car fast. Most of the following
modifications can be placed on any car. Everything from a Corolla to a Corvette. How an engine
works An automotive engine extracts work from its chemical fuel by burning that fuel inside its
cylinders and making the resulting burned gas do work on the engine. Most engines have at least four
cylinders, each of which requires four strokes of the piston to extract work from the fuel. During the
induction stroke, a piston moves out of the cylinder and the fuel and air enter it. During the
compression stroke, the piston moves into the cylinder, compressing this fuel air mixture to high
density, pressure and temperature. An electric spark then ignites the mixture and converts it into
extremely hot burned gas. During the power stroke, the piston again moves out of the cylinder while
the hot gas does work on it. This work is what powers the car. Finally, during the exhaust stroke, the
piston moves into the cylinder and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Combustion happens by mixing fuel and air in the combustion chamber or cylinder. Engines operate
by burning the fuel which then pushes the pistons down. If you want more power you need to burn
more fuel so it will push the pistons down with more force. But it is impossible to burn this extra fuel
without extra oxygen. Nitrous allows the engine to burn more fuel than it could burn normally. It
releases a compressed form of liquid oxygen which allows more fuel to be burned over a short period
of time. Nitrous allows you to burn fuel faster, so if no extra fuel is added the resulting effect is that
you will have no gain in

Essay On Death Of Romeo And Juliet
The tragic play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare during the late 1500 s. The play
was originally born in England and finally published in 1597. The tragic play takes place in the
beautiful Italian cities of Verona and Mantua. Two high born families, the Capulets and Montagues,
and entangled in a spiteful feud. This resentful feud will result in the tragic death of two young lovers
Romeo and Juliet. Romeo who is from the Montague family and Juliet who is from the Capulet family
will fall in love with each other, and keep their love a secret. The aggrieved family feud will be the
one to blame for the early death of Romeo and Juliet. The hatred the two families had for one another
is what caused the unfortunate death of Romeo and Juliet. To hate and to hold onto anger is like
drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer. The hate the two families had for each other
was toxic. Hatred is something that can destroy so much, and the hatred between the rivaling families
is what executed Romeo and Juliet. Forcing Romeo and Juliet to keep their love in the dark, pushed
the young lovers over the edge. That hatred was portrayed when Tybalt, a Capulet, said What. Drawn
and talk of peace? I hate the word as i hate hell. All Montagues. And thee . This statement allows the
readers to fully understand that there is no room for peace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Confucius s Influence On Chinese Philosophy
Confucius, also referred to his Chinese name, Kongzi, is credited for paving a path for the beginning
of Chinese philosophy and is arguably the most famous Chinese philosopher in history. Confucius
believed in the process of self cultivation to become a better, more Good of a person, the idea of
treating your family with the highest respect, also known as filial piety, and keeping traditions alive
with many rituals. Although Confucius has had an immense influence on Chinese philosophy and is
even seen as a present day reference for philosophers all over the world, the Chinese philosopher Mozi
was also an influential figure after the death of Confucius. Mohism is evidently more of an excelling
school of thought to prevent extreme crime in a dystopian Chinese society rather than Confucianism
because there is much emphasis on a strong hierarchy system and acknowledgement of the lower class
under Mohism which is crucial for a society filled with much crime. On the other hand, Confucianism
believes heavily in rituals and traditions which may devalue the state of the theoretical unstable
Chinese society and may be even the cause of the crimes within it. Confucius advocated strongly for
the use of rituals to continue traditional beliefs. He said that a reliable person is someone who is
broadly learned with regard to culture, and whose conduct is restrained by the rites and would surely
not go astray. 1 Traditional beliefs are vital for finding yourself as a person and

Switchback Changed My Life-Personal Narrative
As we were loading up to leave for Switchback Raceway on February 8th, 2015, I was under the

And Then There Were None Murder Mystery
Agatha Christie s novel, And Then There Were None, is widely considered to be a murder mystery.
Although I agree with the genre of the novel, many people oppose that it s a murder mystery. Despite
the fact that the novel clarifies who the murderer is in the epilogue, the murderer is a mystery
throughout the course of the book. Agatha Christie s novel is a murder mystery because the murderer
is unknown, the novel includes mysterious deaths, and there is a crime to be solved.
The murderer in And Then There Were none is unknown, which is a crucial aspect of a murder
mystery. The visitors called this unknown murderer the unknown soldier, (Christie 96) because he was
one of the ten visitors. Even though I suspected who the killer was out of the ten characters there, I
always turned out to be wrong. After a lot of the guests started dying, the rest of them realized that
they were being murdered indirectly to amuse the killer. When Anthony, the first guest, died Dr.
Armstrong came to the conclusion that his death wasn t what we call a natural death, (Christie 64) but
was instead poisoned with potassium cyanide. This shows that the murderer was quick, precise, and
wanted to remain a mystery. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. Discuss the Impact of the Automobile’s Rise on Urban Form... Discuss the impact of the automobile s rise on urban form during the twentieth century and critically evaluate planning measures used to limit the negative social and environmental aspects Since the rise of the automobile, there have been many dramatic changes to urban form in attempts to accommodate this new mode of transport. Focusing on America and Britain, this discussion considers influences on all scales ranging from reclassification of physical roads to the decentralization of urban cores. The rising social and environmental concerns caused by the increase in vehicle usage include pedestrian safety, residential livability, and environmental deterioration. I have decided to explore this question by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lippincott suggested the widening of existing streets and new diagonal arteries dedicated only to traffic , these plans alone would cut across the existing urban fabric dramatically (see figure 1). Eventually, the study led to formations of Major Street Traffic Plans, written by Olmsted, Bartholomew and Cheney from 1929. When implemented, the plans altered urban form in American cities with new openings, extensions and street patterns to reduce barriers to traffic (Roth, 2007). Figure 1. Proposed Plans for Downtown, Los Angeles (Traffic Commission of City and County of Los Angeles, 1924) To an extent, the Major Street Plans and motorways were planning measures to limit social and environmental externalities. Separating pedestrian, streetcar, and auto traffic enhanced the form of urban areas and provided an efficient, coordinated street system, for example improved traffic crossings ensured maximum pedestrian safety (Brown, 2006). With the separation of mobility and access, crossings and passageways secured pedestrian safety in high traffic areas. However, with cities serving as places of innovation and creative hubs of the economy , it is assumed that the mass population would favour proximity to central business districts (Jacobs, 1961). Considering a lower population residing in outskirt regions and motorway infrastructures encircling cities, consequently, the separation of pedestrian and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Social Expectations In Lord Of The Flies People are used to living in an orderly, civilized society with many different social expectations and structures. A dependency is built on this civil life, and people find it difficult to live their lives without rules and order. The children in William Golding s Lord of the Flies come from a life like this, from school in England. When this orderly life, full of expectations and civility, is taken away from them, they are forced to adapt and reach for their most basic human instincts. They attempt to maintain a grip on societal structures but eventually slip into a violent fight for survival. As the earliest of humans did, the boys live without society or civilization shaping their behavior. The deepest instincts of humans are based on those behaviors developed and utilized by the earliest of humans. When societal structure and social expectations are stripped away, humans will revert to their deepest and most primal instincts. People will often conform to social norms, but they will stop when they are no longer expected to. It is easy for people to just follow what everybody else is doing and what they are expected to do; this is what society is built on and how civilization stays intact. According to a 2011 Stanford University philosophy article: We prefer to comply with the norm on the basis of having certain expectation (Bicchieri Muldoon). This indicates that when there are no longer any expectations to follow, people will not maintain the behaviors previously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Mass Extermination Research Paper What can the human race do to ensure that another mass extermination never happens again? That depends the human race being united to fight it. All cultures have distinguished people into categories of us and them : ethnicity, race, religion, nationality. We don t see ourselves as one people, but as multiple peoples defending ourselves against others. We don t see other races as human beings, either. Because we grow up and live apart from other cultures and languages, we see other human beings unlike us as peculiar to ourselves dehumanizing them. We create imaginary borders around our own kind and shut out other groups. If we, as one human race, overcame these boundaries, then the extermination of large groups of people would cease. • 7. Essay on Adultery Explored in The Scarlet Letter That Nathaniel Hawthorne to chose such a controversial topic as adultery for The Scarlet Letter, his nineteenth century novel of seventeenth century sexual repression and hypocrisy (Zabarenko PG), demonstrates a delicate yet changing climate with regard to infidelity. Historically, carrying on an adulterous affair back in such an era of Puritanism and traditional values was not taken lightly; in fact, by today s standards, such horrific treatment for what is now considered an everyday occurrence was more harsh than murders suffer by current standards. Those who acted out of the vows of matrimony centuries ago, as Hester Prynne did in The Scarlet Letter, paid a high price for their momentary pleasures of the flesh. In those days, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In truth, they had little patience for much display of immorality at all, which ultimately became misinterpreted as a complete and total abhorrence to sexuality of any kind. This was not true, however, yet their strict moral code did not bode well with outsiders, making them appear ultra conservative. What is clear within the context of historical consideration is the emphasis placed upon judgement. To determine what is right for one yet not for another; to cast one s opinion over the entire populace as a painter might broadly stroke a blank canvass; to conclude that a person is wrong by the very act he commits behind closed doors, is to be harshly and unfairly judgmental. Small town mentality is wracked with judgement. There is no escaping its suffocating presence. Historically, communities were one entity where the private business of everyone was worn much like the Scarlet Letter itself: out in the open for everyone to know. There was no sense of privacy within a world of snoops and busy bodies. Had there been even the slightest reprieve from such intrusions upon one s intimacy, it very well may be that Prynne s shameful act of adultery would have been judged by the one entity permitted to draw such a conclusion: God. One of the most saddening aspects of The Scarlet Letter is its historically paralyzing approach when dealing with Prynne s extramarital affair. It was clear that she and Dimmesdale were in ... • 8. The Cycle Of Fear In Monsters Are Due On Maple Street Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom. (Bertrand Russell). It is our fear that we must conquer, and none other than The Twilight Zone shows such examples. The Twilight Zone is a television show from the 1960s that is made up of short stories in which an anomalous portal affects situations, giving a pessimistic outlook on humanity as a species, especially on human nature. In the story, Monsters are Due on Maple Street , the anomalies (aliens) create a series of events that make people have suspicious thoughts, and the cycle of malicious thoughts lead to people scapegoating each other, and eventually killing each other, finishing their job for them. We (humanity) are the monsters. Humanity s thoughts are one of it s most deadliest weapons. For example, A last example of thoughts is when Tommy began speak of about aliens. Tommy s thoughts kick off the entire event that makes everyone kill each other. Not only that, but his fantasy world made Pete van Horn die. (It s the monster!). A second example would be on page 7, when it says Charlie: He was an oddball. Him and his whole family. Real oddball, (Serling, pg. 7). Even though he probably thought that the Goodmans weren t that special, he thinks that someone is an alien, and that impairs his ability to think rationally. • 9. The Breath Of Other People Killed Them Throughout the eighteenth century great strides were being made in the medical field regarding the understanding of disease, biology, and public health. With the contributions of scientists, doctors, and researchers the overall health of the ever growing population in the eighteenth century began to improve dramatically. One of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine occurred in the late eighteenth with the discovery of Louis Pasteur and his experiments regarding the growth of bacteria and their ability to travel from place to place. After countless years of research and analyzation, Pasteur used his findings to develop pasteurization (Haigh). Pasteurization is a process which involves heating certain liquids to kill bacteria and prevent fermentation. Pasteur also developed an anthrax vaccine along with a way to weaken the effects of the rabies virus. Using the work of Pasteur another scientist by the name of Joseph Lister developed antisepsis, a way of killing disease causing germs. In 1865 before an operation, Lister cleaned a leg wound with carbolic acid and performed the surgical procedure with heated instruments, heating the instruments sterilized them (Gieson). The patient in question would have needed an amputation if it was not for Lister sterilizing medical instruments and the surgical field. Eventually, Lister incorporated the use of sterilization in all of his surgical procedures, decreasing the amount of postoperative mortality. The use of antiseptics did not just reduce postoperative mortality it also helped out in the treatment of wounds and making childbirth a less risky process for both women and their children. It s important to know what happened and remember the outcomes in our hearts, then put it to rest. Why keep it alive and let the wounds keep on burning? Showing, and talking about it, keeps it alive and as such, is an inspiration for the weak minds. We saw and heard the mimicking of those saddening episodes multiplying, instead than diminishing, not to mention the special interest that lies behind the feeding of the pain, orchestrated for the money that such recurrence can generate. What can be targeted as a negative impact shouldn t be kept alive, but replaced with a positive, for a positive inspiration as a simple and healthy equation. They say we have to remember the negative that was done. I say: I rather forget it, remembering a happy positive one, makes me feel better. What we are projecting with our minds, is what we get, the option selected and what derives out of it, is rightfully ours. We are wasting so much time, we are falling short in the progress of formulating a better world. The reasons for such a delay, is due to the politicians trapped in their contorted games played under the financial kingdom rules and the shortsightedness of their thousand dollar suit soldiers ruled by their unconscious fears. At the beginning of Animal Farm , power was used to achieve great things. It brought all animals of Manor Farm together but after an initial influence of power, it began to destroy the community that they had worked together to form. This can be seen by the character development of Napoleon who is thought to potray Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union during the mid 1920 s. They were both leaders that abused their power and used ruthless methods to rule over the community. For instance, Napoleon and Stalin both abused their given power, one of the similarities between them was their act of violence. In the novella, Animal Farm by George orwell, ... The Catcher In The Rye is a very eye catching book that talks about a young man named Holden, who got expelled from his school, Pencey Prep. Salinger speaks through the eyes of Holden Caulfield. His style is portrayed by showing the distinctive way he uses language compared to other authors. In this novel, Salinger shows the diction mainly during the dialogues between the characters. The diction of The Catcher In The Rye is informal due to the different types of colloquial used throughout the story. An example of this colloquial diction in the book was when Stradlater told Holden to hurry up in this way, Why don tcha? I will, in minute time. (Stradlater, p.32) We can see that Stradlater uses a type of slang language as in don tcha. This shows the diction of the story and how it gives us a feel for what Salinger was trying to do to catch the reader s attention. This novel also shows us many examples of imagery and symbolism. Imagery gives us a picture of what is happening in that scene of the story. Imagery gives the reader a realistic look of it. Symbolism just shows an object or something in that book that represents something special to one of the characters or even the author. These both can affect the author s style by setting the mood of the story. In this novel, there was an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Performance Parts Affecting Automotive Engines What we will be discussing The topic of my research paper is how performance parts affect an automotive engine. I will be outlining how these different modifications to your car can dramatically affect your vehicle. Why I am interested I have always been fascinated by fast cars. As I grew older I realized you didn t have to drop $100,000 on a Sports car to make a car fast. Most of the following modifications can be placed on any car. Everything from a Corolla to a Corvette. How an engine works An automotive engine extracts work from its chemical fuel by burning that fuel inside its cylinders and making the resulting burned gas do work on the engine. Most engines have at least four cylinders, each of which requires four strokes of the piston to extract work from the fuel. During the induction stroke, a piston moves out of the cylinder and the fuel and air enter it. During the compression stroke, the piston moves into the cylinder, compressing this fuel air mixture to high density, pressure and temperature. An electric spark then ignites the mixture and converts it into extremely hot burned gas. During the power stroke, the piston again moves out of the cylinder while the hot gas does work on it. This work is what powers the car. Finally, during the exhaust stroke, the piston moves into the cylinder and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Combustion happens by mixing fuel and air in the combustion chamber or cylinder. Engines operate by burning the fuel which then pushes the pistons down. If you want more power you need to burn more fuel so it will push the pistons down with more force. But it is impossible to burn this extra fuel without extra oxygen. Nitrous allows the engine to burn more fuel than it could burn normally. It releases a compressed form of liquid oxygen which allows more fuel to be burned over a short period of time. Nitrous allows you to burn fuel faster, so if no extra fuel is added the resulting effect is that you will have no gain in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Essay On Death Of Romeo And Juliet The tragic play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare during the late 1500 s. The play was originally born in England and finally published in 1597. The tragic play takes place in the beautiful Italian cities of Verona and Mantua. Two high born families, the Capulets and Montagues, and entangled in a spiteful feud. This resentful feud will result in the tragic death of two young lovers Romeo and Juliet. Romeo who is from the Montague family and Juliet who is from the Capulet family will fall in love with each other, and keep their love a secret. The aggrieved family feud will be the one to blame for the early death of Romeo and Juliet. The hatred the two families had for one another is what caused the unfortunate death of Romeo and Juliet. To hate and to hold onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer. The hate the two families had for each other was toxic. Hatred is something that can destroy so much, and the hatred between the rivaling families is what executed Romeo and Juliet. Forcing Romeo and Juliet to keep their love in the dark, pushed the young lovers over the edge. That hatred was portrayed when Tybalt, a Capulet, said What. Drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as i hate hell. All Montagues. And thee . This statement allows the readers to fully understand that there is no room for peace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 33. Confucius s Influence On Chinese Philosophy Confucius, also referred to his Chinese name, Kongzi, is credited for paving a path for the beginning of Chinese philosophy and is arguably the most famous Chinese philosopher in history. Confucius believed in the process of self cultivation to become a better, more Good of a person, the idea of treating your family with the highest respect, also known as filial piety, and keeping traditions alive with many rituals. Although Confucius has had an immense influence on Chinese philosophy and is even seen as a present day reference for philosophers all over the world, the Chinese philosopher Mozi was also an influential figure after the death of Confucius. Mohism is evidently more of an excelling school of thought to prevent extreme crime in a dystopian Chinese society rather than Confucianism because there is much emphasis on a strong hierarchy system and acknowledgement of the lower class under Mohism which is crucial for a society filled with much crime. On the other hand, Confucianism believes heavily in rituals and traditions which may devalue the state of the theoretical unstable Chinese society and may be even the cause of the crimes within it. Confucius advocated strongly for the use of rituals to continue traditional beliefs. He said that a reliable person is someone who is broadly learned with regard to culture, and whose conduct is restrained by the rites and would surely not go astray. 1 Traditional beliefs are vital for finding yourself as a person and ... • 37. Switchback Changed My Life-Personal Narrative As we were loading up to leave for Switchback Raceway on February 8th, 2015, I was under the impression that it was just going to be another typical day dedicated to dirtbikes. Little did I know that I would be waiting by my boyfriend s bedside for the next 8 days at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. I ve always admired Hank, he stole my heart from the start with his shy yet bold personality. But, after watching him endure a potentially life threatening injury, he s more than just admirable; he s one of the strongest people I know and I will be forever grateful for having him in my life. After watching him hit the ground after losing control of his dirt bike from 25ft in the air, I sprinted over to him and when I got there he was looking up to me smiling, hi, babe he said. • 38. And Then There Were None Murder Mystery Agatha Christie s novel, And Then There Were None, is widely considered to be a murder mystery. Although I agree with the genre of the novel, many people oppose that it s a murder mystery. Despite the fact that the novel clarifies who the murderer is in the epilogue, the murderer is a mystery throughout the course of the book. Agatha Christie s novel is a murder mystery because the murderer is unknown, the novel includes mysterious deaths, and there is a crime to be solved. The murderer in And Then There Were none is unknown, which is a crucial aspect of a murder mystery. The visitors called this unknown murderer the unknown soldier, (Christie 96) because he was one of the ten visitors. Even though I suspected who the killer was out of the ten characters there, I always turned out to be wrong. After a lot of the guests started dying, the rest of them realized that they were being murdered indirectly to amuse the killer. When Anthony, the first guest, died Dr. Armstrong came to the conclusion that his death wasn t what we call a natural death, (Christie 64) but was instead poisoned with potassium cyanide. This shows that the murderer was quick, precise, and wanted to remain a mystery. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
