5. What is Crisis?
• “Oxford Dictionary”- A time of intense difficulty or danger.
• Crisis is a state of disequilibrium resulting from the
interaction of an event with the individual’s or family
coping mechanisms, which are inadequate to meet the
demands of the situation, combined with the individual’s or
family perception of the meaning of the event.

10. CRISIS INTERVENTION
• Crisis intervention is an immediate and short-term psychological
care aimed at assisting individuals in a crisis situation to restore
equilibrium to their biopsychosocial functioning and to minimize the
potential for long-term psychological trauma.

11. TECHNIQUES OF CRISIS
INTERVENTION
• CATHARSIS – Emotional ventilation of feelings.
• CLARRIFICATION – Encouraging the patient to express more clearly.
• SUGGESTION – Influencing a person to accept an idea or belief.
• REINFORCEMENT – Awarding the positive behaviour of the patient.
• SUPPORT OF DEFENSES – Encouraging the healthy, adaptive defences.
• RISING OF SELF – ESTEEM – Helping the patient to regain feelings of self
– worth.
• EXPOLARATION OF SOLUTIONS – Examining the alternative ways of
solving the problems.
