Creating My Poster and Magazine Cover
- 2. 1. Finding the right picture ■ The first thing I had to do was envision about my poster and what I wanted it to look like. My first idea was to use an hourglass (a still from our trailer) and use that as the main image, I then decided I didn’t like this and I felt it did not represent my film so I decided I would use the main character for the main image instead.The first thing I did was take a few different images of the main character (as I knew that was what I wanted) and I looked at them and decided which one would be best for my film poster. I knew I wanted the poster to completely focus on character but I had to choose the one which I felt would be most effective. This was the image I originally planned to use. After many choices, this was the final image I used for my poster.
- 3. 2. Deciding what effect I would use ■ I tested out many different effects and filters on the main image before coming up with my final idea. ■ At first, I blurred out the background so that the only thing that would be clear is the image of the main character to show her importance. ■ After looking at the poster and receiving my audience feedback, I decided to change the background so that it had a twirl effect to suggest time travelling and this idea seemed to work better.
- 4. 3. Adding text to my poster ■ The first thing I added onto the poster was the tagline.The tagline did not really change that much as I liked the font that I originally chose but to do this I had to click the text tool and then chose the font ‘Harlow Solid Italic’. I then highlighted the word ‘never’ originally and changed the colour to red using the colour tool but I then decided I didn’t like the word in red so I changed it back to the original colour which was white. ■ I then added my billing block onto the film poster and put that near the bottom.This was created using the text tool and I simply chose the font I wanted and then I typed in the billing block which I had already planned. ■ After this, I added the film title onto the poster in the centre along with the words underneath which showed what R3 actually stood for. Underneath the billing block, I then added the release date and website for the movie and made it the colour grey (same colour as film title) using the colour picker tool (eyedropper tool).

Finding the right picture ■ Similarly to the poster, I had to find the right image for my magazine cover and I wanted this to be different to the film poster as I felt it would be more effective if the magazine cover’s main image was different. ■ For my magazine cover, after taking many pictures of my main character, I quickly decided on one main image and I stuck with my choice the whole way through.

Deciding what would go on my magazine cover ■ After looking at the conventions of film magazine cover, I had to decide what cover lines would feature on my poster. ■ I also had to decide the name of the magazine cover as well as the colour scheme that I would use.After a long process of designing the masthead, I decided to use ‘HOLT FILM’ and make the colour of that purple. ■ I then decided as the masthead was purple that I would use purple in the colour scheme and I decided that yellow and white went with purple very well. I also had to include the things that appear on all magazine covers such as bar code, price and date. ■ At first, I wasn’t sure whether to put ‘win a prize’ but after hearing my audience feedback, I decided to add it in and this made the magazine cover look more professional.

Adding text and other images onto my magazine cover ■ I added a lot of text onto my magazine cover as magazine covers feature a lot of text whether it’s to promote the film or advertise others. I also included an image of the film’s main title and I added reviews onto the magazine cover using 3 words that began with ‘R’ to go with the film title and I also used stars to show the ratings that the magazine cover had given the film. ■ I also made a bar code on MicrosoftWord and then copied and pasted it onto Photoshop to get it onto my magazine cover to make it look more professional. ■ I used the shapes tool to create the rectangle which went behind ‘WORLD EXCLUSIVE’ and the circle that went behind the advertisement to win a free prize. I also changed the colour of the shapes to purple to fit in with the colour scheme.
