2. • On the film poster that my group and I have created the title kind of helps/hints to
explain what the overall storyline of the film is about. ‘Invisible’ links/connects to
the character on the film poster, which shows the audience the plot of the film. This
is a common convention that most films tend to do and they do it by using the title.
As this usually has a link to the film and helps to give an idea to what the film may
be about.
• Keep the title short is another common convention as it is easier to remember than
having long names. Other established films which have done is ‘Titanic’, ‘Serna’
‘Avatar’ etc.
• Also looking at established film posters pretty much all the ones that I looked at
place the title at the bottom of the page but central of the poster and this is so that
the audience can have a better look on the image that is being shown.
3. • From our research of the short film my group and I realised that certain aspects of our short
film would need to relate to other established short films. As part of our research we noted
down what particular camera angles, mis-en-scene, editing and sound most of them use and
from the research we could take into account and try to show that in our short film.
• The title is placed in the centre but at the
bottom of the poster. From looking at
established film poster we took this into
consideration and placed our title in the
same position as we were wanting to
follow the codes + conventions of drama
genre films.
• Looking at the image on the right which is
an established film poster. My group and I
placed the names of the actors within the
film at the top of the poster. Although on
the ‘Orphan’ poster they have not done
this but we thought it would be a good
idea to include these as then the audience
will know who will be starring in the short
film.
• We have placed the release date just
under the title but in a much smaller font
size just like the one on the right. This is
because the audience will know when the
film is out if they want to go see the film.
Having it in a smaller font wont take the
attention away from the title.
• Also we included the production
company’s logo and website which
includes further details about the short
film. This is placed right at the bottom of
the poster in a much smaller font size
than the release date, this is so that it is
noticeable to the audience but not so
much that they get distracted by it.
4. • Looking at the established magazine
review on the right. I have used a
larger image which takes up a
quarter of the page with two smaller
images underneath. These images
are snapshot taken from the film and
shows them what will be seen within
the film.
• Just before the review starts there is
a text box which includes
information about the film such as
the certificate, running time and the
plot of the film. This is to show that
the audience more about the film
and I have also included this on my
review in the same position. The
reason why I did this is so the
audience of mine and my groups film
will know a bit more about our film.
• I have placed the film title at the top
of the page so the audience know
which film has been reviewed.
• I have used the basic column style
which is used in every magazine. The
reason for this is so that it makes the
review actually look like it is apart of
a magazine also as it gives it a more
professional look.
• The last thing on the established
magazine review is a verdict of what
the writer’s opinion is of the review
and also gave the film a star rating.
However, on our magazine review
we chose not to give a verdict has we
felt giving the film a star rating would
be enough as we have already given
our opinion within the review.
5. • For our main product my group and I chose to do a short film and the ancillary texts
that go with it are creating a film poster to go with the short film also a magazine
review about the film.
• While researching we looked at the codes + conventions of rom-com as this is the
genre that we chose to base our short film on however, during the process we
changed the genre to drama. The reason we did this is because as we were creating
a script to base our film on it seemed to have more elements for a drama genre
rather than a rom-com. Therefore, we then had to start looking at the codes +
conventions for drama and the reason why we researched the codes + conventions is
because we wanted to find out the technique selling point of already established
films so we could link it back to our short film.
6. • During the researching and planning stages of our products my group and I
annotated 3x of established short films, film posters and magazine reviews
about the film.
• From this we found out that the film posters are used to advertise the film
through the details on the poster which are the title, image used, font, colour
etc. These elements would be shown throughout the three products as it
makes the poster more sellable, attractive and connected with the ancillary
texts.
• If the audince look at the film poster they will know who the main actor of the
film is, the title and also gives them hint of something big that may happen in
the film by the prop that is used. By looking at the review of the film the
audince would get to know the storyline and the best and worst parts of the
film. Also the images used within the review are snapshots taken form the
actual short film and this would give the audience an idea what will be
included in the film.
7. • Firstly, the main prop that was used in the short film we also included on our poster
i.e. the lighter. This shows the drama side of the storyline liking back to the film.
This is important because if both the film and poster used completely different
props it would confuse the audience of what genre the film is. However, with the
magazine review we didn’t show much of the props as the poster gives enough
details to the audience already. So for this we used snapshots from the film which
shows the audience a bit about the film such as who the actors are in it, the
locations used and also what costumes that have been worn.
• The costume of the main character are shown in the main product and the ancillary
texts and this is the black hoody which we have aimed to make iconic for our short
film. By showing this in both the main product and the ancillary texts, we have
made the film, poster and the magazine review link together well. This was a key
thing as we wanted the audience to think of the character when they see the black
hoody as it only worn by the main character.
• Lastly, the main character himself was a big element that we included main product
and the ancillary texts. The character give the ancillary texts and the film poster
meaning and the character helps to link these three together as they are portrayed
in each.
8. • We uploaded our film onto ‘YouTube’. This was so we could get feedback from our
audience and see what they think of our short film.
• Once we uploaded it onto ‘YouTube’, we then shared the link onto ‘Facebook’ and
‘Twitter’. This is we could get a variety of feedback as this would be giving us
feedback from people we know. Whereas from YouTube we get feedback from
people we don’t know so it will being giving us better results from the feedback.
• Some of the feedback was to add in extra scenes because in some parts the film
didn’t connect together. so., we looked at t he film together and realised that the
feedback we were getting was right. Therefore, we filmed a few more scenes to
make the film link together and once we did that we re-uploaded it as our final
product.
• As we added in extra scenes last minute we tried our best to get the actors to wear
the same costumes, hair and make-up as they did on the day we filmed the rest of
the film but as it was last minute some actors were not able to do so.
9. While planning and researching my group and I used various different programmes such as:
10. • When researching for my main product and ancillary texts I mostly used the
Internet to help me by using search engines such as ‘YouTube and ‘Google’. I did this
mostly on the sixth form computers which are ‘Dell’.
• I used Google to help me find established film posters and film magazine reviews.
Using this search engine helped as it showed me many images of what I was
wanting to find and from this it helped me to gather information to help with my
media product.
• Using YouTube helped me a lot through the researching process as from this I could
watch established short films and could take down notes on what I should include
in my short film. Also from looking at the short films I could see the forms and
conventions used throughout them.
11. • Throughout the whole process of creating my media products ‘Blogger’ had a
huge part within it. This is because whatever work was created by me and my
group, it was noted down on Blogger. We used Blogger to keep track of our
progress while working as it was useful because we were able to embed images
and videos to how our research was going and to show where we were getting
our ideas from.
• Another useful thing about using Blogger is that we were able to all of our
planning documents such as our script for the short film and the storyboard
along side it.
• Blogger was mostly used as a diary entry as I was constantly updating it with
mine and my groups ideas and used it to see the progression of our work.
• Microsoft Office had helped me during my project as it was useful and it was
easy to access and use.
• Using Microsoft Word to write up the script for the short film was useful as it
was easier to construct on there. We then printed a copy out each so we could
rehearse and practice the short film
12. • My phone is one of the min products that I've used as I used this to record the whole
of the short film and I also used it to take pictures that have been used on the film
poster and film magazine review. The phone that I have is an iPhone 6. The reason
why we chose to use thee phone is because it was always handy as the phone was
with us wherever we were. So, if we had to film a scene which we forgot to add in or
needed to add more scenes the phone was always there so we could easily record it.
Using the phone made it slightly more images to take snapshots while film as it gave
you the option to take picture whilst you are filming. This was very useful as this
allow us to use these images for our magazine review.
• We imported the film clips onto our MacBook Pro to allow us to edit our film on a
software called iMovie and to make our film as a whole.
13. • iMovie is one of the top software's that many use to create videos or even vlogs
therefore we chose to use this software. Using this software was easy although it
took a long process uploading all the film clips onto the software. However, once
that was done it was quick and easy to place it altogether. As we did this we added
editing transitions to fit in when it’s a new scene.
• Using the phone made it quite easy to create some of the editing techniques such
as panning as it was hand-held filming so it was easy to create this effect.
• We used both Photoshop and Fireworks to edit our images that we used for our
ancillary texts. We used these to easy they were easy to use and we already had
knowledge from using these software's from our AS Level media.
• For the images used on the magazine review, we didn’t really need to edit as much
as we thought as they were snapshots from the film. All we need to do were
slightly tweak a few things such as increasing the brightness making the images
stand out more and look clearer.
• For the film poster we used a gradient tool on the background to make the title
stand out more as we had added an outer glow to it making the audiences eyes
draw to it making it the first thing that they see. We then added text on the image
which were the two main actors names and the release date, we made the actor on
the poster slightly blurred and made the lighter brighter making it the main focus
on the poster as this would give he audience a small clue what the short film could
be about. Underneath the masthead we added the production company’s logo and
website for details about the film as this would make it look more professional.
14. • This is how we constructed our film. We
uploaded all the film clips onto ‘iMovie’, from
there we were able to move clips around to
make sure they flow in the correct order. Once
we had put it all together we were then able to
edit it and add in non-diegetic sounds.
This is a list of all the clips that
were needed to be added into
our film.
This section allowed us to upload any
music we wanted such as the intro
music or any backing track.
This screen is where our film plays, so as we
are editing the film and putting it all together
we can see in that small screen as we go
along.
This section is for editing. So once we had put all of
the film together. We went onto this section which
allowed us to add in transitions such as fading once
scene to another.
This section is the timeline and
this is where we put all of the
film together as one.
