Categories of Antonyms
 Antonyms are broadly divided into two:
1. Graded Antonyms: This expresses
relationship that can be graded from one
extremes to another. E.g – Intelligent – Stupid.
One can be intelligent, average or stupid.
Therefore between intelligent and stupid, other
levels of the relationship can be expressed.
2. Complementary Antonyms: Represent the
only two opposite possibilities and there is no
middle ground or scale involved between the
two words. E.g True – False. A statement can
either be true or false.
 Relational Antonyms
 Relational antonyms are considered a
subcategory of complementary antonyms.
 In this type of antonyms, the two opposites
must exist. By mentioning one it means the
other must exist. E.g, if there is a husband
there must be a wife.
