Antonyms are words that are opposite in
meaning to the word in consideration.
Two words are ‘antonyms’ when they have
opposite meanings
Some words can have more than one
antonym, depending on the context in which
the same word is used.

7. Categories of Antonyms
Antonyms are broadly divided into two:
1. Graded Antonyms: This expresses
relationship that can be graded from one
extremes to another. E.g – Intelligent – Stupid.
One can be intelligent, average or stupid.
Therefore between intelligent and stupid, other
levels of the relationship can be expressed.
2. Complementary Antonyms: Represent the
only two opposite possibilities and there is no
middle ground or scale involved between the
two words. E.g True – False. A statement can
either be true or false.
8. Relational Antonyms
Relational antonyms are considered a
subcategory of complementary antonyms.
In this type of antonyms, the two opposites
must exist. By mentioning one it means the
other must exist. E.g, if there is a husband
there must be a wife.

Employer = employee
prey = predator
