BACHELOR OF EDUCATION – 2ND YEAR
Course Title : Guidance and Couselling
Topic : Concept of Self discovery,
Decision making and Problem solving
SELF DISCOVERY
The practice of self awareness/ self
discovery is one of the greatest skills in
life because it enables you to learn about
yourself in a way no one else can even
teach you. It shows you how to design
your lifestyle on your own terms.
Awareness means what we notice in life.
It is about paying attention. It is the
details you pick up from your perception
of the world. It is your consciousness
actively gathering and processing
information from your environment. It is
the way in which we experience life.
CONCEPT OF SELF
DISCOVERY
• Awareness is noticing the world, whereas self-awareness is focusing your
awareness on yourself. It is the ability to notice your own.
• Physical sensations
• Reactions
• Habits
• Behavior
• Thoughts
• Intuitions
• Needs
• Desires
Self awareness is about focusing
upon the reality of our own
behaviors, and not telling
ourselves a story about
ourselves. Sometimes people
feel dissatisfied or unhappy, but
have no idea why, because they
cannot locate any immediate
reason for it. They begin to feel
distracted or feel tingling in chest
or stomach. Investigating the
source of these unexplained
feelings is a practice of self
awareness.
REASONS TO DEVELOP SELF
AWARENESS
• Having self-awareness creates the opportunity to make changes in behavior and beliefs.
• The more you know about your own habits, the easier it is to improve those habits.
• Changing the interpretations, it becomes easier to change the emotions.
• Self awareness is one of the attributes of emotional intelligence, and an important factor
in achieving success.
STEPS IN DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AWARENESS
BY STEPHEN WARLEY
• STEP 1 To practice self awareness gain
greater awareness of your emotions.
• STEP 2 To practice self awareness make a
habit of tracking your feelings.
• STEP 3 To practice self awareness expand
your practice to area of your life beyond
your feelings.
DECISION MAKING
Decision making is an important skill for
life especially in the business area. It is
especially important for management
and leadership. Problem solving and
decision making are closely linked and
each requires creatively in the
identification of options, their selection
and development. Problem solving
often involves decision making.
“In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best
thing you can do is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”
-Theodore Roosevelt
DECISION MAKING SKILLS
REQUIRES A MIXTURE OF
SKILLS AS:
(i) Creativity development and
identification of options.
(ii) Clarity of judgement.
(iii) Firmness of decision
(iv) Effective implementation
DECISION MAKING PROCESS
(i) Define the problem or issue. Decide whether it
requires any action. Decide whether action
needed is urgent or can delayed.
(ii) Understand all the causes of the problem by
gathering all facts related to it
(iii) List all possible solutions.
(iv) Write the pros and cons of each possible
solutions. Consult others about this if
required.
(v) Select the best solution
(vi) Implement it properly and effectively. If
required, explain the reason for your action to
those who are influenced by it. Whatever you
do, try to be as objective as possible.
PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
What is problem? In education the common meaning is a question
raised for inquiry, consideration or solution. In life when we say we face
a problem we generally mean an unpleasant situation or difficulty. When
we talk about everyday life a problem is any situation where
improvement is required and a state is desired which is different from
the existing current state. There is a feeling of doubt, hesitation, mental
difficulty.
Dewey has rightly claimed that Man begins to think, when he faces
some problem of perplexity in his experiencing, not when he is
comfortable or at ease. Which are the situation in which a person does
not tend to think? We can say that when actions are dictated from above
or decided by others, we tend not to think. When we believe in fatalism
or we have faith in chance or luck, again we will not think in terms of
problem solving approach. Avoidance, withdrawal, anger and
aggression are also solutions or reactions which demonstrate that we
are not having the life skill that is required to solve problems.
PROBLEM SOLVING REQUIRES
QUALITIES SUCH AS
• Cool headedness
• Creativity
• Scientific thinking
• Understanding
• Open mindedness
STEPS IN PROBLEM SOLVING
1. Problem orientation
2. Define the problem in observable,
measurable and objective terms so
that all team members have mutual
understanding of the problem.
3. Analyze the problem to understand
causes of the problem. Attempt
should be to find manageable
causes.
4. Formulate alternative strategies.
5. Selection of strategies.
6. Implementation of strategies.
7. Evaluation

Concept of self discovery, decision making and problem solving

  • 1. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION – 2ND YEAR Course Title : Guidance and Couselling Topic : Concept of Self discovery, Decision making and Problem solving
  • 2. SELF DISCOVERY The practice of self awareness/ self discovery is one of the greatest skills in life because it enables you to learn about yourself in a way no one else can even teach you. It shows you how to design your lifestyle on your own terms. Awareness means what we notice in life. It is about paying attention. It is the details you pick up from your perception of the world. It is your consciousness actively gathering and processing information from your environment. It is the way in which we experience life.
  • 3. CONCEPT OF SELF DISCOVERY • Awareness is noticing the world, whereas self-awareness is focusing your awareness on yourself. It is the ability to notice your own. • Physical sensations • Reactions • Habits • Behavior • Thoughts • Intuitions • Needs • Desires
  • 4. Self awareness is about focusing upon the reality of our own behaviors, and not telling ourselves a story about ourselves. Sometimes people feel dissatisfied or unhappy, but have no idea why, because they cannot locate any immediate reason for it. They begin to feel distracted or feel tingling in chest or stomach. Investigating the source of these unexplained feelings is a practice of self awareness.
  • 5. REASONS TO DEVELOP SELF AWARENESS • Having self-awareness creates the opportunity to make changes in behavior and beliefs. • The more you know about your own habits, the easier it is to improve those habits. • Changing the interpretations, it becomes easier to change the emotions. • Self awareness is one of the attributes of emotional intelligence, and an important factor in achieving success.
  • 6. STEPS IN DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AWARENESS BY STEPHEN WARLEY • STEP 1 To practice self awareness gain greater awareness of your emotions. • STEP 2 To practice self awareness make a habit of tracking your feelings. • STEP 3 To practice self awareness expand your practice to area of your life beyond your feelings.
  • 7. DECISION MAKING Decision making is an important skill for life especially in the business area. It is especially important for management and leadership. Problem solving and decision making are closely linked and each requires creatively in the identification of options, their selection and development. Problem solving often involves decision making.
  • 8. “In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing you can do is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” -Theodore Roosevelt
  • 9. DECISION MAKING SKILLS REQUIRES A MIXTURE OF SKILLS AS: (i) Creativity development and identification of options. (ii) Clarity of judgement. (iii) Firmness of decision (iv) Effective implementation

  • 11. PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS What is problem? In education the common meaning is a question raised for inquiry, consideration or solution. In life when we say we face a problem we generally mean an unpleasant situation or difficulty. When we talk about everyday life a problem is any situation where improvement is required and a state is desired which is different from the existing current state. There is a feeling of doubt, hesitation, mental difficulty. Dewey has rightly claimed that Man begins to think, when he faces some problem of perplexity in his experiencing, not when he is comfortable or at ease. Which are the situation in which a person does not tend to think? We can say that when actions are dictated from above or decided by others, we tend not to think. When we believe in fatalism or we have faith in chance or luck, again we will not think in terms of problem solving approach. Avoidance, withdrawal, anger and aggression are also solutions or reactions which demonstrate that we are not having the life skill that is required to solve problems.
