format a system using XP CD.

          IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
Reformat Your Hard Drive Using a
                        Windows XP
***Warning this might erase all of your data particularly if you did

not partition your hard drive. Back up all your files to a removable

storage, CDs or DVDs or to another hard disk before continuing.

Have your device drivers ready as well as these will be installed

after the reformat. Make sure you have your Windows XP

installation disc with a valid serial key before proceeding. Consult

your computer manufacturer’s manual for more reference.

                            IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 1
Make sure that your computer will boot to CD or DVD drive first. Watch the first screen

during boot, it will usually tell you what to press to access the boot menu. Some BIOS

have different ways on accessing the boot menu. The most common is by pressing F8, or

F12. If this doesn’t work then try F11 and F12. You should see a small screen that says

boot menu. Make sure to select CD ROM or DVD ROM. If you still can’t access the boot

menu using the shortcut key then you’ll have to change the boot order in BIOS itself. If

you’re not so familiar with BIOS then this might be a little bit tricky for you as some BIOS

have different menus and ways on changing the boot order sequence

                                   IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 2
Insert your Windows XP disc into your CD or DVD drive then
restart your computer. You will see on the black screen
“Press any key to boot from cd” press Enter.

                       IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 3
Select the first option “To set up Windows XP now,
press Enter”.

                     IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI

STEP 4
• Press F8 to Agree

            IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 5
• If you have more than one partition, select the drive
where you had previously installed Windows XP. It’s
usually in the drive C. Press Esc to continue

                       IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI

STEP 6

• If you only have one partition listed, then delete the selected partition by

pressing “D”. (This will delete everything in your hard drive so make sure

you have a back up of everything, including drivers and installers). If you

have a second partition for your data files then it may not be necessary to

delete this unless you want to format your wholehard drive and start

    everything new.

                                  IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 7

It will ask you to confirm the deletion by pressing “L”.

               IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 9
You will notice that you have unallocated space, this time you
will create a partition. If you have just one whole big partition
before then it is recommended to create another one this time
for your files or data. This will also serve as a back up for your
files in case you have to format your hard drive again in the
future. Press "C" to create a partition.

                          IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
Now you will be asked to set the size for the new partition.
Create a new size for your system drive (C:) where Windows
XP will be installed and also another partition for your data
files (D:). Note that the size is in MB and is not always exact.
So for example you have 80 GB of hard drive then it may come
out as “76309 MB” in your installation screen. To create the C
partition, just enter 40000 MB (40GB) and the rest will be for
your second partition.

                          IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 10
On this screen you will be asked to format the partition. If you
have an old computer it is best to choose the regular
formatting using the NTFS file system to avoid any errors
during set up, otherwise select quick format using NTFS

                         IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI

STEP 11
Your hard drive is now being formatted. The files will be copied from your CD to
your hard drive, this may take several minutes.

                               IMRAN AHMED FAROOQI
STEP 12
. Your computer will automatically restart, you should leave
the installation disc in your CD or DVD ROM. Do not press
enter when you see this prompt again “Press any key to boot
