Over the last decade, demand for spring management has increased as traditional spring sources have started drying up or becoming contaminated. In response, communities, NGOs and state agencies began dedicated spring protection programmes. In the Himalayas, the State of Sikkim and organizations such as Central Himalayan Action and Research Group (CHIRAG) and People Science Institute (PSI) started identifying and protecting spring recharge areas around 2007. The difference between these programmes and many other previous efforts is that they went beyond supply-side improvements to focus on the use of hydrogeology to map springsheds for targeted interventions.
The Advanced Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (ACWADAM), a research and capacity-building organization comprised of hydrogeologists and other experts began lending their expertise and building capacity of stakeholders. ACWADAM provides technical support, training and materials in hydrogeology to all network partners as well as others in India and the region. Similar programmes began independently in most of the mountain regions of India. Arghyam, a funding organization that was supporting many of these programmes, noticed that these disparate initiatives shared commonalities despite geographic diversity. They thus organized and funded a meeting of these various organizations in June 2014, and the Springs Initiative was born.
The springs initiative aims to tackle the current water crisis and to ensure safe and sustainable access to water for all, by promoting responsible and appropriate management of aquifers, springsheds, and watersheds and conserving ecosystems in partnership with communities, governments and other stakeholders.
This presentation has been developed as a part of the springs initiative to promote an understanding of springs and their role in mountainous areas.

Water is an important natural resource, which forms the cause of all life. Water is
one of the most requisite materials in our day to day life. It is a key resource in all
economic activities ranging from agriculture to industries. Only a minimal fraction of
the planet’s plentiful water is available to the living beings as fresh water. About 97%
is found in the oceans and is very salty for drinking, irrigation, or industry. The
remaining 3% is fresh water. About 2.997% of it is arrested in ice caps or glaciers or
is concealed so deep that it costs too much time & money to extract. Only about
0.0035 of Earth’s total volume of water is easily available to us as soil moisture,
exploitable ground water, water vapor, rivers, lakes and streams. In this present study
by a systematic sampling has been carried out to find the water quality parameters of
the Lake, by collecting samples from Six different positions, which covering entire
area of the lake, and the stations were distributed covering the periphery of the entire
tank, and also considering the inflow and the discharges and to suggest required
management techniques to make water free from the pollution
Environmental Monitoring Model of Health, Parasitological, And Colorimetric C...theijes
The sanitary quality of water was evaluated in two micro basins, Bacaxá and Capivari belonging to the Lakes Basin St. John in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for colimetric and parasitological analysis. Analyses were performed seasonally over a year and the levels of Escherichia coli were within the recommended only in the summer of 2012 and fall, and inappropriate with levels above recommended in winter, spring and summer of 2013 in both the micro basins. Through our observations, we compare the average values of the levels of total coliforms and Escherichia coli between both rivers. Initially, the samples indicate a similarity between the distributions of coliforms and Escherichia coli. However, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test samples indicate that the distributions are different. In parasitological analysis it was observed that in Capivari was detected a greater presence of filarial larvae. Anthropogenic influences mainly by the presence of sewage is being able to compromise the health quality of the micro basins studied carrying a significant pollutant load to the Juturnaíba reservoir. The monitoring of the sanitary quality of the watersheds that supply the population may indicate when it is necessary to adopt more effective measures in the treatment of water supply of cities.

The challenges of river water quality management are so enormous, due to the unpredictive modes of contamination. Monitoring different sources of pollutant load contribution to the river basin is also quite tasking, resulting to laborious and expensive process which sometimes lead to analytical errors. This study deals with the assessment of the physico– chemicaland bacteriological parameters of water samples from River Amba during the period of August 2017 to January 2018 and developing regression models. Water quality Parameters such as Temperature, Turbidity (NTU), Suspended solids (mg/l), Colour, Total solids, Total dissolved solids, Electrical conductivity (μs/cm), pH, Hardness, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Total Coliform were obtained and compared with water quality standards. The results of the water quality analysis of the study in comparison with drinking water quality standard issued byWorld Health Organization(WHO) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) revealed that most of the water quality parameters were not adequate to pronounce the water potable. Hence adequate water treatment processes should be employed to make the water fit for consumption and other domestic uses. Statistical analysis was done, in which the systematic correlation and regressionanalysis showed a significant linear relationship between different pairs of water quality parameters. The highest correlation coefficient between different pairs of parameters obtained is (r = 0.999), resulting from the correlation between TS and SS. Multiple regression analysis was also carried out and regression equations were developed. It was observed that the parameters studied had a positive correlation with each other.

7. RECONNAISSANCE STUDY
This survey will give an overview of the geographical location of the water
body to be monitored, its accessibility all kind of human influences to decide
appropriate sampling location and also appropriate number of sampling
locations. The survey may include acquisition of following information:
a) Location map
b) Background information on water body
c) Human activities around the water body like mass bathing, melon farming,
cattle wading etc.
d) Identification of potential polluting sources
e) Water abstraction – quantity and uses
f) Water flow regulation - schedule, quantity etc
8. SAMPLING NETWORK
It is important to consider optimum number of location, sampling frequency and
parameters required to fulfil the desired objectives.
Sampling Frequency
The sampling frequency is governed by the level of variation in water quality of a
water body. If variations are large in a short duration of time, a larger frequency is
required to cover such variations. On the other hand, if there is no significant
variation in water quality, frequent collection of sample is not required. The water
quality variations could be of two types i.e. random and cyclic or seasonal. In case
of random variations e.g. due to sudden rainfall in the catchment or sudden
release of water from the dam etc., increased frequency may not help much as
such variations are highly unpredictable. Thus, within the available resources it is
not cost effective to cover such variations. In case of the water bodies having
cyclic variations more frequently, sampling on monthly basis is justified. But for all
those water bodies having stable water quality round the year, monthly sampling is
not justified.

General Guidelines for Surface Water Sampling
Samples will be collected from well-mixed section of the river (main stream)
30 cm below the water surface using a weighted bottle or DO sampler.
Samples from reservoir sites will be collected from the outgoing canal, power
channel or water intake structure, in case water is pumped. When there is no
discharge in the canal, sample will be collected from the upstream side of the
regulator structure, directly from the reservoir.
DO is determined in a sample collected in a DO bottle using a DO sampler. The
DO in the sample must be fixed immediately after collection, using chemical
reagents. DO concentration can then be determined either in the field or
later, in a level I or level II laboratory.

15. SCOPE
Thus study is intended to guide water quality officers through the process of
setting up monitoring programmes for the purpose of providing a valid
database for water-quality assessments, including general guidance to
identify the purpose of the system, its structure, choice of technology,
institutional affiliation and expected results.
The study describes the kinds of variables needed when water quality is to be
monitored for different purposes such as agriculture/irrigation, drinking-
water sources, industrial water demand, livestock needs, etc.
The study provides guidance on the selection of main monitoring methods and
techniques for the different variables.
