The Drunk Bus Should Be Kept Around Essay
The Drunk Bus Should Be Kept Around
I remember hearing stories of such a thing called the drunk bus before I came to college, but I was not
exactly sure what it was. I just figured the bus took a bunch of drunken college students to the bars
when they wanted to go. Now that I am a first year student at State U, I understand I was not that far
from the truth. Some say the bus should be taken away, but the fact of the matter is the bus is a
necessity at college since there will always be drinking. This way, when all of the students are done
drinking at school and want to go to the bars, they are not putting themselves or any other members of
the community in danger by drinking and driving.
Safety is always a factor
Of course, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am also positive if there were to be a terrible wreck caused by an intoxicated student, the entire
community would all agree that the drunk bus is a wise choice to keep in commission. If the drunk bus
were to go out of commission, then I am certain the amount of accidents would rise dramatically.
Sober students ride the bus as well
Not every person who gets on the bus is intoxicated. I have talked with many of my friends and they
tell me that they hardly ever are intoxicated when they go on the bus, but the just want to have a good
time and dance at the club. If students ask the bus driver, he will also make stops to local grocery
stores such as Wal Mart and Hy Vee. I know many students that go on the bus just hang out at the bar
to have fun, without drinking. Therefore, this shows how the bus has more than one use of just
transporting drunken students.
Students will always drink
I read a very interesting book called Behind the Arch: The Truth about Drinking at Buena Vista
University. This book explained how the Storm Lake, IA community feels that having the drunk Bus
around only encourages students to drink. I think the community needs to realize if there were no bus
to transport intoxicated students to and from the bars, the students only option would be to drive
intoxicated, which should never happen. Eighty five percent (or 334) of the 395 students who
completed the online survey indicated they drank (14). It is common knowledge there

Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge Essay
Out of all the stories I have read in class so far, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose
Bierce, has touched me most. When I first began reading the story I felt as though I was not interested,
because my assumptions of what the story was going to be about were completely different than the
stories actual content. As I set aside my judgment and let myself try to enjoy the story, I found myself
anxiously reading to the bitter end. This story was not only interesting and unique, but also had an
added twist at the end, which surprised most readers. Depending on how observant the reader is with
picking up on foreshadowing and symbolic meaning, one may realize before the final sentences that
Peyton Farquar was not actually escaping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this section is not necessarily a crucial part of the story, it does help build Peyton s character as
well as the overall character of the story.
The third part of this story focuses attention back to the scene at the bridge, where the authors
deceiving words make the reader think Peyton has escaped from the rope and now desperately fights
his way home to the loving arms of his wife again. As I said before this part of the story continues on a
systematic path, describing every little detail occurring from Peyton s point of view up until the last
seconds before his death.
The main theme of this story, dying, opened my eyes to a view I had never thought about before. The
author presents an in depth narrative into the mind and thoughts of someone who is in the process of
his last minutes of life. This could also be characterized by going through some of the five stages of
dying: Denial, Anger, Depression, and Acceptance. An example of Denial would be when Peyton says,
quot;If I could free my hands, quot; he thought, quot;I might throw off the noose and spring into the
stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously, reach the bank, take to the
woods and get away home. My home, thank God, is as yet outside their lines; my wife and little ones
are still beyond the invader s farthest advance. quot; Peyton shows signs of denial in this segment by
presenting the possibility of escaping

Enrico Fermi and the Development of the Atomic Bomb
The 20th century saw many important discoveries which impacted people worldwide. Great
discoveries were made in the realm of science and technology which lead to the atomic age. One of
the leading pioneers in the area of physics was Enrico Fermi. Without his contributions, the atomic
bomb may not have been developed or would have possibly been postponed. Enrico Fermi was born
into a family who had enough money to live comfortably. Fermi was born in Rome on the 29th of
September,1901, the son of Alberto Fermi, a Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Communications, and
Ida de Gattis (Mawson 12). Although he had a comfortable life, he also had his share of problems and

His family had enough money to send him to college but he was still able to get scholarships for his

years at the University of Pisa, gaining his doctoral degree in physics in 1922 #8230; (12). He was
even teaching his teachers there by 1920. While still an undergraduate, Fermi worked out his first
theory of permanent value to physics. He also attended the Universities of Rome, Leiden and
Gottingen. His only setback was a period of post doctoral study in Germany in 1923 among such
talents such as Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg when his talents went unrecognized (154). He
preferred simplicity and concreteness rather than pretension and the philosophic German style. J.
Robert Oppenheimer, the American theorist, later described Fermi as not a philosopher and unable to
let things be foggy. He had a passion for clarity. After Fermi graduated, he went straight to work. He
began teaching at different universities. He taught at the University of Florence from 1924

The Benefits Of Going To A Community College
According to Jenkins and Fink, the writers for the Community College Research Center, an average of
38% of community colleges students transfer to a 4 year college and 42% of the students complete a
bachelor s degree within the next 6 years. Going to a community college is very beneficial and
affordable to children with high or low income. While I am taking Economics my teacher broke down
the concepts and benefits of going to a community college versus a university. For example, going to
Moraine Valley Community College is about $3,570 a year for their tuition, while the University of
Illinois is around $15,686 in tution. If you go to Moraine Valley Community College for 2 years you
will only be paying about $7,140 versus going to the University of Illinois for 2 years and paying
$31,372 Your saving $24,232 dollars if you go to a 2 year college versus going the whole 4 years. If
people are struggling financially this can be a financial advantage. Some junior colleges cost less than
two thousand dollars each semester for students who attend full time and it gives students some time
to prepare for a 4 year university if they plan on taking their education further. Going to a community
college helps students to set goals and aspects for their future career they want to pursue to transfer to
a university. So why doesn t Joliet West counselors promote the idea of going to a community college?

Students who may not know much about going to a community college may think

The Two Witnesses of Revelation
Who are the witnesses of Revelation 11? What is there importance? There are multiple theories on
who these witness are. One of the most popular theories is that it will be Elijah and Enoch because
they were taken away by God before their death.(2 Kings 2:11; Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5) Others
believe that it will be Moses, who turned water to blood and sent other plagues on Egypt, and Elijah
because he stopped the rain in Israel for 3 1/2 years. (Exodus 7 12; 1 Kings 17:1) Another theory
believes that the two witnesses are the two houses of Israel. Finally, another theory is that these two
witnesses will be completely new. All of these have different twists and use scripture to back them up.
However, almost everyone believes their importance in the end times because it is pretty clearly stated
in the Bible. (Revelation 11: 1 14) First, let us look at the theory that the Moses and Elijah are the two
witnesses. The most common reason to believe Moses and Elijah are the two witnesses are because
the miracles they will perform are similar to the judgments inflicted in the Old Testament by Moses
and Elijah for the purpose of stimulating repentance. Elijah called down fire from heaven (2 Kings
1:10, 12) and pronounced a three and one half year drought on the land (1 Kings 17:1; James 5:17) the
same length as the drought brought by the two witnesses (Rev. 11:6). Moses turned the waters of the
Nile into blood (Ex. 7:17 21) and announced the other plagues on Egypt recorded in

One s Status In Nineteenth Century Rio De Janeiro
One s status in nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro had a huge impact on all areas of their life. It could
allow them to have full or limited access to institutions, it determined their employment opportunities,
determined if they can participate in political matters, and even determined where in the city they were
allowed to travel. The three biggest factors that shaped a person s position in society were family
status or ancestry, property and slave ownership, and occupation
A person s family status and ancestry was probably the most important determinant of one s status. In
nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro, a person was often born into their status. If they were born into a

Since young elites would automatically be trained for medicine, the law, or the priesthood, and he
would be introduced to the imperial court and enjoy the high status of a courtier, occupation was not a
primary status determinant for the high status people (Karasch 69). If someone was a merchant, clerk,
shopkeeper, tavern owner, craftsman or artisan, than they were of middle status. These jobs were
mostly known as middle status jobs because they required manual labour. Even if a person was to
make a decent amount of money from one of these jobs, they would remain in the middle status
because their job required manual labour, which was looked down on. If a person s occupation was
being a soldier, sailor, fisherman, or sailor, they were of low status, and then at the very bottom of
society were beggars, vagrants, scavenges, and the poorest of the poor, mainly people of color and ex
slaves who owned not even one slave (Karasch 70). It was rare for someone to change their status
based on their occupation. If a person of low status was the slave of a middle status worker, then they
were typically the only people who, after being freed, could raise their status. Middle status owners
often taught their low status slaves the skills needed for their occupation, and then, once that slave was
freed, they had the skills needed to work in that field and raise their status from low to

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA is an organization accountable for
phenomenal space exploration. The breakthrough for this agency was on their Apollo 11 mission with
the first moon landing in July 1969 with Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon. His
prominent phrase That s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind sparked a flame for space
exploration in the hearts of millions. This feat was unheard of at this time period since the Apollo 11

475 Japanese American Internment Camps
On January 14, 1942 president Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This order authorized the
removement of all Japanese Americans into internment camps. One of those camps being located 30
minutes away from where I reside. It horrifies me to picture how this man could exclude and relocate
innocent people into camps simply because they were of the same race as our country s enemy at the
time. These Americans were treated with no respect, stripped from their rights, and even killed at these
camps. The name of the camp near me is Rohwer and it is located in Desha county. At least 8,475
Japanese Americans were held there and most of them were school aged children. These people did

According to the article, What Leads to Success in Life written by Jocelyn K. Giel, there are three
types of attributes that she states lead to a prosperous lifestyle. Using research produced by Walter
Mischel, a Stanford Psychologist, and other scientists, the first quality that she lists is self control, or
the ability to make decisions along with resisting worldly temptations. The next characteristics,
passion and perseverance, are traits that Giel uses of research conducted by Angela Duckworth, a
Harvard researcher, and Duckworth integrated these two attributes and labels them as grit . Grit,
according to Duckworth, is the tendency to not abandon tasks as well as not looking for a change , and

Scientists conducted the test to observe the concept of delayed gratification of four year old children.
The results concluded that children who were able to resist eating a marshmallow, or treat, for fifteen
whole minutes were the ones who led better lives that were more behaved, less prone to addiction, and
scored higher on the SAT when re examined during their high school years. While the Giel s article
did not provide details concerning the children s upbringing or childhood, it provides a connection to
the children who possessed self control and consequently, how their lives are influenced by it.
However, Giel expresses later in the article that self control is not the only factor of success and then
introduces the two traits described by Duckworth as passion and perseverance, or grit. Duckworth
arrived at this conclusion after carefully studying psychologist Catherine Morris Cox s findings on
world recognized geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Leonardo Da Vinci. If these people, who are
prodigies in their respective fields, all possess these similar attributes, then logic may follow that these
qualities may indeed be the key to

At the moment of its waking Sacramento lost...its character... (Didion 173). In other words, Didion is
pointing out how Sacramento is becoming more immoral as urbanization and industrialization occur.
However, what is most interesting is how Didion expresses Sacramento s loss of character through her
own experiences. For instance, Didion describes her wonderful memories basking in the Californian
sun, rivers, fields and valleys as a child, showcasing the real natural Sacramento. However, later on as
a n adult when she returns to Sacramento, Didion finds that the Sacramento she has been seeking is no
longer there, as a result of industrial development: It is hard to find California now, unsettling to
wonder how much of it was merely imagined or improvised; melancholy to realize how much of
anyone s memory no true memory at all...I have an indelibly vivid memory , for example, of how
Prohibition affected the hop growers around Sacramento... (Didion 57)
In the excerpt above Didion expresses how she was unable to reconnect with the California she grew
up with because of all the changes it has suffered. She also mentions prohibition, which by definition
is a reform movement that outlawed drinking because it s effects on the home, in order to really
capture how increasing industrialization led to the gradual loss of the traditional Californian way of
life. She uses prohibition as an example to show how people s ideas are shifting with the introduction

How Does Skin-Tone Crayons Make A Negative Aspect Of...
The content on children s programming on public television greatly impacts cultural sensitivity. The
amount of diversity we have in the United States causes us to have cultural sensitivity on our public
programs which could be positive or negative. Having cultural sensitivity on public programming can
help people acknowledge and accept other ethnicities but, a negative aspect of cultural sensitivity is
over accommodating toward people of these other ethnicities and acting different toward them. Racial
and cultural awareness starts when children are infants and toddlers. At that age, children learn what is
me and what is not me (Biles, Barbara). After a workshop session on cultural awareness, I was asked,
Does this really matter? Will adding skin tone crayons make a difference in children s lives? Yes, I
said, skin tone crayons help a child become aware of who he is and who others are (Biles, Barbara).
The small changes like this will help kids develop positive feelings about their racial and cultural
identity (Biles, Barbara). Children need to be enlightened to cultural awareness at an early ... Show

Sometimes, there is a fear or accidentally stereotyping people of other ethnicities and acting safe, or
more reserved. At some point in a child s life, their parent needs to talk to them about discrimination
and racism. But, parents also feel uncomfortable talking to their children about cultural diversity. For
example, if a child sees someone who is Asian in a grocery store and asked why they look different
then he or she does, the parent of the child will tell the child to stop talking or stop staring. But, telling
a young child who is just trying to get an explanation on why they are different to not talk about it
could be reinforcing that these differences are in some way negative (Children and Cultural

We Both Reach For The Gun Analysis
In 1975, Chicago became a Broadway hit due to the work of Bob Fosse, John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Ebb created the lyrics and also worked with Fosse to write the book, while Kander created the music.
Chicago portrays a theme that celebrity statuses corrupt judicial system. The idea of celebrity
criminals appears throughout the musical as the girls fight for attention in press in order to help win
their trial. Mamma Morton clearly says (33 minutes into the movie) Murder is a form of entertainment
here and the musical proves that statement true. The most dominant example of celebrity criminals
gaining the favor of the public eye is when Roxie makes up her entire life story. Billy Flynn asks her
questions about her past, like where she was born or where her parents are, only to completely change
her answers. The song We Both Reached for the Gun showcases that Flynn acts more like a publicist
than a lawyer. Roxie s entire life was made up and told to the press so she could appeal innocent and
make the public take sympathy on her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

celebrity before she was arrested. The attention then shifts to Roxie and leaves Velma feeling

the motive that maybe more attention will shift back to her. As soon as there is a new murder in the
city the attention of the media shifts, yet again, and this time away from Roxie and Velma. In pursuit
of attention, Roxie faints and then starts the rumor that she is pregnant in hopes the court could never
kill a pregnant woman. Mamma Morton understands the idea that fame benefits the girls on trial, so
she takes bribes in order to help them get publicity. As a jail supervisor, she is a representation of the

Comparing Milner And Goodale s Dichotomy
3.1 Anatomy of the two pathways
As visual information exits in the occipital lobe, it then follows two main pathways.
The dorsal pathway begins with V1, goes through V2, then to the dorsomedial area (DM/
V6) and Visual area MT (middle temporal/ V5) and to the posterior parietal cortex. The
ventral pathway travels from V1, goes through V2, then through visual area V4, and
finally to the inferior temporal cortex (IP cortex).
3.2 History before Milner and Goodale s division
I would like to use a sentence from Goodale Milner (1995) as a beginning. In the

impairments: inability to perceive the visual field as a whole (simultanagnosia),
difficulty in fixating the eyes (oculomotor apraxia), and inability to move the hand to a
specific object by using vision (optic ataxia) (Bálint, 1909). A patient with bilateral
parietal damages causing disorders of spatial attention, gaze, and visually guided

The Roaring Twenties were an age of dramatic political, social, and economic change. Women wanted
new and improved rights and the nation s wealth doubled between 1920 and 1929. Culture, values,
and the technology of America changed and it had only just begun. The Roaring Twenties were
considered as a celebration of youth . The many experiences that came from WWI had transitioned
into the growth of cities, new industries, and new morals. Women finally won the right to vote in
1920, and there were new roles for them in the workplace. Many of the social changes greatly affected
the new world. There was an increasing availability of birth control which eventually led to a decline

Some were the cake walk, the black bottom, the flea hop, and most popular, the jitter bug. Many jazz
bands played at dance halls in New York City and in the Aragon in Chicago. All of the radio stations
around America played jazz. During this time, 100 million phonograph records were sold in 1927

famous artist was F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote the Great Gatsby in 1925. It took him five months to

For instance, Hitler s purpose in writing Mein Kampf was present in his goals and philosophy. The
major themes of the book are the superiority of the Aryan race, Hitler s plan for the Aryan world rule
and the guilt of the Jews, as destroyers of the world ( Mein Kampf ). Hitler wanted to go into detail
about his plans for Germany, so he wrote Mein Kampf. Since a great deal of people had the same
goals, it was easy for them to enjoy the book. Furthermore, He wrote about his foreign policy goals
which highlighted the capture of the land in Eastern Europe and Soviet Russia to be used as living
space for the German people. He also used the book as a form for espousing his anti jewish program (
Mein Kampf ). Hitler s plans for Germany and his desires to change it were all part of Mein Kampf
and what was admired about it. The readers enjoyed Hitler s plans and truly believed the plans would
make Germany better which is why they liked Mein Kampf. Moreover, Volume one was meant to be
Hitler s autobiography and volume two to show how the Nazi party came into being. The book as a
whole according to the preface was to set forth Hitler s aims and beliefs (Smelser). Mein Kampf was
really written for Hitler to express his thoughts and plans which was to remove all Jews from

popularity of the book Mein Kampf was partly due to why Hitler wrote it and had it published. In

it was condensed to a liquid which ran back down the condenser to the pear shaped flask. The strong

Obesity Among African Americans Essay
Fried chicken, mash potatoes and collard greens mixed with fatback meat was my family s favorite
Sunday meal. Soul food, as it has been called, is valued by many African American families. Given
the worldwide obesity epidemic that appears to be affecting most ethnic groups, there is an
appreciation that the causes of obesity among African American families and others must lie in the
fundamental aspects of the food supply (Capers, C et al. 2011). In my opinion, African Americans in
the United Sates are more likely to be obese because there is a large number of low income families
and many are uninsured. According to the Office of Minority Health, African American women have

According to the World Health Organization some characteristics of obesity are abnormal or excessive
fat accumulation that may impair health, a body mass index over 30 which is the most useful

Policies and regulatory issues impacting obesity and access to care in the African American population
have been limited due to the lack of financial and governmental support. However, public schools are
required to have a mandatory physical activity class for students as an attempt to increase children
recreational activity. In addition, the talk of the nationwide health care was an attempt to ensure the
decrease of health disparities among the obese population. The government has provided financial
support to some low income families by a program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

Dual Vagina
So. A woman with two vaginas exists. Pornhub is probably drooling over the opportunity to get such a
creature on its website and surely, your imagination is hardly tame right now. The possibilities with
having two vaginas really is endless, but for the sake of this article, (and all of our sick minds) let s
rope it in a bit. Here are just five things you didn t know about this dual vagina wielding female.
1. SHE DIDN T KNOW SHE HAD TWO VAGINAS
One would think that having two vaginas would be fairly obvious right? Well, according to YouTube
star Cassandra Bankson, that s just not true. It was only recently that she found out she had two
vaginas. A trip to the doctor for some back pain was the route of the shocking reveal. From then on,
she s been understandably famous. PornHub has yet to make her any offers.

SEPTUM COVERS HER G SPOT; PORNHUB DISSAPOINTED
If PornHub ever wants to get a good close up of her G Spot (assuming PornHub makes her an offer)
they will have to deal with the septum. Apparently, the septum conveniently separates the two vaginas
while simultaneously covering her G spot. For those who always thought the G spot was a myth, well,
sorry to break it to you. She was probably just lying to make you feel better.
4. SHE HAS A HIGHER RISK OF MISCARRIAGE
One would think that having two vaginas would double the chances of bearing children, but in fact, it
s quite the opposite. She states that the uteri are abnormally small, which increases the risk of
miscarriage and premature babies. On the upside, pregnancies have been known to ruin many a career
on Pornhub. So she s got then going for her, which is nice.
5. HER SEX LIFE IS GOOD
At the end of the day, through all the inconveniences, Cassandra s sex life is good. Not great, not bad,
but good. Her lucky boyfriend has even chimed in saying he pays equal attention to both vaginas.

Pursuing A Career As A Soccer Player
Everybody has asked, what is the most interesting job? What do you want to study? In these days,
people are looking for a good job that can improve his/her future, but there some types of jobs that are
not secure or do not offer too many opportunities. Therefore, people need to be careful about what
they want to study. There are three types of jobs I would like to work: Soccer coach, business
administration, and doctor.
One of the three jobs I would like to work is soccer coach. I chose this because I love soccer. To be
honest, since I was a child, I have wanted to be a soccer player. I had that dream on my mind, but
unfortunately, I had a serious injury in my knee and I could not play anymore. The reason why I want
to be a soccer coach is because I want to be involved in the soccer world, even if I have an injury in
my knee. I want to create new professional soccer players. I just want to teach people who love soccer
how to play. Soccer is the most popular sport around the world, especially in Latin America and
Europe and it is one of the few sports in which you can use your whole body: feet, arms, hands, chest,
shoulders, and even your back. To be a soccer coach you need to be a boss, a father, you have to know
hot treat your team and give them good advice, you need to have leadership, and you have to have
sufficient knowledge about the sport. Before being a coach, you have to do a special course. After that
you get an authorized license. In the United States

An Evaluation Of A Business System Essay
Companies must ensure that they put in place mechanisms that will ensure upgrading the systems in
the work place are hassle free. Early preparations must be put in place to ensure that there is very little
disturbance to clients. The movement is due to an increase in the number of clients and the intention
of the firm to serve these clients better. AET has come up with a migration strategy that is divided into
three phases. Once the plan is executed, there are possibilities that the migration will serve the
intended clients in the best way possible. The cost of the entire exercise and an overview of the work
breakdown structure and the related costs are also captured.
Introduction
AET is a rapidly growing IT firm. It, therefore, means that their current systems cannot support most
of their operations. According to Flinttzer, Hein, Kahse, Mohse, et al. (2014) when the client base
increases, it is prudent that measures must be put in place to ensure the firm meets the needs of the
clients. The system upgrade is not supposed to cause a breakdown in the operations of the firm. Proper
selection of the person to be in charge of the program is key to ensuring the success of the program.
Proper prior preparation and the laying of the firm s migration strategy will ensure that there are no
hiccups experienced on the way (Meads, 2011). It is on this basis that AET has put in place a strong
team that will ensure the upgrade is achieved.

The Issue Of Hate Crimes
Rashawn Augustin
Soc 308
One of the major problems that we are facing in the world are hate crimes. Despite this being a major
issues, there appears to be no solution in sight to put a stop to hate crimes. For this paper I chose to
focus on hate crimes I can gain more knowledge about this topic and because it s something that I
have personally experienced. Throughout U.S. history, a significant proportion of all murders,
assaults, and acts of vandalism have been fueled by hatred. As Native Americans have been described
as the first hate crime victims, members of all immigrant groups have been subjected to
discrimination, harassment, and violence.
When people think of hate crimes they often mention the KKK and African Americans or Hitler and
Jewish people. To be exact, a hate crime is known to us a bias motivated crime which is usually
motivated by race, religion, sexuality etc that typically involves violent acts. There are various forms
of hate crimes that occur throughout the world. A few examples of this are racist hate crimes,
homophobic hate crimes, religious hate crimes, transgender hate crimes, and even disability hate
crimes. Every hour, a crime motivated by the perpetrator s bias against the victim occurs in the United
States. These hate crimes terrorize whole communities by making members of certain classes whether
racial minorities, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, religious minorities or people

Crime Is Everywhere In America
Crime is everywhere in America. Different places react in different ways to the same ideas. The
question being asked is, Are certain policies and procedures effective and/or ineffective and why? In
my opinion, crime prevention is measured not by methods and intentions, but by the outcome of the
procedure/policy. Honestly, no matter how brilliant the policy or procedure may be, the result will not
be the same in one place than it is in another. For example, training police in community policing may
not directly reduce crime in the community. In order to learn whether certain policies or procedures
can reduce violent crime in different places, strong programs should help out. In other words, strong

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Employees
5.3 .2 Disadvantages
Apart from the advantages offered by captives, there are some factors that limit captive expected
performance.
These include:
Lack of market co operation.
Lack of adequate statistics.
Government control.
Insurance nationalism.
Tied up capital.
Reinsurance cost.
While companies form captives with the initial motive of underwriting its parent s risks, they are
likely to need the cooperation of the market. Sometime market co operation is very difficult to get,
especially in a very difficult insurance market environment where the possibility of creating a parent
company is either not available or it is possible only at exorbitant cost.

The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a
substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by
corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk
management.
The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management
and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along
have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of
insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the
competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive
presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers.
The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the
growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the
average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries. Thus, firms with
relatively favourable loss experience are contributing to losses of those with poorer experience.
Captives constituted a big threat for the conventional insurance because they have a lot going for
them. The traditional insurance market did not welcome captive movement because it saw the
movement as a threat to its share of the insurance market. They were made to accept captives when
they realised that many businesses were flourishing as a result of captive activities and they benefited
directly and indirect from those

Effects Of The Battle Of Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo and its Effect on Today s Artillery
Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the world s greatest military strategists, led the French at the Battle of
Waterloo. During his time as a General, even in defeat, his tactics in the way he used artillery were
beyond reproach. His successes and errors made throughout the Battle of Waterloo had a direct effect
on how we use artillery today.
The Battle of Waterloo, which took place on 18 June 1815, was the final battle of the Napoleonic wars
and ended Napoleon s reign as emperor. The French marched into Belgium with 70,000 troops and
256 artillery pieces (Stevenson, n.d.). They were met by the British Army led by, the Duke of
Wellington, Arthur Wellesly. Combined with its allies (Germans, Belgians, Dutch, and Prussians), the
British Army consisted of 67,000 troops and 156 artillery pieces.
Napoleon s greatest strength was the use of artillery, but with the heavy rain preceding the battle, he
worried that the muddy battlefield would restrict his artillery from advancing. This led to a fatal
miscalculation he decides not to attack until midday, in an attempt to allow the battlefield to dry. The
delay, would allow Marshal Blucher s Prussian Army enough time to join the fight.
Napoleon starts the battle by bringing up 74 artillery pieces and begins bombarding the British with
canon fire. They sweep and zone the battlefield with 3000 rounds over 30 minutes. To counteract the
artillery fire, Duke Wellington

Chronic Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It is thought that nearly 85% of adults
have some stage of periodontal disease. With that being said it means periodontal disease is more
common than heart disease and cancer. The good thing about this disease is that if it is caught in an
early stage it can be reversible, but if it is left untreated it can become very dangerous leading to tooth
loss and possibly surgery.
Periodontal disease refers to a group of problems that arise in the crevice between the gum and the

There are many categories of periodontal disease. They include chronic periodontitis, aggressive
periodontitis, disease related periodontitis, and acute necrotizing periodontal disease. Just because you
have gingivitis does not mean you will get periodontitis, in fact some experts believe that they are two
very different diseases. Chronic periodontitis is basically the same thing as gingivitis but it has a few
more symptoms including; halitosis, a persistent metallic taste in the mouth, and gingival recession.
Most patients who have this will not even worry or they might not even know. Most of the time
inflammation and bone destruction is painless, patients just assume that they just need to floss more or
brush more often. This can often be solved by better oral care. Patients who suffer from aggressive
periodontitis are normally younger than patients who have the chronic form. People who have this are
generally healthy other than the presence of periodontal disease. These people will experience rapid
loss of periodontal attachment fibers and bone destruction. They also will have a depressed neutrophil
function, the neutrophils can also be defective, resulting in depressed chemotaxis and phagocytosis.

Masculinity is seen as a cultural constructions throughout history, by which males are assigned certain

Quest For An Earthly Paradise And The Anticipation Of A...
Lamentation and Hope in the Depiction of Paradise
The quest for an earthly paradise and the anticipation of a heavenly one is a drive that has always
prevailed in humankind s search for God and redemption from the original sin. The desire for a
terrestrial manifestation of paradise, a so called lost origin is predominantly reflected in writers
depictions of the fall of man. This can be seen in Milton s Paradise Lost and Lucy Hutchinson s Order
and Disorder. Both these epic poems at times magnify the sadness and gravity of the loss of a
paradisal home in which Adam and Eve as our fore parents dwelt under God s close guidance and
love. The fascination with Eden s bliss is manifested in Adam and Eve s admiration, however it also
extends to Satan s various instances of questioning his own actions in the shadow of such beauty.
Perhaps crucial to both interpretations of the fall of man is that the knowledge gained from the
forbidden fruit is the realization of loss, the sudden true appreciation of the beauty of a paradise that is
now lost. On the other hand the promise of redemption is provided through God s mercy in Death,
thus allowing for a hope and anticipation of a heavenly paradise. This portrayal of a merciful God in
Paradise Lost and Order and Disorder, grows out of man s search for redemption and a desire to be
united with God in a heavenly paradise. Nostalgia and anticipation of paradise thus manifest through
the lamentations of loss and mercy in death

The Reality Of Reality Tv Essay
It is a given that the culture we consume shapes who we are, more specifically what we view on
television shapes the content of our minds. It is also generally known that children can be easily
influenced by what they see on television. Reality TV is no exception to this rule. It may appear that
reality TV is a benign phenomenon but it is in fact a virus that has quickly diseased our society. More
specifically, it attracts girls most mercilessly by affecting them negatively as to how they perceive
themselves. Indeed, girls who watch reality TV learn that deceit and meanness is normal behaviour in
order to achieve success, begin to self objectify more and have a higher expectation of more drama
and conflict in their lives as well. The reality of reality TV is that it negatively portrays females. Is
there no end to the onslaught on the female gender by television?
According to Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the Parents
Television Council, Because girls are seeing people behaving in a negative way on reality programs,
they tend to accept that that s normative behaviour. (Semigram, 1) That may be fine when the
behaviour is positive but what of the behaviour viewed on reality TV? Watching a heavy diet of

Labor Unions Today
Labor unions today
Today most labor unions in the United States are members of one of two larger umbrella
organizations: the American Federation of Labor Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL CIO) or
the Change to Win Federation, which split from the AFL CIO in 2005. Both organizations advocate
policies and legislation favorable to workers in the United States and Canada, and take an active role
in Democratic party politics. The AFL CIO is especially concerned with global trade issues.
Private sector union members are tightly regulated by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA),

Labor Education Programs in the United States
In the US, labor education programs such as the Harvard Trade Union Program created in 1942 by
Harvard University professor John T. Dunlop sought to educate union members to deal with important
contemporary workplace and labor law issues of the day. The Harvard Trade Union Program is now
currently part of a broader initiative at Harvard Law School called the Labor and Worklife Program
that deals with a wide variety of labor and employment issues from union pension investment funds to
the effects of nanotechnology on labor markets and the workplace.

Jurisdiction of labor unions
Labor unions use the term jurisdiction to refer to their claims to represent workers who perform a
certain type of work and the right of their members to perform such work. For example, the work of
unloading containerized cargo at United States ports, which both the International Longshore and
Warehouse Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have claimed rightfully should be
assigned to workers they represent. A jurisdictional strike is a concerted refusal to work undertaken by
a union to assert its members right to such

Thriving Generations Of The House Of Medici
The Impact of the Thriving Generations of the House of Medici The Renaissance was an essential
time period in European history, which occurred roughly between 1300 and 1600 in Florence, Italy.
During this epoch, attributes of the Renaissance, such as Classical humanism and an upbringing of
political life spread throughout Western Europe. Moreover, out of the 50,000 people in Florence,
around 100 families have influenced the Renaissance s attributes; the most notable of these being the
Medici family (Fiero 377 378). Beginning with Giovanni di Bicci de Medici s establishment of the
Medici Bank, the family acquired a significant amount of wealth, rising their power during the
fourteenth century. The bank expanded to the farthest corners of Europe, in which they obtained
political control over Florence and the Church. Apart from the political influence, out of the four
generations of the House of Medici, Cosimo, or Cosimo the Elder, and Lorenzo, or Lorenzo the
Magnificent, have influenced the components of Classical humanism, consisting of art, architecture,
and literature. Due to their gain of wealth from the hands of Giovanni di Bicci de Medici, the family
was appointed succession over Florence, allowing them to contribute to the rise of humanism and
political ideals across Europe. Because Giovanni di Bicci de Medici s establishment of the Medici
Bank has provided wealth under the Medici family name, the family was able to take over the reign of

Opera in the Romantic Period was a time when opera changed drastically, especially in the country of
Italy. The recognition of singers as being important, almost irreplaceable, in the art of bel canto opera
changed the idea of a vocalist in opera forever. A singer s voice was prized and Italian composers, like
Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini wrote operas and works to showcase the voice, it s color, range and
agility. These Italian composers were moving away from the normal style of composition of the time,

The government was more interested in customs duties that they may generate from these incoming
goods, than in the control and regulation of the arrival and stay of foreigners. The functions of
immigration remained under the said bureau until 1937, when it was transferred again as a division
under the Bureau of Labor. This was mainly to respond to the arrival of Chinese nationals who owned
and operated trade houses, stores, and restaurants in the country. On 22 January 1940, the Second
National Assembly of the Philippine Commonwealth enacted the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940
(Commonwealth Act No. 613). It was signed into law by the President of the United States of America
on September 3, 1940, creating the Bureau of Immigration under the administrative supervision of the
Office of the President. A year or so later, it became an attached agency of the Department of Justice.
Later, its administrative control was returned to the Office of the President. When the Pacific war
broke out in December 1941, the Bureau, then under the Department of Justice, moved to the Bilibid
Prison in Azcarraga Street (now Claro M. Recto Avenue) which the Japanese Imperial Army declared
off limits to anyone during the occupation. Immediately after the war, the Bureau was transferred to
the Bacharach Building at Gate 1 of the South Harbor in Manila, then eventually was moved again to
Building No. 5 at the Customs Bureau at Gate 4. In 1945, in line with the

Nashob A Utopian Society
A Utopian society was an imagined community that would posse highly desirable or nearly perfect
civilization for people. There were many in America but none of them fully made it as a Utopian
society. The first three Utopian cities created were called New Harmony, New Philadelphia Colony,
and Nashoba. All three of them have gone through many challenges, but if these Utopian communities
worked out it would have helped for so much in providing for the citizens that lived in the community.
It would change how everything started into who we are now. I will be talking about them three
societies. New Harmony is a historical town on the Wabash River in Harmony Township, Posey
County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The society was established in 1814, the town was originally
known as Harmony (or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Nashoba Community was an experimental project of Francis Fanny Wright, initiated to educate
and emancipate slaves. It was located in present day Germantown, Tennessee, a Memphis suburb,
along the Wolf River. It was a emancipation plan in which no slaveholders would lose money for
emancipating slaves. Wright proposed that, through a system of unified labor, the slaves would be able
to buy their freedom and then be transported to the independent settlements of Liberia and Haiti.
Wright was strongly influenced by Robert Owen and his utopian community, New Harmony, Indiana.
Surviving for 3 years, Nashoba outlasted New Harmony. Write imagined that if her experimental
community was successful, its methods could be applied throughout the nation. Nashoba is
remembered as an egalitarian, interracial community, but it did not reach any of its goals. Wright left
Nashoba in 1827 for Europe to recover from malaria. During her absence, the trustees managed the
community, but by Wright s return in 1828, Nashoba had

Heidegger s Relationship Between Poetry And Poetry
In the words of Heidegger, the poem is a vortex that snatches us away not gradually, but suddenly, and
thus we are drawn into a conversation. Understanding of poetry is essential to Heidegger s philosophy.
There are two notions, which seem to stand at opposite poles, which are poetry and technology. They
seem to be opposed forms of truth. In modern civilization, we see the world through our technology,
but there was a time when the truth was seen through poetry.
Holderlin (1770 1843) a symbol of the German Romantic Movement had a great impact on Heidegger
s poetic thinking. In his various treatises, Heidegger clarifies his intent in studying thought through
poetry and to enter into the truth of the poems studied. Heidegger believed that language ... Show

We have to use the same language for everyday life and to describe the essence of beings. Poetry can
answer this difficulty, a standing as a golden mean between familiar language and deep language.
There is a difference in the mental effort we exert when we read a common novel and a sophisticated
poem. Poetic language uses uncommon terms and this makes us think deeply about the words, as
compared to common speech. Philosophy is a fruitful field, but Heidegger wanted to recognize some
of its weaknesses that are related to the language we use that often conceals as much as it reveals. Our
task is to let things be and to uncover them. Poetry is a powerful vehicle for

The Characteristics Of Community Psychology
Richard Henry
PSY 324E

A Collective Mind
Before we can discuss what community psychology is, we must understand what a community is. We
often view a community as a collective or randomized people, some happen to work close by, some
happen to like the housing market and decided to raise a family, and some may have been in the same
town for their whole lives, feeling no interest to look beyond. What is represented here, is the
differences within the individuals. No two people have the same exact story, the same upbringing, the
same experience. Often times, your neighbor may be nothing like you, yet you may have similarities.
The similarities may come from the way you both think politically, to the teams you root for. (you
notice he too, has a 12th man sticker plastered on his back windshield)
Community psychology is the collection of individuals, their moralities, their viewpoints on the world
and the basis in which you collectively live. For the example of different communities, I ll take
Portland, Oregon, my new place of residence, versus where I am originally from, Ocean City, New
Jersey. Portland is recognized as one of the more inclusive places in the world, a collection of people
who look out for each other , wanting everyone to feel both welcome and equal. We often look at a
place as being a general population of similar people, where we assume everyone in Portland just
moves here and becomes influenced. But I tend to believe that people live

English Essay Mister Pip
Analyse how contrast between characters helped the author communicate an important message or
idea.
Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones is a novel recounted by the protagonist Matilda. Set in 1990 s
Bougainville, we see Matilda begin to question her Mother s traditional idea s about life as a civil war
rages between the rebels and the Redskins in her homeland. Mr. Watts or Pop eye is given the role
teaching the village children, being the only educated, and consequentially, white man left on the
island. He begins reading Great Expectations to the children and Matilda finds herself becoming
entranced in white civilisation. She gets immersed in the story of the white boy Pip living in London
in the 1800 s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She continues to try and save her daughter, the power of unconditional love overcoming their even
more obviously marked differences.
Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great
Expectations to lead her away from the white world. Dolores comes unannounced to Matilda s class
and tries to educate the children on the only thing she knows well: the importance of faith she didn t
know anything outside what she knew from the bible but as Mr. Watts gets further through the novel
Pip becomes yet even more important to Matilda. Dolores never stops in trying to steer Matilda away
from the white world. The world she knows barely anything about, the world she thinks is evil.
Despite their ever increasing differences Dolores will always continue to protect Matilda from what
she believes is bad.
We see the power of unconditional love shown again through Matilda and Dolores s contrast when
Matilda discovers Great Expectations to have been stolen by her Mother. When Dolores hides Great
Expectations much strife is caused. The Red Skins visit Matilda s island, threatening to burn all of
their possessions unless they give up Pip who is only a character from a book and cannot be given up.
Because the book is not where it is supposed to be Pip cannot be explained. The redskins burn the
whole villages possessions because Dolores fails to come forward and admit to what she had done in
order to retrieve

Connotations Of Cinderella
There is more than just a bipity bopity boo in the Cinderella story. The one you might know is the
French version where she goes to the ball loses her glass slipper and finds her prince charming. While
in the Zimbabwe and Mexican versions, they have to go through different obstacles but always find
the same outcome. Like the ball scene there are connotations of it in both stories. Also the fairy god
mother and how she helps Cinderella get a dress and got her a ride. Particularly in Mufaro s Beautiful
Daughters , Nyasha and her sister Manyara were invited to a party so the prince could find a beautiful
wife of his own, in they same way of the story Little Gold Star It just happened that the prince of the
land wanted to get married. Even though she didn t have anything to wear she went to see the party
and the prince saw her golden star. And the prince from Mufaro s Beautiful Daughters picked Nyasha
because she had a beautiful soul she was kind to everyone she saw and never mean. In the same way
the prince from Little Golden Star he picked Arica because she stood out from every single girl there.

Let s Put Pornography Back In The Closet Analysis
In the article Let s Put Pornography Back in the Closet, the writer tries to identify and define what
pornography and obscenity is. According to the text, feminists believe that pornography is anything
that aims to cause harm to the image of what it means to be a woman. It also includes any source that
depicts the female body being harmed in any way to please the viewer s sexual fantasies. Brownmiller
adds to the feminist definition by stating that when any person is being degraded or humiliated for the
purpose of fulfilling sexual needs it should also be classified as pornography and obscenity. Along
with her definitions for pornography and obscenity, the writer also identifies the First Amendment and
how it relates to her topic. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In today s society things that may be considered obscene and pornographic are much more easily
attained by the average person. She believes that one of the reasons porn is so easily accessible to the
public is because many people cannot differentiate between pornography, obscenity and modern art or
literature; what is considered vulgar and distasteful by some, can also be thought of as beautiful and
classy by others. Brownmiller explains that the women portrayed in magazines today are
photoshopped to represent what a desirable woman is supposed to look like; this has led many women,
including the writer, to feel ashamed and uncomfortable with their bodies. It is because of these
reasons that the writer feels that there should be restrictions on what is allowed to be provided and
distributed to the public. She also believes that the government needs to use today s societal norms,
which apply to the everyday average person to figure out what should be allowed to be released to the
public. The writer states at the end of her article that she doesn t believe the government should
prohibit what she defines as vulgar and distasteful pornography and obscenity, but requests that it
should be removed from every day public

  • 2. The Drunk Bus Should Be Kept Around Essay The Drunk Bus Should Be Kept Around I remember hearing stories of such a thing called the drunk bus before I came to college, but I was not exactly sure what it was. I just figured the bus took a bunch of drunken college students to the bars when they wanted to go. Now that I am a first year student at State U, I understand I was not that far from the truth. Some say the bus should be taken away, but the fact of the matter is the bus is a necessity at college since there will always be drinking. This way, when all of the students are done drinking at school and want to go to the bars, they are not putting themselves or any other members of the community in danger by drinking and driving. Safety is always a factor Of course, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am also positive if there were to be a terrible wreck caused by an intoxicated student, the entire community would all agree that the drunk bus is a wise choice to keep in commission. If the drunk bus were to go out of commission, then I am certain the amount of accidents would rise dramatically. Sober students ride the bus as well Not every person who gets on the bus is intoxicated. I have talked with many of my friends and they tell me that they hardly ever are intoxicated when they go on the bus, but the just want to have a good time and dance at the club. If students ask the bus driver, he will also make stops to local grocery stores such as Wal Mart and Hy Vee. I know many students that go on the bus just hang out at the bar to have fun, without drinking. Therefore, this shows how the bus has more than one use of just transporting drunken students. Students will always drink I read a very interesting book called Behind the Arch: The Truth about Drinking at Buena Vista University. This book explained how the Storm Lake, IA community feels that having the drunk Bus around only encourages students to drink. I think the community needs to realize if there were no bus to transport intoxicated students to and from the bars, the students only option would be to drive intoxicated, which should never happen. Eighty five percent (or 334) of the 395 students who completed the online survey indicated they drank (14). It is common knowledge there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge Essay Out of all the stories I have read in class so far, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, has touched me most. When I first began reading the story I felt as though I was not interested, because my assumptions of what the story was going to be about were completely different than the stories actual content. As I set aside my judgment and let myself try to enjoy the story, I found myself anxiously reading to the bitter end. This story was not only interesting and unique, but also had an added twist at the end, which surprised most readers. Depending on how observant the reader is with picking up on foreshadowing and symbolic meaning, one may realize before the final sentences that Peyton Farquar was not actually escaping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this section is not necessarily a crucial part of the story, it does help build Peyton s character as well as the overall character of the story. The third part of this story focuses attention back to the scene at the bridge, where the authors deceiving words make the reader think Peyton has escaped from the rope and now desperately fights his way home to the loving arms of his wife again. As I said before this part of the story continues on a systematic path, describing every little detail occurring from Peyton s point of view up until the last seconds before his death. The main theme of this story, dying, opened my eyes to a view I had never thought about before. The author presents an in depth narrative into the mind and thoughts of someone who is in the process of his last minutes of life. This could also be characterized by going through some of the five stages of dying: Denial, Anger, Depression, and Acceptance. An example of Denial would be when Peyton says, quot;If I could free my hands, quot; he thought, quot;I might throw off the noose and spring into the stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously, reach the bank, take to the woods and get away home. My home, thank God, is as yet outside their lines; my wife and little ones are still beyond the invader s farthest advance. quot; Peyton shows signs of denial in this segment by presenting the possibility of escaping ... Enrico Fermi and the Development of the Atomic Bomb The 20th century saw many important discoveries which impacted people worldwide. Great discoveries were made in the realm of science and technology which lead to the atomic age. One of the leading pioneers in the area of physics was Enrico Fermi. Without his contributions, the atomic bomb may not have been developed or would have possibly been postponed. Enrico Fermi was born into a family who had enough money to live comfortably. Fermi was born in Rome on the 29th of September,1901, the son of Alberto Fermi, a Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Communications, and Ida de Gattis (Mawson 12). He spent four years at the University of Pisa, gaining his doctoral degree in physics in 1922 #8230; (12). He was even teaching his teachers there by 1920. While still an undergraduate, Fermi worked out his first theory of permanent value to physics. He also attended the Universities of Rome, Leiden and Gottingen. His only setback was a period of post doctoral study in Germany in 1923 among such talents such as Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg when his talents went unrecognized (154). He preferred simplicity and concreteness rather than pretension and the philosophic German style. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theorist, later described Fermi as not a philosopher and unable to let things be foggy. He had a passion for clarity. After Fermi graduated, he went straight to work. He began teaching at different universities. He taught at the University of Florence from 1924 to 1926 and at the University of Rome from 1927 to 1938 (Epstein 87). The Benefits Of Going To A Community College According to Jenkins and Fink, the writers for the Community College Research Center, an average of 38% of community colleges students transfer to a 4 year college and 42% of the students complete a bachelor s degree within the next 6 years. Going to a community college is very beneficial and affordable to children with high or low income. While I am taking Economics my teacher broke down the concepts and benefits of going to a community college versus a university. For example, going to Moraine Valley Community College is about $3,570 a year for their tuition, while the University of Illinois is around $15,686 in tution. If you go to Moraine Valley Community College for 2 years you will only be paying about $7,140 versus going to the University of Illinois for 2 years and paying $31,372 Your saving $24,232 dollars if you go to a 2 year college versus going the whole 4 years. If people are struggling financially this can be a financial advantage. Some junior colleges cost less than two thousand dollars each semester for students who attend full time and it gives students some time to prepare for a 4 year university if they plan on taking their education further. Going to a community college helps students to set goals and aspects for their future career they want to pursue to transfer to a university. So why doesn t Joliet West counselors promote the idea of going to a community college? Audience: Students who may not know much about going to a community college may think ... • 7. The Two Witnesses of Revelation Who are the witnesses of Revelation 11? What is there importance? There are multiple theories on who these witness are. One of the most popular theories is that it will be Elijah and Enoch because they were taken away by God before their death.(2 Kings 2:11; Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5) Others believe that it will be Moses, who turned water to blood and sent other plagues on Egypt, and Elijah because he stopped the rain in Israel for 3 1/2 years. (Exodus 7 12; 1 Kings 17:1) Another theory believes that the two witnesses are the two houses of Israel. Finally, another theory is that these two witnesses will be completely new. All of these have different twists and use scripture to back them up. However, almost everyone believes their importance in the end times because it is pretty clearly stated in the Bible. (Revelation 11: 1 14) First, let us look at the theory that the Moses and Elijah are the two witnesses. The most common reason to believe Moses and Elijah are the two witnesses are because the miracles they will perform are similar to the judgments inflicted in the Old Testament by Moses and Elijah for the purpose of stimulating repentance. Elijah called down fire from heaven (2 Kings 1:10, 12) and pronounced a three and one half year drought on the land (1 Kings 17:1; James 5:17) the same length as the drought brought by the two witnesses (Rev. 11:6). It could allow them to have full or limited access to institutions, it determined their employment opportunities, determined if they can participate in political matters, and even determined where in the city they were allowed to travel. The three biggest factors that shaped a person s position in society were family status or ancestry, property and slave ownership, and occupation A person s family status and ancestry was probably the most important determinant of one s status. Since young elites would automatically be trained for medicine, the law, or the priesthood, and he would be introduced to the imperial court and enjoy the high status of a courtier, occupation was not a primary status determinant for the high status people (Karasch 69). If someone was a merchant, clerk, shopkeeper, tavern owner, craftsman or artisan, than they were of middle status. These jobs were mostly known as middle status jobs because they required manual labour. Even if a person was to make a decent amount of money from one of these jobs, they would remain in the middle status because their job required manual labour, which was looked down on. If a person s occupation was being a soldier, sailor, fisherman, or sailor, they were of low status, and then at the very bottom of society were beggars, vagrants, scavenges, and the poorest of the poor, mainly people of color and ex slaves who owned not even one slave (Karasch 70). It was rare for someone to change their status based on their occupation. If a person of low status was the slave of a middle status worker, then they were typically the only people who, after being freed, could raise their status. Middle status owners often taught their low status slaves the skills needed for their occupation, and then, once that slave was freed, they had the skills needed to work in that field and raise their status from low to ... Using research produced by Walter Mischel, a Stanford Psychologist, and other scientists, the first quality that she lists is self control, or the ability to make decisions along with resisting worldly temptations. The next characteristics, passion and perseverance, are traits that Giel uses of research conducted by Angela Duckworth, a Harvard researcher, and Duckworth integrated these two attributes and labels them as grit . While the Giel s article did not provide details concerning the children s upbringing or childhood, it provides a connection to the children who possessed self control and consequently, how their lives are influenced by it. However, Giel expresses later in the article that self control is not the only factor of success and then introduces the two traits described by Duckworth as passion and perseverance, or grit. Duckworth arrived at this conclusion after carefully studying psychologist Catherine Morris Cox s findings on world recognized geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Leonardo Da Vinci. However, later on as a n adult when she returns to Sacramento, Didion finds that the Sacramento she has been seeking is no longer there, as a result of industrial development: It is hard to find California now, unsettling to wonder how much of it was merely imagined or improvised; melancholy to realize how much of anyone s memory no true memory at all...I have an indelibly vivid memory , for example, of how Prohibition affected the hop growers around Sacramento... The amount of diversity we have in the United States causes us to have cultural sensitivity on our public programs which could be positive or negative. Having cultural sensitivity on public programming can help people acknowledge and accept other ethnicities but, a negative aspect of cultural sensitivity is over accommodating toward people of these other ethnicities and acting different toward them. Racial and cultural awareness starts when children are infants and toddlers. At that age, children learn what is me and what is not me (Biles, Barbara). After a workshop session on cultural awareness, I was asked, Does this really matter? Will adding skin tone crayons make a difference in children s lives? Yes, I said, skin tone crayons help a child become aware of who he is and who others are (Biles, Barbara). Ebb created the lyrics and also worked with Fosse to write the book, while Kander created the music. Chicago portrays a theme that celebrity statuses corrupt judicial system. The idea of celebrity criminals appears throughout the musical as the girls fight for attention in press in order to help win their trial. Mamma Morton clearly says (33 minutes into the movie) Murder is a form of entertainment here and the musical proves that statement true. The most dominant example of celebrity criminals gaining the favor of the public eye is when Roxie makes up her entire life story. Billy Flynn asks her questions about her past, like where she was born or where her parents are, only to completely change her answers. The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk management. The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers. The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries. Thus, firms with relatively favourable loss experience are contributing to losses of those with poorer experience. Captives constituted a big threat for the conventional insurance because they have a lot going for them. The traditional insurance market did not welcome captive movement because it saw the movement as a threat to its share of the insurance market. Effects Of The Battle Of Waterloo The Battle of Waterloo and its Effect on Today s Artillery Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the world s greatest military strategists, led the French at the Battle of Waterloo. During his time as a General, even in defeat, his tactics in the way he used artillery were beyond reproach. His successes and errors made throughout the Battle of Waterloo had a direct effect on how we use artillery today. The Battle of Waterloo, which took place on 18 June 1815, was the final battle of the Napoleonic wars and ended Napoleon s reign as emperor. The French marched into Belgium with 70,000 troops and 256 artillery pieces (Stevenson, n.d.). They were met by the British Army led by, the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesly. Combined with its allies (Germans, Belgians, Dutch, and Prussians), the British Army consisted of 67,000 troops and 156 artillery pieces. Napoleon s greatest strength was the use of artillery, but with the heavy rain preceding the battle, he worried that the muddy battlefield would restrict his artillery from advancing. This led to a fatal miscalculation he decides not to attack until midday, in an attempt to allow the battlefield to dry. The delay, would allow Marshal Blucher s Prussian Army enough time to join the fight. Napoleon starts the battle by bringing up 74 artillery pieces and begins bombarding the British with canon fire. • 35. Quest For An Earthly Paradise And The Anticipation Of A... Lamentation and Hope in the Depiction of Paradise The quest for an earthly paradise and the anticipation of a heavenly one is a drive that has always prevailed in humankind s search for God and redemption from the original sin. The desire for a terrestrial manifestation of paradise, a so called lost origin is predominantly reflected in writers depictions of the fall of man. This can be seen in Milton s Paradise Lost and Lucy Hutchinson s Order and Disorder. Both these epic poems at times magnify the sadness and gravity of the loss of a paradisal home in which Adam and Eve as our fore parents dwelt under God s close guidance and love. The fascination with Eden s bliss is manifested in Adam and Eve s admiration, however it also extends to Satan s various instances of questioning his own actions in the shadow of such beauty. Perhaps crucial to both interpretations of the fall of man is that the knowledge gained from the forbidden fruit is the realization of loss, the sudden true appreciation of the beauty of a paradise that is now lost. On the other hand the promise of redemption is provided through God s mercy in Death, thus allowing for a hope and anticipation of a heavenly paradise. This portrayal of a merciful God in Paradise Lost and Order and Disorder, grows out of man s search for redemption and a desire to be united with God in a heavenly paradise. The reality of reality TV is that it negatively portrays females. Is there no end to the onslaught on the female gender by television? Thriving Generations Of The House Of Medici The Impact of the Thriving Generations of the House of Medici The Renaissance was an essential time period in European history, which occurred roughly between 1300 and 1600 in Florence, Italy. During this epoch, attributes of the Renaissance, such as Classical humanism and an upbringing of political life spread throughout Western Europe. Moreover, out of the 50,000 people in Florence, around 100 families have influenced the Renaissance s attributes; the most notable of these being the Medici family (Fiero 377 378). The government was more interested in customs duties that they may generate from these incoming goods, than in the control and regulation of the arrival and stay of foreigners. The functions of immigration remained under the said bureau until 1937, when it was transferred again as a division under the Bureau of Labor. This was mainly to respond to the arrival of Chinese nationals who owned and operated trade houses, stores, and restaurants in the country. On 22 January 1940, the Second National Assembly of the Philippine Commonwealth enacted the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940 (Commonwealth Act No. 613). It was signed into law by the President of the United States of America on September 3, 1940, creating the Bureau of Immigration under the administrative supervision of the Office of the President. The Nashoba Community was an experimental project of Francis Fanny Wright, initiated to educate and emancipate slaves. It was located in present day Germantown, Tennessee, a Memphis suburb, along the Wolf River. It was a emancipation plan in which no slaveholders would lose money for emancipating slaves. Heidegger s Relationship Between Poetry And Poetry In the words of Heidegger, the poem is a vortex that snatches us away not gradually, but suddenly, and thus we are drawn into a conversation. Understanding of poetry is essential to Heidegger s philosophy. There are two notions, which seem to stand at opposite poles, which are poetry and technology. They seem to be opposed forms of truth. In modern civilization, we see the world through our technology, but there was a time when the truth was seen through poetry. Holderlin (1770 1843) a symbol of the German Romantic Movement had a great impact on Heidegger s poetic thinking. In his various treatises, Heidegger clarifies his intent in studying thought through poetry and to enter into the truth of the poems studied. Heidegger believed that language ... • 46. The Characteristics Of Community Psychology Richard Henry PSY 324E October 14, 2017 A Collective Mind Before we can discuss what community psychology is, we must understand what a community is. We often view a community as a collective or randomized people, some happen to work close by, some happen to like the housing market and decided to raise a family, and some may have been in the same town for their whole lives, feeling no interest to look beyond. What is represented here, is the differences within the individuals. No two people have the same exact story, the same upbringing, the same experience. Often times, your neighbor may be nothing like you, yet you may have similarities. The similarities may come from the way you both think politically, to the teams you root for. (you notice he too, has a 12th man sticker plastered on his back windshield) Community psychology is the collection of individuals, their moralities, their viewpoints on the world and the basis in which you collectively live. For the example of different communities, I ll take Portland, Oregon, my new place of residence, versus where I am originally from, Ocean City, New Jersey. Portland is recognized as one of the more inclusive places in the world, a collection of people who look out for each other , wanting everyone to feel both welcome and equal. We often look at a place as being a general population of similar people, where we assume everyone in Portland just moves here and becomes influenced. But I tend to believe that people live ... Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great Expectations to lead her away from the white world.
