Neil Postman s Exploration Of This Issue
As everyone knows society has many problems, however many do not realize that root of these
problems may stem from the way they are discussed and presented. When a person compares how
information was obtained and current issues were discussed prior to this century they come to find
that the contrast between now and then is so outstanding. It s completely clear why many people
aren t aware of what has been happening. The reason the difference is so profound is because our
discourse has gradually been dumbed down since the beginning of the information era, and people
are treating the serious issues that arise as entertainment. The most powerful culprit being television
, has being accused of causing damage to the people that were raised in the TV era. Neil Postman
s exploration of this issue in his novel written in 1985, Amusing Ourselves to Death, is a crucial
hint of the consequences of being immersed in a culture that is driven by television. Even though it
has been 20 years since the book was published the influx of internet only makes his novel more
and more relevant to today than it was when it was written
Postman s key argument is the comparison of two tremendously different imagined cultures in
literature. The first came from the English novelist, George Orwell s dictatorial society novel,
1984. The other view came from English writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley s novel called
Brave New World. In George Orwell s version people are oppressed from an external force and

F. Scott Fitzgerald
I am a professed literary thief, hot after the best methods of every writer in my generation
(Twentieth century literary Criticisms 158) said a very prominent author during the Jazz Age,
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. He was recognized for writing stories that reflected his personal life.
Fitzgerald wrote his extraordinary pieces after he experienced something even more extraordinary.
The author of the article, F. Scott Fitzgerald , agrees when he says, ...Fitzgerald s most successful
creations derive from his own experiences and social circles, the members of the upper middle class

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the son of
Mary and Edward Fitzgerald ( F. Scott Fitzgerald 516). In an interview Fitzgerald said he was,
...half black Irish and half old American stock with the usual exaggerated ancestral pretensions (
F. Scott Fitzgerald 516). Fitzgerald had 4 siblings and they moved a lot during their childhood (
F. Scott Fitzgerald 516). Fitzgerald said they lived in, a house below the average on a street
above the average ( F. Scott Fitzgerald 516). The author of F. Scott Fitzgerald sums up Fitzgerald
s college life as, entered Princeton at age seventeen. Until he left in October 1917, without a
degree, he skipped classes, failed courses, read contemporary fiction, and wrote prolifically.
During his time at college, Fitzgerald wrote many short stories to local newspapers (Nassau
Literary Magazine, This Side of Paradise) and he wrote lyrics to school musicals, but never
participated due to his grades ( F. Scott Fitzgerald 517). After college Fitzgerald joined the army
and became second lieutenant. During one of his transfers in Alabama, he fell in love with Zelda.
Zelda wanted a more successful partner, so she rejected him. In response to her rejection,

The Athletic Director Of A Budding High School
You are the athletic director of a budding high school. Currently there is a six and a half foot
junior with incredible athletic ability, earning national recognition. Weekly you are receiving phone
calls from newspaper and television reporters, as well as fielding questions from college coaches
and community sponsors. You see the potential in this student, and it leads to recognition, acclaim,
and possibly future financial gain. There is, however, one small problem; the student athlete is
currently failing three of six classes for the semester. As it stands, if the school year finishes
without change in the grades, your future of fame and fortune will be ineligible for the senior
season.
This is situation all too familiar in high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am interested in this topic because of my plan of influence on high school student athletes as an
athletic director. A problem of increasing concern with high school student athletes is preferential
treatment and altering the grades of exceptional athletes. Many problems and scandals are difficult
to identify because of the secrecy surrounding the situation. Grade altering is not one of those
problems. Grade altering stories are readily available in both local and national newspapers.
There is a growing problem where much of a school s popularity and funding stems from athletic
success. Even more, if a school has a student or group of students with great athletic ability, the
school will likely bend some of its rules to maintain the athletes image and eligibility.
In this study I intend to identify common administrative flaws within high schools, and identify a
strategy of grade altering corruption prevention.
All high school teachers and athletic directors should be familiar with the idea of grade altering,
and have a system in place to handle and correct any possible academic corruption. A precautionary
and preventative system can eliminate the possibility of grade altering, student athlete entitlement,
and negative media coverage of the school and athletic department.
Are there measures that can prevent the immoral and unethical practice of grade altering?
High schools do not receive much coverage from the

the battery also underwent development as complementary resources on Smartphones, which

who believe the old myths about the extended battery on a smartphone or any other electronic

Myth: empty the battery before charging it again Statements like this are often times we hear or

Myth: Charging The Battery Overnight Can Shorten Battery Usage This myth is similar to the
calibration, it used to be possible in this way can damage the battery with overcharging , or let
the battery fully charged all the time. On the type of Li ion battery of antiquity, if too long is
plugged in it will be overheating or it could cause an explosion (in some cases). That will
ultimately reduce the capacity of the load and the battery lifespan.
But then again, these days the charger and smartphone is smart enough to prevent this from
happening. Charging too long indeed still can cause degradation on battery life, but with the
technology now, it can be prevented and minimized as much as possible, keep the battery between
20% 80%, with this proven way will extend battery life itself. And the good news is the charge the

Compare And Contrast Essay Good Vs Evil
Good vs. Evil There are numerous things that citizens of this world are afraid of. A huge
example is public speaking. Getting up in front of many peers, friends, advisors, and role models
can intimidate, frighten, or discourage us in many different ways. The fear that others will judge
or think less of us is scary and can be a gigantic blow to our pride. Often times, feelings of anxiety
join the scene, making the situation as terrible as it can possibly be. Many of these feelings that
have been mentioned contribute to the reason why humans like to stay in their comfort zones and
do the things that they have always done, for fearthat people may judge them, or they might fail.
Another common fear that people have is dying. For many religiously active people, this topic is
the least of their worries, but for others, they can t help but worry about what will become of them
once they leave this earth. Will they be remembered for how amazing and confident they were?
Will people feel a rush of relief and happiness because they... Show more content on

During funerals, relatives and close friends of the person who has perished usually speak about
or discuss the things that they accomplished in their lives. They focus on the highs in their life
and the great moments that took place during their peaks. For example, if a teenager died in an
unexpected car accident, their mom would undoubtedly talk about how awesome a child they
were, how blessed they were as a parent, and how much they re going to miss them in the future.
The sins that we have committed in our lives are forgotten and people tend to focus on the bright
sides of our lives. Part of the reason for this is empathy, and the fact that, as humans, we have all
sinned at some point in our lives or another. Nonetheless, it cannot be denied that the deaths of
modern people are remembered in a cheerful or optimistic

Macroeconomics
Warren Smith
4th of April 2014 Abstract For macroeconomics, we were given an assignment to examine and
analyze the causes of the business cycle in foreign economies. We were divided into groups of 6
and were given the instructions to randomly select a continent. Our continent was North America.
We had to choose between Canada and Mexico. The reason why we decided to choose Mexico is
because of its economy trade with the US, their migration flow, the interesting influence on oil
prices worldwide and the impact that the drug cartels have on Mexican politicians. Mexico is
known for being one of the world s most corrupt nations but somehow they still manage to have
one of the best industrializing economies in Latin America. The causes for a country s business
cycle can be either endogenous or exogenous. Throughout this paper, the internal problem of
political corruption will be analyzed and discussed in order to determine Mexico s economic stage.
Introduction Between 175 countries, Mexico is ranked as the 103rd most corrupt nation
worldwide. Corruption has become the cancer of Mexico. Organized crimes and corruption are
linked with each other and cannot operate without one another. There are witnesses who have seen
state police pick up cocaine shipments and delivering them personally to the cartels. This linkage
between cartels and the

Can the refrigeration be considered as an artificial cold person cannot live without? Many
different authors had the ability to write effectively where it might be important and useful
writing skill for the authors to possess. In the beginning, Steven Johnson s who was a British
American, and he had published a book called, How We Got to Now. In the novel, Johnson
presented six part series where it had amazing explored legacies that passed on great ideas. In each
of the chapter titles had six sessions are: Glass, Cold, Sound, Clean, Time, and Light. Johnson had
included many of the famous historical characters such as Thomas Edison, Galileo Galilei, Mark
Zuckerberg, and more. Throughout most of the book, he had quite often brought different type of
inventions into his writing. He liked to first introduce his style of writing by adding interesting
facts and histories, so this way he could reveal his dialog in an effective accomplished for the
readers to understand the writing concepts. One of the unique aspect Johnson s mentioned in the
chapter Cold was on the invention refrigerator. The refrigerator is one of the one history, inventions
that have small stories from each author s styles of writing throughout no certain specific ideas.
Writers have set their individual writing style apart by making it usually which is unique and for
some part the writing can address differently to fit specific content, purpose and audience. From the

Design A Simple Electric Motor
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this project is to design a simple electric motor. This motor can be used for small
scale applications. The objective mainly focuses on describing the principle used inside an electric
motor by designing a miniature of the same and to study various characteristics of an electric motor.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
To design a simple electric motor and understand its working, we need to have knowledge about the
following,
пѓ Electric field and Magnetic field
пѓ Faraday s Law of Electromagnetic Induction
пѓ Fleming s Left hand Thumb rule
пѓ Lorentz Force
пѓ Torque
ELECTRIC FIELD:
The electric field is a vector. The source of electric field is electric charge. The two types of charges
are positive and negative. The electric ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are two poles in a magnet. They are North Pole and South Pole. Unlike electric charges, they
always come in pairs. There are different types of magnetic materials, they are
пѓ Paramagnetic
пѓ Diamagnetic
пѓ Ferromagnetic, etc
The magnetic field exhibits the following properties
пѓ Like charges repel and unlike charges attract
пѓ Force acts along the line joining the charges
The magnetic field are also produced by the moving electric charges. Electric and magnetic fields
are two interrelated fields. FARADAYS LAW OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION:
Faraday s law of electromagnetic induction states that current carrying conductor placed in a
moving magnetic field, induces an electromotive force in any closed circuit, equal to the rate of
change of magnetic flux. The electromotive force is proportional to the number of turns of the coil.
Electromagnetic induction is seen in two ways.
пѓ One is when a magnet is moved near a coil, depending on the movement of the magnet, current
is induced in the coil
пѓ The other way is that when a looped coil is connected to an electric source it induces current in
the adjacent coil due to coupling

R J Reynolds Case
This case study is based on R.J Reynolds (RJR) 1985 financing of the $4.9 billion acquisition of
Nabisco Brands Inc. To finance the acquisition, RJR proposed the issue of a preferred stock of
$1.2 billion with twelve years US domestic notes of the same amount. To analyze the case there
are two major components. First requirement is to examine the financing alternatives available
to the company in order to assess their suitability. Secondly, identify other financing alternatives
that may be suitable for R.J Reynolds. Three financing alternatives are suitable for the company
(Hillier, D., Grinblatt, M., Titman, S. (2011) They include a five year yen/dollar dual, a five
year Euroyen bond, and a five year Eurodollar bond. The viability of these alternatives will be
assessed in the context of maturity concerns, whether the billion dollar piece have a floating rate
or a fixed rate and finally whether the final dollar piece should be issued in US dollars or other
currencies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The borrowings increased the RJR debts issued in 1984 bringing an A debt rating, therefore in
financing the remaining $1 billion the below should be put into consideration: Debt vs. Equity:
RJR is a mature company whose average retained earnings for the last three recent years amounted
to $4.2 billion. The net equity in 1984 stood at $4.5 billion. Therefore this is a clear indication that
the company is in a position to support additional debt in any of the three financing

Personal Narrative-Destructiveness In An Athletic Team
Before the run, we walked. We gathered in our teams, lined up in neat columns on the one

tried to amplify that nervous energy that runs through every bulging artery, every electrified

Midst Of Weakness Essay
God: There in the Midst of Weakness It was my senior year of high school in the small town of
Gardendale, Alabama. This was the year the girls varsity soccer team was expected to go all the
way to the finals, and make a hard run at the state championship title. We had made it to the third
round, and after this game we were heading north to Huntsville, Alabama for the quarter finals.
Except, in an instant, this all changed after one practice, two days before our game, when our
principal showed up with some heartbreaking news. We no longer had a shot at the championship
title because someone on our team had broken the rules; therefore, we had been kicked out of the
playoffs. This filled me with anger, hatred, and resentment towards that one person. I became a
very bitter version of myself until God showed me a new path to walk down in the following
week. My story beings on the Friday night before our first playoff game. My dad asked me to go
to our city soccer fields to get a corner flag for the game tomorrow at the school. When I got to
the fields one of my best friends texts me and says, Hey! Are high school players allowed to play
on teams other than the high school team? I was confused. No they are definitely not, but was
she talking about one of my teammates or someone we were supposed to play against? I storm
out onto the field to see if I know who is breaking such a big rule and my mind is blown when I
see one of my own teammates out on the field playing. So much is running through my mind, Do
I say something to her? Do I tell my coach? What will this do to our chances of playing in the
championship? All these thoughts, yet I stand on the field frozen from anger at the fact that this
person thinks it s okay to break a rule in order to benefit herself. So I did what anyone like me
would do and I confronted her, Do you really think it is okay that you are out here playing when
our high school season is still going on? She stares at me with no emotion on her face, says
absolutely nothing, and just walks away acting as if she had done no wrong. I left the fields that
night with all those questions about what to do still circling about in my mind and some new
thoughts popping up, I am the only

Disregarding the semi tables that display the process of calculations, the first column of my table
depicts the average amount of DDT ingestion for each and every species. Since I knew the
formula to get the said data, I was able to process this column with comparably more ease than the
other ones. The second column depicts the amount of energy for one species under each category.
For example, only one phytoplankton contains 200 kcal within its body. Likewise, that column of
my table depicts the amount of energy that each individual of the species have within their bodies.
The next column, column C, shows the total amount of energy for each and every categories

Disposing of Nuclear Waste
The primary concern when disposing of nuclear waste and cleaning the facilities that produce it
is the duration of half lives of the elements that make up nuclear waste. One example is Uranium
235, which is used widely by nations that have a nuclear weapons program. U 235 has a half life
of 703,800,000 years. This means that U 235 will take over 700 million years for it to decompose
by half. It is estimated that these elements will still be hazardous for ten times their half lives. At
this rate, U 235 will take around 7 billion years for it to become non threatening to humans. It
should be noted that seasons, temperature, or any known solvents will not affect the rate of decay.
During the Cold War, very little attention was paid to the high volume of radioactive waste
generated and even less to its effects on the environment. U 235 is an extreme example, we still
have to contend with low level radioactive waste produced daily by Industry and Medical facilities.
Some of the effects on the environment are; groundwater contamination, soil contamination, buried
soil and water containing waste, and underground disposal facilities storing large volumes of
hazardous, radioactive waste. One such facility was the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository
,
which was designated in 1987 by the NWPA Amendments, and located on federal land adjacent to
the Nevada Test Site (NTS) in Nye County, Nevada some 80 miles Northwest of Las Vegas,
Nevada. Congress approved the site in 2002,

European Exploration Motivation
European Exploration Motivations: Gold, God, and Glory Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries,
European exploration and expansion thrived. Portugal led the way in this movement of
exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices
such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting edge naval academies. Various European countries,
including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal s example by utilizing their progressive
naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually
the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by
explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and
Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean,
and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to
complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political
dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of
Exploration. The accumulation of wealth for individuals as well as nations, propelled European
Exploration. For instance, Hernando Cortes travelled to Central America with a key motivation of
obtaining gold. This can be exemplified in The Dispatches of Hernando Cortes to Emperor
Charles V, 1519 1521, I and my companions suffer from a disease of the heart which can only

margins, on custom built software through intermediaries. Each firm thrives on minimum
latency of flash orders of the software to move in and out of markets. In fact, in Melbourne, a
large FX fund has been using High Frequency Trading in FX, successfully for well over a
decade. Insight into High Frequency Trading in FX A recent by BIS reflects the role of HFT in
FX marketplaces. The report says that, there is an increasing use of HFT in FX market in the
past few years as there is greater infrastructure available for electronic trading. It was found that,
in the FX market, HFT was active in most liquid currency markets and prevalent among
dominant currencies. It relied on operating high volume but very small orders, maintained low
margins along with low latency. This meant that all orders were placed and withdrawn in a
matter of a few milliseconds. Specific algorithms, which analyzed the market, were used to
perform these strategies. Another noticeable trend was that most traders adopted short risk
holding periods of less than five seconds for greater efficiency. The report predicts that HFT will
spread to currencies, which are traded in lesser volumes as well and will likely be used in
currency markets of emerging economies. HFT is found to have a profound impact in the FX market

The problem itself is not one that can be fixed in a few nights, what has been done to the spheres
is almost irreversible with a few exceptions. The severity of this problem isn t one that can
completely alter the way we live but at the same time every action has an equal opposite
reaction. Due to the frequency of the emissions the spheres can be greatly impacted. Many
people have been affected by these emissions and most of the illnesses given to these people are
very damaging or terminal. On average every 3 7 years a building is repainted and depending on
the size of the building many VOCs are released. As well as the frequent times the inside of the
buildings are repainted and just creating artwork. Also VOC emissions are two to five times higher
indoors than outdoors which just increase the amount released in the end. All of this contributes to
the severity of this problem on the soul fact that paint emission happen so frequently.

Another downfall to buying the VOC free paint was there wasn t as many color options because
VOC free paint is not as popular as regular paint so this made my project more challenging in
finding the right colors and being able to mix them. Whereas if it was just regular acrylic paint I
would be able to buy just the regular colors without having to mix as much as the VOC free

Female Pirates
Female Pirates Kristina A. Paxton (Shaarda) Excelsior College Women have been held to have
particular power over the sea. There is an ancient superstition that women are not good for ships.
The contradiction between woman as sea power and woman as a sea jinx is hard to understand.
Women pirates however rarely brought bad luck to a ship, they were actually very good luck,
and their loss to a ship often brought an end to that ships sailing days. The women that sailed the
seas came from all walks of life; there were royals such as Queen Teuta of Illyria who sailed in the
200 s B.C., as well as the Irish seafaring clanswoman, Grace O Malley, who was practically royalty
in that culture in the 1500 s. There were also illegitimate daughters... Show more content on

After some time sailing she also served as a soldier in both infantry and cavalry units, very often
proving braver and more courageous than her fellow soldiers. While serving as a soldier she fell
in love with one of her comrades, and found a way to let him know she was a woman, and
shortly thereafter they married. After they were married, Mary and her new husband left the
service and set up a restaurant where their former comrades could come and eat. However, not
long after they opened the restaurant Mary s husband died and the war ended, leaving Mary
with no spouse, and no income since the soldiers no longer came to eat at the restaurant. She
gave up her restaurant and went back into sailing. Eventually the ship she was on sailed to the
West Indies where it was captured by pirates, whom she eventually joined. Initially Mary Read

Taking a Look at the Management Process
An organizations goals and objectives can be accomplished through leadership. Leadership refers to
inspire people to contribute and perform well in the management. It is a role of management and
leading others towards the achievement of the common goals (Channappa, 2012). Daft (2012)
reported that In today s world, industries, technologies, economies, governments, and societies are
in constant flux, and managers are responsible for helping their organizations navigate through the
unpredictable with flexibility and innovation (p. 4). A good manager is needed in every management
because he or she is the one who determine the successes and future of the management (Daft,
2012). He or she is also the one to persevere unremittingly in facing the failure. As elaborated by
Griffin Ebert (1996), there are four vital steps in the management process which are planning,
organizing, leading and controlling (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1). The first step in the
management process is planning. The process starts with managers setting the objectives and
identifying the goals to ensure that mission is achieved (Daft, 2012). Firstly, an overall plan is
developed by managers to ensure that the management runs smoothly and effectively in long term
(Daft, 2012). The future of an organization to be heading and how to achieve them is determined
by the manager (Daft, 2012). The second step in the planning is the managers analyze the risks
facing their organization in terms of

Platonic Love In Plato s Symposium
Plato s Symposium attempts to define the eclectic theory of love, a theory that is often believed to
be the universal principle that guides mankind s actions. Plato introduces several narratives in the
form of a dialogue that seek to characterize this multifaceted theory of Eros. The meaning of love
naturally varies in each narrative. Yet, in this dialogue of love, Platopresents a metaphysical
approach to understanding the ambiguous meaning of love. Ultimately, Plato values the perennial
quest for knowledge above all else. In Symposium, Platonic love is exhibited in the relationship
between virtue and desire, as expressed in Diotima s ladder. Desire is the vehicle, or the means to
an end. The six Athenians ultimately present different... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The older man will exchange his knowledge and virtue to the younger man for the fulfillment of
the older man s sexual desires. Like Plato, Pausanias believes that the highest maxim in the
world to strive for is virtue: For he too has demonstrated something about himself: that he is the
sort of person who will do anything for the sake of virtue and what could be more honorable that
that? It follows, therefore, that giving in to your lover for virtue s sake is honorable, what ever
the outcome. (185B) Yet, Plato, through Socrates and Diotima, differs from Pausanias in the
way in which virtue is obtained. For Pausanias, the relationship between desire and virtue
requires favors to be exchanged for both bodily and mindful stimulation. Since virtue is the
desired outcome for the young man, he must submit to the authority of the older man by
basically any means necessary, namely through sexual favors. Homosexuality appears to be a
common beginning for the quest of virtue and philosophy, but by what means necessary to
obtain these ends? Plato presents Pausanias s theory to be only partially correct, as he ultimately
extols a love that requires no sexual love. In Pausanias s theory of love, sexual love is necessary to
fulfill the both needs. Plato s ideal form of love is fully expressed in the concept of Diotima s ladder.
Platonic love only partially identifies with Pausanias s theory. Pausanias s speech and the speeches

The essay States, by Edward Said, describes the trouble for Palestinians to find their identity due to
the loss of their homeland. He also describes the situation of the Palestinians and the isolation that
they feel through photographs that he had taken. Said has many different pictures throughout this
essay and each of them play a part in supporting the main point of this essay. Said believes that,
without a homeland, the Palestinians cannot have an identity and the Palestinians should not be
content with being exiles forever. So the purpose of the pictures is to support and further strengthen
this idea. The photographer wants the viewer to understand the struggle that the Palestinians are

to show how people struggle, these people once lived in just a tent in extreme conditions. He
also chose this to show to the reader that this exile treatment happened to everyone no matter
who you are and what your status is. The third image also supports the notion that no matter

The midterm is coming up fast, and I am excited that I have already completed two of the four
steps for memorizing in Experience Psychology. The first two steps, organizing and encoding, I
have completed as we moved through each session. Encoding early on is an important step
because I was able to introduce each concept to my brain one by one as it was learned, rather
than cramming it all in at once. That leaves me with two steps to complete before I can complete
my test: Rehearsing and Retrieving. In order to rehearse, or practice, the information I have
learned I first must create the right environment. Where I am studying makes a large impact on
how well I will take in the information (Silver, 2008). I know that I work best studying off of
paper (not a computer screen), being somewhere comfortable, and that having a familiar sound
like a song I know by heart, or a TV show I ve seen 20 times helps me to block out noise without

Peter Pan Is A Subversive For Children s Book
Children s literature is an effective teaching tool for children but also a way for children to escape
their daily lives through fantasy. Didactic material can be used to teach life lessons, manners and
morals where subversive and fantasy genres can allow children to release from daily expectations
and allows an outlet for their large imaginations. I argue that Peter Panby J.M. Barrie is both
didactic and subversive. It is subversive in the sense that it is whimsical and entertaining. This is
proven in the Fanatical style of Barrie with children flying, fighting pirates and never having to
grow up if they choose to stay in Neverland, the place where grown ups aren t allowed. However,
the text is also didactic because it teaches the lesson of fairness and gender roles of the time. In
total both of these elements make Barrie s Peter Pan an exceptional children s book that enables
children to be entertained and learn values of fairness and societal roles of the publication time.
Peter Pan is subversive in many elements, from flying, dogs that are caretakers, magical places,
fairies made from laughter and the idea that adults are forbidden. The text takes the children to
Neverland where there are no adults and you never have to grow up. In the child s eye of then
and now adult life is mundane and structured. To quote Alison Lurie s A Child s Garden of

Since the town I was in was in a very rural area of the country, on the northern most point, near
the border of Spain, whatever meats, fruits and vegetables I ate were freshly grown or raised on
local farms. I had a first hand experience with this when I went to my grandmother s very old
friend s house. While I was there, I saw my first freshly prepared chicken with the head,
feathers, and feet removed in front of my eyes. Even though this seemed like a gory and almost
disgusting thing to me at the time, I later found out, in the film Food Inc., that the ways animals
are treated in this country are much worse than what I saw that day. Nonetheless, the freshness
of ingredients in any cooking is always a plus, and this made better by being at the table with
my family and friends. From having spent these few hours with my relatives in Portugal, I was
able to come away knowing great tasting food and beautiful, and at times gory, memories. Quite
honestly, I ve never had better tasting chicken. The Portuguese culture, which I had already grown

In 2013, while 8 percent of all federal crime charges were dismissed... more than 97 percent of
the remainder were resolved through plea bargains, and fewer than 3 percent went to trial. 3 It was
the goal at our country s founding that almost all citizens accused of a crime have a fair and
impartial jury trial to decide the innocence or guilt of the accused, and we know where and why
that changed and the effect it has on the system and government but what about the citizens and
society? What about the people the very system is meant to protect and serve? Despite the
advantages plea bargaining gives to the defendant it s very essence is assuming that the defendant
is guilty, so what if they re not? It s not all that uncommon to get the wrong guy when searching

Procrastination may negatively impact professional advancement and general well being, yet to our
knowledge, the relationship with sleep quality has not been investigated. Poor sleep impacts
physical and emotional health, underscoring the importance of addressing this potential outcome. It
was hypothesized that procrastination will be associated with subjective sleep difficulties, an
association mediated by ruminative cognitions. 598 respondents (154 men: Mage = 25.6 В± 3.8;
444 women Mage = 24.8 В± 3.3) completed online questionnaires regarding procrastination, sleep
disturbances, rumination, emotional state, and chronotype. A structural equation model approach
was used for model testing. Results demonstrated that procrastination positively correlated with
sleep disturbance, a link moderated by chronotype, such that self identified Morning Types reported
lower procrastination, fewer sleep disturbances, and the two measures did not correlate. Among
Intermediate and Evening Types the relationship between procrastination and sleep was mediated
by rumination and negative mood. These findings suggest that addressing the impact on sleep

How The Weight Of Weight Control

How To Keep It Off and Profit
Many people struggle with weight control and sometimes they actually managed to lose their
planned weight amount. There is however, a great problem among a vast majority of Americans
who lose weight. They lose the weight, but can t seem to keep it off. As a result of this many
Americans are caught in a cycle upon which they rapidly gain and lose weight until eventually
they abandoned their diet all together. With this in mind, how do we break the cycle and
manage to make sure that the weight that comes off stays off? Before answering how to keep
the weight off, a person must consider why does the weight come back? There are multiple
factors working against dieters, both beginning their diet and after they reached their goal and
now work to maintain. When put into categories, a dieter could see the factors like this: there is
the physical factor, where it is your body s biology, age, and even genetic makeup. Mental factor,
your attitude, habits, and even self esteem along with confidence can have an effect on you.
These are essentially why it is hard to even start a diet or an exercise program to lose weight, let
alone maintain one after a person reaches their goal. The body s chemicals and reactions contribute
to how the body physically slows the progress of weight loss. From ancient times the human body
was designed to store energy as efficiently as possible to increase our chances of

Competitors in the industry can wreak havoc on the bottom line for a company. With rivals, a price

It is believed that Canada was in violation of the human rights when they forced the aboriginals to
get assimilated into a Eurocentric society. There were instances of children being forced from
homes into Christian schools. This was violation of human rights ( Asch 98). Different laws like the
Indian Act and other treaties played an outstanding role in shaping Aboriginal relationship in
Canada. The Indian Act led to a huge conflict of interest following its effect on the Indians living in
Canada during its implementation. The Indian Act was a mechanism that strengthened the eviction
of Indians ad also a means of displacing Indians from their tribal lands. On the onset of the 19th
Century, land hungry Canadian settlers clustered in the coastal south of Canada and slowly moved
into the neighboring states. Since most of the tribes occupying that area were the Indians, the
Canadian settlers petitioned the Canadian government to remove them as they perceived them as
an obstacle to expansion towards the west. The rationale for the Indian Act was that the southeast
Indian tribes had no attachment to any particular land. However, this rationale ignored the fact the
Indian tribes had vast crops of corn and lived in settlements. Those who benefited from the Indian
Act are the Canadian settlers who had immense hunger for Indian land. The Canadian Settler lured
the Indian tribes into signing the treaty by guaranteeing them peace and integrity

College Is Not For Everyone
College Is Not for Everyone
Joseph G. Valencia
Hudson County Community College
April 24, 2015 Bibliography with Summary
Many people believe that education is the key to success. Hoping that if people finished college,
they will land a good and stable job. Precisely, college degree has a huge positive impact for most
people because employers will look at employees education and experience in their resumes to
exceed their expectations. However, college is ineffective to some people yet many of them
become successful in life. Typical example is the governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker who was re
elected twice from 2010 and 2014. He deliberated the top tier potential presidential candidate
despite not having college degree (Koplowitz, 2014). Furthermore, he is currently using his life
experience and ability to take advantage in the campaign. Talent, skill, and intellect are among the
most important characteristics of individuals to become successful. Moreover, many young people
join the military after high school to serve the country and save up money for future references
such as going back to school or starting it as a career. Therefore, it is very significant for
everyone if college is really for them or not because college can cost highly which may not exceed
their expectations. Providentially, some alternative ways that people may apply to become
successful in life besides going to college.

Comparison Of The Human Rights Act 1998 And Tort Law
The Human Rights Act 1998 and Tort Law are seen to be together in overlapping ways as
François du Bois explains. In this essay we will begin by looking at the introduction of the
Human Rights Act, and the claims in negligence against public authorities. Then we will look at the
different views as to the remedies, whether Tort law and the Human RightsAct, should be used
together and developed together, or should be used separately in a claim in negligenceagainst a
public authority.
The introduction of the Human Rights Act 1998, as Oliphant and Lunney describes it creates a
new statutory remedy against public authorities for violating of the specified Convention rights .
Section 7 of the act requires that any individual that brings a claim against public authorities
must be a victim. A victim under the Human Rights Act refers to the person who could bring a
case under the ECHR. Victims must be directly affected or be at risk of being directly affected by
the act in questions. Victims can include...relatives of the victim where a complaint is made about
death. . An example of this would be the case of Rabone v Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust in
which Melanie had in the past attempted to commit suicide on several occasions. After the most
recent attempt she was admitted to the hospital where they observed and tested her. Two days
after, she was released for two days home visit despite her tests indicating her being at high risk of
attempting suicide again, which is

Denise Mann is a freelance health writer in New York. Her articles regularly appear in WebMD,
health.com, cnn.com, Arthritis Today magazine, American Profile magazine and special sections
of the Wall Street Journal. In this article, Mann explained the genetic factors that lead to
psychopathy in serial killers. She also examined the abuse factor in developing a serial killer. Mann
used BTK as an example of a psychopath and explained how his psychopathy lead him to become a
serial killer, which helped me relate Dennis Rader, BTK, to a serial killer who developed from
psychopath factors, such as traits they display.

Background of Cigarette Litigation
Background Cigarette Litigation At the heart of the paradigm of societal law, tobacco and
tobacco related products remain a controversial issue. Globally, about 33% of adults use some
type of tobacco daily, even though it likely has a strong effect on the deaths of over 5 million per
year. In developing countries, largely due to stricter laws and bans on advertising, smokinghas
leveled off however, in developing countries the number of active smokers has risen each year
over the past two decades ( TobaccoFacts, n.d.). The industry itself is very competitive, yet highly
profitable and able to divert huge amounts of revenue to defend any potential litigation. The
tobacco industry is dominated by a few large firms; price competition may also be restrained,
either by outright collusion, or more commonly through parallelism of pricing decisions (See:
Mackay, 2006; Tobacco The Industry Perspective, 2009). The intense advertising efforts of the
tobacco industry lead to strong brand awareness and subsequently to a highly differentiated product
that can demand a higher price than would be the case if the products were indistinguishable
(Glantz, 1998). Additionally the tobacco industry s revenues are highly consistent and stable,
generally unaffected from booms or busts in the economy. Prior to 1950, and amazingly, the
tobacco companies had no serious enemies even doctor s at times recommended cigarettes as a
way to relax. After 1950, though, some of the early studies

Bostongal Valley Mission Command
The Korengal valley Afghanistan was deemed the deadliest place on earth. Second Platoon and
Captain Dan Kearney of B Company, 2/503 Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade spent 15
months fighting a relentless Taliban insurgency within that valley. The overall mission was to
clear the valley of insurgency and gain the trust of the local people. Shortly after arriving, Captain
Kearney established an observation post named Restrepo on the high ground near his combat out
post in the Korengal Valley. From 2007 until 2008 second Platoon made some gains and loss
several soldiers throughout the deployment. The outpost was eventually retrograded in April of
2010 because of the actions within the valley which leaders decided was not a sound strategic option

From a mission command standpoint, there were missteps and Captain Dan Kearney along with
2nd Platoon displayed good mission command by his ability to direct his troops, build his
understanding of the area of operations but fell short in visualizing the battle space with actions
that prevented the populace from fully cooperating. Captain Kearney s immediate Mission
Command Philosophy was to stop the daily fire fights by staying aggressive with the enemy and
engaging the local elders to gains their trust. He used his close air support and artillery to allow
some freedom of maneuver and attended weekly meetings with the village elders convey his
commander s intent. The three main components of Mission Command used were his personnel,
information systems, and processes and procedures. The latter of which helped him gain a true
understanding of the situation. The original plan was to provide enough security and stability to
allow the construction of a paved road for easy passage to the south of their location. With the
weekly shuras showing no signs of progress and the local s willingness to accept Taliban rule, the

Patient Physician Attitude and behavior associated with Direct to Consumer (DTC) promotion of
Prescription/OTC medications
RESEARCH PURPOSE: One of the triumphs of the biomedical revolution of the past 30 years is
the development of a large and growing pharmacopeia of therapeutic drugs. Used appropriately,
these drugs enhance patient s quality of life, improve functional capacity and sometimes extend life.
However in the aggregate, prescription drugs represent a substantial health care expenditure. To
ensure steady demand for their products, pharmaceutical manufacturers have traditionally deployed
large armies of sales representatives marketing their ways to physician (1). Lately the
pharmaceutical industry had altered its marketing strategy by increasing its reliance on direct to
consumer (DTC) advertising. The amount to money spent on DTC advertising has risen from 600
million to 8 billion in the last decade (2). Almost 145 million U.S. adults look up for health
information online in 2008. Views on DTC ads (DTCA) center on three effects: cost,
communication, and health of the public. Critics claim that DTCA raises health care costs by
stimulating consumers to demand newer, more expensive drugs, often with high profit margins (3,
4). The pharmaceutical industry rejects arguments that DTCA is inflationary, and while not
denying the profit motive, it points out that DTCA serves a patient education function. The industry
s argument is that patients are highly motivated to

  • 2. Neil Postman s Exploration Of This Issue As everyone knows society has many problems, however many do not realize that root of these problems may stem from the way they are discussed and presented. When a person compares how information was obtained and current issues were discussed prior to this century they come to find that the contrast between now and then is so outstanding. It s completely clear why many people aren t aware of what has been happening. The reason the difference is so profound is because our discourse has gradually been dumbed down since the beginning of the information era, and people are treating the serious issues that arise as entertainment. The most powerful culprit being television , has being accused of causing damage to the people that were raised in the TV era. Neil Postman s exploration of this issue in his novel written in 1985, Amusing Ourselves to Death, is a crucial hint of the consequences of being immersed in a culture that is driven by television. Even though it has been 20 years since the book was published the influx of internet only makes his novel more and more relevant to today than it was when it was written Postman s key argument is the comparison of two tremendously different imagined cultures in literature. The first came from the English novelist, George Orwell s dictatorial society novel, 1984. The other view came from English writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley s novel called Brave New World. In George Orwell s version people are oppressed from an external force and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am interested in this topic because of my plan of influence on high school student athletes as an athletic director. A problem of increasing concern with high school student athletes is preferential treatment and altering the grades of exceptional athletes. Many problems and scandals are difficult to identify because of the secrecy surrounding the situation. Grade altering is not one of those problems. Grade altering stories are readily available in both local and national newspapers. There is a growing problem where much of a school s popularity and funding stems from athletic success. Even more, if a school has a student or group of students with great athletic ability, the school will likely bend some of its rules to maintain the athletes image and eligibility. In this study I intend to identify common administrative flaws within high schools, and identify a strategy of grade altering corruption prevention. All high school teachers and athletic directors should be familiar with the idea of grade altering, and have a system in place to handle and correct any possible academic corruption. A precautionary and preventative system can eliminate the possibility of grade altering, student athlete entitlement, and negative media coverage of the school and athletic department. Are there measures that can prevent the immoral and unethical practice of grade altering? High schools do not receive much coverage from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Getting up in front of many peers, friends, advisors, and role models can intimidate, frighten, or discourage us in many different ways. The fear that others will judge or think less of us is scary and can be a gigantic blow to our pride. Often times, feelings of anxiety join the scene, making the situation as terrible as it can possibly be. Many of these feelings that have been mentioned contribute to the reason why humans like to stay in their comfort zones and do the things that they have always done, for fearthat people may judge them, or they might fail. Another common fear that people have is dying. Analyzing Political Corruption and its Effects on the Mexican Economy Gyadisha Sulvaran Palm Beach State College Macroeconomics Warren Smith 4th of April 2014 Abstract For macroeconomics, we were given an assignment to examine and analyze the causes of the business cycle in foreign economies. We were divided into groups of 6 and were given the instructions to randomly select a continent. Our continent was North America. We had to choose between Canada and Mexico. The reason why we decided to choose Mexico is because of its economy trade with the US, their migration flow, the interesting influence on oil prices worldwide and the impact that the drug cartels have on Mexican politicians. Mexico is known for being one of the world s most corrupt nations but somehow they still manage to have one of the best industrializing economies in Latin America. The causes for a country s business cycle can be either endogenous or exogenous. Throughout this paper, the internal problem of political corruption will be analyzed and discussed in order to determine Mexico s economic stage. Introduction Between 175 countries, Mexico is ranked as the 103rd most corrupt nation worldwide. Corruption has become the cancer of Mexico. Organized crimes and corruption are linked with each other and cannot operate without one another. This was the year the girls varsity soccer team was expected to go all the way to the finals, and make a hard run at the state championship title. We had made it to the third round, and after this game we were heading north to Huntsville, Alabama for the quarter finals. Except, in an instant, this all changed after one practice, two days before our game, when our principal showed up with some heartbreaking news. We no longer had a shot at the championship title because someone on our team had broken the rules; therefore, we had been kicked out of the playoffs. This filled me with anger, hatred, and resentment towards that one person. I became a very bitter version of myself until God showed me a new path to walk down in the following week. My story beings on the Friday night before our first playoff game. My dad asked me to go to our city soccer fields to get a corner flag for the game tomorrow at the school. When I got to the fields one of my best friends texts me and says, Hey! Are high school players allowed to play on teams other than the high school team? I was confused. No they are definitely not, but was she talking about one of my teammates or someone we were supposed to play against? I storm out onto the field to see if I know who is breaking such a big rule and my mind is blown when I see one of my own teammates out on the field playing. So much is running through my mind, Do I say something to her? Do I tell my coach? What will this do to our chances of playing in the championship? All these thoughts, yet I stand on the field frozen from anger at the fact that this person thinks it s okay to break a rule in order to benefit herself. So I did what anyone like me would do and I confronted her, Do you really think it is okay that you are out here playing when our high school season is still going on? • 16. Disposing of Nuclear Waste The primary concern when disposing of nuclear waste and cleaning the facilities that produce it is the duration of half lives of the elements that make up nuclear waste. One example is Uranium 235, which is used widely by nations that have a nuclear weapons program. U 235 has a half life of 703,800,000 years. This means that U 235 will take over 700 million years for it to decompose by half. It is estimated that these elements will still be hazardous for ten times their half lives. At this rate, U 235 will take around 7 billion years for it to become non threatening to humans. It should be noted that seasons, temperature, or any known solvents will not affect the rate of decay. During the Cold War, very little attention was paid to the high volume of radioactive waste generated and even less to its effects on the environment. U 235 is an extreme example, we still have to contend with low level radioactive waste produced daily by Industry and Medical facilities. Some of the effects on the environment are; groundwater contamination, soil contamination, buried soil and water containing waste, and underground disposal facilities storing large volumes of hazardous, radioactive waste. One such facility was the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository , which was designated in 1987 by the NWPA Amendments, and located on federal land adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) in Nye County, Nevada some 80 miles Northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. Portugal led the way in this movement of exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting edge naval academies. Various European countries, including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal s example by utilizing their progressive naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of Exploration. The accumulation of wealth for individuals as well as nations, propelled European Exploration. For instance, Hernando Cortes travelled to Central America with a key motivation of obtaining gold. Insight into High Frequency Trading in FX A recent by BIS reflects the role of HFT in FX marketplaces. The report says that, there is an increasing use of HFT in FX market in the past few years as there is greater infrastructure available for electronic trading. It was found that, in the FX market, HFT was active in most liquid currency markets and prevalent among dominant currencies. It relied on operating high volume but very small orders, maintained low margins along with low latency. This meant that all orders were placed and withdrawn in a matter of a few milliseconds. Specific algorithms, which analyzed the market, were used to perform these strategies. Another noticeable trend was that most traders adopted short risk holding periods of less than five seconds for greater efficiency. The report predicts that HFT will spread to currencies, which are traded in lesser volumes as well and will likely be used in currency markets of emerging economies. The severity of this problem isn t one that can completely alter the way we live but at the same time every action has an equal opposite reaction. Due to the frequency of the emissions the spheres can be greatly impacted. Many people have been affected by these emissions and most of the illnesses given to these people are very damaging or terminal. The women that sailed the seas came from all walks of life; there were royals such as Queen Teuta of Illyria who sailed in the 200 s B.C., as well as the Irish seafaring clanswoman, Grace O Malley, who was practically royalty in that culture in the 1500 s. • 25. Taking a Look at the Management Process An organizations goals and objectives can be accomplished through leadership. Leadership refers to inspire people to contribute and perform well in the management. It is a role of management and leading others towards the achievement of the common goals (Channappa, 2012). Daft (2012) reported that In today s world, industries, technologies, economies, governments, and societies are in constant flux, and managers are responsible for helping their organizations navigate through the unpredictable with flexibility and innovation (p. 4). A good manager is needed in every management because he or she is the one who determine the successes and future of the management (Daft, 2012). He or she is also the one to persevere unremittingly in facing the failure. As elaborated by Griffin Ebert (1996), there are four vital steps in the management process which are planning, organizing, leading and controlling (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1). The first step in the management process is planning. The process starts with managers setting the objectives and identifying the goals to ensure that mission is achieved (Daft, 2012). Firstly, an overall plan is developed by managers to ensure that the management runs smoothly and effectively in long term (Daft, 2012). The future of an organization to be heading and how to achieve them is determined by the manager (Daft, 2012). The second step in the planning is the managers analyze the risks facing their organization in terms of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Platonic Love In Plato s Symposium Plato s Symposium attempts to define the eclectic theory of love, a theory that is often believed to be the universal principle that guides mankind s actions. Plato introduces several narratives in the form of a dialogue that seek to characterize this multifaceted theory of Eros. The meaning of love naturally varies in each narrative. Yet, in this dialogue of love, Platopresents a metaphysical approach to understanding the ambiguous meaning of love. Ultimately, Plato values the perennial quest for knowledge above all else. In Symposium, Platonic love is exhibited in the relationship between virtue and desire, as expressed in Diotima s ladder. Desire is the vehicle, or the means to an end. The older man will exchange his knowledge and virtue to the younger man for the fulfillment of the older man s sexual desires. Like Plato, Pausanias believes that the highest maxim in the world to strive for is virtue: For he too has demonstrated something about himself: that he is the sort of person who will do anything for the sake of virtue and what could be more honorable that that? It follows, therefore, that giving in to your lover for virtue s sake is honorable, what ever the outcome. (185B) Yet, Plato, through Socrates and Diotima, differs from Pausanias in the way in which virtue is obtained. For Pausanias, the relationship between desire and virtue requires favors to be exchanged for both bodily and mindful stimulation. Since virtue is the desired outcome for the young man, he must submit to the authority of the older man by basically any means necessary, namely through sexual favors. Homosexuality appears to be a common beginning for the quest of virtue and philosophy, but by what means necessary to obtain these ends? Plato presents Pausanias s theory to be only partially correct, as he ultimately extols a love that requires no sexual love. In Pausanias s theory of love, sexual love is necessary to fulfill the both needs. Plato s ideal form of love is fully expressed in the concept of Diotima s ladder. Platonic love only partially identifies with Pausanias s theory. Pausanias s speech and the speeches of the rest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Didactic material can be used to teach life lessons, manners and morals where subversive and fantasy genres can allow children to release from daily expectations and allows an outlet for their large imaginations. I argue that Peter Panby J.M. Barrie is both didactic and subversive. It is subversive in the sense that it is whimsical and entertaining. This is proven in the Fanatical style of Barrie with children flying, fighting pirates and never having to grow up if they choose to stay in Neverland, the place where grown ups aren t allowed. However, the text is also didactic because it teaches the lesson of fairness and gender roles of the time. In total both of these elements make Barrie s Peter Pan an exceptional children s book that enables children to be entertained and learn values of fairness and societal roles of the publication time. Peter Pan is subversive in many elements, from flying, dogs that are caretakers, magical places, fairies made from laughter and the idea that adults are forbidden. The text takes the children to Neverland where there are no adults and you never have to grow up. In the child s eye of then and now adult life is mundane and structured. While I was there, I saw my first freshly prepared chicken with the head, feathers, and feet removed in front of my eyes. Procrastination may negatively impact professional advancement and general well being, yet to our knowledge, the relationship with sleep quality has not been investigated. Poor sleep impacts physical and emotional health, underscoring the importance of addressing this potential outcome. It was hypothesized that procrastination will be associated with subjective sleep difficulties, an association mediated by ruminative cognitions. 598 respondents (154 men: Mage = 25.6 В± 3.8; 444 women Mage = 24.8 В± 3.3) completed online questionnaires regarding procrastination, sleep disturbances, rumination, emotional state, and chronotype. A structural equation model approach was used for model testing. Results demonstrated that procrastination positively correlated with sleep disturbance, a link moderated by chronotype, such that self identified Morning Types reported lower procrastination, fewer sleep disturbances, and the two measures did not correlate. Among Intermediate and Evening Types the relationship between procrastination and sleep was mediated by rumination and negative mood. These findings suggest that addressing the impact on sleep should be one of the targets of interventions for treating procrastination. 1. As a result of this many Americans are caught in a cycle upon which they rapidly gain and lose weight until eventually they abandoned their diet all together. With this in mind, how do we break the cycle and manage to make sure that the weight that comes off stays off? Before answering how to keep the weight off, a person must consider why does the weight come back? There are multiple factors working against dieters, both beginning their diet and after they reached their goal and now work to maintain. When put into categories, a dieter could see the factors like this: there is the physical factor, where it is your body s biology, age, and even genetic makeup. Mental factor, your attitude, habits, and even self esteem along with confidence can have an effect on you. These are essentially why it is hard to even start a diet or an exercise program to lose weight, let alone maintain one after a person reaches their goal. On the onset of the 19th Century, land hungry Canadian settlers clustered in the coastal south of Canada and slowly moved into the neighboring states. Since most of the tribes occupying that area were the Indians, the Canadian settlers petitioned the Canadian government to remove them as they perceived them as an obstacle to expansion towards the west. In this essay we will begin by looking at the introduction of the Human Rights Act, and the claims in negligence against public authorities. Then we will look at the different views as to the remedies, whether Tort law and the Human RightsAct, should be used together and developed together, or should be used separately in a claim in negligenceagainst a public authority. The introduction of the Human Rights Act 1998, as Oliphant and Lunney describes it creates a new statutory remedy against public authorities for violating of the specified Convention rights . Section 7 of the act requires that any individual that brings a claim against public authorities must be a victim. A victim under the Human Rights Act refers to the person who could bring a case under the ECHR. Victims must be directly affected or be at risk of being directly affected by the act in questions. • 45. Background of Cigarette Litigation Background Cigarette Litigation At the heart of the paradigm of societal law, tobacco and tobacco related products remain a controversial issue. Globally, about 33% of adults use some type of tobacco daily, even though it likely has a strong effect on the deaths of over 5 million per year. In developing countries, largely due to stricter laws and bans on advertising, smokinghas leveled off however, in developing countries the number of active smokers has risen each year over the past two decades ( TobaccoFacts, n.d.). The industry itself is very competitive, yet highly profitable and able to divert huge amounts of revenue to defend any potential litigation. The tobacco industry is dominated by a few large firms; price competition may also be restrained, either by outright collusion, or more commonly through parallelism of pricing decisions (See: Mackay, 2006; Tobacco The Industry Perspective, 2009). The intense advertising efforts of the tobacco industry lead to strong brand awareness and subsequently to a highly differentiated product that can demand a higher price than would be the case if the products were indistinguishable (Glantz, 1998). Additionally the tobacco industry s revenues are highly consistent and stable, generally unaffected from booms or busts in the economy. Prior to 1950, and amazingly, the tobacco companies had no serious enemies even doctor s at times recommended cigarettes as a way to relax. After 1950, though, some of the early studies ... Patient Physician Attitude and behavior associated with Direct to Consumer (DTC) promotion of Prescription/OTC medications RESEARCH PURPOSE: One of the triumphs of the biomedical revolution of the past 30 years is the development of a large and growing pharmacopeia of therapeutic drugs. Used appropriately, these drugs enhance patient s quality of life, improve functional capacity and sometimes extend life. However in the aggregate, prescription drugs represent a substantial health care expenditure. To ensure steady demand for their products, pharmaceutical manufacturers have traditionally deployed large armies of sales representatives marketing their ways to physician (1). Lately the pharmaceutical industry had altered its marketing strategy by increasing its reliance on direct to consumer (DTC) advertising. The amount to money spent on DTC advertising has risen from 600 million to 8 billion in the last decade (2). Almost 145 million U.S. adults look up for health information online in 2008. Views on DTC ads (DTCA) center on three effects: cost, communication, and health of the public. Critics claim that DTCA raises health care costs by stimulating consumers to demand newer, more expensive drugs, often with high profit margins (3, 4). The pharmaceutical industry rejects arguments that DTCA is inflationary, and while not denying the profit motive, it points out that DTCA serves a patient education function. The industry s argument is that patients are highly motivated to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
