The Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act
A few years ago, an acquaintance received a stunning phone call from her daughter s former college
roommate. The conversation went something like this:
I thought you should know your daughter never graduated from college.
What? She claimed she was just skipping the ceremony.
Well, the truth is she didn t attend classes the last two years.
The parents were shellshocked, concerned and ultimately furious at the school. Why didn t they tell
us?
The answer is FERPA.
Passed in 1974, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is an unwieldy piece of legislation
affecting all institutions that receive funding from the Department of Education.
Although it has been amended over the years, the law s bottom line remains: Once a student reaches
18 years of age or attends a postsecondary institution, he or she becomes an eligible student and all
rights under FERPA transfer from the parent to the student.
This essentially means that you have no right, as a parent, to know what or how your children are
doing in school. They can binge watch True Detective rather than attend classes, never disclose their
grades, maybe become seriously anxious or depressed, and you have to take their word for it when
they say everything s fine.
For sons and daughters who move through college in four efficient years, the law has little
consequence. Unfortunately, even kids who never played hooky, told a lie or got less than a
B in high school can become socially and academically lost

Essay on Stanislao Cannizzaro Quest for Knowledge
Throughout history, the curiosities of obtaining knowledge of facts that show the operation of general
laws have resulted into the improvements of today s society. Such curiosity of chemical reactions
coiled in the minds of John Dalton in the atomic theory, Rosalind Franklin with genetics, and most
importantly Antoine Lavoisier the father of modern chemistry. All who, worked extensively to acquire
the understanding that fascinated them most, chemistry. Another chemist who sought after the same
knowledge was Stanislao Cannizzaro. Studying organic chemistry Cannizzaro explained how certain
elements lacked the hydrogen atom in what is know n as the Cannizzaro Reaction.
Being the youngest of ten children, Cannizzaro was born in Palermo, ... Show more content on

This reaction proved that it is possible for is a chemical reaction that involves the base induced
disproportionation of an aldehyde lacking a hydrogen atom in the alpha position. Leaving Alessandria
Cannizzaro became a professor of chemistry at the University of Genoa. While there he wrote letters
outlining the differences between atoms and molecules. Sending this letter to Sebabastino de Luca, the
chair at Pisa, the letter was published in the Pisa journal as, Sunto , in which would be republished and
translated into other languages.
Ideas based on Avogadro s law, Cannizzaro clarified the distinctions of molecules and atoms giving a
solid foundation for the formulation of the periodic law. Presenting the information in such a clear
way during a time where Avogadro s theory seemed unnecessary Cannizzaro made it easy for
scientists to grasp it and Avogadro s law became the standard. At the 1860 Karlsruhe Congress,
scientist became more aware of the Sunto and the convention was held in order to develop a more
precise definition of the atom and molecule. Explaining once again, the terms of atom , physical
molecule, and chemical molecule the third day of the congress his presentation failed and it was
decided that scientist could choose to use either Berzelius s or Avogadro s system. However,
Cannizzaro s explanation and Sunto was not finished, Angelo Pavesi, a professor at pavia, handed out

Theme Of Bye Bye Blackbird
Anita Desai, the grand dame of Indian English literature, was born in Mussorie on 24 June 1937, of a
Bengali father and a German mother. This identity of her plays a significant role in the portrayal of
characters in most of her novels especially Bye, Bye Blackbird as it presents the cultural crises
suffered by her main characters due to the East West encounters. This novel is considered to be most
intimately connected to her own experience as she herself has mentioned in an interview thus, ...of all
my novels Bye, Bye Blackbird is the most rooted and experienced and the least literary in derivation
(Dhawan 92).

disease to which all Indians abroad, he declares, are prone...He is not sure, any longer . Contrary to

seems to be a seemingly contented individual. His attraction towards England is justified by his
critically sharp remarks on his observation of India that has been ever disappointing as he says:
As he is compelled to leave India for better life style and consistent economy, he has derived a gradual
compromise to put up with the mistreatment of emigrants and insults shot at him. He admires the

Summary Of Prokofiev s Harmonic And Key Relations
Prokofiev s Harmonic Idiosyncrasies and Key Relations in the Classical Symphony Prokofiev s
Classical Symphony is, oddly enough, one of his few pieces to garner much theoretical and
musicological interest. However, much of it seems to be misguided at best and more likely missing the
point altogether. This is not to say that everyone is wrong, to the contrary, most folks are not, the
problem is that the theorist and musicologist cannot seem to get on the same page. The enduring
question is not, as most would see it, whether or not the Classical Symphony is in fact classical (or for
that matter, if it is a symphony at all some have stated that it is more of a divertimento) but rather why
it is so infectiously hip and so absolutely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Richard Bass, however, does seem to understand Prokofiev s language, even though he does not write
about the first movement of the Classical Symphony. He describes Prokofiev s language as chromatic
displacement. I describe it the way a jazz musician might, which is sidestepping, but it is really the
same thing. Malcom Brown rails against Prokofiev for his shoe horned return to the tonic in the
second half of the primary theme, yet that is what makes the whole phrase work. That is what made it
Prokofiev s and no one elses. This detour, by half step or whole step is the underlying modus operandi
for much of Prokofiev s melodic ideas. We hear it in Peter and the Wolf, in the 5th symphony Scherzo,
in Mercutio, from Romeo and Juliet, and we hear it in the first twenty seconds of the Classical
Symphony. So with that in mind, I will be analysing Prokofiev s Classical Symphony through the
lense of harmonic variance, and occasionally rhythmic variance, since harmonic weight and
hypermeter are so often entwined. I will discuss, along with the basic formal structure of each
movement, Prokofiev s unique harmonic language as sussed out in the classical style. The opening
bars of the first movement is a Mannheim Rocket, straight out of the classical world of Haydn. This
leads immediately into the first theme, in the key of D major. All is well and good until the first theme
repeats, but this time down a whole step to C major. I bVII is

Flat Stanley Character Analysis
Flat Stanley
 Have you ever wished that you could wake up one day and have a completely different look? If so,
you may wish you were Stanley Lambchop, an ordinary boy who wakes up one morning looking very
different he is only half an inch thick! Because of a falling bulletin board (which made Stanley flat),
Stanley gets to experience all sorts of fun adventures. Does living a flat life suit Stanley, though? You
will have to read this classic, funny book to find out!
 Flat Stanley would be targeted to my lowest readers. It is quite a preposterous notion to wake up
flat, and the humor will keep my students engaged. While Stanley does have some fun adventures
being flat, at the end of the day, he does not really want to be different. This ... Show more content on

He has been homeschooled all his life, but this year, he is entering a private school down the street
from his New York City apartment. His struggles that year, along with his sister s journey and that of a
few other characters, are chronicled through this book that teaches so much about what it means to be
human and how hard it is to be different and accept others, looking beyond the surface to see the
person underneath.
 I have heard nothing but good things about Wonder, and I would ideally do it as a read aloud. (The
Report Card is pretty short.) It teaches so much about acceptance and looking past the surface to see
the person underneath, and that is what I want my students to do. I have yet to read Wonder, but I
cannot wait until I do. However, I have no doubt that it is an incredible novel to use in the classroom
to help students learn about people who are different.

The drug cocaine is a powerful and addictive drug that totally surpasses your physical and emotional
system in the body. The side effects can be classified based on the route of administration of the drug.
Skin:
The drug when injected directly under the skin , known as skin popping increases the duration of high
feeling and can also lead to infection and other medical complications.
Inhalation through nose:
The most popular form of administration is inhalation through the nose, also called snorting. The
common side effects of snorting includes,
Loss of sense of smell
Nose bleeds
Difficulty swallowing

Argumentative Essay On Mental Illness
Statistics show that one in five youth will experience a mental health illness within the year or in one
point in their lifetime (National Alliance on Mental Illness). In today s society, one doesn t need to go
far to find mental illness in the population; At Vaughn International Studies Academy (VISA), there
are students living with mental health disorders. A student from the high school, Ava Gonzalez*,
described the hardships she faces when living with depression as, difficult, especially when I m not
feeling good and I don t want to come to school and deal with everything going on. While it may
appear as if a person living with a mental health disorder is only struggling with the disorder itself, the
stigma is another struggle; Peers will often negatively stereotype and label with common
misconceptions and preconceived notions of mental illness. Mia Velasquez*, a tenth grader attending
VISA, details that besides having anxiety, stigma is a constant struggle because no one really
understands how you feel. As the students have expressed, negatively labeling teens with mental
health issues prompts stigmatic thinking, prejudice, and other bias. Stigmatic labels, such as being
mentally unstable or insane, are far too common with mental illness. Both Ava Gonzalez and Mia
Velasquez, VISA students, explain that people will often think of them as incapable of accomplishing
anything of high or low significance, being completely helpless, and faking being ill. Hearing others

The Devil Behind The Mirror Analysis
In The Devil behind the Mirror, Steven Gregory studies the effects of tourism and globalization in the
Dominican Republic, specifically the towns of Boca Chica and Andres near the capital of Santo
Domingo.
The first chapter analyses how the economy of the Dominican republic switched from a focus on the
sugar industry to a focus on the growing urge for international tourism. One large aspect of the
economy of the Dominican republic was the sugar industry, especially in the city of Andres. Gregory
writes that, the sugar industry was a large source of income for the Dominican Republic. Gregory
states, that as the mid to late 20th century continued, the sugar industry was not supporting the country
s economy at all, so the economy began to switch its focus from the sugar industry in Andres to the
increasing interest in international tourism in Boca Chica. Gregory makes an important point, that part
of the push for the Dominican Republic to switch to an economic focus on tourism was caused by a
push by the World Back to promote tourism as an economic panacea . Gregory quotes Malcolm Crick,
who states, Tourism was represented as an easy option for development because it relied largely on
natural resources already in place e.g. sand, sun, friendly people and therefore required no vast capital
outlays for infrastructure. This shift in the Dominican Republic took off because it seemed like a very
easy way for the country to develop economically and make themselves known on a

The Theory Of Paternal Absence On The Timing Of Puberty
One theory discussed in Psychology, 7 Ed (Hockenbury, 2015) relates the theory of paternal absence
on the timing of puberty [in girls]. The timing of puberty is also influenced by the absence of the
biological father in the home. (Hockenbury, 2015, p 377). By also he is referring to additional biologic
factors such as level of physical activity and body mass index. While it is true that there is much
research supporting the concept of earlier puberty tied to absence of the father, there is also significant
information about maternal factors which can affect the age of puberty during childhood and
adolescence. In addition, there are also factors caused by both parents, together, that can affect the
timing of puberty.
Research has shown that the absence of fathers leads to earlier puberty in girls. (Bogeart 2005, 2008).
In 2005, Anthony Bogeart published a study based on U.S. epidemiological statistics showing that
boys and girls go through puberty (manifested by menarche in girls and voice change in boys) at an
earlier age when there is no father living with them at age 14. Furthermore, in 2007, Bogeart
published a study using statistics from Great Britain. In it, he showed that girls experience menarche
earlier when the father is absent. While there are numerous publications on the effects of the absence
of the father on puberty, there seems to be little if any published research on the physical absence of
the mother in the home and its subsequent effect on the timing of

Culture Clash In House Of Sand And Fog By Amy Tan
The world has a variety of cultures and religions, and in this generation these different
cultures mix. It is not easy for some people to accept these different faiths and morals, however
they learn to day by day. In books such as House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III and The Joy
Luck Club by Amy Tan, the authors convey the theme of the clash of cultures. Writing books
about different cultures and the struggle of their acceptance, is crucial for modern society because
it gives the world a realistic view on what is actually happening. Perhaps the message the authors
are trying to send with the theme of culture clash, is that because of all the different cultures,
people should learn to accept the variety.

In the Joy Luck Club, all of the chinese mothers have a poor relationship with their
daughters, mostly because of the language barrier and the daughters non existing knowledge of
Chinese Culture. One can see this with Jing
mei Woo and her mother, Suyuan Woo. At the
beginning of the book, Jing
mei, or June, wants to be known as an American, not Chinese. Either it
is the fact that being Chinese embarrasses her or she does not feel Chinese because she does not
know the language, June Woo is stuck in between two of her cultures colliding. It is easy to not
feel one s nationality when no one takes the time to teach it. June s mother never really has the
desire to teach June about Chinese culture, she just expects June to know it already. June goes as
far as saying, I didn t have to do what my mother said anymore. I wasn t her slave. This wasn t
China. I had listened to her before and look what happened. She was the stupid one (141). By
making that little jab at Chinese communism, it is quite obvious June does not know much about
Chinese culture, however, she seems to compare American and Chinese culture together. Although
Suyuan Woo never educated her daughter fully about Chinese culture, June starts to understand

The Shavian Theatre of Ideas (Modern Drama)
THE SHAVIAN THEATRE OF IDEAS (MODERN DRAMA) The predominating influence in
determining Shaw to turn to the drama was the example of Ibsen and equally prominent was his love
of debating, in which he had shown how irresistible it was for him to counter his arguments himself if
no one else would. These influential strains compelled him to choose the kind of play in which the
characters undertake this dual task of proposer and opposer. In 1892, he made it into Widower s
Houses, and thereafter, for nearly sixty years with unflagging energy he made drama peculiarly his
own province. It was not till after Saint Joan that he became the revered elder playwright, a highly
respectable figure whom, however, the dramatic critics did not cease to ... Show more content on

When he had thus fulfilled his great wish to express his fundamental religious faith as a Creative
Evolutionist, Shaw returned in Saint Joan to a drama of his normal scope and manner. Its heroine,
portrayed as a sane and shrewd country girl of extraordinary strength of min and hardihood of body...a
thorough daughter of the soil in her peasantlike matter of factness and doggedness , she was however,
in her creator s mind an instrument like himself of the Life force. In The Apple Cart, he turned again
to the future and to the dismay of those who had regarded him as an advanced advocate of democracy
showed that the highest ability could be found as well in a king as in a peasant. His brilliance was
undiminished and to the end his extraordinary vitality of mind animated all he wrote. Shaw s ideas can
never cease to form an important part of his dramatic legacy, any more than we can appreciate
Shakespeare without reference to the view of life which lies behind his work. Nevertheless, it is as
dramatist upon the stage that Shaw demands primary consideration. In his own day, Shaw s command
over audiences which by no means consisted only of those who shared his ideas was an obvious fact.
His wit was always subservient to the total working of the genius of the comic playwright. His
dramatic instinct, indeed, was altogether transcendent and so willfully fashioned its own play that the
audience almost forgot in its delight the

Substance Dualism Is The Belief That The Mind And The Body...
Substance dualism is the belief that the mind and the body are separate entities, consequently, an
argument for dualism is that i. minds can experience anger, ii. Nothing physical can experience anger
and therefore, minds are not physical. In this examination my goal is to show that minds are physical.
I will argue against the second premise, showing that the mind is the brain, which is physical. I will do
so by referring to the functionalist school of thought and additionally, by examining the functioning of
the brain with regard to research on neuroscience. Furthermore, I will exhibit that substance dualist
Rene Descartes work on non human animals is inconsistent with research that shows the existence of
mental states in non human animals, thus confirming that minds are physical. Functionalism is the
belief that a mental state, such as pain, is to have an internal state which does a certain job
(Ravenscroft, 2005, p. 50). For example, the pain that a human being feels and the pain that an
octopus feels may have different physical processes within the brain, but the pain is still being felt; in
other words, to be in (or have) mental state M is to have an internal state which does the M job
(Ravenscroft, 2005, p. 51). Any mental state M is defined in terms of inputs, outputs and internal
connections, and for example, the pain role s input may be stepping on a Lego piece, the output may
be cursing and finally a possible internal connection, which is the causal link

The Process Of Deduction Logic
In social research, traditional and non traditional methods are used to explore and examine research
queries and relate methods of data collection and observation. One conventionally accepted method is
through deductive logic. Deductive logic is research that begins with a theory and arrives at a specific
expectation through a series of scientific steps. Both explanatory and exploratory techniques can be
used in deductive. In contrast, inductive methods, in which researchers examine specific data sets and
detect general patterns, are considered non traditional. In inductive logic, the identification of
empirical patterns result in a generalization about some social process (Schutt, 2012, p. 45).
The process of deduction logic begins with statements, also known as premises , that are assumed to
be true. A determination is made regarding additional factors that must be true if the premises are true.
A special logical structure, known as modus ponens, is a rule asserting that a hypothetical proposition
according to which if the antecedent be affirmed, the consequent is affirmed (Merriam Webster, 2015).
The form of any argument having the structure of modus ponens is as follows: Given P, if P then Q,
so, Q. Using this structure, any argument is stated as the major premise, the minor premise, and the
conclusion. In this way, the statements are evaluated in terms of validity and soundness.
The strength of deductive reasoning is its consideration of validity and

Argumentative Essay On Role Playing Games
Kids all across America play role playing games that involve shooting each other with water guns
which sounds harmless and innocent but some people think different. A select hand of people think
that kids and teenagers playing role playing games are violent and could lead the kids into a troubled
future, but they really are just harmless. The reasons for why role playing games like senior assassin
are harless are that it isn t real killing, it doesn t involve real guns, no one gets hurt, and that it is
usually set up by the school that all of the students attend. But on the other hand the people that think
that it is violent have no real evidence and only say things like someone could get hurt, but from what
the water, and they also say that it involves weapons but that really doesn t mean anything.
The evidence for why it is harmless is because there has never been a death or killing from playing
those harmless games because there is nothing wrong with them. Others say that the game is very
dangerous but there is no evidence for that, the only thing that they say is that it simulates violence but
there is really nothing violent about it, besides that the game is just fun. A quote from an article called
Violent video games may stop crime by keeping criminals busy playing violent video games and in
that it says violent video games may have directly contributed to the decrease in real world violence.
That quote really means a lot because it is saying that there is

Effective bad news emails need to be well planned out. Components of direct bad news messages
should include a buffer statement, then the individual needs to deliver the bad news, provide a
rationale, explain the impacts, focus on the future, and show goodwill to the recipient of the email. In
the case of Nick Jensen, he needs to develop an email that explains why the company needs to get out
of the chemicals and that a layoff of ten loyal employees would be imminent with this change
(Cardon, 2013). Although Mike Jenson is Nick Jensen s uncle a professional email needs to be drafted
as such: Good Morning Mr. Jenson, I know that you have put a tremendous amount of work into this
company and have done a fantastic job. There are many things that are going great within the

chemicals division; I expect that we could get around a half of a million dollars from the sell.
However, with the chemical division gone, the company stands a better chance of surviving, if we do
not sell then within five years at the rate we are going we will be out of business. Unfortunately, with
the losses we have incurred with the chemicals division, we will have to lay off ten loyal employees

The Security Issues Revolving Around Wireless Networks
Introduction
Wireless computer networks have become very common in the past several years. The convenience
with which computer users can utilize internet connections, without having a network cable attached
to their computers, makes wireless networks extraordinarily popular in today s on the go society.
Homes, offices, and public businesses (e.g., hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.) all frequently have
active wireless computer networks. As is the case with hard wired computer networks, security is very
important in wireless networking environments, even more so because one is not physically connected
to the network. This paper will examine many of the security issues revolving around wireless
networks, as well as ways to protect such networks from vulnerabilities and attacks.
Motivation
A hacker who wishes to break into or eavesdrop onto a wireless network may possess one or more of
the following motives for attempting such action:
Challenge
Greed
Malicious intent
The challenge motive involves an individual breaking into a system simply to gain access or proceed
beyond a barrier, without causing any actual harm or stealing or destroying data. A challenger may
typically brag to his or her friends about successfully penetrating a system, in a way expressing a
sense of accomplishment. Greed involves a desire to gain something from the attack. Credit card
numbers, bank accounts numbers, passwords, and classified trade secrets are just a few examples of

Limited Liability Corporation and Partnership Paper
Limited Liability Corporation and limited liability partnership are two of several types of structures
that individuals can give thought to forming when starting a business. To form a corporation each
member has limited liability, but the corporation has full liability. Forming a partnership requires at
least two people, which are called partners, and each partner has limited liability. This paper will
describe the roles of Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) and Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). In

To form a corporation with limited liability, there are no restrictions on the number of members who
can be involved. One member can start the business and investors can become members after the
business has been established. With the guarantee that members potential loss is no more than what
was originally invested. In addition, if an individual decides to dissolve the affiliation, the transfer of
ownership is not difficult because the member only needs to sell his or her stock. However, the
disadvantages are not too severe that one would shy away from the thought of forming a small
business. The circumstance that one should use to form a limited liability partnership is the individual
must be a licensed professional, such as dentist, doctor, accountant, or lawyer. In addition the
formation must be between two or more individuals. Other factors to consider when making a choice
on which structure is better than the other, are financial protection as well as taxes. The number of
potential members or partners is another deciding factor on which structure is the best choice.
Conclusion LLCs and LLPs are business structures which are most often formed business entities.
Each structure has its advantages as well as disadvantages and potential business owners should weigh
the pros and cons of each before making a final decision. In an effort to make a sound financial

Themes In Silver Sparrow
Tayari Jones s third novel, Silver Sparrow , also known as Tale of Secret Sisters is a novel about two
secret African American teenage sisters who have different relationships and lead very different lives.
The novel takes place in the 1980s in middle class Atlanta, Georgia. The two narrators, Dana Yarboro
and Chaurisse Witherspoon, go through the same process, but in very different directions, which is
maturation. The main secret in the novel is that Dana knows that she has a half sister, but Charisse
dose not. Dana says in the opening line of chapter one, My father, James Witherspoon is a bigamist.

Dana and Charisse figure out why James is married to two women during James s younger years.
Dana is attractive and scholastic. Charisse is moderate and diligent. They both have relationships with
boys and reflect about their mothers. The main truth is Dana knows about James s other family, but
Charisse does not know. Dana and Charisse are well developed characters because of the same process
they go through the whole novel. They develop the different versions of the truth and their different
personalities. They can be realistic, because anybody can go through the same situation that Dana and
Charisse did. More people are having the same problem then what the sisters have. The sisters

about Gwen and Charisse s side of family and Charisse is about Laverne, but cannot find out about
Dana s family. The novel, Silver Sparrow , is not about sisterly love between mothers and daughters, it

As consultants for Golden Eagle Inc., we have been given a mission to identify the marketing issues of
Sbarro, a private chain of pizzeria that specializes in their well known product of New York style pizza

appreciate and love pizza. Nevertheless, we noticed that this brand is dying not only in our research on
the California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) campus but also at another Sbarro location at a

specifically the Los Angeles area. We say this because Sbarro was first founded in the east coast of
Brooklyn, New York by these two Italian couple that immigrated to America from Naples, Italy. In

Cold and Warm Fronts
Cold and Warm fronts Often times when we experience a drastic change in weather, these changes
occur from fronts. Both warm and cold fronts create sudden changes. These fronts are different air
masses that separate at different densities. Zones are what separate the difference between warm and
cold fronts. Often times between warm and cold front there are narrow lines and they`re typically
shown by lines on a weather map. Usually, an air mass advance into the region occupied by another
air mass. When two fronts collide this creates a midlatitude cyclone. Also, bringing much precipitation
and severe weather to the area. There are five basic types of fronts warm fronts, cold fronts, stationary
fronts, occluded fronts, and drylines. Although, these are all important and have a big impact on our
weather systems the most common are warm and cold fronts. Warm fronts are noted on a weather map
often by a red line with semicircles indication the direction in which the front is heading. They often
invade an area of cooler air, and bring warmer air to the area. Warm fonts usually move from
southwest to northeast and the air behind a warm front is usually warmer and moister than the air
behind it (Climate Weather. Web). They often come into play in the United States by (mT) or maritime
tropical. This is where the warm air enters the borders from the Gulf of Mexico pushing over the land

Guiding Relationships Lead to Great Change
Often when a individuals are placed in a new environment, they tend to close themselves off and try to

character Cress is removed from her parents while she is away at college. Before being in college she

opinions besides her own and her boyfriend Edwin. Edwin is a slightly older college student whom

Her parents call her to ask her to come home to see her grandfather since he is very sick. After
discussing her grandfather dying with Edwin, she doesn t believe that she needs to visit him. But when
Edwin speaks to her about her irrational decision she is surprised that Edwin who loved her he said so,
anyway [was] cold and disapproving. Looking at herself through Edwin s eyes, she hesitated (84).
This is the first time Cress has clearly shown her dependency on Edwin. The language of cold used to
describe Edwin proposes a challenge to Cress s beliefs which she sees as the warmth throughout the
story. She is so consumed with what his opinion is of her that he is able to convince Cress to visit her
grandfather. But this halo that surrounds her when she is around Edwin seems to fade when she is
returning home and is separated from him. Even though she appears to have accepted that going to
visit her grandfather is the kind thing to do, once on the train her resentment returned. The Pacific
Electric was hot and smelled of metal and dusty plush (85). When she is around Edwin everything
seems to be surreal. She shows warmth that isn t in her usual personality and she strives to have his
approval of her. When she is away, even though she respects his advice, Cress doesn t continue her
warmth. The warmth becomes blurred with traces of guilt since the quote uses words like hot and
dusty . She doesn t find clarity with her ideas, and feels that the only person that matters is herself.
Although she is somewhat aware of her insecurities, she tries to forget by pushing her selfishness onto
other people. She is so confident that she isn t insecure that her true feelings are hidden. She still
dismisses the fact that going to her grandfather is the right thing to do and continues to express this
when she is with her parents.

The Sunni tale focuses on the allegedly democratic selection that led to Abu Bakr s rise, touting him as

this election was conducted amongst a small group of tribal leaders who actively prevented Ali s

This remains the primary disagreement between Sunni and Shi a Islam.

Analysis Of Any Hope Of Ever Seeing You Again By Eugenio...
Eugenio Montale was an Italian poet who was named the Greatest Italian poet since Leopardi (Hecht).
He was a hopeless romantic and that translated into his poetry and was the theme for most of it aswell,
and the poem Any Hope of Ever Seeing you Again is no exception. The poem Any Hope of Ever
Seeing you Again portrays two different sides to a story and can be interpreted in many ways due to its
style of writing.
Eugenio Montale was born in Genoa in 1896. In WWI he wa an infirmary worker and later chief
literary critic for Italy with the Corriere Della Sera. He was a music critic, translator and was made a
lifetime member of the Italian Senate in 1967. He also won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1975. He
died six years later in Milan, 1981. In 1927 he fell in love with a married woman who he nicknamed
Mosca which means fly. It is believed that this was borrowed from Ben Jonson s Volpone. Montale
stayed devoted to her until her husband died in 1958. They were married until Mosca died five years
later. He also met an American author named Irma Brandeis who influences some of his work, which
mostly revolves around unattainable love. She made him feel better through the Fascist years, so when
they became separated, he used what he was feeling and put it into poetry.
Montale wrote his poetry during an era where the theme amor de lonh, love from afar, was popular,
which is also tied to donna angelicata or angelic lady. Donna angelicata is mostly tied to
communication attempts to an allusive lover. His poems are often really personal, including a lady
figure with many names, some of which including Gertu, Liuba, Vixen, Dora and others. Some of the
influencers for his poems include Plato, Shakespeare, Petrarch and The Bible. His poems almost
always deal with fragmentary experience, the meaning of which is either obsucr or possibly,
terrifyingly absent. In Montales Any Hope of Ever Seeing you Again , the last five lines portray strong
imagery, which makes the author maybe be destitute or could be seen as the author carrying some kind
of burden. In line six the poem contains descriptive words such as distorted and tenuous which
Convey deep emotion (Bella). The use of these words create a depressing aura in this

Balloon Angioplasty Essay
1. Introduction Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world accounting for 17.5
million people, or more than 30% of all deaths. Atherosclerosis leads to coronary artery disease, which
is a manifestation of ischemic heart disease [1,2]. When an artery narrows, or becomes blocked,
intervention is required to restore normal blood flow. In patients with multi vessel coronary artery
disease, coronary artery bypass graft surgery in generally accepted as a better method due to the
greater risk of developing recurrent ischemic events. However, in those with a single vessel
obstruction, the non surgical procedure known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been
shown to be as effective in treating stenosis [2]. PCI is achieved using balloon angioplasty, which was
first introduced in 1977 [1]. 1.1 Bare Metal Stents (BMS) By the mid 1980 s, bare metal stents (BMS)
were developed to overcome the limitations of balloon angioplasty [1]. Coronary stents are metal
lattices that hold the vessel open, which prevents recoil following angioplasty [2]. They are delivered
using a catheter mounted balloon inserted either in the brachial or femoral artery, which is then
threaded to the site of blockage in the coronary artery. The balloon is inflated, and the stent is released

Power In America
Power is in the people The overall theme that has shown itself in all the textual artifacts is, Power is in
people. In moving west for gold and exploration, growth in the literal Battle of the Sexes, or the
building of a nation. Unity has brought power to the weak and made them great. Today, Americans
have lost the unity that once built us. We seem to have opened the gates of hell as we let war consume
us and let the People we had once been, crumble and blow away in the wind. Power, it is one of the
most craved feelings of people everywhere. We crave it because it makes us feel as though we are
more important or it gives us someone to look up to. What did settlers do when America was birthed?
They placed George Washington in the highest position of power, the President. Every time something
happens Americans look to a single person to make a change. Except in some circumstances, take the
Mid twentieth century civil rights movement. All those who have been suffering banded together to
make protest against all the wrongs that were done to them. Now America has an equal race/sex

Constitutional Interpretation: Engineers Case and criticisms of Callinan J in the Workchoices Case.
By Mark Walker
Introduction
In the dissenting judgment made by Callinan J in the landmark New South Wales v Commonwealth (
Workchoices Case ), a strong criticism was mounted against constitutional interpretation methods
employed in the judicial forum. Explicitly, this conjecture was focused at Isaacs J s judgement in
Amalgamated Society of Engineers v Adelaide Steamship Co Ltd ( Engineers Case ), where a
textualism approach to constitutional interpretation was adopted. Callinan J expressed the Engineers
Case as less than satisfactory , using detached language to discredit its literal methodology of
interpreting the constitution. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such implied rights are only applicable if they are plainly arising from the text of the Consititution,
rather than assumptions upon which it is based, but which is does not express . This supports a more
recent trend to a purposive approach to interpretation of the constitution.
Summary of current position
The High Court of Australia is essentially focused towards textualism, however as it can be seen there
has been a more current relaxation of the rule in recent years.
Textualism as the preferred methodology of interpretation
Although Callinan J in the Workchoices Case does not give full merit to these justifications, a textual
approach to the interpretation of the constitution expressed in Engineers Case it not without its
reasons. There are numerous considerations that need to be weighed when determining the appropriate
methodology for constitutional interpretation. A major determining factor is the practicability of its
legal application, and its ability to appropriately and fairly resolve issues entrenched in the text of the
constitution. The following arguments provide a support for textualism, and a criticism of other
methodologies.
Progression to textualism as a necessity
Through the progression of history the need for the principles articulated in Engineers Case was both
necessary and appropriate. Callinan J in Workchoices Case made

Most literatures places so much focus on the entrepreneur as an individual, framing the entrepreneur
as an individual or actor while losing sight of the social dimension where their businesses operate. the
misrepresentation of entrepreneurship as a solitary practice remain prevalent among literature from

of one or more social networks (West 2001).
A social network is not just about posting vacation photos. In this age, social media has become a very

Love, Care, And Treat People With Respect From A Very...
I was taught to love, care, and treat people with respect from a very young age. When I was a young
girl, my mom would take me with her to work. At the time, she worked at an assisted living center in
Rome, Georgia. You see, I was a very quiet and curious child who observed the world innocently with
bright, untainted eyes. I didn t care much to be around the other children who were usually loud and
somewhat bothersome, but I enjoyed being around adults. So when my mom would take me with her,
the elderly people living there found much joy in having my company. I would sit and listen to them
tell me all sorts of stories from their past for hours on end, but I loved to hear about them. In a way, I
somehow understood that these people were lonely and only had so much time left. They just wanted
someone who could appreciate them and what they had to say; they wanted to feel like they were of
some importance and had a sense of meaning. I cared greatly about what they had to say, even though
I didn t understand it that much. More importantly, I cared about their feelings and wellbeing. I can
still remember at least two of my mom s patients. One was a man named Lou, and I believe he wore a
prosthetic leg. He was a very sweet and dear old man who loved the outdoors. My mom would bring
him outside in the mornings to watch the birds and to get some fresh, crisp, morning air. He had

An Evolutionary Ethical Theory of Social Risks and Opportunities
ABSTRACT: Social standards guide us in what to do and what to refrain from doing. But can social
moral or legal standards be trusted? This paper presents an evolutionary ethical theory that generates
trustworthy ethical norms. Each norm is assigned a demonstrable risk, called an ethical risk, that
depends on both human behavior and danger to the survival of society. The assigned risk is minimal if
and only if everybody obeys the norm. The higher the risk assigned to a norm, the higher the norm s
rank (an empirical quantity depending on the evolutionary status of society). An ordered finite set of
ethical risks and ethical norms allows the settlement of ethical ... Show more content on

Hence in the western world tendencies to violence are rising, corruption [iwd, p.8] is on the increase.
And in Germany, for example, a third of all marriages break up, the birth rate is low, the abortion rate
is high and every third household consists of a single person [Handelsblatt]. Is the West, as East Asian
critics smugly say, a group of newly decaying countries [Wickert, p.19]?
If this reproach is right, the decay of a specific society should be avoided by appropriate behaviour
patterns. Some of them may be identified already by a thought experiment: If violence, theft or
deception are the rule, people and their society go to ruin; the situation is stabilised when everyone
helps each other, for then violence or deception are no longer means of survival. Ethics as a theory of
rightful dealings involves empirical research on behaviourally conditioned ethical risks, which may
depend on the technological level of a society. Each of these ethical risks jeopardizes the survival both
of individual citizens and their society as a whole. An ethical risk is a quantity with a certain
magnitude; with each ethical risk goes an ethical norm which is the condition for the minimisation of
that particular risk. Unfortunately risks are seldom independent from one another. So only the
simultaneous observance of various ethical norms minimises all essential collective and individual
survival risks. If only a single ethical

Analysis Of Disney s Disney
Portfolio Project: Disney Gregory John Pico AMU Disney in other Countries Each country has
differences with how their culture plays a factor on how they do business. Rather it is by certain topics
being discussed or a certain way people greet one another. When examining the cultural charts of both
France and China on http://geert hofstede.com , a U.S. manager can get an idea on how their behavior
may need to be modified when communicating with associates from France or China. For example,
France scored a 68 on power distance, meaning that children are raised to be dependent on their
parents, as well as teachers and to their superiors in the work environment (geert hofstede, 2014). It is

The Chinese Communist government has complete power over the legislation, economic and cultural
institutions. While western economies have governments that promote transparency for doing
business, China s Communist Party s rules and regulations have made transparency difficult
(Jayaraman, 2009). Large manufacturing companies can come under various and random regulations
and bureaucracies, and the Chinese promotes a form of social networking called guanxiwang, where
guanxi is the relationship between the individual and the entities of the network (Jayaraman, 2009).
With the heavy amount of corruption and the lack of transparency the guanxiwang or the social
network with connections with people from the communist party can help western businesses avoid
red tape and bureaucracy. The IMF told the international business world that China was doing fine in
their transition to a new normal. With the IMF stating that the country was moving towards a slower
but safer and more sustainable growth (Porter, 2015). With the risk coming from the Chinese
government and their push for more economic reform might prove to be insufficient (Porter, 2015).
The leaders in Beijing have stated that if there is further economic change it will lead to inevitably
political instability, which doesn t lead to the strongest incentive for government reform. Laws,

Burj Khalifa And The Tallest Building
Burj Khalifa
Intro
The future has met the present in the Burj Khalifa, which stands today as the tallest building ever
built, standing at around 830 metres (2,700 ft) tall. From the top of the Burj Khalifa s 160 floors, one
can see a circumference distance of about 855 kilometres (550 miles). When compared, the highest
observational deck of the Empire State Building in New York City, once the tallest building in the
world, developed a circumferential view of about 320 km. The 460,000 square meter structure
contains residential, hotel, commercial, office, entertainment, shopping, leisure, and parking facilities.
With accurate and sophisticated panning, engineers construct and built this larger than life structure in
a really short time involving some of the latest construction methods of this era. The concepts used for
the Burj Khalifa s foundation construction, overall structural design, wind engineering, and
construction planning have revolutionised high rise construction.
The goal of the Burj Khalifa is not to be the world s highest building, it s to express the world s
highest aspirations. The superstructure has reached over 165 stories. the final height of the building is
2,717 feet (828 metres). The height of the multi use skyscraper has comfortably exceed the previous
record holder, the 509 metre (1671 ft) tall Taipei 101.
Body
At almost 830 metres and more than 160 stories, Burj Khalifa holds the records for the tallest building

Three Things In A Bag
In class our teacher; Mrs. Johnston gave us a project called Three Things in a Bag. We shared three
items to get to understand each other and so we can express ourselves. The students in our classroom
brought three items so they can give a speech of what they like to do and who they really are. At
home, we brought three items that really mean a lot to us and put them in our bag. The three items I
brought were a PS4 controller, the movie Blind Side, and a Rubik s cube. These are the three items
that mean a lot to me. The first item I brought and shared in class was a PS4 controller. My intention
of bringing the PS4 controller is I love to use it to play PS4 games. Also, I love to use it to watch
movies such as Goose Bumps on the PS4 console. In addition to why I chose the PS4 controller, the
PS4 controller reflects me by showing I love to play on the PS4 console. All in all, the PS4 is essential
to my life and the following have proved why it is. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My intention of bringing this movie called Blind Side is it teaches me a lesson. The lesson that this
movie has taught me is that lending a helping hand to people can make you successful. Also, I love to
watch it. I would actually recommend it to anyone I cross paths with. Furthermore, it motivates me to
help people so I may become successful in the future. If you ever watch it, and it teaches you a lesson
or it motivates you, it is definite that you are going to become very successful in your life and so on.
As you have already read, Blind Side is an essential item in my life because I know that someday, it is
going to be one of the reasons why I am

William Of Orange And James II And The Glorious Revolution
Background On July 1 1690, William of Orange and James II led their respective armies into battle at
the River Boyne. James II was a Catholic king who gained power in England after King Charles II
died in 1685. Many of James opponents were Protestant, and they were strongly against the Catholic
monarch. James daughter, Mary, was married to William of Orange, and she was Protestant. For many
years, Mary was James only child. This meant that if James II died, she would take the throne. This
brought great comfort to the Protestant groups in Ireland, as their ruler would no longer be Catholic.
However, when James wife had a son, the crown would be passed to him, and England would have
another Catholic monarch. This caused panic and outrage from James Protestant opponents, which led
them to invite William of Orange to invade England and overthrow James II (BBC: Battle of the
Boyne). William accepted, and he and his army invaded England in November of 1688. The invasion
was successful, and William and Mary were awarded the throne as joint monarchs. This event was
known as the Glorious Revolution . For a year, James II chose not to fight. Many English nobles were
taking the side of William. This made James reluctant to attempt to regain the throne (BBC: Battle of
the Boyne).

The flintlock musket. Ironically, the flintlock musket was originally designed for King Louis by a
Frenchman named Marin le Bourgeoys. As opposed to matchlock, flintlock muskets didn t require a lit
match to ignite the gunpowder. Instead, the flintlock created a spark that did this. The shooter no
longer had to use a match to fire the weapon. This increased the fire rate and limited the amount of
gunpowder used while shooting. This innovation led to the birth of the modern firearm (The Firearms

  • 2. The Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act A few years ago, an acquaintance received a stunning phone call from her daughter s former college roommate. The conversation went something like this: I thought you should know your daughter never graduated from college. What? She claimed she was just skipping the ceremony. Well, the truth is she didn t attend classes the last two years. The parents were shellshocked, concerned and ultimately furious at the school. Why didn t they tell us? The answer is FERPA. Passed in 1974, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is an unwieldy piece of legislation affecting all institutions that receive funding from the Department of Education. Although it has been amended over the years, the law s bottom line remains: Once a student reaches 18 years of age or attends a postsecondary institution, he or she becomes an eligible student and all rights under FERPA transfer from the parent to the student. This essentially means that you have no right, as a parent, to know what or how your children are doing in school. They can binge watch True Detective rather than attend classes, never disclose their grades, maybe become seriously anxious or depressed, and you have to take their word for it when they say everything s fine. For sons and daughters who move through college in four efficient years, the law has little consequence. Unfortunately, even kids who never played hooky, told a lie or got less than a B in high school can become socially and academically lost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay on Stanislao Cannizzaro Quest for Knowledge Throughout history, the curiosities of obtaining knowledge of facts that show the operation of general laws have resulted into the improvements of today s society. Such curiosity of chemical reactions coiled in the minds of John Dalton in the atomic theory, Rosalind Franklin with genetics, and most importantly Antoine Lavoisier the father of modern chemistry. All who, worked extensively to acquire the understanding that fascinated them most, chemistry. Another chemist who sought after the same knowledge was Stanislao Cannizzaro. Studying organic chemistry Cannizzaro explained how certain elements lacked the hydrogen atom in what is know n as the Cannizzaro Reaction. Leaving Alessandria Cannizzaro became a professor of chemistry at the University of Genoa. While there he wrote letters outlining the differences between atoms and molecules. Sending this letter to Sebabastino de Luca, the chair at Pisa, the letter was published in the Pisa journal as, Sunto , in which would be republished and translated into other languages. Ideas based on Avogadro s law, Cannizzaro clarified the distinctions of molecules and atoms giving a solid foundation for the formulation of the periodic law. Presenting the information in such a clear way during a time where Avogadro s theory seemed unnecessary Cannizzaro made it easy for scientists to grasp it and Avogadro s law became the standard. At the 1860 Karlsruhe Congress, scientist became more aware of the Sunto and the convention was held in order to develop a more precise definition of the atom and molecule. Explaining once again, the terms of atom , physical molecule, and chemical molecule the third day of the congress his presentation failed and it was decided that scientist could choose to use either Berzelius s or Avogadro s system. • 6. Summary Of Prokofiev s Harmonic And Key Relations Prokofiev s Harmonic Idiosyncrasies and Key Relations in the Classical Symphony Prokofiev s Classical Symphony is, oddly enough, one of his few pieces to garner much theoretical and musicological interest. However, much of it seems to be misguided at best and more likely missing the point altogether. This is not to say that everyone is wrong, to the contrary, most folks are not, the problem is that the theorist and musicologist cannot seem to get on the same page. The enduring question is not, as most would see it, whether or not the Classical Symphony is in fact classical (or for that matter, if it is a symphony at all some have stated that it is more of a divertimento) but rather why it is so infectiously hip and so absolutely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Richard Bass, however, does seem to understand Prokofiev s language, even though he does not write about the first movement of the Classical Symphony. He describes Prokofiev s language as chromatic displacement. I describe it the way a jazz musician might, which is sidestepping, but it is really the same thing. Malcom Brown rails against Prokofiev for his shoe horned return to the tonic in the second half of the primary theme, yet that is what makes the whole phrase work. That is what made it Prokofiev s and no one elses. This detour, by half step or whole step is the underlying modus operandi for much of Prokofiev s melodic ideas. We hear it in Peter and the Wolf, in the 5th symphony Scherzo, in Mercutio, from Romeo and Juliet, and we hear it in the first twenty seconds of the Classical Symphony. So with that in mind, I will be analysing Prokofiev s Classical Symphony through the lense of harmonic variance, and occasionally rhythmic variance, since harmonic weight and hypermeter are so often entwined. I will discuss, along with the basic formal structure of each movement, Prokofiev s unique harmonic language as sussed out in the classical style. The opening bars of the first movement is a Mannheim Rocket, straight out of the classical world of Haydn. This leads immediately into the first theme, in the key of D major. • 9. Argumentative Essay On Mental Illness Statistics show that one in five youth will experience a mental health illness within the year or in one point in their lifetime (National Alliance on Mental Illness). In today s society, one doesn t need to go far to find mental illness in the population; At Vaughn International Studies Academy (VISA), there are students living with mental health disorders. A student from the high school, Ava Gonzalez*, described the hardships she faces when living with depression as, difficult, especially when I m not feeling good and I don t want to come to school and deal with everything going on. While it may appear as if a person living with a mental health disorder is only struggling with the disorder itself, the stigma is another struggle; Peers will often negatively stereotype and label with common misconceptions and preconceived notions of mental illness. Mia Velasquez*, a tenth grader attending VISA, details that besides having anxiety, stigma is a constant struggle because no one really understands how you feel. As the students have expressed, negatively labeling teens with mental health issues prompts stigmatic thinking, prejudice, and other bias. Stigmatic labels, such as being mentally unstable or insane, are far too common with mental illness. Both Ava Gonzalez and Mia Velasquez, VISA students, explain that people will often think of them as incapable of accomplishing anything of high or low significance, being completely helpless, and faking being ill. • 10. The Devil Behind The Mirror Analysis In The Devil behind the Mirror, Steven Gregory studies the effects of tourism and globalization in the Dominican Republic, specifically the towns of Boca Chica and Andres near the capital of Santo Domingo. The first chapter analyses how the economy of the Dominican republic switched from a focus on the sugar industry to a focus on the growing urge for international tourism. One large aspect of the economy of the Dominican republic was the sugar industry, especially in the city of Andres. Gregory writes that, the sugar industry was a large source of income for the Dominican Republic. Gregory states, that as the mid to late 20th century continued, the sugar industry was not supporting the country s economy at all, so the economy began to switch its focus from the sugar industry in Andres to the increasing interest in international tourism in Boca Chica. Gregory makes an important point, that part of the push for the Dominican Republic to switch to an economic focus on tourism was caused by a push by the World Back to promote tourism as an economic panacea . Gregory quotes Malcolm Crick, who states, Tourism was represented as an easy option for development because it relied largely on natural resources already in place e.g. sand, sun, friendly people and therefore required no vast capital outlays for infrastructure. This shift in the Dominican Republic took off because it seemed like a very easy way for the country to develop economically and make themselves known on a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Theory Of Paternal Absence On The Timing Of Puberty One theory discussed in Psychology, 7 Ed (Hockenbury, 2015) relates the theory of paternal absence on the timing of puberty [in girls]. The timing of puberty is also influenced by the absence of the biological father in the home. (Hockenbury, 2015, p 377). By also he is referring to additional biologic factors such as level of physical activity and body mass index. While it is true that there is much research supporting the concept of earlier puberty tied to absence of the father, there is also significant information about maternal factors which can affect the age of puberty during childhood and adolescence. In addition, there are also factors caused by both parents, together, that can affect the timing of puberty. Research has shown that the absence of fathers leads to earlier puberty in girls. (Bogeart 2005, 2008). In 2005, Anthony Bogeart published a study based on U.S. epidemiological statistics showing that boys and girls go through puberty (manifested by menarche in girls and voice change in boys) at an earlier age when there is no father living with them at age 14. Furthermore, in 2007, Bogeart published a study using statistics from Great Britain. In it, he showed that girls experience menarche earlier when the father is absent. While there are numerous publications on the effects of the absence of the father on puberty, there seems to be little if any published research on the physical absence of the mother in the home and its subsequent effect on the timing of ... • 12. Culture Clash In House Of Sand And Fog By Amy Tan The world has a variety of cultures and religions, and in this generation these different cultures mix. It is not easy for some people to accept these different faiths and morals, however they learn to day by day. In books such as House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the authors convey the theme of the clash of cultures. Writing books about different cultures and the struggle of their acceptance, is crucial for modern society because it gives the world a realistic view on what is actually happening. Perhaps the message the authors are trying to send with the theme of culture clash, is that because of all the different cultures, people should learn to accept the variety. The Shavian Theatre of Ideas (Modern Drama) THE SHAVIAN THEATRE OF IDEAS (MODERN DRAMA) The predominating influence in determining Shaw to turn to the drama was the example of Ibsen and equally prominent was his love of debating, in which he had shown how irresistible it was for him to counter his arguments himself if no one else would. These influential strains compelled him to choose the kind of play in which the characters undertake this dual task of proposer and opposer. In 1892, he made it into Widower s Houses, and thereafter, for nearly sixty years with unflagging energy he made drama peculiarly his own province. Shaw s ideas can never cease to form an important part of his dramatic legacy, any more than we can appreciate Shakespeare without reference to the view of life which lies behind his work. Nevertheless, it is as dramatist upon the stage that Shaw demands primary consideration. In his own day, Shaw s command over audiences which by no means consisted only of those who shared his ideas was an obvious fact. His wit was always subservient to the total working of the genius of the comic playwright. Substance dualism is the belief that the mind and the body are separate entities, consequently, an argument for dualism is that i. minds can experience anger, ii. Nothing physical can experience anger and therefore, minds are not physical. In this examination my goal is to show that minds are physical. I will argue against the second premise, showing that the mind is the brain, which is physical. I will do so by referring to the functionalist school of thought and additionally, by examining the functioning of the brain with regard to research on neuroscience. Furthermore, I will exhibit that substance dualist Rene Descartes work on non human animals is inconsistent with research that shows the existence of mental states in non human animals, thus confirming that minds are physical. Functionalism is the belief that a mental state, such as pain, is to have an internal state which does a certain job (Ravenscroft, 2005, p. 50). For example, the pain that a human being feels and the pain that an octopus feels may have different physical processes within the brain, but the pain is still being felt; in other words, to be in (or have) mental state M is to have an internal state which does the M job (Ravenscroft, 2005, p. 51). Any mental state M is defined in terms of inputs, outputs and internal connections, and for example, the pain role s input may be stepping on a Lego piece, the output may be cursing and finally a possible internal connection, which is the causal link ... • 19. The Process Of Deduction Logic In social research, traditional and non traditional methods are used to explore and examine research queries and relate methods of data collection and observation. One conventionally accepted method is through deductive logic. Deductive logic is research that begins with a theory and arrives at a specific expectation through a series of scientific steps. Both explanatory and exploratory techniques can be used in deductive. In contrast, inductive methods, in which researchers examine specific data sets and detect general patterns, are considered non traditional. In inductive logic, the identification of empirical patterns result in a generalization about some social process (Schutt, 2012, p. 45). The process of deduction logic begins with statements, also known as premises , that are assumed to be true. A determination is made regarding additional factors that must be true if the premises are true. A special logical structure, known as modus ponens, is a rule asserting that a hypothetical proposition according to which if the antecedent be affirmed, the consequent is affirmed (Merriam Webster, 2015). The form of any argument having the structure of modus ponens is as follows: Given P, if P then Q, so, Q. Using this structure, any argument is stated as the major premise, the minor premise, and the conclusion. In this way, the statements are evaluated in terms of validity and soundness. The strength of deductive reasoning is its consideration of validity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Argumentative Essay On Role Playing Games Kids all across America play role playing games that involve shooting each other with water guns which sounds harmless and innocent but some people think different. A select hand of people think that kids and teenagers playing role playing games are violent and could lead the kids into a troubled future, but they really are just harmless. The reasons for why role playing games like senior assassin are harless are that it isn t real killing, it doesn t involve real guns, no one gets hurt, and that it is usually set up by the school that all of the students attend. But on the other hand the people that think that it is violent have no real evidence and only say things like someone could get hurt, but from what the water, and they also say that it involves weapons but that really doesn t mean anything. He was a hopeless romantic and that translated into his poetry and was the theme for most of it aswell, and the poem Any Hope of Ever Seeing you Again is no exception. The poem Any Hope of Ever Seeing you Again portrays two different sides to a story and can be interpreted in many ways due to its style of writing. Eugenio Montale was born in Genoa in 1896. In WWI he wa an infirmary worker and later chief literary critic for Italy with the Corriere Della Sera. He was a music critic, translator and was made a lifetime member of the Italian Senate in 1967. He also won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1975. He died six years later in Milan, 1981. In 1927 he fell in love with a married woman who he nicknamed Mosca which means fly. It is believed that this was borrowed from Ben Jonson s Volpone. Montale stayed devoted to her until her husband died in 1958. They were married until Mosca died five years later. He also met an American author named Irma Brandeis who influences some of his work, which mostly revolves around unattainable love. She made him feel better through the Fascist years, so when they became separated, he used what he was feeling and put it into poetry. Montale wrote his poetry during an era where the theme amor de lonh, love from afar, was popular, which is also tied to donna angelicata or angelic lady. Donna angelicata is mostly tied to communication attempts to an allusive lover. His poems are often really personal, including a lady figure with many names, some of which including Gertu, Liuba, Vixen, Dora and others. Some of the influencers for his poems include Plato, Shakespeare, Petrarch and The Bible. His poems almost always deal with fragmentary experience, the meaning of which is either obsucr or possibly, terrifyingly absent. In Montales Any Hope of Ever Seeing you Again , the last five lines portray strong imagery, which makes the author maybe be destitute or could be seen as the author carrying some kind of burden. Atherosclerosis leads to coronary artery disease, which is a manifestation of ischemic heart disease [1,2]. When an artery narrows, or becomes blocked, intervention is required to restore normal blood flow. In patients with multi vessel coronary artery disease, coronary artery bypass graft surgery in generally accepted as a better method due to the greater risk of developing recurrent ischemic events. However, in those with a single vessel obstruction, the non surgical procedure known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been shown to be as effective in treating stenosis [2]. PCI is achieved using balloon angioplasty, which was first introduced in 1977 [1]. 1.1 Bare Metal Stents (BMS) By the mid 1980 s, bare metal stents (BMS) were developed to overcome the limitations of balloon angioplasty [1]. Coronary stents are metal lattices that hold the vessel open, which prevents recoil following angioplasty [2]. In a way, I somehow understood that these people were lonely and only had so much time left. They just wanted someone who could appreciate them and what they had to say; they wanted to feel like they were of some importance and had a sense of meaning. I cared greatly about what they had to say, even though I didn t understand it that much. More importantly, I cared about their feelings and wellbeing. I can still remember at least two of my mom s patients. One was a man named Lou, and I believe he wore a prosthetic leg. He was a very sweet and dear old man who loved the outdoors. My mom would bring him outside in the mornings to watch the birds and to get some fresh, crisp, morning air. He had become a great friend to the both of us, a bit like a father and ... • 43. An Evolutionary Ethical Theory of Social Risks and... An Evolutionary Ethical Theory of Social Risks and Opportunities ABSTRACT: Social standards guide us in what to do and what to refrain from doing. But can social moral or legal standards be trusted? This paper presents an evolutionary ethical theory that generates trustworthy ethical norms. Each norm is assigned a demonstrable risk, called an ethical risk, that depends on both human behavior and danger to the survival of society. The assigned risk is minimal if and only if everybody obeys the norm. The higher the risk assigned to a norm, the higher the norm s rank (an empirical quantity depending on the evolutionary status of society). An ordered finite set of ethical risks and ethical norms allows the settlement of ethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence in the western world tendencies to violence are rising, corruption [iwd, p.8] is on the increase. And in Germany, for example, a third of all marriages break up, the birth rate is low, the abortion rate is high and every third household consists of a single person [Handelsblatt]. Is the West, as East Asian critics smugly say, a group of newly decaying countries [Wickert, p.19]? If this reproach is right, the decay of a specific society should be avoided by appropriate behaviour patterns. Some of them may be identified already by a thought experiment: If violence, theft or deception are the rule, people and their society go to ruin; the situation is stabilised when everyone helps each other, for then violence or deception are no longer means of survival. Ethics as a theory of rightful dealings involves empirical research on behaviourally conditioned ethical risks, which may depend on the technological level of a society. Each of these ethical risks jeopardizes the survival both of individual citizens and their society as a whole. An ethical risk is a quantity with a certain magnitude; with each ethical risk goes an ethical norm which is the condition for the minimisation of that particular risk. Unfortunately risks are seldom independent from one another. So only the simultaneous observance of various ethical norms minimises all essential collective and individual survival risks. If only a single ethical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Disney s Disney Portfolio Project: Disney Gregory John Pico AMU Disney in other Countries Each country has differences with how their culture plays a factor on how they do business. Rather it is by certain topics being discussed or a certain way people greet one another. When examining the cultural charts of both France and China on http://geert hofstede.com , a U.S. manager can get an idea on how their behavior may need to be modified when communicating with associates from France or China. For example, France scored a 68 on power distance, meaning that children are raised to be dependent on their parents, as well as teachers and to their superiors in the work environment (geert hofstede, 2014). While western economies have governments that promote transparency for doing business, China s Communist Party s rules and regulations have made transparency difficult (Jayaraman, 2009). Large manufacturing companies can come under various and random regulations and bureaucracies, and the Chinese promotes a form of social networking called guanxiwang, where guanxi is the relationship between the individual and the entities of the network (Jayaraman, 2009). With the heavy amount of corruption and the lack of transparency the guanxiwang or the social network with connections with people from the communist party can help western businesses avoid red tape and bureaucracy. The IMF told the international business world that China was doing fine in their transition to a new normal. With the IMF stating that the country was moving towards a slower but safer and more sustainable growth (Porter, 2015). With the risk coming from the Chinese government and their push for more economic reform might prove to be insufficient (Porter, 2015). The leaders in Beijing have stated that if there is further economic change it will lead to inevitably political instability, which doesn t lead to the strongest incentive for government reform. • 47. William Of Orange And James II And The Glorious Revolution Background On July 1 1690, William of Orange and James II led their respective armies into battle at the River Boyne. James II was a Catholic king who gained power in England after King Charles II died in 1685. Many of James opponents were Protestant, and they were strongly against the Catholic monarch. James daughter, Mary, was married to William of Orange, and she was Protestant. For many years, Mary was James only child. This meant that if James II died, she would take the throne. This brought great comfort to the Protestant groups in Ireland, as their ruler would no longer be Catholic. However, when James wife had a son, the crown would be passed to him, and England would have another Catholic monarch. This caused panic and outrage from James Protestant opponents, which led them to invite William of Orange to invade England and overthrow James II (BBC: Battle of the Boyne). William accepted, and he and his army invaded England in November of 1688. The invasion was successful, and William and Mary were awarded the throne as joint monarchs. This event was known as the Glorious Revolution . For a year, James II chose not to fight. Many English nobles were taking the side of William. This made James reluctant to attempt to regain the throne (BBC: Battle of the Boyne). Battle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The flintlock musket. Ironically, the flintlock musket was originally designed for King Louis by a Frenchman named Marin le Bourgeoys. As opposed to matchlock, flintlock muskets didn t require a lit match to ignite the gunpowder. Instead, the flintlock created a spark that did this. The shooter no longer had to use a match to fire the weapon. This increased the fire rate and limited the amount of gunpowder used while shooting.
