OBJECTIVES
 Defining the following terms: Prevention,
promotion, Implementation & Programs
 The Historical perspectives on prevention and
promotion
 The Role and Levels of Preventions
 How can we help to promote our communities
 Community based programme
 Different programs for community development
DEFINITION OF TERMS
 Prevention: The action of stopping something from
happening or arising.
 Promotion: Promotions refer to the entire set of
activities, which communicate the product, brand or
service to the user. The idea is to make people aware,
attract and induce to buy the product, in preference
over others
DEFINITION OF TERMS
 Implementation: an act or instance of implementing
something : the process of making something active
or effective
 Program: The definition of a program is a planned
series of events, a performance or a booklet telling
you what events to expect as part of a series of
events.
The Historical perspectives on prevention
and promotion
 The concept of prevention comes from the field of
public health. This is very different from the medical
model, which refers to the framework of treating
social problems in the same manner that we treat
illness. Community psychologists have long been
critical of the medical model, given its shortcomings
in locating social problems in the individual, which
are often rooted in systematic inequalities.
The Historical perspectives on prevention
and promotion
 The 1960s were a critical point in time for the change
in focus to prevention, rather than treatment, of
individual disease (medical model). During this
point in history, there was a concentrated focus on
social inequality and civil rights, the prevention of
mental health disorders, and the establishment of
innovative prevention programming in the
community.
The Historical perspectives on prevention
and promotion
 The field of prevention was somewhat new to many
in the field of psychology. The public was also not
familiar with this idea as it represented a very
different way of thinking about solving problems.
 In the wake of debates, an abundance of
programming and empirical research surfaced. This
included research on preventive interventions to
reduce mental illness and social problems such as
crime and homelessness.
Role of Prevention
 One of the primary characteristics of the Community
Psychology field is its focus on preventing rather
than just treating social and psychological issues,
and this can occur by boosting individual skills as
well as by engaging in environmental change.
Levels of Preventions
Promoting Our Communities
 Social media is a great, inexpensive, way to
promote recreation activities in your
community, and with the proper tools and
processes in place, it doesn’t have to add
much time to your existing promotional
processes and workflows.
Promoting Our Communities
 With 2.3 billion active social media users in
the world, it’s a good bet your citizens are
using these platforms to engage in your
community. What follows are 19 proven best
practices for promoting your community’s
recreation events using social media.
Promoting Our Communities
 Having a healthy community is important for the
health and protection of the people. A healthy
community can provide access to quality education,
safe homes, lots of employment opportunities,
adequate and safe transportation, fun recreational
activities, as well as quality health care, to the people
living in it.
Promoting Our Communities
 Now, healthy living is defined by the healthy
choices that you make on a daily basis. It is
those choices that keep you healthy, not only
physically but also mentally and spiritually.
If you want to have an idea on how to have a
healthy lifestyle, you can get some advice
and tips on various websites like All About
The Lifestyle, for instance.
Promoting Our Communities
 Of course, it’s important that you know how to live
healthily, but it’s more important that you belong in
a healthy community in order to help reinforce it. A
healthy community encourages families and people
living in it to have healthy habits. Working with
everyone in the community to promote a healthy
lifestyle could bring forth a host of amazing health
benefits to a lot of people.
Promoting Our Communities
 Practicing healthy habits at home
 Growing Organic Food
 Volunteering in the Community
 Shopping in Local Stores
Community Development Programme
Community Based Programme?
 The purpose of this programme is to create an enabling
environment for citizens to participate in improving their
quality of life using their maximum strengths. Community
involvement is at the centre of developmental local
government and Community Based Planning (CBP) is the
main project implemented under this programme. CBP is
the methodology built on local vision, preferred outcomes
and strengths of communities. The process concentrates on
what the community can do for itself, understanding its
resources and making maximum use of its strengths. It is a
process that empowers communities and encourages them
to move away from dependency syndrome.
Community Development Programme
Community Education and Event Planning
Community education can vary from one-time events to
ongoing health talks or a series of risk reduction
workshops (see chapter three).
When planning educational event(s) be sure to consider
costs, materials, location, and what is possible in your
community. With the tools provided, consider
community education options listed below to increase
public awareness of CRC:
Community Development Programme
Continue:
 Host an informational table at a highly visible location
 Host a table at a health fair
 Plan a CRC screening and prevention informational
session
 Plan a series of workshops on CRC education and
awareness
 Work with the Diabetes coordinator or other health,
nutrition, or fitness people to coordinate health classes
or events (e.g., group walking days, cooking classes, or
fitness classes)
Community Development Programme

resources including:
 Health care providers
