How Does Vonnegut Use Humor In Slaughterhouse Five
Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five is a telling work of fiction that blends the author s experiences
with the horror of war with a touch of science fiction and a healthy dose of humor. The novel guides
us through the experiences of a man on a journey in both directions of time, through war, and the
delusions brought on by the horrors therein. The pilgrimage Billy is on is broken up by milestones that
read so it goes . The journey is a vessel for Vonnegut to show the reader how war can desensitize a
man to death and cause him to recede into coping mechanisms, but that a man cannot be desensitized
to suffering. The use of so it goes accompanies all mentions of a death in the book, between the death
of his own father, soldiers he served with, and even eventual loss of the universe. It shows the variety
of death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If this sort of selectivity had been possible for Billy, he might have chosen as his happiest moment his
sun drenched snooze in the back of the wagon (Vonnegut 141), this is the same wagon that is
described as a green coffin . These two things coupled together show that Billy would be content in
death. However, what makes this more interesting is the contrast with the moment when the pressures
of all he has lived through become too great and causes his emotional dam to break. After being
bombarded with death to the point of acceptance, the thing that finally causes Billy to break down is
the suffering of an animal. The horses drawing his coffin on wheels along are near death with thirst
and exhaustion. When it is pointed out to Billy, it is a breaking point after a backlog of an entire wars
worth of horrors. Later on, as a middle aged Optometrist, he would weep quietly and privately
sometimes (Vonnegut 197). The softness of the reaction speaks magnitudes about the depth of the

The Plight Of Low Income Individuals And Their Families
Saul Alvarez English 101 The Plight of Low Income Individuals and Their Families According to the
PRB article U.S. Low Income Working Families Increasing , 42.7% of people live below the poverty
line, with 32.1% of them living 200% below the poverty line; this group is categorized as the low
income group.(PRB) 59% of low income working families have one or more minority parents. Living
in a low income community limits one s standard of living through academic gaps, the selection of
food available, an ever present fear of victimization , and a lack of resources available to both children
and adults. The differences in academic gaps between children and teenagers from low income
neighborhoods and affluent neighborhoods present themselves in the schools the students attend. A
study by the Department of Education showed that students in low income areas did not have access to
the same rigorous courses, and when they did, the resources available to the low income students was
lacking compared to the resources the students in high income neighborhoods had access to. In the
low income areas black and Hispanic students were twice as likely to have teachers with less
experience, with one or two years in the profession, compared to schools in affluent neighborhoods
with well to do white students. Another thing increasing the academic gap is that only 22 percent of
local districts reported offering pre kindergarten or other early learning programs for low income
children.

Importance And Importance Of Maintenance Management
Maintenance Management is an orderly and systematic approach to planning, organizing, monitoring
and evaluating maintenance activities and their costs. A good maintenance management system
coupled with knowledgeable and capable maintenance staff can prevent breakdown problems and
environmental damage; yield longer asset life with fewer breakdowns; and result in lower operating
costs and a higher quality of heavy machinery.
Importance
Maintenance management is crucial to companies because proper maintenance makes workers aware
of the resources with which they have to work. When workers are aware of the cost and nature of their
maintenance resources, they are less likely to be wasteful with those resources. They also are more
aware of how their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ideally, the maintenance management system should be able to record maintenance tasks and
inventory/resources, provide feedback to the facilities operations manager for analysis, and support
the needs of the company and its customers. Computerized maintenance management software
programs often can meet these requirements and greatly reduce the amount of work necessary
compared to manual systems.
The word Operation is usually linked with Maintenance . To put these terms in context, Operation is
the performance of work or services and the provision of materials and energy to ensure the day to day
proper functioning of an asset, e.g., the work activities, associated chemicals and electricity to run a
water treatment plant. As such, it has a direct but simple impact on the cost of operating an asset.
Maintenance is the work performed on an asset such as a road, building, utility or piece of equipment
to preserve it in as near to its original condition as is practical and to realize its normal life expectancy.
This Technical Information Document, as its name implies, concentrates on maintenance management
systems only. In general, maintenance can be classified into the following

Essay On Gelato
Gelato has an interesting history and originally dates back to frozen treats and desserts of Sicily in
Italy, Egypt, and even ancient Rome; in which it was produced from the ice and snow of mountaintops
before being brought down and preserved below ground level to keep it cold. Gelato soon became
popular among a large portion of the population of Italian cities, one in particular was Florence.
Nevertheless, its popularity only began to increase between the 1920s and 1930s before the first gelato
cart was developed in the city of Varese.
1. Gelato was produced back in the 16th century
That s right, gelato dates as far back as to the 16th century. However there has always been a minor
amount of confusion as to where gelato first originated from and who really invented it. Typically
credit has always been handed to a man native to Florence, called Bernardo Buontalenti; who
supposedly delighted the court of Catherina dei Medici with the tasty frozen dessert. Nevertheless,
Italians have always been credited with introducing gelato to America and also the rest of Europe.
2. Gelato isn t ice cream.
Most individuals believe that gelato means ice cream in Italian, which is false. Regardless of their
similarities, ice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

giving gelato a far more intense flavor than traditional ice creams. Gelato is also far healthier than
traditional American style ice cream, this is due to all the natural ingredients it contains, the fewer
calories and less butter fat that it takes to produce it. Gelato is commonly served at a slightly warmer
temperature than ice cream, usually around 10 to 15 degrees respectively. Since Gelato isn t as solid as
ice cream, its taste and flavors are enhanced further as it slowly melts in your

The Effects Of Repetitive Head Impact On Athletes Essay
Over the years, the demand for research on the cognitive and neuropathological consequences of
repetitive head impacts in athletes has been an uprise in the sports medicine field. A concussion is
caused by a direct blow to the head or another body region, resulting in a sudden acceleration and
deceleration of the craniocervical complex ().It is estimated that each year between 1.6 and 3.8 million
athletes in the United States suffer a concussion in sport, however, it is still considered an
underestimation due to many injuries going unrecognized or unreported by players. The sports related
concussion has gained primary attention from the media due to the potential dangers and long term
consequences of the impact. For example, the movie concussion was released in December 2015 start

Mountain Man Essay
Currently, because the market of traditional beer is decreasing with an annual rate of 4%, whereas the
market of light beer is increasing, Mountain Man is thinking to extend its product line to light bear.
However, we don t know if it is a good idea because of the difficulty transferring the brand equity and
the uncertainty of cannibalization and dilution. I suggest we should still extend the brand and launch
Mountain Man light in following process.
First of all, Mountain Man light should target on female and younger generation. According to the
profile of beer drinkers, females account for 42% of light beer drinkers and those who are younger
than 35 years old account for 29%, which means the total proportion of them is as high as 58.8%.
Thus, Mountain Man light should choose them as our target. Second, we focus its positioning on Pure

younger people are willing to pay twice of the price than those over 35 and it also stand for high

expensive than lager, it s not expensive at all, compared to those famous companies. According to the
market share (barrels) and total sales of beer, Mountain Man supposed to earn $191 million dollars,
but their actual sales is much lower than it, which means Mountain Man Lager is cheaper than the
average price (Appendix2). Next, choose restaurants and bars as the main selling channel of Mountain
Man light, and also sell it in off premise locations. The reason why we decide it is because people tend
to drink light beer with meal and because selling

Wondrous Things About Beethoven Beethoven
Wondrous things about Beethoven Beethoven s best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5
piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, his great Mass the Missa
solemnis and an opera, Fidelio. Beethoven was a German composer. Beethoven is important because
he sparked a new path within music. Why was Beethoven s music so unique? This is because he was
very studious about his music. He started at eight and continued learning from then forward. Without
Beethoven, the music that is here today would not be here. Beethoven s life At an early age Beethoven
had it rough. When he was just seventeen Ludwig s father lost his job and his mother and baby sister

His music has been played all over the world for over 180 years (Aaron Green). This shows that while
he was alive and even after death, his music was and still is loved, well known, and will always be
remembered. Because of Beethoven s disdain for authority, and for social rank. He stopped
performing at the piano if the audience chatted amongst themselves, or afforded him less than their
full attention. At soirées, he refused to perform if suddenly called upon to do so. Eventually, after
many confrontations, the Archduke Rudolph decreed that the usual rules of court etiquette did not
apply to Beethoven (wikipedia). Because Beethoven did this it means that he was a special case
because he was a special person. Beethoven came into the attention Count Ferdinand Von Waldstein
who became a lifelong friend and financial supporter. He also befriended Anton Reicha, a flautist and
violinist of about his own age who was a nephew of the court orchestra s conductor, Josef Reicha.
Perhaps Beethoven s most important aristocratic patron was Archduke Rudolph, the youngest son of
Emperor Leopold II, who in 1803 or 1804 began to study piano and composition with Beethoven. The
cleric (Cardinal Priest) and the composer became friends, and their meetings continued until 1824.
Beethoven dedicated 14 compositions to Rudolph His teachers He received piano lessons from Tobias
Friedrich Pfeiffer, and Franz Roventini gave him violin and viola lessons (Aaron Green).

Overview of the Arab Culture Essay
Name of Culture Arab is not a race, but is a group of individuals that are united by their culture and
history (ADC, 2014). There are many different variations commonly based on a particular individual s
country of origin such as Arab Americans. Other variations are based on their social class, the level of
their education, if they live urbanely or rurally, or the time they have spent in the United States
(Lipson Dubble, 2007). Most Arabs also practice Islamic religion and are Muslim. When working with
an Arab or Muslim client, nurses should ask what the client wishes to be referred to so as not to offend
them in any way (Lipson Dubble, 2007).

If unsure how to address the patient, the nurse should ask how a friend or distant relative would
address them. Adults and elderly may have other preferences like mother or father, followed by the
first name of their eldest son. When approaching an Arab, it is acceptable to shake their hand, smile,
and offer direct eye contact. Although the patient may avoid these gestures, they are not viewed as
offensive (Lipson Dubble, 2007).
Historical Background Prompting Immigration Arabs began arriving in the United States in the early
1800s. The first large wave arrived between 1887 1913. Many single, uneducated men were included
in this large wave if immigrants. They were arriving from Greater Syria in search of a better job and a
higher standard of living (Lipson Dubble, 2007). The next wave of Arab immigrants came to the
United States from 1940 1970. This wave of immigrants was driven by the political events and wars
going on in their home countries; many of these immigrants were refugees. In 1948 the creation of the
State of Israel drastically increased the amount of Arab Muslim immigrants (Lipson Dubble, 2007).
The third marked wave of Arab immigrants came from 1970 2000. This wave was also driven by wars
and economic and political circumstances that were quickly deteriorating. The majority of these
immigrants were professions of high education (Lipson Dubble, 2007). Between 1982 1989, the

Modern Landscape Design Is The Arrangement Of Environments...
Modernism, in the context of landscape design, is a result of forms and functions that reflect the need
for outdoor living spaces that enhance contemporary lifestyles. As Garrett Eckbo, one of the central
figures in modern landscape architecture, said, landscape design is the arrangement of environments
for people.
Contemporary garden design tends to focus on scale as opposed to formal landscape designs that are
based on axial relationships. It also foregoes the more classic landscape design forms and larger scale
from Greek, Roman, and classical architecture traditions. This design motif became popular in the
1950 s baby boom, particularly in California where weather and lifestyle was very conducive to this
innovative style.
In modern landscape design, boundaries between areas of color, textures and shapes are undefined or
conversely, sharply defined. Color and composition create the emotional response. Combining
freshness and flair, these designs use dramatic geometric shapes to create a point of view that is fluid
and natural. Water and light are often used, as in artfully lit outdoor water fountains, to enhance the
sensual loveliness and liveliness. The designs are arresting, both close up and far away.
Form and Function in Modern Landscape Design
As the maxim says, form follows function. Modern landscape design is an aesthetic that shows only
what is necessary while often leaving surfaces exposed. The simplicity of modern design reveals itself
in that every form

Secondary Infections Of Flu Essay
What are the Secondary Infections of the Flu?
As most people know, the flu is a highly contagious disease that hits hard, invading the upper
respiratory tract, and in many cases, spreading to the lungs. The flu generally lasts a week, or more,
and during that time you might experience high fevers, headaches, body aches, sore throat, cough,
stuffy or runny nose, and tiredness. What most people don t know is that while their body is fighting
off a flu virus, it becomes highly vulnerable to developing secondary bacteria caused infections. When
your body is combating a viral infection, chemicals are released that may interfere with bacteria
killing cells. Along with that, the respiratory tract lining has been disrupted, and the mucus

Bacterial Otitis
Bacterial otitis, or ear infection, often follows the flu, particularly in children. Bacterial otitis

Bacterial infections are accompanied by a variety of symptoms, such as ear pain, lingering cough,

The Inborn Names Of The Morongo Reservation
Set at the extremity of the striking San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains, the Morongo Indian
Reservation extends more than 35,000 acres and overlooks the desert vistas of the Banning Pass. Wild
buckwheat, mesquite and chaparral still flourish here, and the ubiquitous breeze ensures that the air is
always fresh and clear.
One of the inborn names of the Morongo Reservation was Malki, and it was located in what was once
called the Wanikik territory. In the mid 19th century, the Serrano people to the north began journeying
to the Malki settlement. They brought with them the Morongo name derivative from the Serrano name
for their people, Maringayam. Since the late 19th century, the Morongo Reservation has been tenanted
by a mix of Cahuilla, Serrano, Luiseno and Cupeno people.
Irrepressible and ingenious, the Morongo tribe has overcome many hardships. The Morongo
Reservation was one of nine small reservations set aside by President Grant by Executive Order in
1865. The lands taken into trust by the federal government did not include land with access to surface
water. Accordingly, tribal members had to travel miles each day just to acquire water and to forage for
food. Through their industriousness and capability to survive in an unstable physical and political
environment, the Morongo tribe began a small bingo venture in 1983.
On February 25, 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that neither the state of California nor

My Best Friends Big Day Essay
My Best Friends Big Day My best friend, Malory, and I have been best friends for twelve years.
Malory was like the sister I never had. We did absolutely everything together; you very rarely spotted
one of us without the other tagging along. Sadly, in March of 2014 my best friend was stolen from me.
The thief s name was Jordan. He practically swept her off her feet and took off running with her.
When you were around them you couple almost feel the love in the room, and when they looked at
each other you could see the sparkle in their eyes. On September 7th, 2015 they were on a trip to Fort
Lee Virginia. They were out eating dinner and when dessert came out it was a slice of cake and a plate
with the words Will You Marry Me? . Of course she said yes, but that was the day I realized I was
going to have to give my best friend away to her better half. I could not believe we were planning a
wedding; I could have sworn we were just two little blonde headed goofballs that swore that boys had
cooties. It started to sink in the day she picked out her wedding dress. I was unable to go with her
when she picked it out, but when I received a picture of her in the dress I cried like a baby. The dress
was an off white, floor length lace gown that fit her like a glove. Not only did I cry because she looked
beautiful, but because it was one step closer to the big day. Shortly after she picked out her gown she
texted me asking if I would be her maid of honor. Even though I pretty much

Relativity Of Truth In Life Of Pi
Life of Pi: The Relativity of Truth
The relativity of truth refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths.
The truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference. An example of truth relativism is
the The Dress trend which went viral because viewers disagreed over whether the colors of the dress
were black and blue or gold and white. Because of how a human perceives the color, it could be either
of these colors based on how a person sees it. The relativity of truth in the Life of Pi includes and
refers to the Blind Frenchman , the algae island, and which story Pi told the interviewers was true.
To begin, when Pi went blind in chapter 90 and practically gave up on surviving, he heard a voice. It s
astonishing what you hear when you re alone in the blackness of your dying mind. (Martel, Pg 242).
To people, this could refer to Pi hearing an actual person or it could just be a figment of his
imagination. Misery loves company, and madness calls it forth. (Martel, Pg 242). This adds to the
theory that the voice Pi heard was just a figment of his imagination. Further on in the novel, Pi meets
and speaks to the Blind Frenchman after figuring out that it wasn t Richard Parker he was talking to.
Later on, Richard Parker killed the Frenchman and Pi explored his boat, finding out that the
Frenchman had lied to him about having food. What doesn t add up is that Pi regained his eyesight
two days after the Frenchman s murder and when he went to check out the dead man s boat, he was
still blind. This could mean that Pi didn t actually go on the Frenchman s boat but was actually
exploring his boat and that the man was a figment of his imagination to suppress the loneliness Pi was
feeling.
Furthermore, in chapter 92, Pi discovers an algae island with food to eat and land to settle on. Pi stated
...that the island was not an island in the conventional sense of the term that is, a small landmass
rooted to the floor of the ocean but was rather a free floating organism... (Martel, Pg 271 272). One
could assume that this wasn t an actual island, but something that Pi made up to add depth to the story
he was telling or this was an island that has never been

Coordination Plan
3. Coordination Plan There is a multitude of reasons for an organization to have a business continuity
plan in place. The incident does not really matter whether it is natural or manmade disaster/incident
but if an incident occurs, it can have a disastrous effect causing the company operation to become
unstable and having the inability to contain or control its impact can halt the business routine (Vacca,
2013).
Also, creating a good working relationship with the law enforcement can assist in aiding an
organization with an incident. Although organizations will sometimes not notify or include LE with

Use of advanced security information and event management solution is in place in order to capture
any anomaly or detect nefarious activities within the network (Abelar, 2014).
Other considerations to take to make sure that network intrusion is detected and/mitigated is by

Critique Of Characters In Cobalt Blue By Sachin Kundalkar
I put down Sachin Kundalkar s Cobalt Blue a couple of days ago and the characters continue to haunt
me. Kundalkar has so vividly painted them into my mind that they seem to have made a home for
themselves in there. Over the next couple of days, I have found myself reaching out for the book, re
reading paragraphs at random and with every read I feel like I have opened a whole new world. I have
been musing at the simplicity and the beauty of the story, and I have concluded that no review could
ever do justice to the gem that is this work.
Cobalt Blue was originally written and published in Marathi by Sachin Kundalkar when he was only
22 years old (his age is of no importance, until you put down the book and realise that someone wrote
a book so profound and meaningful when he was at the same age as you). For almost ten years the
book remained a treasure to only those who spoke Marathi, till Jerry Pinto, at Shanta Gokhale s
request translated it into English. A lot is lost in translation, a fact that is acknowledged by Pinto in his
afterword. However, Pinto took extra care to retain the essence of the novel, which is something that
those who are not fluent in Marathi would appreciate. Teresa Lavender Fagan, translator, says, A

what must necessarily be lost. The paradox of translation: the desire to replicate a work in one s own

Hell In The Gospel Of John, And St. Thomas Aquinas
Hell is recognized as an extremely difficult doctrine for many to accept, due to its nature of opposing
the very notion of a benevolent God. Although God grants the gift of mercy and infinite love to all, a
soul can be damned to Hell due to the gift of free will and the rejection of God s love. In the teachings
and works of the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and St. Thomas Aquinas, the
interpretation of Heaven and its counterpart Hell are found in their attempt to explain the contradictory
essence of God s altruistic love and the potential of eternal punishment. It has been clearly denoted
that the Gift of God s free will is the primary reason for one condemning themselves to Hell or
entering the Kingdom of God in Heaven. God s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapters five and seven of the Book of Matthew, it reveals that some may not be granted entrance to
the Kingdom of Heaven after facing judgment. An analogy is made that the good tree of heaven
cannot possibly bear bad fruit just like a bad tree cannot bear that of good fruit. Every tree that does
not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them
(Matthew 7: 19 20) indicating the tradition view of Hell being a dark, fiery, pit of depraved spirits. In
the Gospel of Mark, Hell is referred to as Gehenna which is a term associated in Hebrew scripture that
dictates it a place of the wicked. Hell is a place where God s judgment has inscribed the sin filled life

the parable of the rich man and lazarus, the rich man whom deemed to hell requests to warn his
brothers of the afterlife, Then Abraham said, If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither
will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead (Luke 16: 31). This draws a similar
comparison to the rejection of Jesus s resurrection in the greatest sacrifice to repent for all humankind

Discounted Cash Flow
discounted cash flow (DCF
In finance, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is a method of valuing a project, company, or asset
using the concepts of the time value of money. All future cash flows are estimated and discounted to
give their present values (PVs) the sum of all future cash flows, both incoming and outgoing, is the net
present value (NPV), which is taken as the value or price of the cash flows in question.
Using DCF analysis to compute the NPV takes as input cash flows and a discount rate and gives as
output a price; the opposite process taking cash flows and a price and inferring a discount rate, is
called the yield.
Discounted cash flow analysis is widely used in investment finance, real estate development, and
corporate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using the DPV formula above (FV=$150,000, i=0.05, n=3), that means that the value of $150,000
received in three years actually has a present value of $129,576 (rounded off). In other words we
would need to invest $129,576 in a T Bond now to get $150,000 in 3 years almost risk free. This is a
quantitative way of showing that money in the future is not as valuable as money in the present
($150,000 in 3 years isn t worth the same as $150,000 now; it is worth $129,576 now).
Subtracting the purchase price of the house ($100,000) from the present value results in the net present
value of the whole transaction, which would be $29,576 or a little more than 29% of the purchase
price.
Another way of looking at the deal as the excess return achieved (over the risk free rate) is (14.5%
5.0%)/(100%+5%) or approximately 9.0% (still very respectable).
But what about risk?
We assume that the $150,000 is John s best estimate of the sale price that he will be able to achieve in
3 years time (after deducting all expenses, of course). There is of course a lot of uncertainty about
house prices, and the outcome may end up higher or lower than this estimate.
(The house John is buying is in a good neighborhood, but market values have been rising quite a lot
lately and the real estate market analysts in the media are talking about a slow down and higher
interest rates. There is a probability that John might not be able to get the full

Dead Wake Book Report
Larson, Erik. Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, 2015. New York: Crown Publishers,
2015, 430 pp. Erik Larson s purpose of Dead Wake is to create a real life feel of the events that
actually occurred on the Lusitania. It seems as if he wanted to take the evidence he acquired and create
a story that would capture readers attention by the emotional connection with the characters and
provide them with a map, letters, and other documents. He also seemed to want to educate his readers
not only on the sinking of the ship, but all of the events that happened on the days it were at sail.
Although he wrote nonfiction, he makes it as real as he can with all of the telegrams he provides. I
think Larson s scope of the book is to educate in a way that is enjoyable for his readers. Larson covers
some of the events leading up to the sail of the Lusitania, the actual events at sea, views from the
German s U boats, and the tragic events that occurred in the end. He explains ... Show more content

I do not believe the general public would be interested in or shown this book without some knowledge

history, I think they would find this book right up their alley. Overall, Larson s Dead Wake is a book
that keeps you wanting to read more. The audience will feel a sense of page turning anxiety while
reading through this. He did a fantastic job turning history into a book that is enjoyable and created a
real life feel. He kept the story dramatic and detailed. His knowledge on this subject is shown by all of
his sources, which stand out to readers who need reassurance. I have to give him props for how hard
he worked to create a book that could shed light on the events that happened on the Lusitania. Dead

Essay about Justice On Trial in Kafka s The Trial
Justice On Trial in Kafka s The Trial
There is no such thing as justice in or out of court. Clarence Darrow i
Most often critically interpreted as a search for Divine justice, Kafka s The Trial, a fragmented and
unfinished novel, appears to leave us with the same impression as the words above of Clarence
Darrow. In other words, there is no justice. This assessment of Divine justice by Kafka works on two
levels. On one level, he is illustrating the helpless nature of the individual when in conflict against an
established bureaucracy. On another level, he is illustrating the existential dilemma of man in the face
of a godless, indifferent, and often hostile universe. A search for justice by Josef K. finds no justice in

as he attempts to maneuver the bureaucratic system. In vain, much as many people try to find meaning
and justice out of court, Josef K. s efforts to discover why he is accused and must suffer are in vain.
Yet, his character and his sins are conventional, and he has no bold or threatening ambitions. All he
can do is ask questions, but he receives no answers that would clarify the bureaucratic system into
which he has been thrust. Just like existential awareness undermines the entire rational structure of
Divine justice, so, too, the alternative hypotheses, the multiple explanations, the different
interpretations, and the uncertainty Josef K. experiences, serve to undermine the whole rational
structure of the justice system. Josef K. comes to understand the socially constructed, arbitrary, and
absurd nature of the justice system, and, justice itself The truth allegedly resides above the realms of
justice and injustice. iii This literary analysis will focus on how Josef K. s experiences in The Trial
demonstrate not only the corrupt justice system of the era but also the absurd and futile attempt to seek
an arbitrary concept like justice in an existential realm.
KAFKA WORLDVIEW OF JUSTICE IN THE TRIAL
The Trial has an immediate ability to engage the emotions of the reader because the protagonist, Josef

William Shakespeare s The Taming Of The Shrew Essay
Shakespeare wrote his plays without a thought that they would ever not be performed on stage. Many
of Shakespeare s plays have been performed since his death 400 years ago. And with time comes
advances, as many of Shakespeare s play have been adapted from text to film. Some films take
Shakespeare s original plot and twist it to be more modern, while others stick with the classic. In
Franco Zeffirelli s 1968 film version of The Taming of the Shrew, he recreates Shakespeare s loved
play. Although Zeffirelli stays close to Shakespeare s original text, he does omit and add lines and
scenes that weren t originally in the play. Zeffirelli also adds body language and stage directions
where they aren t in the play. These directorial decisions change the way the romance looks between
Katherina and Petruccio in the text. The relationship between the two characters in Zeffirelli s film is
attempted to be seen as more consensual than in the text. Shakespeare s play The Taming of the Shrew
begins with an Induction that isn t in Zeffirelli s film. The Induction in the film starts with a beggar
named Christopher Sly who is very drunk and hasn t paid his bill. He gets kicked out of the tavern and
picked up by a Lord who decides to play a trick on Sly. The trick that the Lord plays on Sly is to have
him believe he has been sick for so long that he has become a Lord himself. The Lord decides to treat
Sly to a play, which is The Taming of the Shrew. Shakespeare decides to use this as a form

Love In Frankenstein
Giving your child the love it deserves comes from within us. What if the child is not your biological
child? Would you treat it like it is your own? In the story of Mary Shelley you are able to read that it is
hard for Frankenstein to give his creature the love and support it needs. Frankenstein did not even
name his creature. When people hear Frankenstein they immediately think of the creature, yet the
doctor his name is Frankenstein. Is it really a mistake to think the creature as the monster, or is
Frankenstein the real monster?

different than all the other people. The monster looks horrific. That his creation would look like a

someone who resurrected from the death? You still need to give it the love it deserves. As a parent, it
is your job to love your child endlessly even though it makes mistakes. Frankenstein isn t a real father,
isn t a real creator. He made the creature, this means he is responsible for the creature. Frankenstein
did wrong by leaving it to his fate. It is true that monster makes terrible decisions. And that he does
murder certain people. Yet by having done this, he did get the attention from his father figure, which is
what he wanted. He needed a bit of love. And he was capable of doing anything to get this love.
It is true that the creature did take some terrible decisions. The monster killed people and it hurt
people. Yet he only did this, because he was hurt. His father figure abandoned him, no one accepted
him. If now a days people are bullied they stand up for themselves too. The monster did this as well.

Indian River Citrus Company (A) Indian River Citrus Company is a leading producer of fresh, frozen,

behind his desk, was Buy land. They aren t making any more of it. He practiced what he preached, but

The Geographic, Political, and Ethnic Impact European...
There is an ongoing debate on how the current political and economic failures in Africa can be traced
back to the advent of colonialism. There is a great deal of evidence that illustrates the impact that
colonialism and foreign intervention has had a negative effect on the development of present history
of Africa. This essay will attempt to examine the geographic, political and ethnic impact European
colonialism has played on the development of the African, and how these contributions have put
Africa on its current trajectory.
Initial European interest in Africa appeared humanitarian. Many of the imperial nations seemed

Several European nations took it upon themselves to assimilate the people of Africa to what the
Europeans considered as civilized. Peter Schraeder put it best in his essay, Political and Economic
Impacts of Colonialism, when he said, Britain s portrayal of its efforts as the whites man s burden and
France s pronouncement of its mission civilisatrice , were offered to justify European domination over
peoples deemed backward, ignorant, uncivilized, barbaric, savage, and godless heathen. It certainly
makes one wonder why a nation would take the role of a protectorate if it viewed the people they were
trying to protect in that light. This may also explain the why Britain established the institutions and
practices they did during colonial rule. One of the most significant institutions introduced by the
colonial powers as a method to civilize the Africans was the implementation of the nation state
system. Pre colonial African was full of nations and kingdoms, which varied in respect to their polities
and general structure. For instance, some lived in small families or clans, with authority and
leadership assigned to the elders, while others governed under kingdoms that encompassed large
areas. In pre colonial Uganda, there were several kingdoms ranging from the Buganda to the Ankole
and even the Toro. However, before the advent of present day Uganda, the area was a heterogeneous

The Evolution Of The Human Race
Faith Vs. Fact The universe is a vast and endless portal of knowledge and experience whose origin and
creation is not fully proven. There are two ideologies that the human race has adopted into giving
reason for our existence as well as our evolution; this being, religion, and science. Science and
religion have been in a conflicting battle against each other in discovering truth about the universe and
their main ideas disregard the other making them ultimately incompatible. Throughout history this
conflict has been proven through, Galileo s sentence of house arrest in 1632 over his claim of a sun
centered solar system, to the more recent Scopes Monkey Trial, in 1925; that lead to the great debate
between Darrow and Jennings Bryan over the teaching of evolution in schools, (Coyne beginning).
Not all religions primarily focus on the dismissing of scientific notions of truth and the opposition to
science, and this is where accomodationism, is introduced. That said, it is a belief by those that think
that there can be a compromise between two opposing perspectives, and in this case it being science
and religion and both contributing to the theory of evolution. Jerry A. Coyne is an evolutionary
biologist that has made claims that science and religion will never be able to have compatibility, but
views not that religion and science have always been implacable enemies, with the former always
hindering the latter. Instead, he sees them as making overlapping claims , each

staying in the hospital. The dangers about this sport is getting punched in the head and stomach
multiply times that can lead to broken ribs, swelling, painful stomach pains, hemming, skull fractures,
concussion, broken nose, and jaw bones. Boxers risk their lives to put on a show for the fans, but the
loser gets paid less or might not get paid depending on the contract. A boxer s worst fear is getting

John Calvin s Influence On Church History
What Influence did John Calvin have on Church History? John Calvin was born on July 10, 1509 at
Noyon, in Picardy, which is the northern providence of France, located 60 miles northeast of Paris. If
you do the math, next July of 2009 the Christendom would celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth
of Calvin, which many Bible conferences around the world are already preparing for next year. Calvin
entered the University Of Paris at the age of 14, and mastered almost everything he turned his
attention to, including a brilliant writing style and masterful skill in logic and logical argument. At the
age of 19, he graduated with his Master of Arts degree. And at the age of 22, he mastered a classical

That is very obvious when you read through his expositional commentaries on the Bible. However, for
many centuries prior to the Reformation, the typical hermeneutical methods were allegorizing and
spiritualizing the text. Having such methods, the church can say about anything she wants to believe
what the Bible says and means. Such hermeneutical gymnastics was a license for much of
ecclesiastical abuses. But for Calvin, the meaning of the text was the meaning of the text. What drove
him to handle the Word with such precision was due to his commitment to biblical exegesis. In fact, he
is considered the father of the modern day grammatico historical method of hermeneutics. To answer
what grammatical historical hermeneutics is, it is simply an interpreting rule in which the interpreter
considers the historical context and grammatical structure for the specific text that he wishes to
understand the way that the biblical author originally intended to convey. Calvin understood that
without the proper exegesis of Scripture, there is no expositional preaching. In other words, biblical
exegesis is the foundational work for proper expository

understand how to truly connect. ENFJ This personality trait reflects many strong characteristic in

Diffusion And Osmosis Paper
Particles are moving atoms; thus they have a habit of moving from areas of high concentration to areas
of low concentration. This principle is divided into two classifications: diffusion and osmosis.
Diffusion is the movement of substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower
concentration and they become evenly distributed throughout both regions (Biology Department,
2015).Furthermore Osmosis is the movement of free water from an area of higher concentration to an
area of lower concentration across a semi permeable membrane (Biology Department, 2015).Diffusion
and osmosis regulate the quantity of solutes that are in the solvent from moving in and out of the cell
in aqueous solutions. Solvents are the disperse agents while solutes are the disperse substances; these
substances are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tonicity is the capacity of a nearby solution that causes a cell to gain or lose water; it relies on the
concentration of the solute that cannot pass through the membrane (Reece et al., 2014).A hypertonic
solution is when the solution has a higher concentration then the solute which causes the water to
move away from the cell which results in a shriveled cell. A hypotonic solution is when the solute has
a higher concentration than the solution which causes the cell to expand and swell (Mao, 2008).
Nevertheless an isotonic solution is when the concentration of the solute and solution are equal. The
category of the cell relies on the effect of osmosis on the cell. The hypotonic solution will take up
water if an animal cell is placed in the solution, which will cause it to swell, gets larger and eventually
lyse. For the Animal cells, leaning to die proceeded by failing in keeping water and shrinking are the
findings in the process of a hypertonic solution. Nonetheless, when a plant cell is placed in

The Importance Of The Tower Of Babel
The most segregated place is Sunday service, what does that say about the God you worship? Lecrae;
Dirty Water
Too many one might think that the Tower of Babel is about God punishing people, and in a way it
was. The confusion that God placed on the people was something made to humble the people trying to
be at the same height of God. But the realities are that we have made strides in the list of human
achievements that have surpassed the height of the tower of Babel, and through that singular event,
culture had erupted onto the earth.
The shift of being like God has changed from a physical one to a psychological one. Our idea of our
ability to be god like has inflated people in our lives. From the people, we expect evil from like Hitler
and Stalin, and from people who might not be as obvious as religious leaders and people in mentoring
positions in our lives.
We don t worship for God, but for ourselves was a quote from Joel Osteen s Wife, her message is a
simple one worship God for the feelings that derive from it, not to elicit humbling praise for the grace
that God has hand delivered us.
The dislocation in the church has been something of an issue since the beginning of the church in
Acts. Steven was killed giving a list of issues that he found in the church (Acts 7), and Martin Luther,
and many other have died at the hands of the church. Yet, my statement remains; Our battle has
changed from a physical one to a psychological one.
The point of the tower of

Asians And Asian American Culture
This class helped me realize how ignorant I really was about the Asian American culture as well as the
Native American culture. I generally believed that I was more culturally sound than I actually am. I
believed that I knew more about these cultures than I really did and was shocked to realize that I fed
into some of the stereotypes. I knew that Asian Americans did well academically because their parents
valued education and had them study more than their peers, however I did not realize that culturally
boys were expected to succeed more academically than girls were. I believed that girls were equally
held up to a standard as boys were. Watching the film clips related to Asians and Asian Americans was
an eye opening experience. Just as African Americans are told that their natural hair is not good
enough and it is internalized, it appears it is the same for many Asian Americans in relation to their
eyes. The film clip about the young girl being taken to have plastic surgery on her eyes at the age of
12 because she felt that she would be more beautiful was a heart breaking scene to watch. It never
occurred to me that a feature that is specific to that particular group would become something that has
almost become shameful to a lot of people. To have an eye surgery is a serious decision one has to
make and for that little girl to be so sure that she wants her eyes operated on at 12 years old was
something that I could relate to, but not understand. I also did not realize

The Conflict And Conflict Management Strategies
Robbins and Judge define conflict as a process that begins when one party perceives another party has
or is about to negatively affect something that is cared about. There is a variety of conflicts that
individuals will encounter within their lives. Knowing and understating the conflict cycle and
understanding conflict management strategies will help individuals solve conflict in a reasonable
manner (Robbins Judge, 2014).
Discussing Contentious Issues/ Bringing Conflict into the Open When managers are faced with
discussing contentious issues or having to bring up conflict within their organizations, there are
several steps that they can take to ensure that all goes smoothly. A process should be put in place that
ensures that all individuals feel safe when bringing up ideas and thoughts. Managers must prepare and
plan for what might come their way. Goals and objectives of the discussion must be clear to all
involved. Goals should be put in writing and a range of potential outcomes should be shared (Robbins
Judge, 2014, p. 315 316). Next ground rules should be established. Grounds rules are a list of expected
behaviors that individuals must portray during a discussion/meeting. The following are a list of ground
rules that could be helpful when discussing contentious issues.
Don t interrupt
Give everyone equal time to speak
No outside interruptions (cell phones, etc.)
Be respectful of other people s opinions
Address the issue, don t attack the

Comparison of Plato, Aquinas, Aristotle and Augustine
Plato Truth and Reality And isn t it a bad thing to be deceived about the truth, and a good thing to
know what the truth is? For I assume that by knowing the truth you mean knowing things as they
really are. Truthfulness. He will never willingly tolerate an untruth, but will hate it as much as he loves
truth... And is there anything more closely connected with wisdom than truth? (Plato, 380BC)

Reason What reason engages in is always its own manifestation, be that language with its power of
signification or be that harmonious numbers. In and through the sciences, reason searches for itself.
Reason s true object is reason itself. Reason never simply deals with physical or historical objects as
such.it manifests itself in culture and nature.
World/Universe Everything in the universe was created simultaneously by God, and not in seven
calendar days like a plain account of Genesis would require but the six day structure of creation
presented in the book of Genesis represents a logical framework, rather than the passage of time in a
physical way it would bear a spiritual, rather than physical, meaning, which is no less literal.
Virtue Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does
not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance. The three greatest virtues are
first, humility, second, humility, and third, humility.
God In the Word of God exist the eternal truths, the species, the formal principles of things, which are
the models of created beings. In the intellectual light imparted to us by the Word of God we know both
the eternal truths and the ideas of real beings. God is the beginning and end of enerything.
St. Thomas Aquinas

VZ 2014 Sec 10 K Annual Reports Analysis Project
Verizon Communications, Inc.
2014 SEC 10 K Annual Reports Analysis Project
Executive Summary
The company I selected to research is Verizon Communications Inc., an American telecommunications
company. I chose Verizon because I am a current subscriber to all their major residential services from
phone to internet and FIOS. Verizon is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and
wireline communications services to consumer, business, government, and wholesale customers.
Verizon also provides converged communications, information and entertainment services over
America s most advanced fiber optic network, and delivers integrated business solutions to customers
in more than 150 countries. Verizon employs a diverse workforce of 178,300. They currently sit at
number 16 on the Fortune 500 list.
My objective in researching Verizon s financial statements was gaining a better understanding of the
company s short and long term goals. As I embarked on this journey, I reviewed the requirements,
after selecting Verizon, and subsequently realized that my choice was not a traditional manufacturing
entity; as such I focused my analysis on key types of financial ratios. My analysis will discuss Verizon
s performance as it relates to Asset Productivity, Financial Strength, and Profitability. Through my
research, paired with the course s content my initial impression of this project changed, as did my
appreciation for the role

George S T Shirts Case Analysis Essay
Case Background
George Lassiter makes t shirts for special events such as concerts. The upcoming concert presents
another opportunity for George to make and sell t shirts; however the question is how many t shirts to
produce. There are two fundamental case questions that must be answered:
1. What are the possible financial outcomes if Lassiter orders 5,000 T shirts? 7,500? 10,000?
As shown in the Exhibit, a rather simple but detailed decision tree has been made which represents the
various options for George. The financial outcomes for the three different amounts of t shirts that he
can provide are presented in tabular form, in the Appendix. Table 1 shows profit outcomes for
ordering 5000 shirts, Table 2 shows profit outcomes for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, there is no actual guarantee or scenario where George would earn exactly $26,574; it is simply
the weighted average of profits and their likelihoods, if he had to make this decision a large number of
times. Furthermore, the EMV for Order 10,000 shirts was $26,574; this was quite close to the EMV
for Order 7500 shirts , which was $24,181. Added to this, the payoffs for George from choosing the
different alternatives vary, and there are possibilities for George making a loss. EMV is not a very
accurate measure for George in this scenario and hence, a thorough risk analysis was conducted.
The risk analysis immediately eliminates the Order 15,000 shirts option (as did the EMV criteria)
because there is a 33% chance that George makes a loss with this option. This is a highly risky option,
with a high probability of loss, but at the same time, offers much higher payoffs. Due to George s
conservative nature in the past, we can safely say that he should not consider producing 15,000 t shirts
for the concert.
Having eliminated completely the option for producing 15,000 shirts, the analysis now focuses on the
remaining three options that were available to us at the beginning. With the option of producing
10,000 shirts, the probability of making at least a profit of $6791 is 6%. Similarly, there is also a 6%
probability of making a loss of $3458. On the other end of the spectrum, there is a

Planning The Annual Meeting With A Twist
Priyanka Golwala
10.07.2015
Problem 5 C: Planning the Annual Meeting with a Twist A publicly traded corporation is obligated
under Federal law to disclose any changes. Therefore, a merger with another corporation is a major
development that must be disclosed to everyone involved with the corporation based in California. In
order to make this merger a smooth transition, it is important to have the both corporations and their
executive teams meet to discuss the phases of the merger and how to divisively announce changes to
their stakeholders. After the board of directors pass the decision to merge with one another, both of the
involved corporations CEOs, public relations teams, human resources teams, and legal teams need to
meet and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The business media will have a lot of speculations and this can lead to questions and concerns from
both employees and shareholders. To manage the communication with stakeholder group individually,
it is necessary for the company to get ahead of the media s speculation and legal obligations for us to
disclose this development.
First, we will need to address employees through their direct supervisors. It will be most effective to
send an email on Monday to notify supervisors of a meeting that week, on Wednesday, which will be
done via teleconference. During this meeting, the VP of human resources, the PR team, as well as the
CEO will all be present to address concerns. The CEO will announce the merger that will take place,
and that this will allow the company to expand with its products and services. Unfortunately, this
merger requires the company to consolidate departments and change job descriptions for many
positions, which means many jobs will be eliminated from both companies. After her announcement,
the VP of HR will provide the resources available for all employees, which include: a 24 hour HR
hotline and a severance package for all employees who continue to work after this news.

  • 2. How Does Vonnegut Use Humor In Slaughterhouse Five Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five is a telling work of fiction that blends the author s experiences with the horror of war with a touch of science fiction and a healthy dose of humor. The novel guides us through the experiences of a man on a journey in both directions of time, through war, and the delusions brought on by the horrors therein. The pilgrimage Billy is on is broken up by milestones that read so it goes . The journey is a vessel for Vonnegut to show the reader how war can desensitize a man to death and cause him to recede into coping mechanisms, but that a man cannot be desensitized to suffering. The use of so it goes accompanies all mentions of a death in the book, between the death of his own father, soldiers he served with, and even eventual loss of the universe. It shows the variety of death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this sort of selectivity had been possible for Billy, he might have chosen as his happiest moment his sun drenched snooze in the back of the wagon (Vonnegut 141), this is the same wagon that is described as a green coffin . These two things coupled together show that Billy would be content in death. However, what makes this more interesting is the contrast with the moment when the pressures of all he has lived through become too great and causes his emotional dam to break. After being bombarded with death to the point of acceptance, the thing that finally causes Billy to break down is the suffering of an animal. The horses drawing his coffin on wheels along are near death with thirst and exhaustion. When it is pointed out to Billy, it is a breaking point after a backlog of an entire wars worth of horrors. Later on, as a middle aged Optometrist, he would weep quietly and privately sometimes (Vonnegut 197). The softness of the reaction speaks magnitudes about the depth of the emotional ... • 3. The Plight Of Low Income Individuals And Their Families Saul Alvarez English 101 The Plight of Low Income Individuals and Their Families According to the PRB article U.S. Low Income Working Families Increasing , 42.7% of people live below the poverty line, with 32.1% of them living 200% below the poverty line; this group is categorized as the low income group.(PRB) 59% of low income working families have one or more minority parents. Living in a low income community limits one s standard of living through academic gaps, the selection of food available, an ever present fear of victimization , and a lack of resources available to both children and adults. The differences in academic gaps between children and teenagers from low income neighborhoods and affluent neighborhoods present themselves in the schools the students attend. A study by the Department of Education showed that students in low income areas did not have access to the same rigorous courses, and when they did, the resources available to the low income students was lacking compared to the resources the students in high income neighborhoods had access to. In the low income areas black and Hispanic students were twice as likely to have teachers with less experience, with one or two years in the profession, compared to schools in affluent neighborhoods with well to do white students. Another thing increasing the academic gap is that only 22 percent of local districts reported offering pre kindergarten or other early learning programs for low income children. ... Essay On Gelato Gelato has an interesting history and originally dates back to frozen treats and desserts of Sicily in Italy, Egypt, and even ancient Rome; in which it was produced from the ice and snow of mountaintops before being brought down and preserved below ground level to keep it cold. Gelato soon became popular among a large portion of the population of Italian cities, one in particular was Florence. Nevertheless, its popularity only began to increase between the 1920s and 1930s before the first gelato cart was developed in the city of Varese. 1. However there has always been a minor amount of confusion as to where gelato first originated from and who really invented it. At soirées, he refused to perform if suddenly called upon to do so. Eventually, after many confrontations, the Archduke Rudolph decreed that the usual rules of court etiquette did not apply to Beethoven (wikipedia). Beethoven came into the attention Count Ferdinand Von Waldstein who became a lifelong friend and financial supporter. He also befriended Anton Reicha, a flautist and violinist of about his own age who was a nephew of the court orchestra s conductor, Josef Reicha. Perhaps Beethoven s most important aristocratic patron was Archduke Rudolph, the youngest son of Emperor Leopold II, who in 1803 or 1804 began to study piano and composition with Beethoven. This wave of immigrants was driven by the political events and wars going on in their home countries; many of these immigrants were refugees. In 1948 the creation of the State of Israel drastically increased the amount of Arab Muslim immigrants (Lipson Dubble, 2007). The third marked wave of Arab immigrants came from 1970 2000. • 13. Modern Landscape Design Is The Arrangement Of Environments... Modernism, in the context of landscape design, is a result of forms and functions that reflect the need for outdoor living spaces that enhance contemporary lifestyles. As Garrett Eckbo, one of the central figures in modern landscape architecture, said, landscape design is the arrangement of environments for people. Contemporary garden design tends to focus on scale as opposed to formal landscape designs that are based on axial relationships. It also foregoes the more classic landscape design forms and larger scale from Greek, Roman, and classical architecture traditions. This design motif became popular in the 1950 s baby boom, particularly in California where weather and lifestyle was very conducive to this innovative style. In modern landscape design, boundaries between areas of color, textures and shapes are undefined or conversely, sharply defined. Color and composition create the emotional response. Combining freshness and flair, these designs use dramatic geometric shapes to create a point of view that is fluid and natural. Water and light are often used, as in artfully lit outdoor water fountains, to enhance the sensual loveliness and liveliness. The designs are arresting, both close up and far away. Form and Function in Modern Landscape Design As the maxim says, form follows function. Modern landscape design is an aesthetic that shows only what is necessary while often leaving surfaces exposed. The simplicity of modern design reveals itself in that every form ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Inborn Names Of The Morongo Reservation Set at the extremity of the striking San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains, the Morongo Indian Reservation extends more than 35,000 acres and overlooks the desert vistas of the Banning Pass. Wild buckwheat, mesquite and chaparral still flourish here, and the ubiquitous breeze ensures that the air is always fresh and clear. One of the inborn names of the Morongo Reservation was Malki, and it was located in what was once called the Wanikik territory. In the mid 19th century, the Serrano people to the north began journeying to the Malki settlement. They brought with them the Morongo name derivative from the Serrano name for their people, Maringayam. Since the late 19th century, the Morongo Reservation has been tenanted by a mix of Cahuilla, Serrano, Luiseno and Cupeno people. Irrepressible and ingenious, the Morongo tribe has overcome many hardships. The Morongo Reservation was one of nine small reservations set aside by President Grant by Executive Order in 1865. The lands taken into trust by the federal government did not include land with access to surface water. Accordingly, tribal members had to travel miles each day just to acquire water and to forage for food. Through their industriousness and capability to survive in an unstable physical and political environment, the Morongo tribe began a small bingo venture in 1983. We did absolutely everything together; you very rarely spotted one of us without the other tagging along. Sadly, in March of 2014 my best friend was stolen from me. The thief s name was Jordan. He practically swept her off her feet and took off running with her. When you were around them you couple almost feel the love in the room, and when they looked at each other you could see the sparkle in their eyes. On September 7th, 2015 they were on a trip to Fort Lee Virginia. They were out eating dinner and when dessert came out it was a slice of cake and a plate with the words Will You Marry Me? . Of course she said yes, but that was the day I realized I was going to have to give my best friend away to her better half. I could not believe we were planning a wedding; I could have sworn we were just two little blonde headed goofballs that swore that boys had cooties. It started to sink in the day she picked out her wedding dress. I was unable to go with her when she picked it out, but when I received a picture of her in the dress I cried like a baby. The dress was an off white, floor length lace gown that fit her like a glove. Not only did I cry because she looked beautiful, but because it was one step closer to the big day. • 17. Relativity Of Truth In Life Of Pi Life of Pi: The Relativity of Truth The relativity of truth refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths. The truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference. An example of truth relativism is the The Dress trend which went viral because viewers disagreed over whether the colors of the dress were black and blue or gold and white. Because of how a human perceives the color, it could be either of these colors based on how a person sees it. The relativity of truth in the Life of Pi includes and refers to the Blind Frenchman , the algae island, and which story Pi told the interviewers was true. To begin, when Pi went blind in chapter 90 and practically gave up on surviving, he heard a voice. It s astonishing what you hear when you re alone in the blackness of your dying mind. (Martel, Pg 242). To people, this could refer to Pi hearing an actual person or it could just be a figment of his imagination. Misery loves company, and madness calls it forth. (Martel, Pg 242). This adds to the theory that the voice Pi heard was just a figment of his imagination. Further on in the novel, Pi meets and speaks to the Blind Frenchman after figuring out that it wasn t Richard Parker he was talking to. Later on, Richard Parker killed the Frenchman and Pi explored his boat, finding out that the Frenchman had lied to him about having food. What doesn t add up is that Pi regained his eyesight two days after the Frenchman s murder and when he went to check out the dead man s boat, he was still blind. This could mean that Pi didn t actually go on the Frenchman s boat but was actually exploring his boat and that the man was a figment of his imagination to suppress the loneliness Pi was feeling. Furthermore, in chapter 92, Pi discovers an algae island with food to eat and land to settle on. Pi stated ...that the island was not an island in the conventional sense of the term that is, a small landmass rooted to the floor of the ocean but was rather a free floating organism... • 19. Critique Of Characters In Cobalt Blue By Sachin Kundalkar I put down Sachin Kundalkar s Cobalt Blue a couple of days ago and the characters continue to haunt me. Kundalkar has so vividly painted them into my mind that they seem to have made a home for themselves in there. Over the next couple of days, I have found myself reaching out for the book, re reading paragraphs at random and with every read I feel like I have opened a whole new world. I have been musing at the simplicity and the beauty of the story, and I have concluded that no review could ever do justice to the gem that is this work. Cobalt Blue was originally written and published in Marathi by Sachin Kundalkar when he was only 22 years old (his age is of no importance, until you put down the book and realise that someone wrote a book so profound and meaningful when he was at the same age as you). For almost ten years the book remained a treasure to only those who spoke Marathi, till Jerry Pinto, at Shanta Gokhale s request translated it into English. A lot is lost in translation, a fact that is acknowledged by Pinto in his afterword. However, Pinto took extra care to retain the essence of the novel, which is something that those who are not fluent in Marathi would appreciate. Teresa Lavender Fagan, translator, says, A translator must absorb the essence of a work, feel the author s soul and do what she can to minimize what must necessarily be lost. • 20. Hell In The Gospel Of John, And St. Thomas Aquinas Hell is recognized as an extremely difficult doctrine for many to accept, due to its nature of opposing the very notion of a benevolent God. Although God grants the gift of mercy and infinite love to all, a soul can be damned to Hell due to the gift of free will and the rejection of God s love. In the teachings and works of the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and St. Thomas Aquinas, the interpretation of Heaven and its counterpart Hell are found in their attempt to explain the contradictory essence of God s altruistic love and the potential of eternal punishment. It has been clearly denoted that the Gift of God s free will is the primary reason for one condemning themselves to Hell or entering the Kingdom of God in Heaven. God s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In chapters five and seven of the Book of Matthew, it reveals that some may not be granted entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven after facing judgment. An analogy is made that the good tree of heaven cannot possibly bear bad fruit just like a bad tree cannot bear that of good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them (Matthew 7: 19 20) indicating the tradition view of Hell being a dark, fiery, pit of depraved spirits. In the Gospel of Mark, Hell is referred to as Gehenna which is a term associated in Hebrew scripture that dictates it a place of the wicked. Hell is a place where God s judgment has inscribed the sin filled life upon one s spirit. In the Gospel of Luke, Hell is referred to as a place where sinners are perished . In the parable of the rich man and lazarus, the rich man whom deemed to hell requests to warn his brothers of the afterlife, Then Abraham said, If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead (Luke 16: 31). Discounted Cash Flow discounted cash flow (DCF In finance, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is a method of valuing a project, company, or asset using the concepts of the time value of money. All future cash flows are estimated and discounted to give their present values (PVs) the sum of all future cash flows, both incoming and outgoing, is the net present value (NPV), which is taken as the value or price of the cash flows in question. Using DCF analysis to compute the NPV takes as input cash flows and a discount rate and gives as output a price; the opposite process taking cash flows and a price and inferring a discount rate, is called the yield. Discounted cash flow analysis is widely used in investment finance, real estate development, and corporate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using the DPV formula above (FV=$150,000, i=0.05, n=3), that means that the value of $150,000 received in three years actually has a present value of $129,576 (rounded off). In other words we would need to invest $129,576 in a T Bond now to get $150,000 in 3 years almost risk free. This is a quantitative way of showing that money in the future is not as valuable as money in the present ($150,000 in 3 years isn t worth the same as $150,000 now; it is worth $129,576 now). Subtracting the purchase price of the house ($100,000) from the present value results in the net present value of the whole transaction, which would be $29,576 or a little more than 29% of the purchase price. Another way of looking at the deal as the excess return achieved (over the risk free rate) is (14.5% 5.0%)/(100%+5%) or approximately 9.0% (still very respectable). But what about risk? We assume that the $150,000 is John s best estimate of the sale price that he will be able to achieve in 3 years time (after deducting all expenses, of course). There is of course a lot of uncertainty about house prices, and the outcome may end up higher or lower than this estimate. (The house John is buying is in a good neighborhood, but market values have been rising quite a lot lately and the real estate market analysts in the media are talking about a slow down and higher interest rates. It seems as if he wanted to take the evidence he acquired and create a story that would capture readers attention by the emotional connection with the characters and provide them with a map, letters, and other documents. He also seemed to want to educate his readers not only on the sinking of the ship, but all of the events that happened on the days it were at sail. Clarence Darrow i Most often critically interpreted as a search for Divine justice, Kafka s The Trial, a fragmented and unfinished novel, appears to leave us with the same impression as the words above of Clarence Darrow. In other words, there is no justice. This assessment of Divine justice by Kafka works on two levels. On one level, he is illustrating the helpless nature of the individual when in conflict against an established bureaucracy. On another level, he is illustrating the existential dilemma of man in the face of a godless, indifferent, and often hostile universe. A search for justice by Josef K. finds no justice in ... In vain, much as many people try to find meaning and justice out of court, Josef K. s efforts to discover why he is accused and must suffer are in vain. Yet, his character and his sins are conventional, and he has no bold or threatening ambitions. All he can do is ask questions, but he receives no answers that would clarify the bureaucratic system into which he has been thrust. Just like existential awareness undermines the entire rational structure of Divine justice, so, too, the alternative hypotheses, the multiple explanations, the different interpretations, and the uncertainty Josef K. experiences, serve to undermine the whole rational structure of the justice system. Josef K. comes to understand the socially constructed, arbitrary, and absurd nature of the justice system, and, justice itself The truth allegedly resides above the realms of justice and injustice. iii This literary analysis will focus on how Josef K. s experiences in The Trial demonstrate not only the corrupt justice system of the era but also the absurd and futile attempt to seek an arbitrary concept like justice in an existential realm. Many of Shakespeare s plays have been performed since his death 400 years ago. And with time comes advances, as many of Shakespeare s play have been adapted from text to film. Some films take Shakespeare s original plot and twist it to be more modern, while others stick with the classic. In Franco Zeffirelli s 1968 film version of The Taming of the Shrew, he recreates Shakespeare s loved play. Although Zeffirelli stays close to Shakespeare s original text, he does omit and add lines and scenes that weren t originally in the play. Zeffirelli also adds body language and stage directions where they aren t in the play. These directorial decisions change the way the romance looks between Katherina and Petruccio in the text. The relationship between the two characters in Zeffirelli s film is attempted to be seen as more consensual than in the text. Peter Schraeder put it best in his essay, Political and Economic Impacts of Colonialism, when he said, Britain s portrayal of its efforts as the whites man s burden and France s pronouncement of its mission civilisatrice , were offered to justify European domination over peoples deemed backward, ignorant, uncivilized, barbaric, savage, and godless heathen. It certainly makes one wonder why a nation would take the role of a protectorate if it viewed the people they were trying to protect in that light. This may also explain the why Britain established the institutions and practices they did during colonial rule. One of the most significant institutions introduced by the colonial powers as a method to civilize the Africans was the implementation of the nation state system. Pre colonial African was full of nations and kingdoms, which varied in respect to their polities and general structure. There are two ideologies that the human race has adopted into giving reason for our existence as well as our evolution; this being, religion, and science. Science and religion have been in a conflicting battle against each other in discovering truth about the universe and their main ideas disregard the other making them ultimately incompatible. Throughout history this conflict has been proven through, Galileo s sentence of house arrest in 1632 over his claim of a sun centered solar system, to the more recent Scopes Monkey Trial, in 1925; that lead to the great debate between Darrow and Jennings Bryan over the teaching of evolution in schools, (Coyne beginning). At the age of 19, he graduated with his Master of Arts degree. And at the age of 22, he mastered a classical literature and published his first literary commentary. It was no brainer that classical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is very obvious when you read through his expositional commentaries on the Bible. However, for many centuries prior to the Reformation, the typical hermeneutical methods were allegorizing and spiritualizing the text. Having such methods, the church can say about anything she wants to believe what the Bible says and means. Such hermeneutical gymnastics was a license for much of ecclesiastical abuses. But for Calvin, the meaning of the text was the meaning of the text. What drove him to handle the Word with such precision was due to his commitment to biblical exegesis. In fact, he is considered the father of the modern day grammatico historical method of hermeneutics. To answer what grammatical historical hermeneutics is, it is simply an interpreting rule in which the interpreter considers the historical context and grammatical structure for the specific text that he wishes to understand the way that the biblical author originally intended to convey. Calvin understood that without the proper exegesis of Scripture, there is no expositional preaching. In other words, biblical exegesis is the foundational work for proper expository ... • 39. Diffusion And Osmosis Paper Particles are moving atoms; thus they have a habit of moving from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. This principle is divided into two classifications: diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion is the movement of substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration and they become evenly distributed throughout both regions (Biology Department, 2015).Furthermore Osmosis is the movement of free water from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration across a semi permeable membrane (Biology Department, 2015).Diffusion and osmosis regulate the quantity of solutes that are in the solvent from moving in and out of the cell in aqueous solutions. Solvents are the disperse agents while solutes are the disperse substances; these substances are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tonicity is the capacity of a nearby solution that causes a cell to gain or lose water; it relies on the concentration of the solute that cannot pass through the membrane (Reece et al., 2014).A hypertonic solution is when the solution has a higher concentration then the solute which causes the water to move away from the cell which results in a shriveled cell. A hypotonic solution is when the solute has a higher concentration than the solution which causes the cell to expand and swell (Mao, 2008). Nevertheless an isotonic solution is when the concentration of the solute and solution are equal. The category of the cell relies on the effect of osmosis on the cell. The hypotonic solution will take up water if an animal cell is placed in the solution, which will cause it to swell, gets larger and eventually lyse. For the Animal cells, leaning to die proceeded by failing in keeping water and shrinking are the findings in the process of a hypertonic solution. Nonetheless, when a plant cell is placed in ... • 40. The Importance Of The Tower Of Babel The most segregated place is Sunday service, what does that say about the God you worship? Lecrae; Dirty Water Too many one might think that the Tower of Babel is about God punishing people, and in a way it was. The confusion that God placed on the people was something made to humble the people trying to be at the same height of God. But the realities are that we have made strides in the list of human achievements that have surpassed the height of the tower of Babel, and through that singular event, culture had erupted onto the earth. The shift of being like God has changed from a physical one to a psychological one. Our idea of our ability to be god like has inflated people in our lives. From the people, we expect evil from like Hitler and Stalin, and from people who might not be as obvious as religious leaders and people in mentoring positions in our lives. We don t worship for God, but for ourselves was a quote from Joel Osteen s Wife, her message is a simple one worship God for the feelings that derive from it, not to elicit humbling praise for the grace that God has hand delivered us. The dislocation in the church has been something of an issue since the beginning of the church in Acts. Steven was killed giving a list of issues that he found in the church (Acts 7), and Martin Luther, and many other have died at the hands of the church. Yet, my statement remains; Our battle has changed from a physical one to a psychological one. The point of the tower of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Asians And Asian American Culture This class helped me realize how ignorant I really was about the Asian American culture as well as the Native American culture. I generally believed that I was more culturally sound than I actually am. I believed that I knew more about these cultures than I really did and was shocked to realize that I fed into some of the stereotypes. I knew that Asian Americans did well academically because their parents valued education and had them study more than their peers, however I did not realize that culturally boys were expected to succeed more academically than girls were. I believed that girls were equally held up to a standard as boys were. Watching the film clips related to Asians and Asian Americans was an eye opening experience. Just as African Americans are told that their natural hair is not good enough and it is internalized, it appears it is the same for many Asian Americans in relation to their eyes. The film clip about the young girl being taken to have plastic surgery on her eyes at the age of 12 because she felt that she would be more beautiful was a heart breaking scene to watch. It never occurred to me that a feature that is specific to that particular group would become something that has almost become shameful to a lot of people. To have an eye surgery is a serious decision one has to make and for that little girl to be so sure that she wants her eyes operated on at 12 years old was something that I could relate to, but not understand. I also did not realize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Conflict And Conflict Management Strategies Robbins and Judge define conflict as a process that begins when one party perceives another party has or is about to negatively affect something that is cared about. There is a variety of conflicts that individuals will encounter within their lives. Knowing and understating the conflict cycle and understanding conflict management strategies will help individuals solve conflict in a reasonable manner (Robbins Judge, 2014). Discussing Contentious Issues/ Bringing Conflict into the Open When managers are faced with discussing contentious issues or having to bring up conflict within their organizations, there are several steps that they can take to ensure that all goes smoothly. A process should be put in place that ensures that all individuals feel safe when bringing up ideas and thoughts. Managers must prepare and plan for what might come their way. Goals and objectives of the discussion must be clear to all involved. Goals should be put in writing and a range of potential outcomes should be shared (Robbins Judge, 2014, p. 315 316). Next ground rules should be established. Grounds rules are a list of expected behaviors that individuals must portray during a discussion/meeting. The following are a list of ground rules that could be helpful when discussing contentious issues. Don t interrupt Give everyone equal time to speak No outside interruptions (cell phones, etc.) Be respectful of other people s opinions Address the issue, don t attack the ... VZ 2014 Sec 10 K Annual Reports Analysis Project Verizon Communications, Inc. 2014 SEC 10 K Annual Reports Analysis Project Executive Summary The company I selected to research is Verizon Communications Inc., an American telecommunications company. • 45. George S T Shirts Case Analysis Essay Case Background George Lassiter makes t shirts for special events such as concerts. The upcoming concert presents another opportunity for George to make and sell t shirts; however the question is how many t shirts to produce. There are two fundamental case questions that must be answered: 1. What are the possible financial outcomes if Lassiter orders 5,000 T shirts? 7,500? 10,000? As shown in the Exhibit, a rather simple but detailed decision tree has been made which represents the various options for George. The financial outcomes for the three different amounts of t shirts that he can provide are presented in tabular form, in the Appendix. Table 1 shows profit outcomes for ordering 5000 shirts, Table 2 shows profit outcomes for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, there is no actual guarantee or scenario where George would earn exactly $26,574; it is simply the weighted average of profits and their likelihoods, if he had to make this decision a large number of times. Furthermore, the EMV for Order 10,000 shirts was $26,574; this was quite close to the EMV for Order 7500 shirts , which was $24,181. Added to this, the payoffs for George from choosing the different alternatives vary, and there are possibilities for George making a loss. EMV is not a very accurate measure for George in this scenario and hence, a thorough risk analysis was conducted. The risk analysis immediately eliminates the Order 15,000 shirts option (as did the EMV criteria) because there is a 33% chance that George makes a loss with this option. This is a highly risky option, with a high probability of loss, but at the same time, offers much higher payoffs. Due to George s conservative nature in the past, we can safely say that he should not consider producing 15,000 t shirts for the concert. Having eliminated completely the option for producing 15,000 shirts, the analysis now focuses on the remaining three options that were available to us at the beginning. With the option of producing 10,000 shirts, the probability of making at least a profit of $6791 is 6%. Similarly, there is also a 6% probability of making a loss of $3458. To manage the communication with stakeholder group individually, it is necessary for the company to get ahead of the media s speculation and legal obligations for us to disclose this development. First, we will need to address employees through their direct supervisors. It will be most effective to send an email on Monday to notify supervisors of a meeting that week, on Wednesday, which will be done via teleconference. During this meeting, the VP of human resources, the PR team, as well as the CEO will all be present to address concerns. The CEO will announce the merger that will take place, and that this will allow the company to expand with its products and services. Unfortunately, this merger requires the company to consolidate departments and change job descriptions for many positions, which means many jobs will be eliminated from both companies.
