Chapter 3 Nice To Eat You: Acts of Vampires Chapter Summary: Ghosts and vampires are never
only about ghosts and vampires. There s a thin line between the ordinary and the monstrous. Sex:
Evil, lust, seduction, temptation, danger. Evil has been related to sex ever since the serpent
tempted Eve. Exploitation: using other people to get what we want, placing our desires above
others. Vampires and other figures are used where someone grows by weakening someone else.
Connections: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne: Hester wearing the scarlet letter A is a
perfect example of exploitation. By making her weaker, idealistic society grows stronger. A major
theme is sin, relating easily to the evilness of sex in a puritan... Show more content on

Chapter 15 Flights of Fancy Chapter Summary: Human beings can t fly, so if something can fly,
it s not human. Flight is freedom. When a character has the ability to fly they are free from the
burdens of everyday life. Connections: The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus: By giving Icarus
the ability to fly, he has a freedom unfathomed by most. This freedom is too much for someone
to handle and he does even what he is told not to, by flying close to the sun. Sophie s World by
Jostein Gaarder: In one of Alberto s letters to Sophie he talked about flying. A small experiment
shows Sophie the difference between the ideas of a child and a grown adult, and how something
like flying can get such a different reaction from the two. One morning, Mom, Dad and little
Thomas, aged two or three, are having breakfast in the kitchen. After a while Mom gets up and
goes over to the kitchen sink, and Dad yes, Dad flies up and floats around under the ceiling while
Thomas sits watching. What do you think? Thomas says. Perhaps he points up at his father and
says: Daddy s flying! Thomas will certainly be astonished, but then he very often is. Dad does so
many strange things that this business of a little flight over the breakfast table makes no difference
to him. Now it s Mom s turn. She hears what Thomas says and turns around abruptly. How do you
think she reacts to the sight of Dad floating nonchalantly over the kitchen

The Risks Caused By Foreign Currency Derivatives On The...
NestlГ© S.A. is a Swiss company and owns a prestigious position being the world s leading
nutrition, health and wellness group (NestlГ©, 2016). According to its annual report (2015), this
company is exposed to many risks caused by movements in foreign currency exchange rates,
interest rate and market prices. The foreign exchange risk comes from transactions and
translations of foreign operations in Swiss Francs (CHF). The interest rate risk faces the
borrowings at fixed and variable rates. The market price risk comes from commodity price and
equity price. The former risk arises from world commodity market for the supplies of coffee, cocoa
beans, sugar and others. The later risk arises from the fluctuations of the prices of investments held.
(Nestle annual reports, 2015). Thus, financial derivatives instruments are used by this multinational
corporation in order to hedge these risks.
Moreover, because of the huge worldwide extension of the corporation, which operates in 194
countries, the use of foreign currency derivatives to minimize the earnings volatility would be the
subject of later analysis. The report will focus on how NestlГ© uses futures and option contracts to
hedge its exposure to currency risk, centering our attention in NestlГ© Home Currency, the Swiss
Franc in relation to the US Dollar (USD/CHF). It will be examined an example of its hedging
strategy and the information provided by a contact in the firm.

King Of Bohemia Analysis
Charges against the King of Bohemia and Sherlock Holmes
In A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle, social classes took a big influence on who
avoided punishments. Irene Adler, a strong and intelligent women accused Sherlock Holmes and
the King of Bohemia with serious charges. Sherlock Holmes is a man who loathes being apart of
society and keeps to himself. He is a detective well known with intelligent skills. The King of
Bohemia is Holmes client, and former lover of Irene Adler. In attempt to recover a photograph that
is crucial to the king of bohemias reputation, Sherlock Holmes as well as the King of bohemia are
both charged with stalking and attempted robbery. In addition to this, further investigations take
action and deduce charges of possession and the use of drugs against Sherlock Holmes, as well as
plotting to throw a smoke bomb through Irene Adler s window. As for the King of Bohemia, he is
also charged with treason.
The King of Bohemia a rich a well reputed man, he finds himself with charges, such as stalking,

That s how my daddy raised me. (Fiasco). Lupe Fiasco was a kid growing up in gang affiliated
areas of South Side Chicago and was one of the few that made it out with no harm. Lupe now
preaches for change of gangviolence going on in his home. Lupe Fiasco grew up in poverty within
the Chicagoarea and advocates for change in his lyrics. Fiasco advocates that there must be
change in the gang areas for that the kids of today s society do not fall into the trap of gang
violence. Gang violence in Chicago is caused by poverty in inner cities, climate change, and how
gang members do not respect authorities. This problem can be fixed by investing more money into
these urban areas, focusing in cities during warm months, and by government building positive
relationships with the citizens.

The main source of income for gangs is drug trafficking in urban areas. ( Gang Violence ). This
shows the way that gangs get money and it can show that some gang violence takes place
because of the drug game. It is broadly assumed that gang related homicides are directly linked
to drug trafficking activities. ( Gang Violence ). The quote here shows the correlation of drug
trafficking and gang violence. Drug trafficking leads to gang violence for a number of different
reasons. In a news article, it stated that there was a massive drug bust containing over 10,000
dollars worth of drugs and guns (Davey). This explains because it is a prime example of how
violence rises with drug trafficking. When cities do not invest, it will lead to a lot of gang activity.
With gang activity comes the drug game and drugs cause a lot of violence such as shootings and

Being John Malkovich
The movie Being John Malkovich, revolves around the dysfunctional life of an unhappy married
couple and the absurd changes that take place in their lives, upon the discovery of a portal
leading into John Malkovich s subconscious mind. It follows an unemployed puppeteer, Craig
Schwartz, on his quest to gain the recognition he desires. Craig Schwartz acquires a job as a file
clerk for Lester Corp, located on the 7 1/2th floor. It is there that he discovers a secret door with a
portal behind a filing cabinet. This portal transports whoever enters it into John Malkovichs head,
enabling one to experience Malkovich s life through his eyes, or as Schwartz likes to put it, in his

This greed and infatuation with wanting more, contradicts the concept of empathy that we as
humans share for one another. Schwartz who had once seemed envious of the chimpanzee s lack
of empathy, had become apathetic himself. A flashback showing the chimpanzee as a baby being
taken away from its captured parents, explains why it had been diagnosed with post traumatic
stress earlier. This is an underlying point in the movie, as it humanizes the primate and animalizes
the humans. Craig was prepared to change his life and consequently change John Malkovich s life,
in order to secure Maxine s affection. Even if that sacrifice meant that he not only had to leave his
wife, but also his own physical body.
Being inside did something to me, I knew who I was .
Lotte Schwartz describes her vivid experience in Malkovich s subconscious as feeling right ,
stating that she had never felt that way before. A woman feeling right as a man is taboo and an
extremely controversial topic, especially when we consider the fact that she s a married woman.
Yet Lotte expresses this with full certainty when she comes to the conclusion that she s a
transsexual. We begin to see her in a different light, one opposite to how she was initially
introduced. She becomes more assertive and confident, unlike the caring and timid wife she was.
By screaming out in Malkovich s sub conscious, she was able to convince him to meet with Maxine

Ballet Research Paper
What would the world do without dancing? Many styles of this art form are spread from different
cultures around the world, and are performed all over. Cha Cha, samba, ballroom, swing, disco,
and break dance are all unique forms of dance that are performed, but the one with the most class
and rich history is ballet. The elements the combine to form a danceculture include the origin, the
music involved, and the classes of dancers. These dance styles contain different components, but
ballet is an older, more moving, art form that contains graceful dances set to classical music versus
break dancing, which is more modern with sharp movements set to hip hop. Ballet has many

Breakdancing is a much newer style that has been around for less than a century. It originated in
the 1970s in the Bronx, New York with the streets as a stage. Afrika Bambaataa was credited for
forming one of the earliest dance crews entitles the Zulu Kings (From Street to Dance). They
earned a reputation with their breakdancing circles, and then more people joined in, and from
there, the style started to evolve. More well known groups such as the Rock Steady Crew of
New York City helped in surging the popularity of breakdancing in low income communities and
urban areas. In pop culture, many interpretations such as youth alternative and violent gangs
have evolved to merge into a R B funk classification. It is less planned out, and more improvised
based on the rhythm to where there is a named style entitled freestyle (Art of Funk). Short, sharp
motions make up the majority of the terms derived from slang. Hip hop music is used, and unlike
classical, it has lyrics that can be used to convey a message. Living below the poverty line used to
the main theme, but as it evolved, dances became more about drugs, partying, how amazing the
artist is. The original meaning was driven out by pop culture and the desire for validation. Starting
from the streets of the Bronx, breakdancing has evolved to a less meaningful art form that has

Examples Of Inequality In To Kill A Mockingbird
The world is a mosaic of all different cultures and colors, and either these differences can clash,
causing a problem, or combine to make something uniquely beautiful. When people clash, it
creates war and destruction, leaving people distraught, but when these very same people choose
to combine what they know and believe in it can bring wonderful things into the world like
celebrations and children. The cultures and societies that these people believe in have their own
way of living and different rules. Some cultures may not support the combination of white and
black while others would kill to see it. These societies all over the world deem certain practices
and people to be acceptable, whether it is an established caste system or a simple friend group in
high school. But within these structures come irregularities and outcasts. As seen in Harper Lee s

anomalies. While Lee portrays this treatment of individuals unfairly in a literary work, it... Show

Restorative Justice Case Study
Introduction
Over the course of both my undergraduate and master s programs in Negotiation, Conflict
Resolution, and Peacebuilding (NCRP), I have wanted to further study the concept of Restorative
Justice. Though it has surfaced several times throughout my NCRP coursework, it has mostly been
in the context of international conflict. Thus, I have often wondered how Restorative Justice might
work in a more local context. That local context revealed itself in my current role as one of two
fathers of a first grader in a school in Long Beach. Helena, our six year old daughter, attends a
small private school with 160 students in grades K 8. The school community regards itself as
being a large, caring, tight knit extended family, while the administration has been explicit in
stating that the incidence of bullying on the campus is little to none. Our experience as a family in
the nearly two years that we have been part of the community has been otherwise. Here are three
bullying scenarios that we ve experienced or heard of occurring in our school community:

class for having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

By using repeating symbolic imagery, OK Computer shows that ruling power structures, like
religion and corporations, center around vulnerability in how they gain influence and in how
they are motivated. Additionally, in order to maintain their influence, these powers have to put
up a front of indestructibility while also managing internal struggles. Planes crashes are depicted
throughout the album s artwork, a symbol of innovation and monetary means that has failed and
brought people down with it. Planes, much like corporations, are supposed to have very few
chinks in their armor, but both can go down; both are vulnerable under their guise of perfection.
There is also the case of religion, where a statue of Jesus is seen being worshipped by a
considerably smaller family. Religion is a form of protection, both for the herd immunity and for
the surety of an afterlife, and the family is beneath, quite vulnerable. However, the statue is white,
like the scribbles surrounding it, while the family is not and would take more work to scribble

modern life than in previous centuries. When the statue appears again, it is a hand behind a

Laboratory Techniques Used For Forensic Anthropology
Laboratory techniques used in forensic anthropology to identify questionable remains as bone
include histology, protein analysis, and DNA analysis. The problem with these techniques is that
they can be destructive, lengthy, and expensive. Additionally, these methods may not be able to
identify bone when it is highly fragmented or altered. Therefore, chemical analysis techniques such
as HHXRF, XRF, SEM/EDS, PIXE, and Raman Spectroscopyhave been proposed for differentiating
bone and teeth from non skeletal material and human from nonhuman skeletal material. Although
their use is sporadic and dependent on instrument availability, these chemical techniques have
proven valuable to the field of forensic anthropology and to the task of identifying human remains.
Depending on the bone or location on the bone, there will be a difference in trace elements
present. Zn, V, Ni, Cr, Pb, Mn, Co, and Sn are found in higher concentrations in bone epiphyses
while Ca, Sr, Na, and K are found more often in the central portion of the diaphysis. This could
potentially tell what bone the anthropologist has obtained if it is a fragmented piece. Diet and
growth environment also have an impact on the distribution of trace elements within bone. While
this is useful in identification, research is also being conducted to establish past dietary habits by
using isotope analysis to detect specific trace element ratios associated with dietary patterns to gain
a better understanding of the past. There are

brutally by her mistress because she just had a rest while the baby whom she took care of was
crying. Behind this, she was actually kept working every night and rarely had a nap. A trivial
mistake shockingly cost her life to pay for the baby s cry. According to many more details by
Douglass, those slaves lived in a life in which they not only needed to keep worrying about what
to eat and when to take a break, but also needed to never stop thinking about how they should
behave like an infallible machine in order to escape from their masters s bloody cowskins. In a
word, slaves were deprived of the right to work hard to earn a living, and became the livestocks
which were forced by human to do whatever they needed them to do, which also meant they could
be tortured or killed just for the same reason why an animal could be killed.
Second, under the system of slavery, African Americans were kept getting hurt mentally because

The Importance Of The Dreyfus Affair
Throughout history, journalism has impacted in both the history and the politics of a country. In
1894, a man named Alfred Dreyfus, who was a Jewish military officer in the French army, was
used as a scapegoat by being wrongfully accused of sharing French military defense secrets to
Germany. Alfred Dreyfus is importance lies in the strong antisemitismmovement in France that
erupted after (Fischel 119). The Affair began in September 1894 when The French Army
Intelligence Bureau intercepted a letter supposedly written by Alfred Dreyfus. Alfred Dreyfus was
court martialed for treason and revealing military secrets to the Germans in his letter. This false
accusation was easily accomplished given the antisemitism of the time, combined with the... Show

Like many innocent people, the letters from Alfred are filled with the questions on the verdict and
claims of innocence. He used these questions once sentenced to restore his honor by acquittal.
These positive thoughts of acquittal prevented his suicide on Devil s Island (Dreyfus 138).
Although Alfred Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or
military change, his attempts to advocate for his innocence led to a political and cultural divide in
France. The Dreyfus Affairwas a main cause of the tremendous unrest in France. It unleased a
strong anti Semitism movement in France because of a perceived failure of the justice system
(Fischel 119). It deeply divided France in politics, religion, and national identity. The acquittal of
Alfred Dreyfus gave justice to him and marked a turning point in history, in which it was a
magnificent step forward in an era of progress for ideas of liberty, of justice, and of social solidarity
(Dreyfus 241).
Although Alfred Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or
military change, the primary source, an open letter by Emile Zola J accuse advocated for these
things. J accuse was published in defense of Alfred Dreyfus in L Aurore, a popular French
newspaper. The French press both helped to convict and acquit Alfred Dreyfus to Devil s Island;

How Has Basketball Changed Over The Years
Basketball has been played all around the world and there are many different rules and
regulations when playing this sport. Basketball has many different levels of experience. There is a
level at the fifth and sixth grade level, the seventh and eighth grade level, the junior varsity level,
the varsity level in high school, the college level, and the professional level or National Basketball
Association (NBA). Basketball was invented in 1892 by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith.
He started with having simple rules so all the players were able to get used to playing the sport
very easily. Basketball has changed over the years and it will continue to change in the future.
For all the different levels of basketball, there are different rules and judgments on how the game
should be played. Basketball has many different ways to play effectively. It is a very competitive
sport and as a player it is his/her job to figure out which is the best way to beat the opponent on

The game was not very new and the people were very unsure about how to go about playing.
They say that it looked as if the players were just running around more than trying to play the
actual sport (Basketball in America). The early Olmec people were actually the first people to
start playing the game of basketball and this took place in Mexico. They started playing this
sport as far back as five hundred years ago. Basketball was played differently around the world.
When they first started playing basketball, nobody was for sure about how to go about the rules
and how to play it so they just had many different techniques and their own rules on how they were
about going about playing it (Basketball in

What s Definition Of Intelligence And Tell Me What...
1.Please parse Wechsler s definition of intelligence and tell me what exactly did Wechsler mean?
2.How did he come to understand intelligence as he did? Intelligence is the aggregate or global
capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his
environment (Wechsler, 1939 p. 3). Wechsler explains that it is global because it characterizes the
individual s behavior as a whole, it is aggregate because it is composed of elements or abilities
which are qualitatively differentiable. Wechsler further explains that intelligence is not just a sum
of these abilities. Intelligent behavior is a result of the interaction of these abilities. Intelligent
behavior can be determined by other factors than intellectual abilities, such as drive and incentive.
An excess of any given ability may add relatively little to the effectiveness of a behavior as a whole.
Wechsler differentiates between intelligence and intellectual abilities. Although intelligence is no
mere sum of intellectual abilities, the only way we can evaluate it quantitatively is by the
measurement of the various aspects of these abilities .(Wechsler, Wechsler conceptualization of
intelligence had been influenced by Spearman who pioneered the concept of g as global
intelligence. Although Spearman was reluctant to call g global intelligence, Wechsler pointed out
that g does equal intelligence because it measured intellectual tasks exclusively. Spearman s g
factor was the

Theories of Management
Theories gave organizations a framework for knowledge and a guide to achieving their goals. The
Industrial Revolution prompted the need for better supervision of workers to boost productivity
within the automobile, steel, and coal industries. It is because of this need that the various theories
of managementbegan to take shape. The classical management theory, which came about during the
Industrial Revolution, focused on the single best way to perform and manage tasks. This enabled
factories to operate year round and mass production of goods. But as the revolution went on, the
factories divided into separate schools of thought regarding management yet still considered it to be
a part of classical. The emphasis on manufacturing and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
robberies, burglaries, and car thefts. It is from that information that supervisors can determine
the areas that require more police presence. Most law enforcement agencies are made up of
subsystems that allow the agency to function. These subsystems, such as the Detective Bureau,
Administrative Bureau, Service Bureau, and Uniform Patrol Bureau all operate together as a
whole which is what the systems school approach to management is based on. The managers of
each of the bureaus are aware of the others function and communicate often. This is important so
that the plans of one bureau do not negatively affect those of another. When an agency joins
forces, so to speak, with an outside agency it s known as synergy. It increases the effectiveness
of the cooperation. The systems approach tells managers to keep employees focused on the
objective so that overall goals can be met. The contingency school theory is when those in
management use approaches or take actions depending on that particular situation. This theory
supports suing all or parts of past theories to solve a problem. Law enforcement utilizes this
approach on a daily basis. Officers respond to calls for service in which they are expected to
rectify. They use their years of experience and training along with past incidents of similarity and
decide on what actions are necessary to take. The contingency school is based on

Migrant Workers In Canada
For over 50 years, farmers in Ontario and other provinces in Canada have met their seasonal
labour needs through the use of the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (CSAWP)
by hiring temporary workers from Mexico and other locations in the Caribbean. This program
allows entry of low to middle skilled farm workers for a provisional time of up to eight months of
the year into Canada each year. With current studies showing more than 1,600 migrant workers are

Gilgamesh Analysis
Gilgamesh One of the earliest surviving works of literature is The Epic of Gilgamesh. It is a
source into understanding the Sumerians and what they believe. The Epic of Gilgamesh takes
place in an ancient Sumerian city of Uruk, which is modern day Iraq. We can take a few things
away from this poem about the Sumerians. For one, they have strong beliefs in gods and
goddesses and they have a self consciousness of their cultivation with the natural world. The main
character of this poem is Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk. Gilgamesh is 1/3rd human and 2/3rds god,
incredibly handsome, and is one of the strongest humans. Ultimately Gilgamesh is the most
powerful man of his time, which allows him to exploit women and wear out the city. Gilgamesh s
power started to irritate the people and they needed someone who would be able to stand up to him.
Hence, the goddess, Aruru, created Enkidu, Gilgamesh s frenemy turned loyal companion. Before
Enkidu became Gilgamesh s friend and loyal companion, he was one with the wild. Instead of
being part human, part god, Enkidu was 1/3rd human and 2/3rds beast. He lived in the forest
with animals only eating grass and drinking out of water holes. He was unaware of the civilized
life outside of the forest. He did not understand the ways of civilized life. Instead he was used to
his primitive ways, he did not know what losses he was facing verses what he was going to gain.

By 4000 BC, Babylonians were wearing clothing out of crudely woven wool fabric. People soon

The World Of The Human Race Essay
Since the beginning of the human race, the ocean has been a major source of food. People near
the shores have been taking of advantage of the ocean s rich and diverse source of nourishment
for centuries, both as a source of food and a livelihood. However, since the dawn of the industrial
age, humans have begun to take from the ocean more that it can give. As a result, the ocean can no
longer provide the human race with the abundance that it once did. As technology rapidly advances,
populations skyrocket, and global warming spreads havoc, the ocean s biodiversity and once
abundant supply of fishis dwindling, calling marine scientists and experts to race to find solutions
that will restore the oceans health while battling world hunger.
If one were to describe what he or she thought of when thinking of the earliest humans, thousands
of years ago, chances are that the clichГ© image of a big game hunter or cave man, running
across a savanna, chasing down wooly methods and saber tooth tigers would come to mind. And
while this hyperbolized scenario may hold some truth to it, a large component of human history is
negated from it. The first known interaction between humans and the sea dates back to nearly
160,000 years ago. Archeologists have discovered remnants of shellfish littering the floors of caves
that were occupied by the earliest known humans. Shellfish were gathered by early humans and

Resolving Work Conflict
Dementia often forces family members to admit their loved ones into long term care facilities.
Unfortunately, a variety of issues commonly arises after admission. For instance, family members,
especially those who have previously taken care of the resident, are sometimes reluctant to allow
changes in the residents routine, medication regimen, diet, etc. This can create conflict because
sometimes changes are necessary in order to create a plan of care capable of enhancing the

Benefits Of Economic Globalization On South Africa Essay
GVPT200 Essay II
South Africa has reaped the benefits of economic globalization first hand as it has emerged to
become a major economic power in Africa, especially in recent years. This country has been
infamously plagued by apartheid, an inhumane policy of segregation based on grounds of race,
which also had economic consequences as trade sanctions were established in 1986 by the United
States in response to South Africa s policy of apartheid. However, apartheid ended in the 1990s and
the South African Development Community was created in 1992 in order to promote economic
development through free trade zones in other regions in Africa. South Africaalso signed free trade
agreements with other regions, including Europe. I am interested in analyzing South Africa from
1991 when severe trade sanctions imposed against South Africa were repealed by the United States
to 2010 when South Africa became part of the esteemed BRICS countries, a major indication of
global economic success. The independent variable is therefore economic globalization, stimulated
by the rescinding of the punitive trade sanctions by the United States in 1991, while the dependent
variable is whether South Africa has done better or worse since 1991 when it became more
connected to the global economy. The indicators for the independent variable are the number of

Nazi Germany And Its Detrimental Effects On The Social...
When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in
Nazism in Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to
deduce that the Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by
force. The truth is that, while the Nazi partyis responsible for the atrocities that occurred before
and during WWII, they would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the
German people themselves. Life in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs
and village life that the Nazi party rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi
Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke discusses the rise of Nazismin the small village of Korle,
discussing how with the rapid political changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic
nation also affected the power balances of small villages. Despite the efforts of the older
generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old traditions, it was their children who wanted
change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and formed the first local branch of the party in
1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted radical solutions to three existential and

Literary Works about Success
In a world full of success gurus and books about success, it becomes ever so more important to
describe the one quality that ultimately leads to success. This plague conquered the human
minds and pushed us, till we came up with the ideas to sell success guiding books and making
money which leads to successfulness. In the story, the house, in which Paul s family lives in, is
personified to be standing for more money: And so the house came to be haunted by the
unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money! The children could
hear it all the time though nobody said it aloud. (151) . This is a symbolic element because it
shows how much greed that house held, and how greed was driven by an addiction to money in
each member of that house. There is never enough money for Paul s mother and the house is
caught the bug of that overwhelming need. It is this insatiable need for money that leads to
consequences in the end as we read in the story and lead to Paul s death. But Paul s death is just a
small fraction of what is going on in the real world. Wars in the name of success were fought and
driven humans to kill each other. A simple example is Napoleon; he conquered in the name of
success. In other words, this communicates the theme of how money corrupts humanity. In the short
story, The Rocking Horse Winner, there is a little boy who competed for his mother s love, and his
mother brought her son to his death with her confusing vocabulary.

A Summary Of The Progressive Era
During the late 19th and early 20th, there were many problems caused by the rapid urbanization
and industrialization. In response, a group of individuals came together and their goal was to
reform the United States. During this era people were dealing with problems such as poverty,
the breakdown of democratic government, and the exploitation of labor. In addition, very
limited group of people owned the majority of wealth of this country. This individuals were
trying to reduce the long working hours, and as Zinn says: bring a remedy to changes that the
industrialization was causing.(Zinn 354) The main fear of people was the destruction of the
democratic government and free economic opportunity. Progressive consist of the new middle
class professionals, who were looking for new changes in the society. In addition, some
journalist, some political reformers were part of the progressive as well. What is interesting,
based on the readings, they have never made a movement oddly. Their ideas were usually too
diverse to fit together. As it was mentioned earlier, people were mainly either workers or
employers. The employers had the main wealth, while the workers struggled to survive. The
working hours were so long, the wages were too low to support their families, and it was always
a chance to get unemployed. (Zinn 257) In order to survive, progressive came up with the idea of
public ownership of government run by professionals. They were mainly focused to resolve the
issue caused by

Use Of Mathematics In Texas Hold Em Poker Game
Thesis: How significant is the use of mathematics in the Texas Hold em Poker Game? How can you
deduce the probability of winning and infer the strategy from your starting hand?
Rationale:
I have decided to focus this math exploration project on the mathematics within the leisure card
game Texas Hold em. On first impression, the outcome of any poker game seems to be entirely
arbitrary and based solely on the player s pure luck. However, after we dismiss the wildy
exaggerated poker legends we see in myriads of television programs and movies, in reality experts
in the game of poker who are just able to have a higher win rate than amateurs do exist. If this
game is simple based on random fortune, there would not be the various competitions held
worldwide each year and the game would have been a lot less interesting. The strategies within
poker games consist of two categories, mathematics and psychology, with the former determining
and altering the latter. Therefore, in this investigation I would seek to explore the factors in the first
pre flop that sets the tone for the duration of the round; how would the initial hand determine what
would be advantageous in the flop; and what distinguishes experts from the amateurs.
Introduction:
Each poker deck has fifty two cards, each designated by one of four suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts
and spades) and one of thirteen ranks (the numbers two through ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace).
In the game Texas Hold em, we can deduce the

yoghurt, fruit yoghurt, Sharri cheese, curd and caciocavalo) was studied during 2007 using
different socio economic variables assessed by so called evaluation criteria 1 5. The objective of
study was to possibly identify effect of different variables on consumer decision upon purchase of
dairy products. Dairy products were perceived differently at various types of purchasing places. The

Nafta Negative Effects
Mexico
NAFTA has had positive effects on Mexico, which have not been evenly distributed in the whole
country. For example, it helped improve the productivity of Mexicans. They adopted technological
innovations from the US which helped them grow their automotive industries as well. Jobs
increased considerably and macroeconomic volatility among Mexicans reduced. Coordination of
businesses between Canada and Mexico helped Mexico adapt technological innovations from the
US much easier. However, NAFTA generally failed to improve the overall economy of Mexico
because there were not supportive policies to facilitate the provisions that NAFTA gave. Sectors
such as the education and infrastructure development suffered as a result. This led to this ... Show

Free trade does encourage economic integration, but it can be detrimental to a country if its
policies to do support provisions given by free trade agreements as were the case for Mexico.
NAFTA seems not to have benefited Mexico in comparison to Canada and the US, for example
because US subsidized agriculture led to many job losses in the country because they could not
keep up. Also, free trade also gives some countries more advantages compared to other partners,
especially if they are more advanced economically. In the case of NAFTA, the US had more to
gain compared to other countries because it was largely more developed economically than the
other two countries. NAFTA would be fair if it considered the developmental level of its countries
and if it could be applied specifically depending on the level on which a partner is. Also,
improvement of Chapter 11 of the NAFTA investment chapter would be beneficial. Chapter 11 of its
investment chapter protects corporations from those Canada and the US from policies that could
possibly hinder generation of profits (Council of Canadians). Improvement of this chapter can help

2016
Abstract This case study is about analyzing the Whistler Corporation business issues. The Whistler
Corporation at some point had to make a very important business decision. The decision was about
if the company should continue manufacturing operations in the US or not. The company had
experience some serious problems with the domestic production in the US, where competing with
companies that had their supplies imported from the east Asia become impossible. The Whistler
Corporation hired a consulting company to solve these issues and also to help with manufacturing
process. The corporation management had to make big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1986, the companies profit started to decrease drastically. The Whistler corp. loss more than
$500,000 per month. It was the time to do something radical to recover the company and to turn it
back to the top of the market.
In that period Charles Stott was on the head of Whistler corp. To save the companies future he put
in action three alternatives. Firstly, he focused on the the whole reconstruction of the biggest
problem in company, the production process, such as control of inventory process, but many
other things had to be reconstructed in order to achieve these goals such as new inventory
process, products with the bigger quality, better functionality of processing, and usage of the plant
had to be more organized. Secondly, the company would have to hire an affordable supplier of
their radar detectors, which will improve the relationship with company and external suppliers,
usage of the both plants and lower price. The third alternative and the last one was closing the
doors of both plant, and making a big change on the production district by moving the whole
production process to an off shore location, that would not be easy to apply, but it would crucially
decrease the cost of production process. The issues with the market competition, and foreign
suppliers, in this case east Asia market didn t only reflected only on the Whistler Corporation, it
reflected on many other companies in manufacturing market, they also had issues and had to

Motivation In The Book Anthem
Anthem In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand the main character, Equality, is assigned the job as a
street sweeper by the Council of Voacations. The reason that he is placed as a street sweeper is a
more sinister motivation that the council has. The Council of Vocations had a more sinister
motivation when assigning him the job. They know that he is smart. He has the ability to learn
quickly, making the assumption that he was given the job due to incometence false. It was not
that the learning was too hard for us. It was that the learning was too easy (Rand 21). He is
advanced among other students and learns very quickly, but it is wrong in society s eyse to be
smarter than anyone else. You are supposed to have the knowledge of your brothers. This is a
great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick (Rand 21). In order to prevent him from

Materiality In English Literature
Medieval Things: Materiality, Objects, and Literary Practice
In this seminar we will study critical works of medieval English literature along current theoretical
writing that shares an interest in things and objects. Since the 1980s, the humanities and social
sciences have developed new approaches of thinking about materiality. Early work in material
culture targeted at the social productivity of objects created by humans. However, essential
approaches often grouped beneath the time period new materialist have questioned this human
focused angle, suggesting rather that the human beings and things are essentially distinctive in a
particular modern concept. Philosopher and historian Bruno Latour, argued that the line between
humans and natural phenomena the line between object and subject was more permeable prior to
the seventeenth century. Our seminar will dive into this claim, analyzing English medieval
literature and philosophy. The readings will include texts written by Bill Brown, Jane Bennet,
Gilles Deleuze, Sara Ahmed and Manuel De Landa; and medieval literature by William Langland
(Piers Plowman), Geoffrey Chaucer (dream visions and some of the Canterbury Tales), Marie de
France (short romances called Lays), Julian of Norwich (A Revelation of Love), Thomas Malory
(Morte Darthur).

The Struggle for Power in The Yellow Wallpaper, Daddy,...
American Literature
9 March 2013
The Struggle for Power in The Yellow Wallpaper, Daddy, and Editha Charlotte Perkins Gilman s
piece, The Yellow Wallpaper (written in 1890, published in 1892), is a semi autobiographical piece
that, although believed to be a result of her severe postpartum depression, illustrates the difficulties
faced by women during the Women s Movement. These difficulties are further illustrated by the
similarly semi autobiographical poem, based on Plath s father and husband, Daddy by Sylvia Plath
(written in 1962, published in 1965). These gender roles are then reversed in Editha, (written in
1898, published in 1905) which has been said to be William Dean Howells s response to the Spanish
American War.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The initial description of this woman is of her stooping down and creeping about. The woman in
the wallpaper is a direct reflection of the narrator s confidence and feelings of inferiority, and the
change they undergo. Initially, the woman in the wall symbolizes the narrator s fear of
presenting herself and her opinions, and being her husband s equal. She begins to display a
building confidence in herself, and an almost amused view of John s orders. When John tells her
that she seems to be doing well, in spite of the wallpaper, she has to stop herself from openly
laughing. It is at this point, where she is building confidence in herself, that she begins to see the
woman in the wallpaper more clearly. She states, I think that woman gets out in the daytime! And I
ll tell you why privately I ve seen her! symbolizing her confidence beginning to emerge. Finally,
she allows herself to be fully confident; she allows her mind to fully explore the wallpaper. The
lines, then I peeled off all the paper I could reach standing on the floor. It sticks horribly and the
pattern just enjoys it, symbolizes the destruction of that which limits her. One may argue that she
has had a psychotic break, but the intention of these lines is to show the narrator gaining
confidence. As Gilman says herself in an article submitted to the October 1913 issue of The
Forerunner regarding her treatment: then, using the remnants of intelligence that remained [...] I

Government Control Over Surveillance
In today s society we are being watched way too much. Some of the times we are being watched,
we know about it and other times, we don t. The government, with a few clicks of a button, can
watch what websites you go to, your text messages, even the pictures you send to your
grandmother last Christmas, without your knowledge of them doing so. They hold too much
power over surveillance of U.S. citizens. There are plenty of incidents where the NSA (National
Security Agency) was caught taking files of citizens messages, incoming and outgoing phone calls.
Governmental surveillance is going too far, and now it seems like they are watching you at every
corner. It is overwhelming. The governmenthas a great deal of control over surveillance because
they can watch anyone through cameras, messages, and spy on people through the data from phone
companies all over.

you. Just like in the book, The Codebreaker, the Puppet Master talks about how the government
is and says It s time for both of us to collect some observation data. I ll do it for fun (Petry 2). The
government and the Puppet Master have the watching over people together. When you think about
cases where the government can pull up messages you send to people in court, they do not get the
information from you directly, they get it indirectly from your phone history. They can also pull
your call log, the duration of the call, where you called from and much more. The government has

An Analysis Of Seamus Heaney s Mid-Term Break
For most students, a break in school signifies the end of classes for the term and a well deserved
vacation after a week of intense finals. For others, it is an opportunity to return home to the
comfort of family and friends. Yet other students take advantage of the opportunity to earn some
money. However, it can also be a time of change. Seamus Heaneys Mid Term Break brilliantly
depicts the feeling of loss by using irony, imagery, time and symbolism to detail the timing of
events when a tragedy occurs in his family.
Heaney first uses irony in the title giving readers the sense that the poem will be about the
exciting and fun times of a school break. The word mid term references a point in time as Heaney
begins to describe the time line of events of a student when a personal tragedy occurs back home.
Another reference to time is the word break used here to signify that something has come to an end.
Heaney writes the poem in a chronological order to show how he dealt with the emotional aspect
of death as a student. The poem begins with I sat all morning in the college sick bay (l. 1) to
establish the starting time and provides the approximate age (time) of the student. The use of the
word sick is a clue that the break is not a typical ending to the school term. When someone goes to
the nurse s office during school, it is usually because they are sick. Heaney first uses symbolism
with the careful choice of the words Counting bells knelling classes to

Implementing Job Analysis Components For Recruitment,...
Organizations have recently been investing greater capital and time into human resources seeing as
it impacts companies presently more than it has previously. With the focus on human resources,
companies can gain a competitive advantage by maintaining sustainability, as well as solving
challenges on a global and technological level. Second Dimension International (SDI) Marketing
has recently faced issues affecting their intangible assets that are detrimental to the company s
sustainability. Implementing job analysis components will aid in the resolution of problems
associated with recruitment, training, communication, and retention for SDI. SDI has been in

As long as SDI continues to receive contracts from recognized companies, their economic growth
will continue to rise. However, the continuation of contracts will only be plausible if the issues and
subsequent recommendations presented will be initiated and executed. When a particular market
or industry experiences sudden growth, it is difficult for companies to immediately adapt to the
changes in order to be efficient and effective. With companies spending more of their capital on
providing an experience for their audience, SDI is a company who must adapt to these changes
proficiently. Unfortunately, there are still opportunities for the marketing firm to strengthen and
grow. SDI s intangible assets including human capital pose a threat to the company s sustainability,
as they are vital to a company s competitive advantage. The company s main drawback is their
inability to manage their talent in terms of attracting, retaining, and developing. This not only
increases SDI s recruitment and training costs but it also effects employee morale and engagement.

Censorship Is An Issue That Affects Us On A Global Scale
The loudest silence is that of censorship. An individual may feel very strongly about a subject,
and have their voice silenced by those older, or who disagree with them. Censorship is an issue
that affects us on a global scale. It ranges from issues of women s rights, to whether or not it is
alright to wear certain words or logos to school. It is something that has affected educational
opportunities all over the world, and censorship goes too far when it affects children s learning
capabilities. All students, from all races, religions, or genders, should be allowed to research what
they want, when they want, so long as they do not harm someone else.

They are censored because they bring up tough questions and school administrators feel the best
answer is to not answer them.
This is an issue as it places the government as well as the school authorities in tough positions.
They may make a decision that is not in favor of a certain group of people, and they may have to
meet the backlash that comes from their actions. Parents may respond to certain issues when they
differ from home values, or may support issues when they agree with home values. Students may
stand up for their own freedoms and values, whether that is support or revulsion on a certain issue.
Censorship can come in many shapes and forms; some may appear good on the surface, but
what underlying notions come with them? If a school chooses to ban the book Huckleberry
Finn for its usage of the N word, they may see that as a good usage of censorship. For example, a
class of students said the book Huckleberry Finn [made] them uncomfortable (McDaniel).
However, the problem arises when there comes a piece of literature that has the N word, or any
other type of hurtful language, inside of it and does not get removed from the shelves.
Cases may also come in the forms of an individual losing their job for speaking out against an issue.
A teacher was fired from his job at San Gabriel High School, when students found out about this
incident they inquired about the reason for his termination. The administration did not reply
(Tompkins). This is an issue

India and Pakistan Dispute Essay
India and Pakistan Dispute This dispute dates back to the partition of the British Indian Empire, in
August 1947, into two independent states, Pakistan and India. At that time there were also around
565 princely states, large and small, which were under British suzerainty but were not directly ruled
by the British Government. Most of these states joined either India or Pakistan taking into account
their contiguity to one or the other country and the wishes of their people.

the Hindu ruler was likely to succumb to Indian pressure, the people of Jammu and Kashmir rose
against him, forcing him to flee from Srinagar, the capital of the State. They formed their own
government on 24th October, 1947. On 27th of October, 1947, the Government of India alleged
that the ruler had acceded to India on the basis of a fraudulent instrument of accession, sent its
forces into the State and occupied a large part of Jammu and Kashmir.
But Indian leaders, including Jawahar lal Nehru, the Prime Minister and Lord Mountbatten, the
then Governor General of India, solemnly declared that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir
would be decided by the people of the State. This declaration was reiterated by India at the UN
Security Council when the dispute was referred to that august body, under chapter 6 of the U.N

African American Suicide
Summary
Low suicide and eating disorder rates among African Americans suggest that, individuals of the
African American community may have effective coping mechanisms to help protect against such
pathological behaviors. It is proposed that one of the main mechanisms is the continued dependence
on Afrocentric identification versus a more Eurocentric one. Thus, it is the aim of this study to
investigate if and under what conditions ethnic identification becomes a predictor of suicide in
African American men and eating disorder symptomatology in African American women.
Acculturative stress is associated with feelings of marginality, isolation, anxiety, and lowered self
concepts (Thompson, Anderson, Bakeman, 2000) and identity confusion (Berry et al., 1987) in
minorities. When looking at the association between identity and ... Show more content on

This is especially true among minority group women who report acculturative stress (Perez, et al.
2001). Evidence contrary to these findings indicate that ethnic identification no longer represents a
protective factor for eating disorders because all ethnic groups have acculturated the mainstream
values related to body image and thinness ideals.
Although African Americans, historically, have lower rates of suicide and eating disorders, there is
some indication that these behaviors may be increasing. From the preceding studies, it appears that
both acculturative stress and ethnic identification may play some important role in the mental
health of African Americans. What is not evident, however, is if and how these two factors interact
to predict both suicide and eating disorder symptoms in African American men and women,
respectively. Such an effect may provide insight into the occurrence of these behaviors in the

  • 2. How to Read Literature Like a Professor Chapter 3 Nice To Eat You: Acts of Vampires Chapter Summary: Ghosts and vampires are never only about ghosts and vampires. There s a thin line between the ordinary and the monstrous. Sex: Evil, lust, seduction, temptation, danger. Evil has been related to sex ever since the serpent tempted Eve. Exploitation: using other people to get what we want, placing our desires above others. Vampires and other figures are used where someone grows by weakening someone else. Connections: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne: Hester wearing the scarlet letter A is a perfect example of exploitation. By making her weaker, idealistic society grows stronger. Chapter 15 Flights of Fancy Chapter Summary: Human beings can t fly, so if something can fly, it s not human. Flight is freedom. When a character has the ability to fly they are free from the burdens of everyday life. Connections: The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus: By giving Icarus the ability to fly, he has a freedom unfathomed by most. This freedom is too much for someone to handle and he does even what he is told not to, by flying close to the sun. Sophie s World by Jostein Gaarder: In one of Alberto s letters to Sophie he talked about flying. A small experiment shows Sophie the difference between the ideas of a child and a grown adult, and how something like flying can get such a different reaction from the two. One morning, Mom, Dad and little Thomas, aged two or three, are having breakfast in the kitchen. After a while Mom gets up and goes over to the kitchen sink, and Dad yes, Dad flies up and floats around under the ceiling while Thomas sits watching. What do you think? Thomas says. Perhaps he points up at his father and says: Daddy s flying! Thomas will certainly be astonished, but then he very often is. Dad does so many strange things that this business of a little flight over the breakfast table makes no difference to him. Now it s Mom s turn. She hears what Thomas says and turns around abruptly. How do you think she reacts to the sight of Dad floating nonchalantly over the kitchen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Risks Caused By Foreign Currency Derivatives On The... NestlГ© S.A. is a Swiss company and owns a prestigious position being the world s leading nutrition, health and wellness group (NestlГ©, 2016). According to its annual report (2015), this company is exposed to many risks caused by movements in foreign currency exchange rates, interest rate and market prices. The foreign exchange risk comes from transactions and translations of foreign operations in Swiss Francs (CHF). The interest rate risk faces the borrowings at fixed and variable rates. The market price risk comes from commodity price and equity price. The former risk arises from world commodity market for the supplies of coffee, cocoa beans, sugar and others. The later risk arises from the fluctuations of the prices of investments held. (Nestle annual reports, 2015). Thus, financial derivatives instruments are used by this multinational corporation in order to hedge these risks. Moreover, because of the huge worldwide extension of the corporation, which operates in 194 countries, the use of foreign currency derivatives to minimize the earnings volatility would be the subject of later analysis. The report will focus on how NestlГ© uses futures and option contracts to hedge its exposure to currency risk, centering our attention in NestlГ© Home Currency, the Swiss Franc in relation to the US Dollar (USD/CHF). It will be examined an example of its hedging strategy and the information provided by a contact in the firm. 2.Currency risk: USD/CHF ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Restorative Justice Case Study Introduction Over the course of both my undergraduate and master s programs in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding (NCRP), I have wanted to further study the concept of Restorative Justice. Though it has surfaced several times throughout my NCRP coursework, it has mostly been in the context of international conflict. Thus, I have often wondered how Restorative Justice might work in a more local context. That local context revealed itself in my current role as one of two fathers of a first grader in a school in Long Beach. Helena, our six year old daughter, attends a small private school with 160 students in grades K 8. The school community regards itself as being a large, caring, tight knit extended family, while the administration has been explicit in stating that the incidence of bullying on the campus is little to none. Our experience as a family in the nearly two years that we have been part of the community has been otherwise. Here are three bullying scenarios that we ve experienced or heard of occurring in our school community: In our first year, two male classmates called our daughter fat when she was in Kindergarten. Radiohead s OK Computer reveals that society s obsession with hiding vulnerability through repeating symbolism, lyrical metaphors, and By using repeating symbolic imagery, OK Computer shows that ruling power structures, like religion and corporations, center around vulnerability in how they gain influence and in how they are motivated. Additionally, in order to maintain their influence, these powers have to put up a front of indestructibility while also managing internal struggles. Planes crashes are depicted throughout the album s artwork, a symbol of innovation and monetary means that has failed and brought people down with it. Planes, much like corporations, are supposed to have very few chinks in their armor, but both can go down; both are vulnerable under their guise of perfection. There is also the case of religion, where a statue of Jesus is seen being worshipped by a considerably smaller family. Religion is a form of protection, both for the herd immunity and for the surety of an afterlife, and the family is beneath, quite vulnerable. However, the statue is white, like the scribbles surrounding it, while the family is not and would take more work to scribble over because of this. Laboratory Techniques Used For Forensic Anthropology Laboratory techniques used in forensic anthropology to identify questionable remains as bone include histology, protein analysis, and DNA analysis. The problem with these techniques is that they can be destructive, lengthy, and expensive. Additionally, these methods may not be able to identify bone when it is highly fragmented or altered. Therefore, chemical analysis techniques such as HHXRF, XRF, SEM/EDS, PIXE, and Raman Spectroscopyhave been proposed for differentiating bone and teeth from non skeletal material and human from nonhuman skeletal material. Although their use is sporadic and dependent on instrument availability, these chemical techniques have proven valuable to the field of forensic anthropology and to the task of identifying human remains. Depending on the bone or location on the bone, there will be a difference in trace elements present. Zn, V, Ni, Cr, Pb, Mn, Co, and Sn are found in higher concentrations in bone epiphyses while Ca, Sr, Na, and K are found more often in the central portion of the diaphysis. This could potentially tell what bone the anthropologist has obtained if it is a fragmented piece. Diet and growth environment also have an impact on the distribution of trace elements within bone. While this is useful in identification, research is also being conducted to establish past dietary habits by using isotope analysis to detect specific trace element ratios associated with dietary patterns to gain a better understanding of the past. What s Definition Of Intelligence And Tell Me What... 1.Please parse Wechsler s definition of intelligence and tell me what exactly did Wechsler mean? 2.How did he come to understand intelligence as he did? Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environment (Wechsler, 1939 p. 3). Wechsler explains that it is global because it characterizes the individual s behavior as a whole, it is aggregate because it is composed of elements or abilities which are qualitatively differentiable. Wechsler further explains that intelligence is not just a sum of these abilities. Intelligent behavior is a result of the interaction of these abilities. Intelligent behavior can be determined by other factors than intellectual abilities, such as drive and incentive. An excess of any given ability may add relatively little to the effectiveness of a behavior as a whole. Wechsler differentiates between intelligence and intellectual abilities. Although intelligence is no mere sum of intellectual abilities, the only way we can evaluate it quantitatively is by the measurement of the various aspects of these abilities .(Wechsler, Wechsler conceptualization of intelligence had been influenced by Spearman who pioneered the concept of g as global intelligence. People near the shores have been taking of advantage of the ocean s rich and diverse source of nourishment for centuries, both as a source of food and a livelihood. However, since the dawn of the industrial age, humans have begun to take from the ocean more that it can give. As a result, the ocean can no longer provide the human race with the abundance that it once did. As technology rapidly advances, populations skyrocket, and global warming spreads havoc, the ocean s biodiversity and once abundant supply of fishis dwindling, calling marine scientists and experts to race to find solutions that will restore the oceans health while battling world hunger. If one were to describe what he or she thought of when thinking of the earliest humans, thousands of years ago, chances are that the clichГ© image of a big game hunter or cave man, running across a savanna, chasing down wooly methods and saber tooth tigers would come to mind. And while this hyperbolized scenario may hold some truth to it, a large component of human history is negated from it. The first known interaction between humans and the sea dates back to nearly 160,000 years ago. What s not to like? And we don t even need a pardon after reading it, because in the end, it s a morality lesson (Do you get it?) Anyways, the pilgrims are going on a trip from London to Canterbury, where a group of medieval pilgrims are making their way to visit the remains of Saint Thomas Becket in the hope of getting some forgiveness from sin. To pass the time, they take turns telling stories. They will each tell a tale and the one they find the most amusing they will get a prize! One of them is a Pardoner, a low level Church official who travels around selling pardons, which are just what they sound like. Pardons are documents signed by the Pope that grants pardon for sins. The host asks the pardoner to tell a tale. Before he began his tale, the Pardoner exposes himself. Before he starts his tale, he reveals himself. He does that by revealing the tricks of his trade to all the pilgrims. This Pardoner roams all over the countryside giving out pardons and fake relics just to get money. • 40. Benefits Of Economic Globalization On South Africa Essay GVPT200 Essay II South Africa has reaped the benefits of economic globalization first hand as it has emerged to become a major economic power in Africa, especially in recent years. This country has been infamously plagued by apartheid, an inhumane policy of segregation based on grounds of race, which also had economic consequences as trade sanctions were established in 1986 by the United States in response to South Africa s policy of apartheid. However, apartheid ended in the 1990s and the South African Development Community was created in 1992 in order to promote economic development through free trade zones in other regions in Africa. South Africaalso signed free trade agreements with other regions, including Europe. I am interested in analyzing South Africa from 1991 when severe trade sanctions imposed against South Africa were repealed by the United States to 2010 when South Africa became part of the esteemed BRICS countries, a major indication of global economic success. The independent variable is therefore economic globalization, stimulated by the rescinding of the punitive trade sanctions by the United States in 1991, while the dependent variable is whether South Africa has done better or worse since 1991 when it became more connected to the global economy. The indicators for the independent variable are the number of level of trade barriers, the repeal of Comprehensive Anti Apartheid Act, openness to free trade and free trade agreements, exports, and ... When looking into the history of Germany and determining what led to the startling rise in Nazism in Germany and its detrimental effects on the social outcasts in Europe, it can be easy to deduce that the Nazi regime was one where Hitler walked in with his officials and took office by force. The truth is that, while the Nazi partyis responsible for the atrocities that occurred before and during WWII, they would have not gotten far if it hadn t been for the cooperation of the German people themselves. Life in the Third Reich provides proof through voting, youth programs and village life that the Nazi party rose into power with German support. In Village Life in Nazi Germany, essayist Gerhard Wilke discusses the rise of Nazismin the small village of Korle, discussing how with the rapid political changes in Germany from an empire to a democratic nation also affected the power balances of small villages. Despite the efforts of the older generations to keep some sort of semblance of the old traditions, it was their children who wanted change and found themselves attracted to Nazism and formed the first local branch of the party in 1928. The reason for this, Wilke says is that they wanted radical solutions to three existential and ideological problems: the survival of their generation as independent farmer, the preservation of their political dominance, and the suppression of their enemies (The Jews and the working class). • 42. Literary Works about Success In a world full of success gurus and books about success, it becomes ever so more important to describe the one quality that ultimately leads to success. This plague conquered the human minds and pushed us, till we came up with the ideas to sell success guiding books and making money which leads to successfulness. In the story, the house, in which Paul s family lives in, is personified to be standing for more money: And so the house came to be haunted by the unspoken phrase: There must be more money! There must be more money! The children could hear it all the time though nobody said it aloud. (151) . This is a symbolic element because it shows how much greed that house held, and how greed was driven by an addiction to money in each member of that house. There is never enough money for Paul s mother and the house is caught the bug of that overwhelming need. It is this insatiable need for money that leads to consequences in the end as we read in the story and lead to Paul s death. But Paul s death is just a small fraction of what is going on in the real world. Wars in the name of success were fought and driven humans to kill each other. A simple example is Napoleon; he conquered in the name of success. In other words, this communicates the theme of how money corrupts humanity. In the short story, The Rocking Horse Winner, there is a little boy who competed for his mother s love, and his mother brought her son to his death with her confusing vocabulary. ... • 44. Use Of Mathematics In Texas Hold Em Poker Game Thesis: How significant is the use of mathematics in the Texas Hold em Poker Game? How can you deduce the probability of winning and infer the strategy from your starting hand? Rationale: I have decided to focus this math exploration project on the mathematics within the leisure card game Texas Hold em. On first impression, the outcome of any poker game seems to be entirely arbitrary and based solely on the player s pure luck. However, after we dismiss the wildy exaggerated poker legends we see in myriads of television programs and movies, in reality experts in the game of poker who are just able to have a higher win rate than amateurs do exist. If this game is simple based on random fortune, there would not be the various competitions held worldwide each year and the game would have been a lot less interesting. The strategies within poker games consist of two categories, mathematics and psychology, with the former determining and altering the latter. Therefore, in this investigation I would seek to explore the factors in the first pre flop that sets the tone for the duration of the round; how would the initial hand determine what would be advantageous in the flop; and what distinguishes experts from the amateurs. Introduction: Each poker deck has fifty two cards, each designated by one of four suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades) and one of thirteen ranks (the numbers two through ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace). American Literature 9 March 2013 The Struggle for Power in The Yellow Wallpaper, Daddy, and Editha Charlotte Perkins Gilman s piece, The Yellow Wallpaper (written in 1890, published in 1892), is a semi autobiographical piece that, although believed to be a result of her severe postpartum depression, illustrates the difficulties faced by women during the Women s Movement. These difficulties are further illustrated by the similarly semi autobiographical poem, based on Plath s father and husband, Daddy by Sylvia Plath (written in 1962, published in 1965). These gender roles are then reversed in Editha, (written in 1898, published in 1905) which has been said to be William Dean Howells s response to the Spanish American War.... She begins to display a building confidence in herself, and an almost amused view of John s orders. • 52. An Analysis Of Seamus Heaney s Mid-Term Break For most students, a break in school signifies the end of classes for the term and a well deserved vacation after a week of intense finals. For others, it is an opportunity to return home to the comfort of family and friends. Yet other students take advantage of the opportunity to earn some money. However, it can also be a time of change. Seamus Heaneys Mid Term Break brilliantly depicts the feeling of loss by using irony, imagery, time and symbolism to detail the timing of events when a tragedy occurs in his family. Heaney first uses irony in the title giving readers the sense that the poem will be about the exciting and fun times of a school break. The word mid term references a point in time as Heaney begins to describe the time line of events of a student when a personal tragedy occurs back home. Another reference to time is the word break used here to signify that something has come to an end. Heaney writes the poem in a chronological order to show how he dealt with the emotional aspect of death as a student. The poem begins with I sat all morning in the college sick bay (l. 1) to establish the starting time and provides the approximate age (time) of the student. The use of the word sick is a clue that the break is not a typical ending to the school term. When someone goes to the nurse s office during school, it is usually because they are sick. For example, a class of students said the book Huckleberry Finn [made] them uncomfortable (McDaniel). However, the problem arises when there comes a piece of literature that has the N word, or any other type of hurtful language, inside of it and does not get removed from the shelves. Cases may also come in the forms of an individual losing their job for speaking out against an issue. A teacher was fired from his job at San Gabriel High School, when students found out about this incident they inquired about the reason for his termination. The administration did not reply (Tompkins). This is an issue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. India and Pakistan Dispute Essay India and Pakistan Dispute This dispute dates back to the partition of the British Indian Empire, in August 1947, into two independent states, Pakistan and India. At that time there were also around 565 princely states, large and small, which were under British suzerainty but were not directly ruled by the British Government. Most of these states joined either India or Pakistan taking into account their contiguity to one or the other country and the wishes of their people. There were, however, some states over which problems arose, primarily because of India s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, India consistently pressurized the Hindu Ruler to accede to India. Apprehending that the Hindu ruler was likely to succumb to Indian pressure, the people of Jammu and Kashmir rose against him, forcing him to flee from Srinagar, the capital of the State. They formed their own government on 24th October, 1947. On 27th of October, 1947, the Government of India alleged that the ruler had acceded to India on the basis of a fraudulent instrument of accession, sent its forces into the State and occupied a large part of Jammu and Kashmir. But Indian leaders, including Jawahar lal Nehru, the Prime Minister and Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor General of India, solemnly declared that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir would be decided by the people of the State. This declaration was reiterated by India at the UN Security Council when the dispute was referred to that august body, under chapter 6 of the U.N Charter relating to peaceful settlement of disputes. The Security Council adopted a number of resolutions on the issue, providing for the holding of a fair and impartial plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir under UN auspices to enable the Kashmiri people to exercise their right of self determination and join either Pakistan or India. The UN also deployed the United Nations Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) to monitor the cease fire line ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. African American Suicide Summary Low suicide and eating disorder rates among African Americans suggest that, individuals of the African American community may have effective coping mechanisms to help protect against such pathological behaviors. It is proposed that one of the main mechanisms is the continued dependence on Afrocentric identification versus a more Eurocentric one. Thus, it is the aim of this study to investigate if and under what conditions ethnic identification becomes a predictor of suicide in African American men and eating disorder symptomatology in African American women. Acculturative stress is associated with feelings of marginality, isolation, anxiety, and lowered self concepts (Thompson, Anderson, Bakeman, 2000) and identity confusion (Berry et al., 1987) in minorities. When looking at the association between identity and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is especially true among minority group women who report acculturative stress (Perez, et al. 2001). Evidence contrary to these findings indicate that ethnic identification no longer represents a protective factor for eating disorders because all ethnic groups have acculturated the mainstream values related to body image and thinness ideals. Although African Americans, historically, have lower rates of suicide and eating disorders, there is some indication that these behaviors may be increasing. From the preceding studies, it appears that both acculturative stress and ethnic identification may play some important role in the mental health of African Americans. What is not evident, however, is if and how these two factors interact to predict both suicide and eating disorder symptoms in African American men and women, respectively. Such an effect may provide insight into the occurrence of these behaviors in the African American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
