Annotated Bibliography
Journals:
Denson, N., Chang, M. (2009). Racial Diversity Matters: The Impact of Diversity Related Student
Engagement and Institutional Context. American Educational Research Journal, 46, 322 353.
This article discusses the different forms of racial diversity contribution to students educational and
learning experiences and the autonomous positive effects on students who adopt these diversity
opportunities. The author demonstrates how the quality of higher education is substantially
heightened by diversity connected efforts. Those efforts improve students learning and experiences
by cultivating key behaviors and knowledge and by providing a unique educational context.

The author clearly communicates the idea of preservation of white supremacy through a set of race
tools that were used to keep minorities in place. Since this paper was recently published, it can be
easily related to the current education system. The conclusions that the author arrives is justified by
the results presented. The idea of racial stereotypes and assumptions by white dominant teachers
can easily be included in the evidence of institutionalized racism present in the US public schooling
system. This source helps shape the argument of institutionalized racism through the evidence of
race tools used by teachers presented in the study. Picower does an excellent job providing a context
for the views many teachers hold towards minority students in the current educational system.
Pilkington, A. (2013). The interacting dynamics of institutional racism in higher education. Race
Ethnicity and Education, 16(2), 225 245.
This article brings an insightful and well reasoned analysis of the case study of institutional racism
in a university. The paper disclosed the extent of the disadvantages faced by the minority students
and staff and the institutions failure to respond to the racial discrimination faced by these groups.
Through this paper, Pilkington demonstrates how a certain university addressed the issue of racial
equality. They draw on their

Socialization In Toronto Essay
Toronto is a city in Ontario Canada. It is very close to New York and Michigan. As of 2017,
Toronto s population is 6,417,516. Toronto has been a city since 1793 and is 224 years old.
Toronto has warm summers averaging 70 degrees Fahrenheit and cold winters averaging 28 degrees
Fahrenheit. Toronto has many beautiful natural features such as ravines, woodlands, and the
shoreline of Lake Iroquois. Torontois Canadas banking and distribution hot spot.
Toronto has the third largest public transit system after New York City and Mexico City. Toronto s
water treats, transmits, stores and distributes more than one billion liters of potable water daily
which it distributes through 6,000 km of water mains. Toronto community housing also provides
citizens with affordable housing that they might not have been able to afford.
Our futuristic elements are moving sidewalks and buses that hover using maglev technology. Our

Holden Caulfield Depression
Today, 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression, over 5% of the entire population on
Earth (Healthline). While 5% may not seem like much, it is absolutely appalling to think that any
one person deserves to feel depressed. Despite being apart of the human mind ever since creation,
doctors and psychologists today are still struggling to understand what causes the mindto break
down to a state of utter sadness and self loathing. Even more troubling is the fact that not many
people, primarily parents, are exposed to the utter damage that the disorder may cause to their
children. Unlike physical disorders, injuries, or other illnesses that attack the body, depression
attacks the mind. Depression can take the brightest day and turn it... Show more content on

Despite being a fictional character, the mental issues Holden faces throughout the novel have
stood the test of time, and are now more prevalent than ever before. Whether it s a rough break
up, the loss of a loved one, or parental negligence, every single person has hit a low at one point
in their life. The problem is, much like in the case of our Holden Caulfield, that these people
may not receive the proper care and attention required to avoid slipping deeper. That is why
millions of people, teenagers and adults alike, suffer from depression of many different types
and severities. This story provides only a glimpse into what goes on inside the mind of a
growing teenager suffering from the disorder. At the time of release, the 1950s, it is reported
that depression was considered a rarity, and a taboo one at that. Mental illnesses were not treated
nearly as well back then as they are today. In the 50s, Holden s only solution would be to see a
psychoanalyst, which readers do see at the very end of the story. However today, with depression
and suicide at an all time high, Holden would be treated much differently. In the modern world of
medicine and psychological support, Holden would be most likely been able to be treated with
antidepressant medication like Lexapro or Zoloft, pills that would slowly help his mental state be

This paper provides details about the Vermont Teddy Bear
, Inc. s history, mission and goals; its
business situation, and its efforts to achieve profitability and a sustainable competitive advantage
(SCA) during the period from 1993 to 1998. Also included are discussions, conclusions, and
recommendations about the strategic overhaul imposed by its current CEO, Elisabeth Robert.
In 1981, John Sortino, who was inspired by his infant son to produce a teddy bear made in the
United States, founded the Vermont Teddy Bear Company
. Limited production of his creations

Case Analysis Of Alibaba
Alibaba, the owner of the largest shopping website of Taobao and T mall, is considered to be a
successful company and it became listed in the United States. After being listed, Alibaba face
more challenges and opportunities. The high rate of counterfeits makes consumers lose
confidence in Alibaba and it has been sued by some large brands, such as Gucci and Kering.
Fake items are a big issue for Alibab and Harley Lewin, a lawyer, even says that it will go broke if
it eliminates all fake goods (Schuman). The seemingly fake financial statement also damages its
reputation. The situation is aggravated by decreasing purchase power of Chinese, economic
depression, and competition from other shopping websites, such as JingDong and Amazon.
However,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Launch more products, such as personal finance service in funds and insurances. Considering the
decreasing purchase power, Alibaba needs to think about new businesses. As the third party
payment platform of Alibaba, the service of Alipay is single. Alipay needs to expand the
cooperation with domestic and international banks and other financial institutions to provide more
financial services for users.
6.Innovate and diversify the service pattern. In order to compete with JingDong, Amazon, and other
shopping websites, Alibaba needs to bring forth new ideas to user service and optimize users
shopping experience in order to retain and attract customers. Apart from providing a better
shopping platform for consumers, Alibaba needs to improve interactions with consumers and build
an open social network.
7.Utilize the network resources more effectively. Although Alibaba provides a desirable platform
of B2B and allows businesses to trade directly, it can be difficult for businesses to market new
products on a B2B platform. In order to make information flow more smoothly between businesses
and customers, Alibaba can cooperate with other shopping websites, such as JingDong and Amazon

Clemens Argumentative Essay On Huckleberry Finn
Samuel Langhorne Clemens died peacefully on April 21, 1910, in the presence of his daughter
Clara. Throughout Clemens life, he used the impacts made by his hometown Hannibal along with
other life experiences, to shape his characteristics and influence his writing. Although Clemens
suffered tragic events in his life, he kept pushing to continue doing the things he loved. Writing
being one of the things he loved to do. Clemens wrote about what he believed in without the
thought of critics downgrading his writings. He wrote about his beliefs pertaining slavery and
women s rights. Two controversial topics that caused many arguments back in his time. To support
his disliking of slavery, Clemens wrote a book by the name The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Clemens showed his belief that slavery was disturbing by stating that he was ashamed of his
own race. Although he had negative views on slavery, he supported the movement to push for
women s rights. By doing so, Clemens put himself in a place where critics could judge him
harshly and use his beliefs against him. However, being such a strong believer in his opinions,
he had no opposition to publicizing his beliefs to judge. Clemens even spoke out about his
demeanor when he said, I suppose a honest man shines more in politics than he does anywhere.
Clemens also presented as a family man in his lifetime. He would often times spend time in his

tragedy and death. At times Clemens relationship with his family may have created tension, but as

Comparing Cupid And Psyche
The Story of Cupid and Psyche first appeared in the book Metamorphoses by Apuleius, written
between 124 170 AD. The story deals with many themes prevalent in tales from classical antiquity,
including love, challenging trials, and interference from the gods. It tells the tale of a love story
between a mortal woman and a god. Psyche is the youngest daughter of an unnamed king and
queen, renowned for her beauty, while Cupid(also known as Eros in Roman mythology) is the son
of the goddess Venus, and a minor god of love. Of the two, Cupid is more recognisable in
modern times, often found with his classic attributes of small feathered wings and a bow and
arrow. In the Renaissance, however, the two lovers are often found together in art, and their story
was particularly popular for its allegorical associations. Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio drew
parallels between Psyche and Cupid s marriage at the end of the story and union of the human soul
and God (Most, 2010, p.56). Furthermore, Psyche s name is derived from the Greek word for soul .
In her union with Cupid, Psyche transitions from mortality, to one of the immortal divine, much
like how many followers of Christianity in the Renaissance particularly in Italybelieved that if their
souls would live for eternity with God in Paradise. Moreover, Hall discusses Apuleiustale as an
allegory for the union between the Soul and Desire (Eros), with the creation of Pleasure (their
child) as a result (1974, pg.88) In the

1 Corinthians 4
Castelli articulates significant questions for how to understand Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:14 21.
While certain commentators dismiss her critiques as strictly modern and without valid basis, she
does highlight a reading of this passage which is textually valid particularly with how mimesis
functioned in the broader Greco Roman culture. Moreover, despite what Paul s intention was it
does not change the fact that he is often used to reinforce social hierarchy and squash dissent.
Castelli provides a valuable counter balance to those usages. However, it is the centrality of the
cross underlying Paul s teaching in 1 Corinthians 4 which can liberate readers from Castelli s
critical interpretation. By focusing on the cross and the life of discipleship

Global Chocolate Shortage Essay
Global chocolate shortages coming, what will need to be done about alternatives and economic
effects?
The situation of global chocolate always causes wide attention since 2007. As could be seen in
figure 1 and 2, it seems that the situation of chocolate shortages is a recent problem. The peak of
this trend showed in November 2014. According to Walters (2015, p.4), chocolate shortage is
happened all over the world. It is believed that this situation might get worse by chocolate
makers. It was predicted that the deficit of chocolate could attain more than a million tons in
2020. The shortages of global chocolate could causes lager effects in many fields such as social,
economic and food industrial field because chocolate is a very popular food or raw material. In
this report, some results would be enumerated and compared by the empirical evidences to discuss
what would need to be done for facing global chocolate shortages. The discussion consisted by
factors of reasons, the economic effects and some alternatives of chocolate.
Firstly, the major reasons of global chocolate shortages are cocoa shortages and over consumption.
It has a close relationship between them that cocoa bean is a basis of chocolate. Climate changes and
pestilence in Africa which is a chief producer, was culprit. It needs about two to five years to get
new cacao tress to produce new cocoa beans. It even needs to take 10 years to reveal traits worth
preserving (Harris 2014). Walters (2015, p.4) also holds

Cultural Conflict In The Namesake By Jhumpa Lahiri
Have you ever felt a cultural conflict within yourself? The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is a
novel about a character named Gogol who struggles with living an American lifestyle, while also
sticking to his Bengali heritage. Through the people around him and his very own name, Gogol
has an inner conflict between his Bengali side, and his American side. Gogol responds to this by
neglecting his Bengali side and being more American. The people Gogol met while growing up
in America caused the most wars in which he left his own customs, to be more like everybody
else. For example, when Gogol moves in with Maxine and her parents, he learns a lot of
differences from Maxine s family and his own. One significant difference is the way each family
throws gatherings. Gogol says to himself He has fallen the tiniest bit in love with Lydia and with
the understated, unflustered way she entertains. He is always struck by these dinners: only a
dozen or so guests sitting around the candlelit table, a carefully selected mix of painters, editors,
academics, gallery owners, eating the meal course by course, talking intelligently until the evening
s end. How different they are from his own parents parties, cheerfully unruly evenings to which
there were never fewer than thirty people invited, small children in tow. Fish and meat served side
by side, so many courses that people had to eat in shifts, the food still in the pans they were cooked
in crowding the table. They sat where they could, in the

Essay about Black Holes
If theories of their existence are true, black holes are the most powerful force in the known
physical universe. Many people are familiar with the term black hole, but few people actually
know anything about them. A black hole forms as a result of a massive star running out of fuel to
burn (Chaisson, 193). Once the star is no longer exerting outward force by burning off gases, it
begins to collapse under it s own intense, inward gravity(Chaisson, 193). It is like slowly letting
the air out of a balloon. Once the star is compacted to a certain size, while it s mass, or weight,
remains the same, it s gravity becomes so powerful that nothing can escape it (Hawking, 87). This
critical size to weight ratio is known as the Schwarzchild
Radius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The simple formula for this, in physics, states that a body s escape velocity is equal to the square
root of it s mass, divided by it s radius
(Chaisson, 77). For example, if a body s mass is two hundred, and it s size is twelve and one half,
the escape velocity would be four. If the size of the same body is reduced to two, while it s mass
remained at two hundred, the escape velocity increases to ten. Since a black hole s size is always
decreasing and it s weight is always the same, the escape velocity is infinite (Chaisson,
195). This means that nothing can escape a black hole past the event horizon, not even light. Light
is made up of waves and particles. It was discovered, in 1676, by Danish astronomer, Ole
Christenson, that light travels at a very high, but finite speed (Hawking, 18). These properties of
light govern that it must be subject to forces of nature, such as gravity. Light travels at such a
high speed that it is not observably effected by gravity, unless that gravity is very strong. A black
hole s gravity is powerful enough to trap light because it s escape velocity, being infinite, exceeds
the speed of light (Hawking, 82). This is why a black hole is black. Once light crosses the event
horizon it is drawn into the hole in space. Although the light is still hitting objects, it is not able to
bounce off to indicate their existence to an observer,

Literary Analysis Of Reginald Gibbons s Wood
Chopping wood, it seems like a task that is unnecessary in the modern world. Have you ever
chopped wood? Have you ever held an axe in your hands and then with all your might, hammer
down on a piece of wood with the hopes it will split right in half? Imagine a three foot axe in
hand and your only task is to split the maple log in front of you. All around you are trees and the
other logs and pieces of wood you have gathered to either process or store for later use as fuel,
but how much is enough fuel? Reginald Gibbons uses graphic imagery, and imaginative
metaphors in his poem, Wood , to illustrate the difficult task of chopping wood through a not
very obvious first person perspective, but upon further inspection, the poem uses imagery to
establish the setting and also explores the different thoughts the unnamed character has. Right
away, I noticed the large amount of imagery that was used in this poem A cylinder of maple / set
in place, feet spread apart / and the heavy maul, fat as a hammer ( Wood 1 3). The first paragraph
gives an accurate depiction of the action and visuals of what it is like to be outside on a cold day
to split wood. Gibbons uses a heavy amount of imagery, mainly sight, in this poem. Each stanzahas
some form of imagery within it. The choice of words and stylehe decided to use puts a very
weighty and, at one point, even put a darker mood over the poem. Right away, he describes the
process of splitting wood; this sets up the setting

technology to teach science concepts impacted student s motivation for learning science in the

The Media Representation Of The Collective Action By...
Statement of Purpose It is essential in an increasingly globalised world, to have a deep
understanding of nation states, political and economic institutions that govern, and the cultural
backgrounds and values of its citizens. My interest in sociology has thus far entailed studying of
the indigenous communities of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Bangladesh. For my MA thesis, I
propose to study the media representation of the collective action by the Indigenous nationalism
against the backdrop of Bengali nationalism in CHT. My Master of Social Science (M.S.S) degree
in sociology has developed my skills in interpretation and analysis as well as in constructing
reasoned arguments. I have gathered experience as a social activist and journalist and have also
worked with several Swedish teacher groups in Rural Bangladesh Study Projects. Those projects
focused on cultures, value systems, economic structure, religion, political participation,
organizational attachment, etc.Apart from improving my sense of freedom and work ethic, this has
given me numerous valuable experiences dealing with different type of people and communities. As
I believe in citizen rights, I am immensely interested in community backgrounds, their political
history, cultural diversities and interactions towards others. I have keenly observed community
problems and various forms of collective actions like political movements as well as armed

The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells Essay
The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells
In the novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, William Dean Howells makes a particular point about
the morals of an individual in the business world. His point is that an individual, such as Silas,
must check their morals at the door if they have any plans to make it in the business world. The
novel has always been popular, partly because it presents Lapham s financial and social failure as
consciously and deliberately chosen when he has to decide whether he shall cheat and stay on top
in business or tell the truth and fail irrecoverably (Gibson 283). The Rise of Silas Lapham is a novel
that deals with the potential moral corruption of a man by money. The outward signs of Silas

Obviously the pressures of big business would be much tougher to deal with in a big city, like
Boston, than in a small rural farm town, because the competition to be the best is much greater
in the urban areas. The time period in which the story is set, the late 1800 s, is also a crucial part
of the puzzle. All throughout the early 1800 s up until the present, big business has been on the
rise. When large companies started setting up in cities, people moved to where the jobs were,
and soon small towns became gigantic urban metropolises. The big business is what ultimately
causes Silas moral rise and financial fall, and that is a crucial part of the plot. If the story where
set in a different time period it would not have as big an impact. Also during the late 1800 s,
social standing was very important. In those days a person was measured by their social
standing, so it meant everything. The reason this is important is because, interwoven in the main
plot is a secondary plot. This secondary plot has to do with the love triangle between Penelope
Lapham, Irene Lapham, and Tom Corey. Everyone seems to think that Tom and Irene are in love
with each other, while in actuality it is Tom and Penelope that are in love. This secondary plot

Low Income And Lower Class Families Struggle With...
Education today is a very important need for a successful, prosperous, and respectable life.
Almost every job a person seeks to find in the work force requires a degree of some form. More
and more every day, people are needing a good education to make enough of a living to survive.
Low income and lower class families struggle with providing their children with necessary
educational needs. They do not have the funds to provide educational needs to help them excel
in their adulthood. Most of the lower class society is brought up in rundown neighborhoods,
which means they do not have the means to attend an upper class school. In a lower class
education setting, more often than not, you find that the teachers are failing because the system
is failing. The higher class institutions teach a more in depth curriculum, while the lower class
institutions teach a more practical curriculum. The families in these lower class societies make
barely enough to live, causing them to put their children s education at the low end of priorities.
It can be hard for a lower class person to get an education because of all of the hardships that
come along with it, but some prevail through all of that hardship and come out on top. The
educational system can easily be defined by our social rankings; such a ranking can cause many to
receive incomplete learnings, and allow them to fall through the cracks of society. Many teachers in
the lower class spectrum of society aren t giving the necessary

Abraham Lincoln Peoria Speech Summary
Abraham Lincoln was a great president that helped change the course of the united states. Some
people at the time would say for the better other for worse. With that people would call a him a
racist, someone who thinks that their own race is superior to another race. Or people would call
him an emancipator, someone who sets free from legal, political, or social restrictions. Lincoln
was not a racist, he was an emancipator for he freed the slaves. In his Peoria Speech, lincoln
express his disapproval of the Kansas Nebraska Act and how it ignored the issue with slavery.
He even says that his first impulse is to free the slaves, and called slavery an injustice and a
betrayal to the republican example. He then goes on to say that if blacks are people that they
deserve equality due to the Declaration of Independence. Along with that he say that it is not
possible to be morally right and enslave another man. With all this that Lincoln thought better of the

opportunity and should take it. The place he has planned for them is down in Central America

had changed their ways of thinking. An example of this from the play was when Bradshaw was
trying to convince Sally Bowles to leave Germany with him because of the Nazi Party. On the
other hand, Sally Bowles was supposed to represent all of the individuals who did not want to
see the changes in the world and those who wanted to be oblivious to what was happening. This
is also depicted in the same scenario because Sally had no desire to leave Germany even though
some of her fiends were being targeted by the Nazis. The play does not focus much on the Nazi
Party, however when the Party was mentioned it because prevalent that the country was accepting
to the beliefs of Hitler. This is shown when Ernst Ludwig starts to bring in money for the Party.
Ernst Ludwig also recruits Cliff Bradshaw to help the Nazi Party, however when Bradshaw figures
out what he is doing, he quits. When Bradshaw quit helping the Nazi Party, he showed how the
Americans felt about the objectives of the Nazi Party.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Herr Schultz and Fräulein Schneider show how the religion should not play a part in love.
Fräulein Schneider and Herr Schultz host an engagement party, which ends up causing more
trouble. In the end, Fräulein Schneider decides to leave Herr Schultz because he was Jewish
but it was obvious that she loved him. Later in the play Bradshaw gets beaten up by Ernest
because he will not do another job for the Nazi Party and because he was associating with a Jew.
This connects to the Christian faith because God commands that all individuals love their neighbor
like themselves. This applies to all individuals of all faiths. Many times during the play, race and

Red Harvest By Dashiell Hammett
The first novel we read for this course was a detective novel titled Red Harvest by Dashiell
Hammett. Personally this has been my favorite detective novel that we have read so far. But when
reading Red Harvest some may question, what makes it a true detective story? After doing some
investigating I have found the ultimate guide to what makes detective novels, true detective
novels. In order to relate these characteristics to the novel I first need to identify what some of the
characteristics are: The novel must have at most one detective and one criminal, and at least one
victim (a corpse) , Love has no place in detective fiction, and lastly There is no place for
descriptions nor for psychological analyses (Todorov). First, in the... Show more content on

We saw romance, lots of details, and also the three main character components of the novel as
well. After reading Red Harvest and then reading the essay The Typology of Detective Fiction I
was able to make connections between these two works. Also, by reading both of these I was
able to gain more knowledge regarding detective fiction and what it really is as well. I never knew
that each detective fiction novel included the same parts or components but now that I know that I
have been able to make several relations or connections between novels due to

Environmental Pollution In California Essay
Environmental Pollution Recommendation on California For the past few years, the American
Lung Association has been releasing its annual reports on the State of The Air that lists the most
polluted cities in the United States. For instance, in 2014, out of the seven cities ranked to have
the worst air quality, six of them are in California. The two major air pollution culprits in
California are from the transportation sources such as trucks and cars, or from the stationary
sources such as industrial facilities and refineries (Ierodiakonou, et al. 392). However, the
California Air Pollution Control Officers Association includes other pollutants in their reports such
as Sulphur(IV) oxide, Carbon(II) Oxide gas and Nitrogen(IV) Oxide from chemical industries,
which also causes harm to human beings and the environment at large. Apparently, Ozone is a lung
searing gas, which brings irritations in the airways causing respiratory problems (Kim, et al. 137).
In California, both ozone and particulate matters have increased the heart and respiratory diseases
such as asthma, lung diseases, bronchitis and heart problems for both children and adults.
Nevertheless, some of this other harmful gas such as Carbon(II) Oxide, Nitrogen(IV) Oxide, and
Sulphur(IV) oxide has also brought about cardiovascular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first significant step is to clean up the diesel truck fleet to reduce the level of particulate
matters. Another solution is replacing the fossil fueled vehicles with zero emission freight
movement system like the electric trucks. Finally, install efficient sources of energy in our
industries to reduce the emission of harmful gases in the air. For these strategies to be effective, the
government through the environment regulating bodies should play a part in implementing these
plans to prevent pollution and also introduce stern punishments to those who are responsible for air

lunch included. The first stop is at Charles Krug Winery, a St. Helena AVA, that is one of the
oldest wineries in Napa Valley, founded in 1861 by the Russian immigrant, Charles Krug.
Charles Krug is noted as launching the cider press for winemaking, which is still on display at
his winery today. This AVA is covered by the Western Hills, with less wind, and a warm climate.
The summers get very hot ranging in the high 90 s, which results in more heat reflection from the
narrow valley floor. The elevation stands at 150 to 600 feet with the rainfall from 38 to 40 inches

Essay about Jimi Hendrix
On November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington a later to be known legend was born as James
Marshall. This future guitar master went by the name of Jimi, Jimi Hendrix. His childhood was
not very fortunate, however, he did indulge himself in one particular way: Jimi loved to play the
guitar. Jimi could never afford to take lessons so he taught himself. At first he played an old
acoustic guitar, and later a cheap Silvertone electric. Both of these guitarswere both strung for a
lefty on a right handed guitar, one of the defining Hendrixtraits. Jimi would have preferred to play
a guitar that was made for lefty s but his parents wouldn t pay the extra money because they were
extremely poor.

Another Hendrix tune from Are You Experienced? was ?Purple Haze.? Many people have the

the dream, Jimi was walking under the sea, surrounded by purple haze. He became lost and Jesus

as ?the band?s break through single in America? This song was the one that had really sparked
Hendrix s album sales. After Purple Haze, Hendrix was known as a rock star, and people demanded

Reflection Paper On Endometriosis
Endometriosis, if not diagnosed in time, could be a fatal disease that could lead to cancer.
January 2003, was the day I received the devastating news that would change my life forever. My
gynecologist informed me that I was eat up with Endometriosis and had no choice but to accept a
complete hysterectomy. No one knows my body like me, so I knew that something was amiss
when I was having menstrual cycles that just did not seem normal, not to mention the excruciating
pain that I received every month along with it. I have performed a great deal of research and along
with my personal story with Endometriosis, this is what I found. Living with The Effects of
Endometriosis In 2002, I met my husband and as time went on, we decided that we would do
whatever it took to have another baby. For most couples, it has been just a matter of the
conception part of it. It was not going to be that easy for us because I had already had my tubes
cut and burned so they said. However, we were not going to let that stop us. As time went on I
had started doing research on the process that we would have to go through to make this dream
come true. There were many trips back and forth to the doctor s office. Depo shots that cost
around $1800 and still, before we knew it, I was having laparoscopic surgery done to what we
thought would get rid of the Endometriosis.
We just knew that it would be all it would take to fix everything. Each time I had it done, it came
back worse than before. After 3 times, once a month, it was time to give up and get the bad
news. When the final test results came back from the last surgery, my doctor called to tell me
that I needed to go to her office so she could go over the results with me. I was scared, but yet,
excited. The news I got was forever life changing, she told me that at this point, my insides looked
like a spider had been inside of me and webbed all of my female organs together and she had done
all she knew to do and now it has come down to 2 choices, I could have a complete hysterectomy,
or die. On February 5th, 2003, I went in for surgery at the Moore Regional Medical Center. Not

A1. Budgetary Items Of Concern Within the budget for Competition Bikes, Inc., there are a few
different items of concern. Some items that raise a concern within the budget are the projected
number of unit sales and the amounts budgeted for advertising and research and development. I
think it is obvious in the previous years that the amount the company spends on advertising has a
direct effect on the number of sales. According to the projected number of units that are expected
to be sold, the company is expecting an increase from 3,400 in year 8 to 3510 in year 9. This is a
considerable increase because of the fact that in year 7, there were 4,000 units sold, and in year 8

This is due to the fact that actual unit sales were projected to be 3510 units, while actual sales
were only 3423. While this is an unfavorable variance within the flexible budget, in reality, it is a
positive thing because there was an improvement in sales from the prior year. The next four
variances were favorable ones for the company. Direct materials, direct labor, manufacturing
overhead, and variable selling expenses all had favorable variances. This is to be expected as
the company sold fewer units than they had projected for. Competition should be spending less
on variable expenses when they are producing less than expected. Overall, variable expenses as a
whole saw a favorable variance by spending $ 88,989 less than expected. This is despite the fact
that the variances within the advertising and transportation out categories were unfavorable. All of
these variables accounted for show an unfavorable contribution margin variance of$ 41,076. This is
due to the money lost in the unit sales and the few unfavorable variances. Overall, fixed general
and administrative expenses experienced a favorable variance of $2,597. This is mainly due to
favorable variances in the executive compensation, employment taxes, utilities and services,
research and development, and other utilities and services expenses. In the end, Operating income
had an unfavorable variance of $38,478. This is important to note because this number was

William Henry Gates III
During that late 1960 s and early 1970 s, BASIC was one of the premier programming languages.
At that time, Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen made the commitment to learn BASIC by reading
the user manuals. In exchange for computer time, they made an agreement with a local company
called the Computer Center Corporation to provide de bugging services for software on the
company s DEC machine. This time was used not only to search for errors, but also to study the

After seeing the magazine article, Gates contacted Ed Roberts of the MITS Company and
proposed to that he write some BASIC software for the Altair. The MITS personnel were
impressed with the initial work that Gates and his friends had completed and decided to meet with
them to test the team s code. After a successful demonstration of the code, Gates made the decision
to leave school and move to Albuquerque and work with MITS on the Altair.
After the move Gates would devote his energies to Microsoft, a company that he would establish in
1975 with Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office
desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Microsoft
would sell its BASIC system to MITS, NCR and Intel. It proved to be more cost effective for
companies to buy Microsoft software rather than spend the time and money to develop their own.
In January of 1979, Gates made the decision to move Microsoft to Seattle, Washington. Gates
believed that part of the country was better suited for recruiting programmers. Microsoft adopted a
new standard for hiring employees; the company decided to hire only the most gifted and
intelligent new college graduates rather than experienced programmers. The company was looking
for talent that came with no previous programming biases. The expansions of personnel would lead

A Dystopian Society In Pakistan
Imagine, there is a girl and she is stripped from her right to have an education, or there is a women
that is castigated for doing something without a man; this is the life Pakistani women and girls
face. Pakistan has over the years created a dystopian society for many different reasons. When
deciphering how Pakistanand the Talibanmake decisions that create a dystopian society among their
citizens, one can observe what the leaders of Pakistan did that made the society become dystopian,
they can assess what impact these decisions had on Pakistani people and other nations, and one
could analyze the way authors delineate dystopiain novels.
When evaluating people and government s actions that create dystopian society in Pakistan, one
can see the people who suppressed women and examples of the unequal rights and the reasons
behind it. In Pakistan, women cannot even walk outside without a male escort. These broad
divisions have an umbrella of male chauvinism and defined social roles where women are not
perceived as individuals but as mothers, wives, daughters and sisters (Mustafa). These women are
being stigmatized, and they seem to have no value as humans. Women are put into unpleasurable,
tedious places of work, and are yelled orders. What is even more preposterous is after these long,

Fema And The Federal Emergency Management Agency
On April 1, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the executive order that created the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. 1.Year in and out, a disaster can strike at any moment and
put millions of people in danger and wreck billions of dollars worth of property. But, this is
where the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) steps in and up to the plate.
FEMA works as part of a team helping communities reduce their risk, helping emergency officials
prepare for all hazards, and helping people get back on their feet after their lives are disrupted by
a disaster. 2 FEMA s primary focus is to coordinate federal and logistical operations to save and
sustain lives, minimize suffering, and protect property in a timely and effective manner in
communities that become devastated by disasters. 3
Background
For 35 years, FEMA s mission remains: to lead America to prepare for, prevent, respond to and
recover from disasters with a vision of A Nation Prepared. FEMA can trace its origins to the
Congressional Act of 1803. FEMA coordinates the federal government s role in preparing for,
preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters,
whether natural or man made, including acts of terror. 4 President Carter s 1979 executive order
12127 merged many of the separate disaster related responsibilities into the Federal Emergency
Management Agency. 51 From this executive order, FEMA absorbed The Federal Insurance

Agricultural Biotechnology Essay
Agricultural Biotechnology Due to the greater understanding of DNA, the field of Agricultural
Biotechnology has developed rapidly over the last 30 years. Agricultural Biotechnology is a set
of tools to modify products, improve plants and animals, and make microorganism for
agricultural uses. It s being used to produce products cheaper and easy to maintain. More and
more farmers and producers used genetic engineered crops because of the price and resistances to
insects and diseases. The main aim is to meet human and environmental needs. Biotechnology is a
set of tools that uses living organisms to produce or modify a product, improve plants or animals,
or develop microorganisms for specific uses. The latest set of tool some say greatest is genetic
engineering. It allows the transfer of useful characteristics into a plant, animal, or microorganism by
inserting genes from another organism. Genetic engineering which uses molecular markers to
select plants or animals that give a desirable gene, allows segments of DNAthat code genes for a
specific trait to be recombined into a new. Desirable traits producers choose is short growing
seasons, increased resistance to diseases and pests, larger seeds and fruits, nutrition, and better
adaption to environmental conditions. An example is the International Institute of Tropical
Agricultural has used molecular markers to obtain cowpea resistance to bruchid (a beetle). That s
one type of genetic modification.

What Does a Neurologist Do?

We all have experienced pain at some point in our lives. Most of the time, an aspirin will help
alleviate mild muscle aches and pains, and normally it takes care of the occasional headache.

This profession requires a considerable understanding of physiology and anatomy along with other
body systems such as the digestive and endocrine systems, respiratory, and the cardiovascular
system. All this in depth knowledge is needed because anything affecting these systems could have
a direct impact on brain function and lead to neurological disease.
A neurologist starts an evaluation of a patient with a neurological exam, assessing basic brain
functionality, and evaluates each of the patient s peripheral nerve groups. This investigation yields
a better understanding about the location of problems in the patient s central nervous system.
Thanks to modern day health care advances, and new technology, these neurologists no longer have
to rely on just their talents when identifying the cause and location of affected regions based solely
on clinical examinations.
So what does a neurologist do? They may encounter patients who suffer a severe speech
impairment, or seizures, some may even have lost their ability to move their limbs. These medical
experts have the ability to cope with the stress that their patients are experiencing, while remaining
emotionally stable. The ability to recognize small symptoms and details enable neurologists to treat
disease in it s early stages, and perhaps even save the patients

International Student And High Tuition Essay
Studying with those from another background other than our own provides opportunities for
greater discovery, understanding, and cooperation. International students bring a variety of ideas
and new perspectives to the classroom, aiding in the educational process for all and are an
important component to many universities campus climate. Beyond the important cultural
components they bring to campus, International students are also a source of high tuition revenue
for universities. Students are often charged multiple times the rate of tuition that in state domestic
students pay, such as the Universityof Washington, where international students pay almost three
times as much per year (Lewin, 2012). The retention and graduation rates of all students are
important to universities; however, research on international studentpersistence has largely been
missing in the literature (Andrade 2009; Andrade and Evans 2009). Interestingly enough, the
Institute of International Education (IIE) and other government agencies do not report data on
international studentpersistence rates (Evans et al, 2009). The majority of universities report their
student graduation and retention rates on their websites, with many universities including their
percentages by ethnic groups; however, very few universities identify the specific rates for the
international student population. According to the IIE, the international student population in the
United States comprises only about 3.5% of the total

The Destructive Nature of Industrialization Depicted in...
In Herman Melville s short stories, The Paradise of Bachelors and The Tartarus of Maids, he
juxtaposes the lives of social classes to illustrate the destructive nature of industrialization. Melville
demonstrates the separation of classes by his usage of allusions and metaphors. Segregation is a
main concern of Melville s and, the contrast amid the two stories is a representation of the disparity
between classes present at that time.
While it may seem that the bachelors live the ideal life with all of their luxuries, the bachelors

In reality, the motivation for acquiring control was greed. Melville alludes to the templars of the
crusades to exemplify the self righteous characteristics of the upper class. The thing called pain, the
bugbear styled trouble those two legends seemed preposterous to their bachelor imaginations
(Melville 673). The bachelors live in a world above pain. Without pain one cannot relate to others
and, as a result the bachelors cannot understand their unfortunate counterparts, the maids. Since the
bachelors are not able to relate to anyone other than themselves, they are incapable of partaking in
any significant relationships. As a result the bachelors throw their extravagantly superficial parties
in which they tell impersonal stories and gorge on fine food. Melville sarcastically states their
care for one another when the narrator says, The nine bachelors seemed to have the most tender
concern for each other s health. All the time, in flowing wine, they most earnestly expressed their
sincerest wishes for the entire well being and lasting hygiene of the gentlemen on the right and on
the left (Melville 672). Melville is saying that the class that rules society lives an unfulfilling life.
The business owners do not care or respect their own people enough to take their needs into
consideration. The upper class cannot be content because they have not treated the working class
justly.
In the story, there is a recurrent idea of pain and subjugation. The narrator begins

The problem is, much like in the case of our Holden Caulfield, that these people may not receive the proper care and attention required to avoid slipping deeper. That is why millions of people, teenagers and adults alike, suffer from depression of many different types and severities. This story provides only a glimpse into what goes on inside the mind of a growing teenager suffering from the disorder. At the time of release, the 1950s, it is reported that depression was considered a rarity, and a taboo one at that. Mental illnesses were not treated nearly as well back then as they are today. In the 50s, Holden s only solution would be to see a psychoanalyst, which readers do see at the very end of the story. However today, with depression and suicide at an all time high, Holden would be treated much differently. In the modern world of medicine and psychological support, Holden would be most likely been able to be treated with antidepressant medication like Lexapro or Zoloft, pills that would slowly help his mental state be ... • 10. Comparing Cupid And Psyche The Story of Cupid and Psyche first appeared in the book Metamorphoses by Apuleius, written between 124 170 AD. The story deals with many themes prevalent in tales from classical antiquity, including love, challenging trials, and interference from the gods. It tells the tale of a love story between a mortal woman and a god. Psyche is the youngest daughter of an unnamed king and queen, renowned for her beauty, while Cupid(also known as Eros in Roman mythology) is the son of the goddess Venus, and a minor god of love. Of the two, Cupid is more recognisable in modern times, often found with his classic attributes of small feathered wings and a bow and arrow. In the Renaissance, however, the two lovers are often found together in art, and their story was particularly popular for its allegorical associations. Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio drew parallels between Psyche and Cupid s marriage at the end of the story and union of the human soul and God (Most, 2010, p.56). Furthermore, Psyche s name is derived from the Greek word for soul . In her union with Cupid, Psyche transitions from mortality, to one of the immortal divine, much like how many followers of Christianity in the Renaissance particularly in Italybelieved that if their souls would live for eternity with God in Paradise. Moreover, Hall discusses Apuleiustale as an allegory for the union between the Soul and Desire (Eros), with the creation of Pleasure (their child) as a result (1974, pg.88) In the ... While certain commentators dismiss her critiques as strictly modern and without valid basis, she does highlight a reading of this passage which is textually valid particularly with how mimesis functioned in the broader Greco Roman culture. Moreover, despite what Paul s intention was it does not change the fact that he is often used to reinforce social hierarchy and squash dissent. Castelli provides a valuable counter balance to those usages. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is a novel about a character named Gogol who struggles with living an American lifestyle, while also sticking to his Bengali heritage. Through the people around him and his very own name, Gogol has an inner conflict between his Bengali side, and his American side. Gogol responds to this by neglecting his Bengali side and being more American. The people Gogol met while growing up in America caused the most wars in which he left his own customs, to be more like everybody else. For example, when Gogol moves in with Maxine and her parents, he learns a lot of differences from Maxine s family and his own. One significant difference is the way each family throws gatherings. Gogol says to himself He has fallen the tiniest bit in love with Lydia and with the understated, unflustered way she entertains. He is always struck by these dinners: only a dozen or so guests sitting around the candlelit table, a carefully selected mix of painters, editors, academics, gallery owners, eating the meal course by course, talking intelligently until the evening s end. How different they are from his own parents parties, cheerfully unruly evenings to which there were never fewer than thirty people invited, small children in tow. • 15. Essay about Black Holes If theories of their existence are true, black holes are the most powerful force in the known physical universe. Many people are familiar with the term black hole, but few people actually know anything about them. A black hole forms as a result of a massive star running out of fuel to burn (Chaisson, 193). Once the star is no longer exerting outward force by burning off gases, it begins to collapse under it s own intense, inward gravity(Chaisson, 193). It is like slowly letting the air out of a balloon. Once the star is compacted to a certain size, while it s mass, or weight, remains the same, it s gravity becomes so powerful that nothing can escape it (Hawking, 87). This critical size to weight ratio is known as the Schwarzchild Radius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The simple formula for this, in physics, states that a body s escape velocity is equal to the square root of it s mass, divided by it s radius (Chaisson, 77). For example, if a body s mass is two hundred, and it s size is twelve and one half, the escape velocity would be four. If the size of the same body is reduced to two, while it s mass remained at two hundred, the escape velocity increases to ten. Since a black hole s size is always decreasing and it s weight is always the same, the escape velocity is infinite (Chaisson, 195). This means that nothing can escape a black hole past the event horizon, not even light. Light is made up of waves and particles. It was discovered, in 1676, by Danish astronomer, Ole Christenson, that light travels at a very high, but finite speed (Hawking, 18). These properties of light govern that it must be subject to forces of nature, such as gravity. Light travels at such a high speed that it is not observably effected by gravity, unless that gravity is very strong. A black hole s gravity is powerful enough to trap light because it s escape velocity, being infinite, exceeds the speed of light (Hawking, 82). This is why a black hole is black. Once light crosses the event horizon it is drawn into the hole in space. Although the light is still hitting objects, it is not able to bounce off to indicate their existence to an observer, ... • 16. Literary Analysis Of Reginald Gibbons s Wood Chopping wood, it seems like a task that is unnecessary in the modern world. Have you ever chopped wood? Have you ever held an axe in your hands and then with all your might, hammer down on a piece of wood with the hopes it will split right in half? Imagine a three foot axe in hand and your only task is to split the maple log in front of you. All around you are trees and the other logs and pieces of wood you have gathered to either process or store for later use as fuel, but how much is enough fuel? Reginald Gibbons uses graphic imagery, and imaginative metaphors in his poem, Wood , to illustrate the difficult task of chopping wood through a not very obvious first person perspective, but upon further inspection, the poem uses imagery to establish the setting and also explores the different thoughts the unnamed character has. Right away, I noticed the large amount of imagery that was used in this poem A cylinder of maple / set in place, feet spread apart / and the heavy maul, fat as a hammer ( Wood 1 3). The first paragraph gives an accurate depiction of the action and visuals of what it is like to be outside on a cold day to split wood. Gibbons uses a heavy amount of imagery, mainly sight, in this poem. Each stanzahas some form of imagery within it. The novel has always been popular, partly because it presents Lapham s financial and social failure as consciously and deliberately chosen when he has to decide whether he shall cheat and stay on top in business or tell the truth and fail irrecoverably (Gibson 283). The time period in which the story is set, the late 1800 s, is also a crucial part of the puzzle. All throughout the early 1800 s up until the present, big business has been on the rise. When large companies started setting up in cities, people moved to where the jobs were, and soon small towns became gigantic urban metropolises. The big business is what ultimately causes Silas moral rise and financial fall, and that is a crucial part of the plot. Almost every job a person seeks to find in the work force requires a degree of some form. More and more every day, people are needing a good education to make enough of a living to survive. Low income and lower class families struggle with providing their children with necessary educational needs. They do not have the funds to provide educational needs to help them excel in their adulthood. Most of the lower class society is brought up in rundown neighborhoods, which means they do not have the means to attend an upper class school. In a lower class education setting, more often than not, you find that the teachers are failing because the system is failing. The higher class institutions teach a more in depth curriculum, while the lower class institutions teach a more practical curriculum. The families in these lower class societies make barely enough to live, causing them to put their children s education at the low end of priorities. It can be hard for a lower class person to get an education because of all of the hardships that come along with it, but some prevail through all of that hardship and come out on top. For instance, in 2014, out of the seven cities ranked to have the worst air quality, six of them are in California. The two major air pollution culprits in California are from the transportation sources such as trucks and cars, or from the stationary sources such as industrial facilities and refineries (Ierodiakonou, et al. 392). Anyone who thinks that Purple Haze is about drugs is entirely wrong. Purple Haze was written by Jimi shortly after a dream he had. In the dream, Jimi was walking under the sea, surrounded by purple haze. He became lost and Jesus saved him . The song was originally called ?Purple Haze Jesus saves.? Purple Haze was described as ?the band?s break through single in America? This song was the one that had really sparked Hendrix s album sales. • 31. Reflection Paper On Endometriosis Endometriosis, if not diagnosed in time, could be a fatal disease that could lead to cancer. January 2003, was the day I received the devastating news that would change my life forever. My gynecologist informed me that I was eat up with Endometriosis and had no choice but to accept a complete hysterectomy. No one knows my body like me, so I knew that something was amiss when I was having menstrual cycles that just did not seem normal, not to mention the excruciating pain that I received every month along with it. I have performed a great deal of research and along with my personal story with Endometriosis, this is what I found. Living with The Effects of Endometriosis In 2002, I met my husband and as time went on, we decided that we would do whatever it took to have another baby. For most couples, it has been just a matter of the conception part of it. It was not going to be that easy for us because I had already had my tubes cut and burned so they said. However, we were not going to let that stop us. As time went on I had started doing research on the process that we would have to go through to make this dream come true. There were many trips back and forth to the doctor s office. Depo shots that cost around $1800 and still, before we knew it, I was having laparoscopic surgery done to what we thought would get rid of the Endometriosis. We just knew that it would be all it would take to fix everything. Each time I had it done, it came back worse than before. After 3 times, once a month, it was time to give up and get the bad news. When the final test results came back from the last surgery, my doctor called to tell me that I needed to go to her office so she could go over the results with me. I was scared, but yet, excited. The news I got was forever life changing, she told me that at this point, my insides looked like a spider had been inside of me and webbed all of my female organs together and she had done all she knew to do and now it has come down to 2 choices, I could have a complete hysterectomy, or die. On February 5th, 2003, I went in for surgery at the Moore Regional Medical Center. Not thinking about the fact that it would send me into instant menopause, it was nothing but misery for ... After a successful demonstration of the code, Gates made the decision to leave school and move to Albuquerque and work with MITS on the Altair. Microsoft would sell its BASIC system to MITS, NCR and Intel. It proved to be more cost effective for companies to buy Microsoft software rather than spend the time and money to develop their own. In January of 1979, Gates made the decision to move Microsoft to Seattle, Washington. Gates believed that part of the country was better suited for recruiting programmers. A neurologist starts an evaluation of a patient with a neurological exam, assessing basic brain functionality, and evaluates each of the patient s peripheral nerve groups. This investigation yields a better understanding about the location of problems in the patient s central nervous system. Beyond the important cultural components they bring to campus, International students are also a source of high tuition revenue for universities. Students are often charged multiple times the rate of tuition that in state domestic students pay, such as the Universityof Washington, where international students pay almost three times as much per year (Lewin, 2012). The retention and graduation rates of all students are important to universities; however, research on international studentpersistence has largely been missing in the literature (Andrade 2009; Andrade and Evans 2009). Interestingly enough, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and other government agencies do not report data on international studentpersistence rates (Evans et al, 2009). The majority of universities report their student graduation and retention rates on their websites, with many universities including their percentages by ethnic groups; however, very few universities identify the specific rates for the international student population. The thing called pain, the bugbear styled trouble those two legends seemed preposterous to their bachelor imaginations (Melville 673). The bachelors live in a world above pain. Without pain one cannot relate to others and, as a result the bachelors cannot understand their unfortunate counterparts, the maids. Since the bachelors are not able to relate to anyone other than themselves, they are incapable of partaking in any significant relationships. As a result the bachelors throw their extravagantly superficial parties in which they tell impersonal stories and gorge on fine food. All the time, in flowing wine, they most earnestly expressed their sincerest wishes for the entire well being and lasting hygiene of the gentlemen on the right and on the left (Melville 672). Melville is saying that the class that rules society lives an unfulfilling life. The business owners do not care or respect their own people enough to take their needs into consideration.
