Great Depression 2008 Essay
History has shown us again, and again that when power is left unchecked it becomes corrupt and out
of control, that is the iron law of oligarchy. In the US we saw this happen recently in the 2008
economic meltdown. The banks and corporations should never have been aloud to become to big to
fail, and once they did grow to a point when they were there should have been more government
oversight to make sure things did not get out of hand. After the great depression laws were put in place
to try to prevent something like that from ever happening again, but we undid those restrictions and
ended up in a place eerily similar to somewhere we had been before. In this paper I will cover a brief
history of the great depression, and show how the situation in 2008 was all too similar. I will also
discuss and analyze the factors that brought us to the tipping point in our most recent economic scare.
And finally I will explain why the actions taken by the FED were necessary and kept us from an even

But depressions are different, they also come around every now and again but when they come they
have the capability of toppling giants. If a huge company with thousands of employees and ties to
other large companies goes down it can easily destroy the whole system and ruin the American
economy along with the economies of many other nations. It is clear that these companies failing can
cause immense damage to an economy but it is not clear what causes these companies to fail in the
first place. Back in the depression it was fear and oversight that caused the banks to fail and in 2008 it
was the same lack of oversight that allowed things to get so out of hand that the economy was on the
brink of total collapse. Luckily we learned from our mistakes in the past and the right steps were taken
to keep the economy on its

In a nutshell, manufactured goods make up the bulk of what Canada imports. Canada s top Asian
trading partner is China with an overall trade value of $84 billion.

imported goods.
In order for one to be able to purchase imported goods, the importer must have:

IBM
HISTORY
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) is an information technology company that uses
their expertise to provide customer solutions. The company operates primarily in a single industry
using several different segments that create value by offering a variety of solutions that include,
technologies, systems, products, services, software, and financing (10 K report). The company s major
operations compromise three hardware product segments. These segments are: technology, personal
systems, and enterprise systems. They also offer a global services segment, a software segment, a
global financing segment, and an enterprise investments segment (Ibid). IBM offers its products and

This means setting reasonable commitments, and not misrepresenting the capability of IBM products.
IBM is constantly re assessing and clarifying its business practices to meet with the rapid changes in
the industry. No set of guidelines should ever be considered the absolute last word under all
circumstances. The Chief Executive Officer and senior executives are responsible for setting standards
of business ethics and overseeing compliance with these standards. It is an individual employee s
responsibility to comply with these standards.
In 1999, IBM was ranked number one in business ethics according to Business Ethics Corporate
Social Responsibility Report. IBM dropped from its top position to number 5 in 2000. This was
largely due to its mishandling of the change from a defined benefit to a cash balance pension plan,
which drew widespread employee outrage. The switch cost some older employees as mush as 50
percent of their pension, while it saved the company an estimated $200 million. The company did
agree to offer more employees a choice of plan, but the unpopular move is still a blot upon IBM s
otherwise positive leadership in the area of employee relations. (Business Ethics Corporate Social
Responsibility Report)
The cash balance program is a type of pension in which companies can reduce their pension costs by
cutting future benefits to middle aged

The Word-Pregnancy Model Of The Logogen Model
Word recognition is the reader s ability to correctly identify words without needing contextual aid.
People tend to recognize words faster if they are more frequent (i.e. more common in their everyday
language), a psychological phenomenon known as the word frequency effect. An example of a high
frequency word is the , whereas promiscuous , for instance, is a low frequency word. Similarly, people
tend to be better at correctly recognizing letters within words compared to isolated letters and to
orthographically illegal strings (i.e. nonwords, such as SUT ). This is known as the word superiority
effect.
Many models attempt to explain the different phenomena that arose as a result of studying reading.
The logogen model (Morton, 1969) aims to explain the word frequency effect in terms of low or high
thresholds. Each logogen contains a number of characteristics about given words, such as meaning,
appearance and sound. A logogen will be activated by psychological stimuli or contextual information
that triggers the most characteristics. When the activation level rises above the threshold level, that
word is selected. As there is no comparison between logogens, more than one response can be
triggered by one stimulus. High frequency words (those most commonly used), have a lower
threshold, meaning that they require less perceptual power to recognize and decode from the mental
lexicon, than low frequency words. Once the threshold is fired, the meaning

Taxi Driver
From the movie Taxi Driver, it is shown that Travis passionately hates criminals. He refers to them as
scum and wants to get rid of them, to cleanse New York City of their filth . Throughout the movie you
see Travis hinting that the government and law enforcement are not doing anything to clean up the
criminal activity that are occurring on the streets. This is seen directly when Travis has a conversation
with Charles Palantine, a presidential candidate, about what bothers him the most about the United
States. Charles Palantine s question to Travis is vague that it could be about any problem that was
occurring in the United States. Yet, the only thing that bothered Travis was how filthy the city was.

There are events where similar actions are taken; however, one was seen as self defense and another
was seen as murder. Bernhard Goetz, is famously known as the Subway Vigilante because he shot four
young men that he claimed tried to mug him. Bernhard, explains that he felt threatened as the young
African American men surrounded him and asked him for five dollars. Through their body language
and and small exchange of words Bernhard removed him hidden gun and shot each teenager injuring 3
and leaving one paralyzed. From there Bernhard fled the scene and turned himself in eight days after
the incident. At the end of the trial he was found not guilt for all counts except for carrying an
unlicensed firearm, which he served eight months for. It was agreed that Bernhard was defending
himself from a potentially violent mugging, yet the question arises then if this was an act of self
defense why did he flee the scene and hid from the police for over a week. Additionally the teenagers
never laid a hand on Bernhard, but through the judgement of his peers it was justified for him to use
excessive force to defend himself. After the trial Bernhard was viewed as a celebrity and hero for
cleaning the streets, he was awarded deals to make films and appeared as guest to popular radio and
television shows

Children Should Start At An Early Age
Figure 1 These are my kids: Hezel, Angelia and Andrew
Babies are born every day creating a constant demand for advice about every aspects of childcare and
general parenting. Children are not born with a handbook , thus, deciding the appropriate way to raise
a child is complicated.
Being a parent is one of the most challenging task but very rewarding experience in life. I can say this
because I m a parent myself. I know what it takes to be a mother of 3 kid s ages: 7, 4 and 3 years old.
Providing their basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter are main responsibilities of a parent but
teaching them good manners and right conduct is very important as well. Discipline is a form of
teaching our children. When discipline is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In cases like these, people around us would judge us right away that we are not good parents and we
do not discipline our child.
How Can I Help My Child Learn Good Behaviour? There are lot of ways how to help our kids learn
good behaviour. All we need is to understand and consider them, that they are not perfect and often
makes mistakes just like we do. Here are some suggestions:
Offer Praise and Affection Regularly. For example, my son, Andrew who is two years old at that time
had drawn a squiggly lines and web like scribbles on our white wall. After coming home exhausted
from work, he met me at the door and very proud and happy to show his drawing. Instead of being
mad, I composed myself and said, Oh that is very nice, it is like a spider web, but next time draw or
write it in a paper as I had literally gave a paper and crayons to him.
Plan Transition. Doing one activity to the next makes child anxious, we need to talk to our child so
they knew what to expect. Give our child advance warning when transitioning into another activity.
Example) Two or more minutes playing with the blocks or dolls, then its time to clean up . In this way,
they prepare themselves for the change of routine and move on to another activity.
Avoid stressful situations. Common triggers may include hunger and sleepiness, and quick change of
venues. So, plan in advance and anticipate our child schedules. Don t take our child shopping and do

Diffusion And Diffusion Lab Report
For part one of the State Lab we prepared to build a model cell using a false membrane to test
diffusion which is the process by which the collisions between molecules cause them to separate out
for simple sugar which is glucose and starch. The first thing we did was create a cell and we did this
by first taking a dialysis tube and put it under warm tap water for a few minutes until it can gently be
pull out of the end. Then, when we get it open we seal on part of the the tube by folding it over and
with a piece of string. After, add ¼ glucose solution then add enough starch solution halfway through
the tube. After all of the solutions are then added lock the other end of the tube by tying it with another
pair of string. We then got a beaker and filled it up with water and added starch ... Show more content

The process that is occurring that we would see is osmosis is a special type of diffusion which is when
the molecules are moving from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water to have a
water balance. The first thing we did was put a piece of onion on a slide with tap water and then under
a microscope and analysis how the cell looks which was clear to see the cell wall as well as the cell
membrane and the cytoplasm. Then, we added the salt water solution on the onion and put it under the
microscope and let it sit for a few. By adding salt water it would make the water move out of the cell
because the surrounding area is hypertonic. After a few we check back with the onion and noticed that
the cell was shrinking and the cell membrane was becoming a curve and cytoplasm began to shrink,
therefore, we conclude that if a cell is placed in solution with different concentration it would either
shrink or swell it s all depending on the place where there is a low concentration that the water can
move

As a result, fellowship, prayer, Bible study, worship, and most importantly salvation in its purest form
can be discerned and acted upon correctly. In addition, a further understanding can be thus gained
regarding the person of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Finally, heresies and heretical groups or
beliefs can lead God s followers astray from the truth and create an improper understanding, and thus
relationship with God. Positions past and present have, and are, attempting to mislead Christians about
the Trinity. A skewed view of the Trinity can result in a view of God as either divinely apart from
creation or simply a better version of all the best attributes of humans. Some positions even take away
from the Divinity of Jesus Christ. All of these views severely diminish who God is and alters a proper
and true relationship and worship. It is a necessity that these errant views be exposed as a hindrance to
God in order not to mislead God s followers. Likewise a Biblically sound explanation of the Trinity is
needed. As a result, a true and pure knowledge of the concept of the Trinity is crucially needed to
understand God and be obedient to the Bible.
Theology of the Trinity
Judaism as well as its offshoot and formation into the Christian religion both place great emphasis on
the notion of their monotheistic God as revealed in the early scriptures. To them God has revealed
Himself as the one Lord of all. Evident in the first Commandment that was

Attachment Theory
Attachment Theory
The Attachment theory is focused on the relationships and bonds between people, particularly long
term relationships including those between a parent and child and between romantic partners.
Attachment is an emotional bond to another person. Psychologist John Bowlby (1969, 1988) was the
first attachment theorist, describing attachment as a lasting psychological connectedness between
human beings. Bowlby believed that the earliest bonds formed by children with their caregivers have a
tremendous impact that continues throughout life. He suggested attachment also serves to keep the
infant close to the mother, thus improving the child s chances of survival. The central theme of
attachment theory is that primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The infant produces innate social releaser behaviours such as crying and smiling that stimulate care
giving from adults. The determinant of attachment is not food but care and responsiveness. Bowlby
suggested that a child would initially form only one attachment and that the attachment figure acted as
a secure base for exploring the world. The attachment relationship acts as a prototype for all future
social relationships so disrupting it can have severe consequences. Although Bowlby did not rule out
the possibility of other attachment figures for a child, he did believe that there should be a primary
bond which was much more important than any other (usually the mother). Bowlby believes that this
attachment is different in kind (qualitatively different) from any subsequent attachments. Bowlby
argues that the relationship with the mother is somehow different altogether from other relationships.
Essentially, Bowlby suggested that the nature of monotropy (attachment conceptualized as being a
vital and close bond with just one attachment figure) meant that a failure to initiate, or a breakdown
of, the maternal attachment would lead to serious negative consequences, possibly including
affectionless psychopathy. He believes that the long term consequences of maternal deprivation might
include the following: delinquency, reduced intelligence, increased aggression, depression

The Revolt Of Mother By Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
The time period between the late 1800s and early 1900s was a ground for many crucial changes for
women and how they were viewed and treated. The right to their children, property, and earnings was
granted to them during this time period ( Women Suffrage in the Progressive Era American Memory
Timeline Classroom Presentation | Teacher Resources Library of Congress ). Many women, no matter
what their occupation might have been, supported this movement ( Women Suffrage in the Progressive
Era American Memory Timeline Classroom Presentation | Teacher Resources Library of Congress ).
Female Writers were extremely proactive when it came to clearly displaying the mistreatment that
women endured while society viewed it as right. One writer in particular, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman,
published a short story the displayed the injustice in the treatment. The Revolt of Mother clearly
displays the repression of women in a society much like the one we live in today, and the story leaves
the reader with an essential lesson of standing up for one s self. This piece of work is heavily
influenced by the oppression Freedom faced during her life time. In Freeman s story Mother is meant
to represent every woman, while Father represents every man. She uses them as a generalization of
how each gender views and treats each other. Mother is displayed in this work as a hard working loyal
person. She is viewed as a person who just wants the best for her family. Her husband, however, is

Zeitoun, By Dave Eggers
In the novel, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, is an immigrant of
Syria who stays in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and is arrested due to the suspicion of looting,
but really is arrested because of his race and how he looks. Zeitoun s faith and loyalty to his
community and home is tested through the many obstacles of Hurricane Katrina and including his
religion, racism, and his very own dignity. The author, Dave Eggers who is also the speaker in novel,
proves all examples of Zeitoun s challenges credibly in the text.
Quote 1: Zeitoun s grandmother had stayed put during countless storms in her home on Arwad Island,
and he planned to do the same. A home was worth fighting for. (Eggers, 70)
Eggers shows in this quote how Zeitoun refuses to leave his home of New Orleans with his family.
Eggers portrays that even though a house may seem replaceable, Zeitoun still chooses to not leave his
home like his family who did not leave their home land of Arwad Island. The author also shows the
symbolism of Zeitoun s refusal to leave is like his assimilation coming to America. The symbolism of
Zeitoun s refusal to leave also shows how dedicated he is to his new country of America and refuses to
give up when faced with discrimination. Eggers proves that Zeitoun continues fighting for his home in
the United States.

individual and falls within the first amendment in the constitution along with eight more! So how can
we legally ban smoking from a whole college campus? In the end, the individual is going to do what

Although, there is one place in particular where officials are attempting to get smoking banned, but

In order to end the civil acts of disobedience the British agreed to set all political prisoners free in
1931. This agreement was known as Gandhi Irwin pact; Lord Irwin was the viceroy of India at the
time (History, 2010).
Page 4 In 1939 World War II broke out in Europe. Britain proclaimed India s involvement in the war
without consulting the Indian people. This led to increased protest and volatility. In 1942 India
established a national army and proposed the Quit India Movement. This movement promised to lend
Indian military support to Britain in return for complete independence. If they refused this treaty the
Indian people promised civil disobedience. In 1947 India was granted its independence and became
self governing (Luscombe, 2012). On January 26, 1950 the Republic of India was proclaimed and it

resources stretched thin due to the fact that its land holding had increased in size. The war was also
expensive and drained the British coffers. In order to remedy this problem American colonist were

Pituitary Gland Disorders Case Study
Anterior pituitary gland disorders Pathophysiology
The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain in a protective pocket of the sphenoid bone. The
pituitary gland is about 1 cm in diameter and is divided into the anterior lobe and posterior lobe. The
anterior lobe is responsible for secreting major hormones that regulates most body functions. Their
secretion is regulated by hypothalamic releasing and inhibitory factors delivered via portal capillaries,
and by negative feedback inhibition of the cognate hormones produced by target endocrine glands
such as the thyroid and adrenal cortex (Lewis, 2011). Etiology

There are many kinds of inland marine policies that cover several kinds of loss exposures. The
insurance industry has recognized this diversity by dividing inland marine into two categories:

1. Filed policies are those for which the policy forms and rates are filed with the state insurance

policies are characterized by a relatively small number of potential insureds with different loss
exposures. A non filed policy may be substantially different among insurers. Many non filed policies

Saul And David
The relationship between David and Saul, portrayed from 1 Samuel 16 through 2 Samuel 12, is a
dynamic relationship. In the beginning, David submitted himself to Saul, serving him, protecting him
from evil spirits. David grew to love Saul deeply, and in turn, the two had a reciprocated respect.
However, as David grew in popularity after defeating Goliath, Saul became jealous of David. That
jealousy transformed into the fear of David, and that began Saul s pursuit for David s death. In the
end, Saul committed suicide, with feelings of resent over David. But David never lost his respect for
Saul, the man he believed to be Lord s anointed . The turning point of their relationship occurred in 1
Samuel 18, after David had defeated Goliath. After

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
All too often, people are judged based on their appearance, causing them to pretend to be someone
they truly are not. This is true in the instance of racism, which is a socially constructed idea
discriminating against people based on their skin color (Takaki). The people that are victims of this
discrimination will sometimes internalize their feelings when they are separated by a community.
Psychoanalytic theory is seen in a text depicting a character who is motivated by psychological desires
or conflicts. It will show how the human experience is defined by psychological struggle (Tyson). In
Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, the character Pecola Breedlove internalizes her discrimination due to
her skin color and her family reputation. By the end of the novel, she is shunned by the community,
and she has no choice but to be her own friend. Pecola is raped by her father, which causes her to
personify her doubts in an attempt to obtain compliments for her blue eyes, as she subconsciously
avoids rejection by her community.
According to the society in which she lives, when Pecola is raped by her father, the community treats
her as an outcast because she could have prevented her pregnancy. Claudia and Frieda overhear
women talking while they are selling seeds, and one of the women says, She carry some of the
blame... How come she didn t fight him [Cholly]? (Morrison 189). Her community believes that
Pecola is equally responsible for being raped, even though the same people admit

The Impact Of The Walkman
The first manufactured portable music player The Walkman. In July 1979, Sony brought music from
traditional speakers and household radios to a portable cassette tape player The Walkman. At that time,
music was not considered being personal or private but rather being shared among a group of people,
journalists doubted that anyone would want to buy a tape player without a record function just because
it was handy. However, the first batch completely sold out at the end of August and the demand of the
Walkman continued to rise dramatically afterwards, copious new models of the Walkman were
released, and by the time of 1995, the total number of productions of the Walkman had reached 150
million (Johnson, 2011). These results demonstrate that the Walkman was a gadget that earned the
love of many people and it successfully changed the attitude of people towards portable and personal

The Walkman was the first device that allowed the isolation of people with their surroundings, which
is a commonplace these days (Costello, 2009). Many subsequent ideas after the success of the

people focus most of their time on these gadgets and somehow become tied to them, these gadgets
formed a balloon around its user, detaching them from the real world. Pell (2010) stated that
headphones and portability of new products reduced people s interaction with each other and it
became harder for people to know each other in depth. Even in crowded environments, people seemed
to be in their own world, it was not surprising that there are criticisms on how the Walkman made
people anti social (Wagstaff, 2010). Therefore, the Walkman s greatest influence was not the product

Force Field Analysis
In creating a force field analysis, I first had to look at the presenting problem of what I plan to change
within my agency. For my field practice assignment, I am working in conjunction with my supervisor
(Assistant Director) and the Director of the program on implementing changes to the provider s
contract. There are many policies and procedures that are being violated on the provider s end of the
contract that are in turn causing violations with the Department of Health and A.C.D. (Agency for
Child Development). First I will give a brief history of the program and its presenting issues that we
face with the providers. In consultation with my supervisor and other caseworkers, it was a unanimous

Child care providers must re apply for their license every two years and then once they submit their
new license to the network, they then sign a new contract. What could cause the contract from not
being revised would be its disapproval from the Vice President of the child care division. In addition,
if the provider s contract were to stay the same there would be no progression or drive from the
providers to adhere to the guidelines that have changed within the Department of Health and the Child
Care Network. The Critical Actors of the change would be the Vice President, the Director and the
Assistant Director. The driving force of the Vice President would be that she is very much for a
change in the providers behavior and professional attitudes toward the parents and the caseworkers.
She would also like to establish a more business like attitude with the caseworkers, other network
staff, and the parents. Lastly, she is looking for the providers to learn more educational techniques
from the trainings and workshops that are offered for them through the network. The restraining forces
would be that she would not approve the contact because its trying to implement too much change at
one time. Another restraining factor would be that the providers would contact the UFT union (United
Federation of Teachers) because of the extra demands that are being asked of them without extra
monetary compensation. A final restraining force of why she wouldn t approve

Poverty In African America
The disproportionate rates of poverty among African americans has continued to be a persistent social
problem that the United States faces. The purpose of this article is to examine how poverty has been
approached in the media, specifically on the opinion pages of American newspaper. Poverty is often
explained in three different ways. The first explanation is blaming the person for ending up in poverty.
As people often associate poverty with a lack of responsibility and it has also been noted that poverty
is blamed on the poor when race is involved. As the media shows the poor are frequently the
minorities and the African Americans, even though most welfare recipients are white. The next
explanation is the culture of poverty theory. The founder of this theory has said even ... Show more

the Hellenistic world in which they grew that began with Alexander the Great. Next, their
characteristics and connections first with Judaism and later with Christianity will be more deeply
discussed. In the second part it will be shown that the mystery religions helped to clear the pathway
for the Christianization of the Greco Roman world by men such as Paul the Apostle. Finally, the

After learning these mysteria, members were considered reborn or born again. Christianity in fact
began along these lines of practice. Its most important ceremony, the Mass or Eucharist, in which the
body and blood of Christ were symbolically eaten in the forms of bread and wine, was forbidden to all
but a select few who had completed three levels of initiation. Most early Christians, whether of Jewish
or Gentile origin, would have been familiar the concept of mysteria. Throughout the Mediterranean
world, religious communities based on this idea of secret teachings thrived.
Another common element in the mystery religions was their tendency to worship the divine on what
we today would think of as a higher spiritual level than standard Greek and Roman religions did. The
idea of a spiritual world as separate from the material world, first promoted by Plato, was fully
adopted by the mystery religions and provided them with a basis for belief in life after death.
Conversely, ancient Greco Roman religion and Judaism contained nothing that addressed this new
concept of separate worlds. Traditional public worship in both Jewish and Gentile communities
generally emphasized the material world in its requests for good crops, healthy children and success in
business. Worship in a closed

Essay on Development of African American Studies
Development of African American Studies
Scholars have dedicated their time and attention to furthering the discipline of African American
Studies and can define the field with many different definitions. Through looking at the origins and
development in the study we can see how it became a legitimate academic field. As we study the
writings of the African American intellect, it will fully explain the importance of the discipline. Their
work will justify the study of cultural and historical experiences of Africans living in Africa or the
African Diaspora. When examining the scholar s arguments we can develop our own intellectually
informed rationalization of the field of African American Studies.

Book retailing is an industry where companies sell books and other reading media, including, audio
books, e books and e readers. Some bookstores sell other products including DVDs, stationery and

Over the five year period until 2015 6, there was an annual decline in revenue of 10.6% (ibisworld,
2016). Numerous challenges have beset the industry, such as, lower book prices, strong competition
from online retailers and a change in popularity from printed books to e books (ibisworld, 2016).
Other issues that have a significant effect on bookstores are parallel import restrictions (IBISWorld,
2016), and online retailers being advantaged by low freight charges and often no requirement to pay
(GST) Goods and Services Tax (ABC, 2016).
Encouraging Signs
However, there are encouraging signs according to Williams, (2015) who points to the icon of
bookstores Dymocks, which claims to have had its best ever sales year. Sydney book retailer Jon Page
noted an upward surge in sales in the final quarter leading up to Christmas, a period that accounts for
around 70% of annual sales (Han, 2015). According to the Nielsen book scan data, there were 55.4
million in sales of printed books in Australia last year, a 2.2% increase over the previous year, the first
sales increase since 2009. (Han, 2015).
Some of the downturns in printed book sales may be as a result of economic conditions which have
affected all retailers. According to Page, (n.d.) the global financial crisis has dramatically changed

Edward Taylor Prologue Poem Analysis
In Edward Taylor s Prologue he seeks to demonstrate the inferiority of man in respect to God s glory.
Taylor begins his piece by creating a metaphor in which his own subsidiarity to God is described in
terms of physical stature and uniqueness. He then purposefully includes phrases with erroneous meter
and imperfect rhymes to demonstrate that his inferiority extends to his abilities as a writer. Taylor
further attempts to establish his lack of authorial skills by including repetitious words, implying that
he lacks an extensive vocabulary. When combined these tactics serve to support the idea that Edward
Taylor has many shortcomings, both as a human and a poet, especially in comparison to the greatness
of God. Taylor begins demonstrating his meagerness by describing the vast inequity between physical
standing of God and man by employing a metaphor. In this metaphor, Taylor is but a mere Crumb of
Dust in comparison to the glory of God s creation (line 1). This contrast firstly demonstrates Taylor s
inadequacy when examined from a physical perspective; Taylor is but the smallest piece of dust, while
God s glory is, comparatively, almost endless in size and scope. God being larger than Edward Taylor
serves to suggest that God is thus innately superior to Taylor, as greater size implies superiority over
those with smaller builds. Therefore, Taylor is not simply seeking to suggest that God is physically
larger than himself, but instead aiming to use their difference in bodily

Gatsby Delusion
In the article, The Gatsby Delusion, Sarah Churchwell discusses the American Dream and it relates to
F. Scott Fitzgerald s, The Great Gatsby. Churchwell says that the term, American Dream is used to
represent our failures in life rather than the successes. During the 1920 s, the nation s wealth was not
evenly spread because the richest owned forty percent of the nation s wealth while more than half
lived in poverty. James Truslow Adams wrote a novel about the American Dream and stated that the
belief in the common man and the insistence upon his having, as far as possible, equal opportunity in

Towards the beginning, she argues that the American dream represents our failures. I agree with that
point because the dream was something most people could not achieve and it was mainly a struggle.
The American Dream has become the nation s favourite way to discuss widespread inequality and
downward social mobility. This means that the wealthy people are able to succeed and accomplish
their dream because they have more money. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby was not able to fulfill his
dream of being with Daisy due to the fact he was poor. Churchwell emphasizes Fitzgerald s
knowledge from the 1920 s and continues to relate it to today s society. She says that Adams said that
the dead dream will always fight on, as we try to touch the intangible, struggling unhappily,
undespairingly towards what we keep losing. Fighting for a dream that is most likely not going to
occur because of financial difficulties creates tension with those who can afford anything they want.

Similarities Between Frankenstein And The Modern Prometheus
When Mary first wrote Frankenstein, she was debating over the name, she was thinking of either
Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus. The Modern Prometheus was actually a pretty legitimate
option for this novel. The there are many similarities between Prometheus and the story of
Frankenstein, such as what Prometheus does to the gods and how he steals fire and meat, and how
Frankenstein manages to synthesize life and gift it to his creation.
Prometheus is the Greek titan, who is the God of forethought and crafty counsel. He was given the
task of making man from clay. He performed this task, and in doing so also tried to better the lives of
his creation, so he stole meat from the gods feast, and gave it to the humans. When Zeus discovered
that Prometheus had stolen meat, he punished him by withholding fire from him, but he in turn, stole
fire from the heavens in a fennel stalk and gave it to man as well. As a punishment for this, Zeus
ordered the creation of the first woman, Pandora, to bring misfortune into the house of man, and for
Prometheus to be tied up to a steak, where an eagle would feed on his ever regenerating liver. ... Show

Early Italian Renaissance Art Essay
The artistic theme in which an artist depicts the Virgin Mary with Jesus Christ as a child is known as
the Madonna and Child . This depiction has its roots in Early Christian art due to the iconic roles that
Christ and Mary play in the Christian religion (Dunkerton 37). The Madonna and Child has had a
place in many of the early periods and traditions of art. Religious themes were able to command such
a strong presence in the history of art due to their role as devotional aides in churches and other

Value Analysis Of Boeing
Boeing 787 Dreamliner Boeing is a global company that designs, manufactures, and sells airplanes. It

largest defense contractor. Boeing is also a leader manufacturer in space and security systems. Boeing
began in Seattle, WA in 1910 and now their headquarters are in Chicago, IL and is the largest exporter

trying to accelerate development time and reduce overall costs. Boeing actively embraced outsourcing
to their supply chain that involved over 40 suppliers in about 100 different locations around the world.
According to Forbes Magazine, The approach was intended to reduce the 787 s development time
from six to four years and development cost from $10 to $6 billion.
In the 1990 s the company Airbus started stealing market share from Boeing. Boeing responded by
innovating their products using value analysis. According to Professor Todd s chapter four slide 12,
value analysis is the examination of the function of parts and materials to reduce the cost and/or

with a wide spectrum of manifestations and a huge impact on quality of life [4]. Resnick et al (2013)
reported long term effects of sexual function after radical prostate cancer treatment reported by
prostate cancer survivors. As shown in a 15 yr follow up study consisted of 1655 men who had
localized prostate cancer the decline in erectile function following treatment is progressive, regardless
of treatment type (eg, surgery, radiation therapy). (20)
Unfortunately all treatment for prostate cancer can impact ED. While there are a number of medical
options for managing this, the emotional and psychological impact can be profound. It is important
that the patient is prepared for the likely possibility that recovery of ED will take a long time. There
are numerous treatments available to try before any improvements may be seen, patients should view
this recovery as rehabilitation. (21)
When analysing ED from a psychological perspective, the sense of a mans masculine identity being
affected can be a very distressful. Masculinity is a term used to describe a set of key characteristics
that is used to define a man as opposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Counselling patients and partners that the sexual recovery process can take time and persistence to
reduce anger and frustration during the process. Both patients and their partners need to appreciate
that their previous sex life will be changed. Discussing the challenges associated with ED treatments
with patients early before primary prostate cancer treatment should promote resilience in the presence
of erectile failure and circumvent demoralization because of repeated ED treatments that are not fully
restorative.

The Failure Of Mediation In Darfur
Introduction
At the time of writing, the Syrian conflict has raged on for nearly half a decade, while that in Darfur
for well over a decade. In both instances, some of the international community s most experienced
mediators attempted to halt the fighting. None, however, were able to bring more than a few days of
respite to these violent conflicts.
Since the end of World War II, mediation has grown as a form of conflict management tool. As
mediation gained prominence and primacy in international relations as a method for war termination,
wars are more often decided in a meeting room than on the battlefield. In fact, since the end of the
Cold War, the trend in war termination has almost reversed as the number mediated settlements ...

With every failed ceasefire, conflicts, like those in Darfur and Syria, become more complex,
entrenched and widespread; conflict actors multiply, grievances become further aggravated, more
territory is engulfed in violence and the means of aggression become more brutal. The failure of a
ceasefire sets a peace process back tremendously and often gives rise to further bloodshed. Successive
failures, particularly in situations of acute power imbalances and deeply held perceptions of injustice,
often contribute to a conflict becoming protracted and intractable, making it almost impossible to
mediate. There is a growing urgency therefore to understand how to more effectively mediate durable
ceasefires more effectively.
The challenge of reaching a ceasefire, in large part, stems from the nature of the armed conflict itself.
Most conflicts today take place within the borders of states and are fought between state actors and
armed groups. Intra state conflicts are particularly challenging to mediate as the obvious asymmetry in
favour of the state often precludes its officials from accepting any mediation. State actors are usually
well organised, have the full force of the state s security apparatus at their disposal and enjoy
legitimacy in eyes of the international community. In contrast, armed groups, at least initially, are a
band of civilians: untrained in warfare; incoherent in philosophy; disjointed in structure; and

Hypocrites
I really liked this video because it made me put my iman to the test and helped me see if I was one of
the hypocrites described. This khutbah reminded me of many other videos I watched about the
believer s iman and heart. A scary thing said by Noman Khan was that the hypocrites thought that they
had iman. The hypocrites on the Day of Judgement will say that they were with the believers in this
world, they prayed with them and were friends with them. This could be anyone from the whole
Ummah which is quite alarming to me. I once watched a khutbah which basically talked about how
easy it is to sin in the twenty first century. It is so easy to do sin behind the closed door especially sins
that are done on technology. As Noman Khan said, the hypocrites kept putting themselves in trials. A
person who sins keeps putting themselves in trails because they know that they are ... Show more

He said that a man is walking in the jungle. While he is walking, he looks back and sees a lion chasing
him. The man runs until he reaches a well in which he jumps. The man manages to hold on to a rope
and he breathes a sigh of relief. He looks up sees the lion hovering over him, waiting for him and he
looks down and there is a large serpent with its mouth open waiting for him to fall. The only support
the man has is the rope and after a while he sees a white mouse and a black mouse set upon the rope,
nibbling it. In front of him he sees a honeycomb and the man sticks his finger in the honey and places
it on his tongue. The sweetness of the honey momentarily makes him forget about the lion, serpent
and the two mice. The lion is death, which always chasing you, the serpent is the grave, which you
will fall into, the rope is your life. The black mouse denotes the night and the white mouse denotes the
day which are always nibbling upon your life. The honey is the dunya, a man tastes the sweetness of
the dunya, he forgets about his grave and

  • 2. Great Depression 2008 Essay History has shown us again, and again that when power is left unchecked it becomes corrupt and out of control, that is the iron law of oligarchy. In the US we saw this happen recently in the 2008 economic meltdown. The banks and corporations should never have been aloud to become to big to fail, and once they did grow to a point when they were there should have been more government oversight to make sure things did not get out of hand. After the great depression laws were put in place to try to prevent something like that from ever happening again, but we undid those restrictions and ended up in a place eerily similar to somewhere we had been before. In this paper I will cover a brief history of the great depression, and show how the situation in 2008 was all too similar. I will also discuss and analyze the factors that brought us to the tipping point in our most recent economic scare. And finally I will explain why the actions taken by the FED were necessary and kept us from an even more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a huge company with thousands of employees and ties to other large companies goes down it can easily destroy the whole system and ruin the American economy along with the economies of many other nations. It is clear that these companies failing can cause immense damage to an economy but it is not clear what causes these companies to fail in the first place. Back in the depression it was fear and oversight that caused the banks to fail and in 2008 it was the same lack of oversight that allowed things to get so out of hand that the economy was on the brink of total collapse. • 5. The Word-Pregnancy Model Of The Logogen Model Word recognition is the reader s ability to correctly identify words without needing contextual aid. People tend to recognize words faster if they are more frequent (i.e. more common in their everyday language), a psychological phenomenon known as the word frequency effect. An example of a high frequency word is the , whereas promiscuous , for instance, is a low frequency word. Similarly, people tend to be better at correctly recognizing letters within words compared to isolated letters and to orthographically illegal strings (i.e. nonwords, such as SUT ). This is known as the word superiority effect. Many models attempt to explain the different phenomena that arose as a result of studying reading. The logogen model (Morton, 1969) aims to explain the word frequency effect in terms of low or high thresholds. Each logogen contains a number of characteristics about given words, such as meaning, appearance and sound. A logogen will be activated by psychological stimuli or contextual information that triggers the most characteristics. When the activation level rises above the threshold level, that word is selected. As there is no comparison between logogens, more than one response can be triggered by one stimulus. High frequency words (those most commonly used), have a lower threshold, meaning that they require less perceptual power to recognize and decode from the mental lexicon, than low frequency words. Once the threshold is fired, the meaning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then, we added the salt water solution on the onion and put it under the microscope and let it sit for a few. By adding salt water it would make the water move out of the cell because the surrounding area is hypertonic. Attachment is an emotional bond to another person. Psychologist John Bowlby (1969, 1988) was the first attachment theorist, describing attachment as a lasting psychological connectedness between human beings. The determinant of attachment is not food but care and responsiveness. Bowlby suggested that a child would initially form only one attachment and that the attachment figure acted as a secure base for exploring the world. The attachment relationship acts as a prototype for all future social relationships so disrupting it can have severe consequences. Although Bowlby did not rule out the possibility of other attachment figures for a child, he did believe that there should be a primary bond which was much more important than any other (usually the mother). Bowlby believes that this attachment is different in kind (qualitatively different) from any subsequent attachments. Bowlby argues that the relationship with the mother is somehow different altogether from other relationships. Essentially, Bowlby suggested that the nature of monotropy (attachment conceptualized as being a vital and close bond with just one attachment figure) meant that a failure to initiate, or a breakdown of, the maternal attachment would lead to serious negative consequences, possibly including affectionless psychopathy. He believes that the long term consequences of maternal deprivation might include the following: delinquency, reduced intelligence, increased aggression, depression ... The Revolt of Mother clearly displays the repression of women in a society much like the one we live in today, and the story leaves the reader with an essential lesson of standing up for one s self. This piece of work is heavily influenced by the oppression Freedom faced during her life time. In Freeman s story Mother is meant to represent every woman, while Father represents every man. Pecola is raped by her father, which causes her to personify her doubts in an attempt to obtain compliments for her blue eyes, as she subconsciously avoids rejection by her community. According to the society in which she lives, when Pecola is raped by her father, the community treats her as an outcast because she could have prevented her pregnancy. In July 1979, Sony brought music from traditional speakers and household radios to a portable cassette tape player The Walkman. At that time, music was not considered being personal or private but rather being shared among a group of people, journalists doubted that anyone would want to buy a tape player without a record function just because it was handy. However, the first batch completely sold out at the end of August and the demand of the Walkman continued to rise dramatically afterwards, copious new models of the Walkman were released, and by the time of 1995, the total number of productions of the Walkman had reached 150 million (Johnson, 2011). • 33. Edward Taylor Prologue Poem Analysis In Edward Taylor s Prologue he seeks to demonstrate the inferiority of man in respect to God s glory. Taylor begins his piece by creating a metaphor in which his own subsidiarity to God is described in terms of physical stature and uniqueness. He then purposefully includes phrases with erroneous meter and imperfect rhymes to demonstrate that his inferiority extends to his abilities as a writer. Taylor further attempts to establish his lack of authorial skills by including repetitious words, implying that he lacks an extensive vocabulary. When combined these tactics serve to support the idea that Edward Taylor has many shortcomings, both as a human and a poet, especially in comparison to the greatness of God. Taylor begins demonstrating his meagerness by describing the vast inequity between physical standing of God and man by employing a metaphor. In this metaphor, Taylor is but a mere Crumb of Dust in comparison to the glory of God s creation (line 1). This contrast firstly demonstrates Taylor s inadequacy when examined from a physical perspective; Taylor is but the smallest piece of dust, while God s glory is, comparatively, almost endless in size and scope. God being larger than Edward Taylor serves to suggest that God is thus innately superior to Taylor, as greater size implies superiority over those with smaller builds. Therefore, Taylor is not simply seeking to suggest that God is physically larger than himself, but instead aiming to use their difference in bodily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With every failed ceasefire, conflicts, like those in Darfur and Syria, become more complex, entrenched and widespread; conflict actors multiply, grievances become further aggravated, more territory is engulfed in violence and the means of aggression become more brutal. The failure of a ceasefire sets a peace process back tremendously and often gives rise to further bloodshed. Successive failures, particularly in situations of acute power imbalances and deeply held perceptions of injustice, often contribute to a conflict becoming protracted and intractable, making it almost impossible to mediate. There is a growing urgency therefore to understand how to more effectively mediate durable ceasefires more effectively. The challenge of reaching a ceasefire, in large part, stems from the nature of the armed conflict itself. Most conflicts today take place within the borders of states and are fought between state actors and armed groups. Intra state conflicts are particularly challenging to mediate as the obvious asymmetry in favour of the state often precludes its officials from accepting any mediation.
