Loss Of Private Life In The Circle By Dave Eggers
The The Circle is a novel written by an American author, Dave Eggers. The novel revolves around a
social construction and deconstruction of private life and the effects they have on the lives of
individuals and corporate firms. Eggers unfold a story of a young lady, Mae, at a top technology firm,
which is headed by three giants he describes as Three Wise Men . The technology firm, which he calls
The Circle, is in the business of making life transparent through its sophisticated technological
innovations. It s a fascinating story, suggestively telling how internet technology has led to loss of
private information to corporate firms and internet giants. The three wise men, possibly alluded to by
Eggers are Twitter, Facebook and Google. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The court of the public is the most unjust court, court ruled by emotions and hunger for control and
revenge. As in the case of a politician who when it nears elections acts in a predictable manner in a bid
to please the voters. Mae s great motivation for her entirely public life is to please her millions of
followers and be popular, get highest ratings and move closest to The Circle s inner circle. She is a
public robot, her expectations vested in the public reward. No one really cares about Mae, what
remains with her outside The Circle is her family and her father s multiple sclerosis. After her father s
distrust on the SeeChange, she is distressed about the public knowing about the distrust and about her
ex, Mercer. That s all the public can offer at times, distrust. The public always has no better reward,
the worth of sacrificing private life. It is needless to share every bit of problems, worries and feeling in
the social network, there is always no solution there. Instead, sharing will make you more depressed
and drive you to the solitary

Essay on Magic in The Descent of Innana and Sappho
Magic in The Descent of Innana and Sappho
In the ancient text The Descent of Innana and the lyric poetry of Sappho, language is viewed as magic.
Not only are the words themselves acting as magic, as in an invocation, but other things manifest
themselves as magic throughout the works. The most common throughout the works of Sappho is that
of love. Sappho also shows us the magic of everyday life in many of her poems. Finally, the writing
down of the works performs a magic all of its own; the magic of continuation. Through the writing of
their works the story of Innana and the poetry of Sappho will live on forever. The most obvious use of
language as magic is in The Descent of Innana. This text is actually all ... Show more content on

In the poem You know the place: then , Sappho invokes the Goddess Aphrodite. She does this by
calling out to the goddess and naming the place she wishes for Aphrodite to appear. Leave Crete and
come to us / waiting where the grove is / pleasantest, by precincts / sacred to you; incense / smokes on
the altar... ( lines 2 6). This shows how words were believed to hold the power to persuade a god or
goddess. The hope was that, if the offering of poetry was beautiful enough, then the god would grant
the request of the poet. This is not the only form of magic that words held for the ancient Greeks.
In another poem that Sappho wrote, A Prayer to Aphrodite , Sappho describes anguished love. Sappho
desires nothing more then to have this unrequited love returned to her arms. In this poem the magic of
language calls Aphrodite forth and inspires her to do Sappho a favor. It inspires the goddess to give
Sappho the power to bring this person back to the glittering net of her arms (19). This shows Sappho s
true desire to harness the power of love through the magic of language. If she can only write this poem
beautiful enough then Aphrodite will take pity on her and give her what she most wants.
What s the secret wish of your crazy, wild heart? / Whom must Love compel with Her wily ruses /
back into the glittering net of your arms? / Sappho, who hurts you? (17 20). This is what Sappho
wishes to hear from Aphrodite. The power and beauty

The Civil Rights Movement And The American Civil Movement
The Civil Rights Movement, also known as the American Civil Rights Movement and other names, is
a term that encompasses the strategies, groups, and social movements in the United States whose goals
were to end racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans and to secure legal
recognition and federal protection of the citizenship rights enumerated in the Constitution and federal
law. The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and
1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations and productive
dialogues between activists and government authorities. The movement was led by social activists like

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment
discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the
crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. First it was proposed by President
John F. Kennedy, it survived strong opposition from southern members of Congress and was then
signed into law by Kennedy s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson. In the following years, Congress
expanded the act and also passed additional legislation aimed at bringing equality to African
Americans, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Martin Luther king jr is was Baptist minister and

Lying In Huck Finn
In the movie Huckleberry Finn lying plays a big role in the plot. I personally do not like lying at all
and believe it will only get you further into trouble, but this story does an excellent job of proving me
wrong. There are plenty of times where Huck easily produces a name and why he is where he is. He
effortlessly comes up with elaborate back stories and takes away any suspicion from himself. I d like
to say that there are no benefits to lying, but it definitely helps Huck escape some sticky situations.
The three areas that I will focus on are superstitions, which are lies in of themselves, Huckleberry
dresses as a girl, and the Duke and the King join Huck and Jim on the raft.
A big part of the movie Huckleberry Finn is superstition. The definition of superstition is a widely
held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or
event. In other words, a lie that you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

like to addressed as Duke or Lord . The other man sees what is happening and joins in on the royal
treatment by saying that he too has had some bad luck and is actually the King of France. This leads to
Huck and Jim being treated as servants and having a terrible time on the raft. If the Duke and the King

I agree that People gamble because it is fun . According to Panos Markopoulos, Wijnand IJsselsteijn,
Duncan Rowland (2008) that fun is enjoyment, amusement, or light hearted pleasure things that make
people feel happy to do it. Related to gambling, fun means the feeling of excitement, emotional ups
and downs, make the people have an impassioned feeling to addict the game.
Van Hoff, H, Vallen G, McDonald M amp; Weiner (2007) indicated that there are three major reasons
people gamble for fun such as entertainment, social activity and exhilaration. Entertainment is an
activity that helps people achieves a distraction from the boredom and the difficulties of daily life.
(William Norman Thompson, 2001) Gambling offer a sources of entertainment because gambling give
an excitement when the players join in the new games. Beside the entertainment, gambling can be
defined as a social activity such as a great way to relax from stressful life, sadness or depression, to
feel more powerful, to be in control of social situations, to feel less shy, and to make friends. (Jeffrey

Investigating The Charging And Discharging Abilities Of A...
The objective of the experiment was to measure the charging and discharging abilities of a resistor
capacitor circuit. In a RC circuit the voltage is an asymptomatic function of the charging time. If a
battery were connected in series in a circuit with a resistor, there would be a constant current. In
contrast, if the battery were connected with a capacitor in series, the current would be time varying,
decaying to zero as the capacitor charges up. The results of the experiments verified the properties of
the RC Circuits, confirming that voltage is a function of the product of resistance and capacitance. The
experiment produced results that agreed with expectations confirming the electrical theory of RC
circuits.

Capacitors are considered nonlinear devices because their charging and discharging rate depends on
the charge already there on the capacitor. The higher the charge on the plates of the capacitor, the
slower its charging rate. This is because the slow buildup of electric charge poses resistance to the
addition of extra charge as voltage starts to build across the plates. As a result, the flow of current gets
smaller. In contrast, while discharging, the higher the charge on the plates, the faster it discharges. On
the application of a voltage source to a circuit, the capacitor attempts to reach the full voltage
asymptotically, even though it never reaches the full voltage. The mathematical formula that
represents the voltage across the capacitor is:
V(t) = V0(1 et/RC)
For a charged capacitor, the mathematical formula that represents the voltage across the capacitor as it
is discharging:
V(t) = V0(et/RC)
Where:
RC is the time constant Ƭ of the circuit;
V0 is the potential difference in volts (V) of the voltage source;
R is the resistance in ohms (Ω);
C is the capacitance in the circuit in farads (F); and
T is the time measured in seconds (s).
After one time constant, the voltage is (e 1) x (V). It takes almost 3 times RC for a capacitor to get
charged to 95% of the voltage. Ƭ (seconds) = R (ohms) x C (farads)
From Ohm s Law:
R = V/I;
Capacitance = Q/V (charge stored per voltage applied); and
I = Q/t (amount of charge flowing per time).
As such:
RC = R x

Churchill the Writer
Churchill the Writer
Winston Churchill (1874 1965) is one of the most celebrated, criticized, and without question debated
political figures in world history. While Churchill had a long and controversial political career, most
notably his nine years as Prime Minster of Great (1940 45, 1951 55), his fame, something many view
as a crucial aspect of his life he thrived off of and live for, spanned well beyond the years he held
various positions in political office. Churchill was born and raised in the Victorian Era, a time in
which the British Empire was at its peak as the world s strongest power. When studying almost any
aspect of Churchill s life, his romantic vision of Britain as a thriving empire and world power holds a

Finest Hours
In 2010 Adam Gopnik published a biography of Winston Churchill in The New Yorker titled Finest
Hours. While the article is not a direct analysis of Churchill as a writer, it provides wonderful insight
into the theme of Churchill as a ninetieth century Romantic who believed in race and nation and
always thought in terms not of national interest but of a national character that could trump interest .
(4) Gopnik s biography of Winston Churchill is a reconfirmation that the powerful and glorious British
Empire was present in everything he did.
Gopnik also analyzes the rhetoric of Churchill, focusing specifically on his Speech to the House of
Commons in June of 1940, stating, Churchill s words did all that words can do in the world. They said
what had to be done; they announced why it had to be done then; they inspired those who had to do it .
(1) This is similar to Addison s character description of Churchill as direct and frank.
Sir Winston Churchill as a Historian A.L. Rowse s (1962) article Sir Winston Churchill as a Historian.
Rowse begins by clarifying that the subject of this article is not an analysis of Churchill s place in
history, rather more austerely as a writer . (165) One of the main theses Rowse presents that if
Churchill was judged solely as a historian, there would be no debate on his success.

Analyzing Rachel Carson’s “the Obligation to Endure” Essay
Analyzing Rachel Carson s The Obligation to Endure In her essay The Obligation to Endure , Rachel

consequences of lethal materials being released into the environment. She uses horrifying evidence, a
passionate tone, audience, and the overall structure of her essay to express to her readers that the
pollution created by man wounds the earth. There are many different ways that pollution can harm the
environment, from the nuclear explosions discharging toxic chemicals into the air, to the venomous
pesticides sprayed on plants that kills vegetation and sickens cattle. The adjustments to these

changes in his or her own life to help the natural world. Rachel Carson uses an assertive tone to get
her point across. She has a one sided argument and is very aggressive to those who oppose her point
of view. She is very effective at stating her opinion to her audience. In her essay Rachel Carson targets
anyone who will listen as her audience. She wants to inform human beings of the effects chemicals
have on the environment. Rachel Carson s audience had little knowledge of the effects radiation and
pesticides might have on nature or to themselves. She successfully enlightened her audience to the
harm man was causing to the environment not only presently, she also wrote of future ramifications.
She predicts Future historians may well be amazed by our distorted sense of proportion. How could
intelligent beings seek to control a few unwanted species by methods that contaminated the entire
environment...? (Carson 615). This statement might make her audience scrutinize their actions through
the eyes of future generations. Rachel Carson used cause and effect, problem and solution, compare

providing adequate information based on statistical data and empirical evidences. In chapter four, the
author argues that level of education affects the potential earnings of household. Indeed he writes, The
access to education expands the potential for human capital thereby enabling one to qualify for better
paid jobs (29). To support his argument, the author proves it based on the results of the survey in
which it is presented in table 4.1 that show the distribution of household heads based on the level of
general education. Based on table 4.1 it is found that the level of illiteracy among household heads is
higher in Kelantan and Perak as these two states contribute the largest share in national poverty
compared to the two high performers namely Kedah and Terengganu which is lower. The author also
provide empirical evidences to support his stances as expected, the positive relationship between the
number of years spent in education and the potential for higher earnings is also clearly evident from
our empirical investigation in App. Table , col.4 (30). The author consistently elaborates and

Not the full version, mind you. It was of course censored to slaves and left out some very meticulous

controversial, now and then. But regardless of these flaws I kept reading, as it was the first novel that I
had read that really hooked me in and left me with a real sense of American pride. So when I was

While the argument is that the plot is weak and has a unsatisfactory ending, I know for a fact it is one
of the only endings to a novel that I will ever remember. The ending really brought together some
previously left out details that Twain built up well in my opinion, and the final goodbye to the territory
really left me as a reader feeling American pride. This American pride is also something that I will
forever remember as it is not only a main focus, but is the biggest part of the argument for being the
great American novel. It s sense of adventure and freedom left me and I m sure people with the feeling
that anything was possible through freedom and adventure, the very things symbolized my America.
So, really it s a no brainer for me. It would be an absolute travesty to remove Huckleberry Finn from
our curriculum as it offers so much and portrays the real life that existed for African Americans during
the 1840s. It has adventure, daring, morals, complex emotions, and most of all an overtone of
American pride that can always be useful to younger generations that are still learning the term. Sure,
there are other books that could tell the story of how wrong slavery is and the evils of racism but I
believe that what Huckleberry Finn brings to the table is to much to

Diversity Is An Important Element Of The United States
Diversity is an important element of the United States of America, but also has been a topic debated
over for many years. The arrival of immigrants in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century

races. These immigrants faced much adversity in the process of gaining citizenship due to racial
qualifications for naturalization and fitting into separate race categories. Since white was the superior

Thind was an Asian Indian, which was scientifically categorized by anthropologists as Caucasian

his racial identity came into question. There was much debate over the unmistakable physical
differences between Hindus and others who were categorized as white. The Supreme Court leaned
towards the common knowledge aspect of evaluating racial differences instead of using science by
using physical characteristics to differ between whites and aliens. For example, Justice Sutherland and
the Court decided that the children born in this country of Hindu parents would retain indefinitely the
clear evidence of their ancestry, which links physical attributes to the Court s social understanding of
whiteness. The flexibility of processes involved in identifying race used in these two cases lead to
many questions and concerns about what it means to truly be white, and how that is actually

the eligibility of both Ozawa and Thind for citizenship. However, his oscillation between common and

Armageddon was not created as a whimsical fantasy of Hollywood masterminds. In fact, its basic

scientists were able to witness in detail the collision of two solar system bodies. Having circled Jupiter

Hawaii’s Renewable Energy Future Essay example
By 2020, Hawaii is aiming to generate 20 percent of its energy from non fossil fuels (Brown et al.
2008, 11). According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Arent et al. 2009, 1 2), petroleum
accounts for 90% of Hawaii s energy consumption and 75% of their electricity. Since Hawaii has no
pipelines or oil fields, they are forced to import petroleum to accommodate their energy needs (Arent
et al. 2009, 1). Hawaii is disconnected from the rest of the United States, which means that Hawaii has
to take care of its own energy needs (Croucher 2010, 79).How can alternative energy sources reduce
the need to import of petroleum?

Hawaii has the bioavailability to support biofuels as a renewable resource.
In addition to fuel crops, Hawaii also has abundant resources for biomass heating. During their
research Turn et al. (2002, 4) found that the biomass resources for Hawaii include: swine, dairy, and
poultry manure, sugarcane bagasse and trash, pineapple processing waste, macadamia nut shells,
municipal solid wastes, food waste from commercial food preparation facilities, sewage sludge, and
fat, oil and grease wastes from food preparation activities. One of the main advantages is that biomass
energy can use municipal solid waste. Hawaii also produces about 10 pounds of trash per person
coming to about 1.8 million tons of trash per year (Yap 2008). Hawaii has a power plant that can use
over 2,000 tons of garbage a day to generate electricity (Covanta Energy 2011). Hawaii has decided to
start exporting its garbage to give it enough time to expand the power plant s capacity (Yap 2008).
Smaller scale biomass fueled power generation can help get rid of agricultural and municipal refuse,
while alleviating the strain on the electricity grid and providing a cheap locally based source of
electricity (Turn, Keffer, and Staackmann 2002, 17). If Hawaii develops biomass as a renewable
resource, it can reduce the need to import petroleum and export garbage.

Analysis Of The Movie The Help
The Help is a drama set in Jackson, Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960 s. The
film focuses on the development of Eugenia Skeeter Phelan, a young, aspiring Anglo American author
trying to find her way in the world of writing. After becoming closer acquainted with Aibileen, an
African American maid employed by her peer Elizabeth Leefolt, Skeeter becomes more aware of the
racist attitudes that white Americans in her community have towards black Americans. After
successfully interviewing Minny, Aibileen s best friend and fellow maid, Skeeter interviews the maids
of multiple households and collects their stories and experiences of their lives. This leads Skeeter on a
risky path towards bringing awareness to black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Mammy is a stereotypical black motherly figure that has cast African American actors as either
slaves or domestic help in the film industry since its inception. For example in the classic 1939 film
Gone with the Wind adapted from Margaret Mitchell s 1936 novel set during the American Civil war
in 1861, the character named Mammy is played by African American actress Hattie McDaniel. In this
role Mammy is portrayed as an overweight, elderly, black servant. She is beyond the years of
childbearing but who is devoted to the white O Hara family she is assigned to nurture. In the book she
is described as, a huge old woman with the small, shrewd eyes of an elephant. She was shining black,
pure African, devoted to her last drop of blood to the O Haras... (Mitchell, 1936) . Since this depiction
a Mammy has become an archetypal figure that began with slavery but continued to be depicted by
white Americans as classic domesticated help. Like McDaniel s character these women are most often
characterised as portly with large breasts (Gray, 2004) devoid of any sexual identity. In The Help the
appearance of the African American maids, particularly the main character, Aibileen, is reminiscent of
the Mammy figure. Aibileen is not portrayed as overweight as Hattie McDaniel s character, but she is
noticeably larger than all of the white characters in the film. Aibileen also has very dark skin which
separates her from her white counterparts. In the novel Aibileen compares

Jon Stewart and News Distortion
Network News stations like Fox and MSNBC have distorted news information so much so that
viewers now turn to comedy central to keep current with the news. Turning to comedians for news is
not a horrible idea as long as viewers understand that comedians must also distort news in order to
entertain. Now that is not to say that comedians give out fake news; a comedian must first understand
the whole of the topic before running it through a comedic process, in which they then begin distorting
the information to attain laughter. Jon Stewart has an enormous impact in the media. Many young
viewers turn to Stewart for his take on the news. According to Cox of Wonkette.com in an article by
Kurtz Howard, The Campaign of a Comedian; Jon Stewart s Fake Journalism Enjoys Real Political
Impact, says It s not that young people don t like politics. The way politics is talked about in the media
is alienating. They re seeing Jon Stewart as a kind of hero who will lead us out of the darkness.
Stewart allows his viewers to keep current with the news by giving sound bites, which they then could
verify or explore. While many news reporters believe Stewart to be highly controversial, the majority
of young adults will watch Jon Stewart s comedic take on the news because it is unbiased and attempts
to only entertain. In an article by Rachel Smolkin, What the Mainstream Can Learn from Jon Stewart,

Computer Programming In Primary And Secondary Education.
Computer Programming in Primary and Secondary Education
Dylan Baiko
It is important for students to come out of grade school equipped with skills relevant to today s
society. Therefore, computer programming should be full integrated into school curriculum from
kindergarten to grade 12. Today s society is becoming more and more reliant on computer technology.
It is a tool used everywhere and it is impotent to understand how it works in our daily lives. Therefore,
computer programming is a necessary skill for everyone to have. Learning this skill is important as it
builds critical thinking and algorithmic problem solving skills. These are important life skills as they
allow people to better contribute to society. This means that anyone, ... Show more content on

This would allow schools to implement curriculums that teach computer programming and other
programs (like Microsoft Office, etc.) in parallel as students get into higher grades. A counter
argument to this would be that computers and computer programming is too complicated for students
of such a young age to learn. While it is true that programming in a professional setting involves
learning complicated programming languages and syntax, this doesn t mean it s not possible for
students in grades as early as kindergarten to learn basic programming skills. For example, various
Educational programming languages (EPLs), such as Scratch and E toys, have been developed for K
12 students . . . These EPLs use a tile scripting based on a graphic user interface as a coding method,
instead of typing text commands. This makes the instructions easy to learn and helps students reduce
syntax errors (Shim 1). Therefore, integrating computer programming into even the earliest grades in
school would be possible. Another counter argument to integrating computer programming in school
is that kids, especially young ones, tend to spend too much time on computers and other electronic
devices, and frequently spending time on computers to learn computer programming will only
encourage this. It is true that if computer programming was taught in schools, this would make it so

The Most Influential Writers Of The Twentieth Century
Through out Frank Kafka s life he wrote many German novels and short stories. Kafka has been
known to be one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. From Kafka s writing he
shows that what we go through influences in our life influences what we write and how we write and
that sometimes the things we go through are so hard that we need to write in allegory. He was born on
July 3, 1883 in Bohemia. He was born into a middle class German speaking Jewish family and was
the eldest of six children. His two younger brothers died at a very young age and his sisters were sent
to a concentration camp and were thought to have died there. After Kafka graduated high school, he
was accepted to the Charles University of Prague and studied law. This is where he met Max Brod and
they became very good friends. Kafka graduated university with a degree in Doctor of Law on June
18,1906. He started working at Workers Accident Insurance Institute in Bohemia. He gained several
promotions through the years that he worked there but was also very committed to his writing. In 1917
Kafka began to suffer from tuberculosis that would require a lot of time for recovering. Surrounding
him self with his family as he was trying to get better. In 1923 he moved to Berlin to try and get some
writing done. This is where He fell in Weir 2 love with a girl named Dora Diamond. However, Kafka s
tuberculosis worsened and he died on June 3 1924 (Stephens, Kafka s Life). After his death at age 41 a

How Does Censorship Affect The World
Children are easily influenced and are risked to being exposed to nudity, violence and coarse
language. Without censorship children would be exposed to things such as the ones listed above. In
the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, it talks about how mass censorship affects the world. In the
book Fahrenheit 451 censorship affected the world in a bad way such as taking citizens freedom to
think for themselves away. In the book Fahrenheit 451 it is shown how censorship is bad but
censorship can also affect the world in a positive way. In order to obtain order in America, citizens
need censorship. Censorship guards children´s minds, protects citizen´s from doing harm to
individuals and keeps proper morals intact.

Thermal Solar Energy Lab Report
The results of this simulation are displayed in Fig. 4, where injected and extracted heat per length ((q)
̇/L) pulses were simulated for 300 months. A charging time of 19 months is needed to charge the
ground by thermal solar energy in order to achieve the desired design temperature. In the figure, this
19 month period begins in June and ends in January. When the system is actively supplying thermal
energy to the building, the temperature rises in the summer months to a peak of about 80 C and falls in
the winter months to a low of about 67 C. The yearly average is about 71.5 C.

Also, some savings are achieved by using more efficient cooling technology to reduce grid purchases.
The retrofit therefore reduces the total energy purchased from the grid, but it also modifies the hourly
electrical demand profile. Both pieces of information are required to compute the savings, because it is
assumed that the grid pricing is demand sensitive, such that the price per kWh each month is a
function of the load factor for that month. Load factor is defined on a monthly basis as the ratio of the
average power consumption for the month divided by the peak hourly power consumption. The load
factor measures the consistency of the demand over time, with high load factors indicating a more
consistent demand that is less costly for the utility to provide. The monthly per kWh grid price is
therefore inversely related to load factor.
To determine how the building retrofit would modify the grid electrical demand, the original aggregate
hourly demand is split, as was previously described, into heating, hot water, cooling, and baseline plug
load profiles. The cooling profile is scaled by 80% to estimate the electrical load for the more

the approach of tackling every stage of development, completing it and testing it before moving on to

designing this phone app. It also gives the advantage of discovering any problems early so they can be
rectified. We should take on the same methodical approach for the phone app testing each stage of

ensure expandability with the release of future updates with additional support structures. Techniques:
Consistency: the app must be consistent with any existing process that the hotel already has in place
users will already be familiar with these processes and the app must adhere to these Standardisation:
the same standards must be incorporated across platforms be it Android, iPhone, Blackberry or
Windows phones the process must look and operate the same throughout. Online help: on the chance
that mistakes are made users can access online help facilities. Multilingual support: it is safe to assume

only serve to enhance it. Familiarity: using symbols of familiarity will only serve to make the app
more user friendly elements like red meaning stop or caution, green meaning go, pictures or icons that

In the novel, A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid expresses her opinion towards imperialism in Antigua,
which has change the way how Antiguan people live. She then talks about issues of tourism and
corruption, and how everything to the readers is your fault as she described. Kincaid also reveals the
native s view on tourism. The book is written in second person, explaining her opinion, and the reader
is spoken to directly in the book. To make more sense of this, the reader is like a tourist whose visiting

the book progresses, Kincaid shows the readers how Antigua really is. The whole setting of Antigua
seemed to have gone unrepaired, living conditions are very poor, and places such as schools that are
mentioned to be unrecognizable. Kincaid also creates feeling of shame and misfortune for the
Antiguan people and blames the tourists, yet the tourist doesn t really seem to care for the moment.
Native inhabitants have different opinions of tourist. Most see them as friendly patrons, but others
such as Jamaica Kincaid, may see them as ignorant or cold hearted people who just don t understand.

The Impact Of Religion On Human Culture
For centuries, human culture has been influenced in a multitude of ways by many means but none
have had such an impact as religion. It has had countless wars waged in its name, even to this day.
Billions believe in some divine being(s) that transcends the ugliness of humanity that s omnipotent
and omniscient. Religion became a guide and a representation of how our lives should be led.
However, history has brought evidence that made it possible for this notion to be criticized and rather,
flipped. The majority of the human race believes that religion shaped our culture but it is rather the
other way round, in that the culture of our ancestors, the Mesopotamians and the Hebrews shaped
religion to explain the natural world and as a reflection of their lives and tribulations.
During the age of Mesopotamia, climate change was still a key factor in the survival of civilizations
but did not work on a global scale as it did before during cooling and warming periods. One day of
bad weather could destroy a year s worth of crops for a family and displace them without any means
of self sustainability. It would be a millennium until food could be brought to the area again. To the
average human living in Mesopotamia at the time, this would have been chaos, living in fear for when
everything that was earned would be destroyed.
This erratic behavior of nature could not be summed up as one god for there were no rhythms or
patterns to be discern so to compensate for that, each aspect of

Except For Those Of Us Who Are Above It By Herb Block
History classes have always been a requirement for high school students to graduate. Some of these
classes include United States history, Government, and World History. Although, there is a lack of any
classes dealing with local history. State history alone only receives attention in the elementary school
system and about a week in Government class. All school systems should include, in the required
classes to take to receive a high school diploma, a local history class, so that the students may have a
knowledge of the place where they live. Although, a more underlining issue behind local history needs
to be answered first. In the general world of history, local history is too often in the hands of ...

They should rather figure out their own history and help out the poor amateurs trying their best to put
the puzzle together. Furthermore, local history in general needs to be cared about more. Like said
before, the top level of prestige among historians is occupied by those who teach African or Asian
history (Hicken 1). This prestige is also portrayed very well by Herb Block s political cartoon Except
for Those of Us Who Are above It. Which, displays bureaucrats sitting on top of Washington above
everyone else, with a caption Equal Justice Under Law. Which, shows that those of more important
roles consider themselves better than the lower rules. All together, this shows that after people spend
countless years in school and in the work force being a historian, they are studying the histories
abroad and of more accomplishment, rather than their own with facts that have no meaning. Although,
even major historians have hypocritically given themselves over to the study of some phase of history
which, in the long run, amounted to only a minor aspect of a larger problem (Hicken 1). Yet, they
ridicule local history and those who research it. These issues amongst historians are the major
underlying issues when proposing the concept of a local history class. Now, looking at local history in
a more positive light; it has an impression on the current environments people are surrounded with.

Ford Mustang Pros And Cons
2005 Ford Mustang There was a time, once, when it symbolized everything Americans loved about
their cars. Powerful. Fast looking, with a tough stance. Practical enough to be convenient, and
impractical enough to be fun. Affordable. It could gallop like a horse and a regular guy could afford
one. It was the people s icon of American car culture. Was. It s a bitter, lonely word. And at some
point, people started connecting it to the Mustang. While Ford executives will point to the sales
figures (140,000 last year) as proof that the Mustang has always been a great seller with a strong
following, there was, nonetheless, a fading love for the car that has been a part of the American
highway landscape for 40 years. The Mustang simply stopped conjuring ... Show more content on

The Truth About War Revealed in the Film, The Thin Red Line
Terrence Malick s The Thin Red Line (1998) is a film that examines the Guadalcanal Battle of World
War II, looking past the physical results of the violence, in order to uncover the deeper truths and
ramifications of war. The film conveys themes and ideologies that are somewhat uncommon to war
films, especially WW II films. In this dark, surreal, journey, Malick takes us inside the minds of
soldiers experiencing this battle to capture a remote pacific island from the Japanese. We do not hear
or see gruff, hardened soldiers, anxious to die for their country. In fact, there are no heroes in The Thin
Red Line. There are only regular men, scared of fighting and scared of dying, ... Show more content

The film is certainly an anti war film, but it does not place blame. It merely accepts that there is war,
and comments on the effects of it, letting our emotional and mental response do the rest. It examines
war not through the battles and through the violence, but through the emotions of the soldiers.
Geoffrey Macnab, another reviewer of the film, agrees. He states that ìIn The Thin Red Line, the battle
scenes merely provide the backdrop to Malickís inquiries into military behavior and the nature of evil.
(Macnab 54). Voice overs throughout the film allow us to get into the heads of these men. One soldier
prays while another man day dreams about his wife in the U.S. One soldier, after standing among the
remains of dozens of dead bodies after his company has taken a Japanese stronghold, reflects on how
the bodies have become no different than those of ìdead dogs.î War, then, becomes an unnatural force.
It becomes a force that drives regular men to suppress their natural, human feelings. If it were not for
this war, men would not have to convince themselves that dead bodies are no different than dead dogs,
and men would not have to contemplate about whether or not they can kill another man.
During The Thin Red Line, the island of Guadalcanal becomes a metaphor for natural purity, and is
constantly contrasted with the violence that has invaded its serenity. Malick shot the film with special

  • 2. Loss Of Private Life In The Circle By Dave Eggers The The Circle is a novel written by an American author, Dave Eggers. The novel revolves around a social construction and deconstruction of private life and the effects they have on the lives of individuals and corporate firms. Eggers unfold a story of a young lady, Mae, at a top technology firm, which is headed by three giants he describes as Three Wise Men . The technology firm, which he calls The Circle, is in the business of making life transparent through its sophisticated technological innovations. It s a fascinating story, suggestively telling how internet technology has led to loss of private information to corporate firms and internet giants. • 3. Essay on Magic in The Descent of Innana and Sappho Magic in The Descent of Innana and Sappho In the ancient text The Descent of Innana and the lyric poetry of Sappho, language is viewed as magic. Not only are the words themselves acting as magic, as in an invocation, but other things manifest themselves as magic throughout the works. The most common throughout the works of Sappho is that of love. Sappho also shows us the magic of everyday life in many of her poems. Finally, the writing down of the works performs a magic all of its own; the magic of continuation. Through the writing of their works the story of Innana and the poetry of Sappho will live on forever. The most obvious use of language as magic is in The Descent of Innana. This text is actually all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the poem You know the place: then , Sappho invokes the Goddess Aphrodite. She does this by calling out to the goddess and naming the place she wishes for Aphrodite to appear. Leave Crete and come to us / waiting where the grove is / pleasantest, by precincts / sacred to you; incense / smokes on the altar... ( lines 2 6). This shows how words were believed to hold the power to persuade a god or goddess. The hope was that, if the offering of poetry was beautiful enough, then the god would grant the request of the poet. This is not the only form of magic that words held for the ancient Greeks. In another poem that Sappho wrote, A Prayer to Aphrodite , Sappho describes anguished love. Sappho desires nothing more then to have this unrequited love returned to her arms. In this poem the magic of language calls Aphrodite forth and inspires her to do Sappho a favor. It inspires the goddess to give Sappho the power to bring this person back to the glittering net of her arms (19). This shows Sappho s true desire to harness the power of love through the magic of language. If she can only write this poem beautiful enough then Aphrodite will take pity on her and give her what she most wants. What s the secret wish of your crazy, wild heart? / Whom must Love compel with Her wily ruses / back into the glittering net of your arms? / Sappho, who hurts you? (17 20). The Civil Rights Movement And The American Civil Movement The Civil Rights Movement, also known as the American Civil Rights Movement and other names, is a term that encompasses the strategies, groups, and social movements in the United States whose goals were to end racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans and to secure legal recognition and federal protection of the citizenship rights enumerated in the Constitution and federal law. The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations and productive dialogues between activists and government authorities. I personally do not like lying at all and believe it will only get you further into trouble, but this story does an excellent job of proving me wrong. There are plenty of times where Huck easily produces a name and why he is where he is. He effortlessly comes up with elaborate back stories and takes away any suspicion from himself. I d like to say that there are no benefits to lying, but it definitely helps Huck escape some sticky situations. The three areas that I will focus on are superstitions, which are lies in of themselves, Huckleberry dresses as a girl, and the Duke and the King join Huck and Jim on the raft. A big part of the movie Huckleberry Finn is superstition. The definition of superstition is a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event. In other words, a lie that you are ... Explain why or why not. I agree that People gamble because it is fun . According to Panos Markopoulos, Wijnand IJsselsteijn, Duncan Rowland (2008) that fun is enjoyment, amusement, or light hearted pleasure things that make people feel happy to do it. Related to gambling, fun means the feeling of excitement, emotional ups and downs, make the people have an impassioned feeling to addict the game. • 7. Investigating The Charging And Discharging Abilities Of A... The objective of the experiment was to measure the charging and discharging abilities of a resistor capacitor circuit. In a RC circuit the voltage is an asymptomatic function of the charging time. If a battery were connected in series in a circuit with a resistor, there would be a constant current. In contrast, if the battery were connected with a capacitor in series, the current would be time varying, decaying to zero as the capacitor charges up. The results of the experiments verified the properties of the RC Circuits, confirming that voltage is a function of the product of resistance and capacitance. The experiment produced results that agreed with expectations confirming the electrical theory of RC circuits. Sources of error ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Capacitors are considered nonlinear devices because their charging and discharging rate depends on the charge already there on the capacitor. The higher the charge on the plates of the capacitor, the slower its charging rate. This is because the slow buildup of electric charge poses resistance to the addition of extra charge as voltage starts to build across the plates. As a result, the flow of current gets smaller. In contrast, while discharging, the higher the charge on the plates, the faster it discharges. On the application of a voltage source to a circuit, the capacitor attempts to reach the full voltage asymptotically, even though it never reaches the full voltage. The mathematical formula that represents the voltage across the capacitor is: V(t) = V0(1 et/RC) For a charged capacitor, the mathematical formula that represents the voltage across the capacitor as it is discharging: V(t) = V0(et/RC) Where: RC is the time constant Ƭ of the circuit; V0 is the potential difference in volts (V) of the voltage source; R is the resistance in ohms (Ω); C is the capacitance in the circuit in farads (F); and T is the time measured in seconds (s). After one time constant, the voltage is (e 1) x (V). It takes almost 3 times RC for a capacitor to get charged to 95% of the voltage. Ƭ (seconds) = R (ohms) x C (farads) From Ohm s Law: R = V/I; Capacitance = Q/V (charge stored per voltage applied); and I = Q/t (amount of charge flowing per time). As such: RC = R x

(4) Gopnik s biography of Winston Churchill is a reconfirmation that the powerful and glorious British Empire was present in everything he did. Gopnik also analyzes the rhetoric of Churchill, focusing specifically on his Speech to the House of Commons in June of 1940, stating, Churchill s words did all that words can do in the world. They said what had to be done; they announced why it had to be done then; they inspired those who had to do it . The film focuses on the development of Eugenia Skeeter Phelan, a young, aspiring Anglo American author trying to find her way in the world of writing. After becoming closer acquainted with Aibileen, an African American maid employed by her peer Elizabeth Leefolt, Skeeter becomes more aware of the racist attitudes that white Americans in her community have towards black Americans. After successfully interviewing Minny, Aibileen s best friend and fellow maid, Skeeter interviews the maids of multiple households and collects their stories and experiences of their lives. The Mammy is a stereotypical black motherly figure that has cast African American actors as either slaves or domestic help in the film industry since its inception. For example in the classic 1939 film Gone with the Wind adapted from Margaret Mitchell s 1936 novel set during the American Civil war in 1861, the character named Mammy is played by African American actress Hattie McDaniel. In this role Mammy is portrayed as an overweight, elderly, black servant. She is beyond the years of childbearing but who is devoted to the white O Hara family she is assigned to nurture. In the book she is described as, a huge old woman with the small, shrewd eyes of an elephant. She was shining black, pure African, devoted to her last drop of blood to the O Haras... (Mitchell, 1936) . Since this depiction a Mammy has become an archetypal figure that began with slavery but continued to be depicted by white Americans as classic domesticated help. Like McDaniel s character these women are most often characterised as portly with large breasts (Gray, 2004) devoid of any sexual identity. In The Help the appearance of the African American maids, particularly the main character, Aibileen, is reminiscent of the Mammy figure. Aibileen is not portrayed as overweight as Hattie McDaniel s character, but she is noticeably larger than all of the white characters in the film. Aibileen also has very dark skin which separates her from her white counterparts. In the novel Aibileen compares ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Turning to comedians for news is not a horrible idea as long as viewers understand that comedians must also distort news in order to entertain. Now that is not to say that comedians give out fake news; a comedian must first understand the whole of the topic before running it through a comedic process, in which they then begin distorting the information to attain laughter. Jon Stewart has an enormous impact in the media. Many young viewers turn to Stewart for his take on the news. According to Cox of Wonkette.com in an article by Kurtz Howard, The Campaign of a Comedian; Jon Stewart s Fake Journalism Enjoys Real Political Impact, says It s not that young people don t like politics. The way politics is talked about in the media is alienating. They re seeing Jon Stewart as a kind of hero who will lead us out of the darkness. Stewart allows his viewers to keep current with the news by giving sound bites, which they then could verify or explore. While many news reporters believe Stewart to be highly controversial, the majority of young adults will watch Jon Stewart s comedic take on the news because it is unbiased and attempts to only entertain. Computer Programming in Primary and Secondary Education Dylan Baiko It is important for students to come out of grade school equipped with skills relevant to today s society. Therefore, computer programming should be full integrated into school curriculum from kindergarten to grade 12. Today s society is becoming more and more reliant on computer technology. It is a tool used everywhere and it is impotent to understand how it works in our daily lives. Therefore, computer programming is a necessary skill for everyone to have. Learning this skill is important as it builds critical thinking and algorithmic problem solving skills. These are important life skills as they allow people to better contribute to society. This means that anyone, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would allow schools to implement curriculums that teach computer programming and other programs (like Microsoft Office, etc.) in parallel as students get into higher grades. A counter argument to this would be that computers and computer programming is too complicated for students of such a young age to learn. While it is true that programming in a professional setting involves learning complicated programming languages and syntax, this doesn t mean it s not possible for students in grades as early as kindergarten to learn basic programming skills. For example, various Educational programming languages (EPLs), such as Scratch and E toys, have been developed for K 12 students . . . These EPLs use a tile scripting based on a graphic user interface as a coding method, instead of typing text commands. This makes the instructions easy to learn and helps students reduce syntax errors (Shim 1). Therefore, integrating computer programming into even the earliest grades in school would be possible. Another counter argument to integrating computer programming in school is that kids, especially young ones, tend to spend too much time on computers and other electronic devices, and frequently spending time on computers to learn computer programming will only encourage this. It is true that if computer programming was taught in schools, this would make it so kids are introduced to computers at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kafka has been known to be one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. The retrofit therefore reduces the total energy purchased from the grid, but it also modifies the hourly electrical demand profile. Both pieces of information are required to compute the savings, because it is assumed that the grid pricing is demand sensitive, such that the price per kWh each month is a function of the load factor for that month. Load factor is defined on a monthly basis as the ratio of the average power consumption for the month divided by the peak hourly power consumption. The load factor measures the consistency of the demand over time, with high load factors indicating a more consistent demand that is less costly for the utility to provide. The monthly per kWh grid price is therefore inversely related to load factor. To determine how the building retrofit would modify the grid electrical demand, the original aggregate hourly demand is split, as was previously described, into heating, hot water, cooling, and baseline plug load profiles. The cooling profile is scaled by 80% to estimate the electrical load for the more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Impact Of Religion On Human Culture For centuries, human culture has been influenced in a multitude of ways by many means but none have had such an impact as religion. It has had countless wars waged in its name, even to this day. Billions believe in some divine being(s) that transcends the ugliness of humanity that s omnipotent and omniscient. Religion became a guide and a representation of how our lives should be led. However, history has brought evidence that made it possible for this notion to be criticized and rather, flipped. The majority of the human race believes that religion shaped our culture but it is rather the other way round, in that the culture of our ancestors, the Mesopotamians and the Hebrews shaped religion to explain the natural world and as a reflection of their lives and tribulations. During the age of Mesopotamia, climate change was still a key factor in the survival of civilizations but did not work on a global scale as it did before during cooling and warming periods. One day of bad weather could destroy a year s worth of crops for a family and displace them without any means of self sustainability. It would be a millennium until food could be brought to the area again. To the average human living in Mesopotamia at the time, this would have been chaos, living in fear for when everything that was earned would be destroyed. This erratic behavior of nature could not be summed up as one god for there were no rhythms or patterns to be discern so to compensate for that, each aspect of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of these classes include United States history, Government, and World History. Although, there is a lack of any classes dealing with local history. State history alone only receives attention in the elementary school system and about a week in Government class. All school systems should include, in the required classes to take to receive a high school diploma, a local history class, so that the students may have a knowledge of the place where they live. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They should rather figure out their own history and help out the poor amateurs trying their best to put the puzzle together. Furthermore, local history in general needs to be cared about more. Like said before, the top level of prestige among historians is occupied by those who teach African or Asian history (Hicken 1). This prestige is also portrayed very well by Herb Block s political cartoon Except for Those of Us Who Are above It. Which, displays bureaucrats sitting on top of Washington above everyone else, with a caption Equal Justice Under Law. Which, shows that those of more important roles consider themselves better than the lower rules. All together, this shows that after people spend countless years in school and in the work force being a historian, they are studying the histories abroad and of more accomplishment, rather than their own with facts that have no meaning. Although, even major historians have hypocritically given themselves over to the study of some phase of history which, in the long run, amounted to only a minor aspect of a larger problem (Hicken 1). Yet, they ridicule local history and those who research it. These issues amongst historians are the major underlying issues when proposing the concept of a local history class. Now, looking at local history in a more positive light; it has an impression on the current environments people are surrounded with. What has happened in the past has shaped the places people ... The Truth About War Revealed in the Film, The Thin Red Line Terrence Malick s The Thin Red Line (1998) is a film that examines the Guadalcanal Battle of World War II, looking past the physical results of the violence, in order to uncover the deeper truths and ramifications of war. The film conveys themes and ideologies that are somewhat uncommon to war films, especially WW II films. In this dark, surreal, journey, Malick takes us inside the minds of soldiers experiencing this battle to capture a remote pacific island from the Japanese. It merely accepts that there is war, and comments on the effects of it, letting our emotional and mental response do the rest. It examines war not through the battles and through the violence, but through the emotions of the soldiers. Geoffrey Macnab, another reviewer of the film, agrees. He states that ìIn The Thin Red Line, the battle scenes merely provide the backdrop to Malickís inquiries into military behavior and the nature of evil. (Macnab 54). Voice overs throughout the film allow us to get into the heads of these men. One soldier prays while another man day dreams about his wife in the U.S. One soldier, after standing among the remains of dozens of dead bodies after his company has taken a Japanese stronghold, reflects on how the bodies have become no different than those of ìdead dogs.î War, then, becomes an unnatural force.
