INTRODUCTION
The basic principle of constructivism is that learners construct knowledge for
themselves while they learn. There are two different forms of constructivism – cognitive
constructivism and social constructivism. The major methods of learning supported by
constructivists are discovery learning, brainstorming, concept mapping etc. While the methods
suggested by social constructivist include reciprocal teaching, peer teaching etc. Some of the
important constructivists methods of instruction are cooperative learning, collaborative
learning, peer tutoring etc.
CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING
Co-operativelearning is a successfullearning strategy in which small teams, each
with different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improvetheir
understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsiblenotonly for
learning what is taught but also for helping team mates learn, thus creating an
atmosphereof achievement. Students work through the assignment until all
group members successfully understand and complete it.
According to Johnson ,cooperativelearning is the instructional use of small groups
through which students work together to maximize their own and each other’s
learning.
ADVANTAGES OF CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING
 It promotes student learning and academic achievement.
 Increase student retention.
 Enhance student satisfaction and their learning experience.
 Help students develop skills in oral communication.
 Develop students social skills.
 Promote student self esteem.
 Help to promote positive relations.
LIMITATIONS
 Cooperative learning is a time consuming method compared to many other
methods.
 In cooperativelearning session, the instructor has got lesser control over
the learner.
 Since the classroomwillbe made up of several small group , the noise level
will escalate.
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves group
of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task or create a product.
Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the
participants talk among themselves. It is through the talk that learning occurs.
Collaborative learning is a relationship among learners that requires positive interdependence
(a sense of sink or swim together), individual accountability, interpersonal skills, face to face
promotive interaction and processing.
ADVANTAGES OF COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
 Develops higher level of thinking skills.
 Promote studentfaculty interaction and familiarity.
 Increase students retention.
 Builds self esteem in students.
 Enhance student satisfaction with the learning experience.
 Promotes a positive attitude towards the subjectmatter.
 Develop oralcommunication skill.
 Promotes positive racerelationship.
 Creates an environmentof active, involved, exploratory learning.
 Uses a team approach to problem solving while maintaining individual
accountability.
 Encourages studentresponsibility for learning.
LIMITATIONS
 Usually there is no sufficient time for true collaboration.
 In collaborative learning , teacher may not be able to monitor groups
effectively.
 Teachers may have a difficult time going frominstructor to facilitator.
CONCLUSION
Cooperative and collaborative learning are two learning styles recommended for
sound learning as well as the development of the cognitive structureand
construction of knowledge. Both aim at active participation in the learning
process .Thatis ,both reflect the messageof participatory learning in which the
learner are given the role of active participants , instead of remaining as passive
passive receipients of knowledgetransmitted by some expert.
