TEACHER AS A FACILITATOR
FACILITATOR
• A Facilitator is a person who helps a group of people to work together better,
understand their common objectives and plan how to achieve these
objectives,during meetings or discussions. In doing so, the facilitator remain
“neutral”, meaning they do not take a particular position in the discussion.
(Wikipedia)
• Someone who helps to bring about an outcome ( such as learning, productivity or
communication) by providing indirect or unobtrusive assitance , guidance , or
supervision.( Merriam-Webster)
• Teachers – leader in the classroom
• Shift in role – sole classroom leader to one who aids students in learning themselves.
• Doesn’t operate under the traditional concept of teaching – guide,assist students in learning
themselves.
• Traditional concept of teaching – teacher-centric system – king of the classroom
• Now – student-centric – child most important person.
ROLE
• The function of the teacher is to concentrate on creating a classroom climate to facilitate
self-intiated learning , the freedom to learn and learning to be free.
• Students must be free and responsible.
• Teacher accepts others feelings as his own.
• A teacher should value the feelings and opinion of his students.
• Teacher’s duty – provide resources and raw materials ; guide and assist them ; to promote
independent study habits.
PRESENTATION VS. FACILITATION
PRESENTATION
• The presenter delivers information, usually
through a lecture.
• The presenter is the expert sharing their
knowledge of the subject matter.
• The presenter spends most of the time talking.
• The presenter Is usually on a stage or at the
front of the room.
FACILITATION
• The facilitator enhances learning for everyone,
usually through discussion or activities such as role
plays.
• The facilitator provides opportunities for members of
the group to share knowledge and learn from one
another.
• The facilitator spends most of the time asking
questions, encouraging others to speak, and
answering learner’s questions during activities.
• The facilitator is usually moving around the
classroom to help address learner’s questions or
monitor how activities are progressing.
FACILITATOR SKILLS
• Listening.
• Questioning.
• Problem solving.
• Resolving conflict.
• Using a participative style.
• Accepting others.
• Empathizing.
• Leading..
OUTCOME
• Learning lifelong process – students become independent learner’s.
• Student-centered education – students discover – autonomous, spontaneous
,creative and self-disciplined.
• Gain personal psychological maturity, learn mutual respect and the value of co-
operation and friendship.
