Of Teacher
Introduction
A teacher (also called a school teacher or, in some contents, an educator) is a
personwho helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values.
The National policy on Education (1986) States: “The status of the teacher reflects
the socio-cultural ethos of a society. It is said that no people can rise above the
level its teachers.” The Status which teachers enjoy and the dignity of the
profession are influenced, to a great extent, by the numerous roles the teachers
play.
Content
Multiple roles of teachers are:
1. Teachers as a leader
2. Knowledge worker
3. Facilitator
4. Supervisor
5. Mentor
6. Scaffolder
7. Social Engineer
8. Reflective practitioner
Teacher as a leader
Teacher leaders assume a wide range of roles to support school and student
success. The following 10 roles are a sampling of the many ways teachers can
contribute to their school’s success.
 Resources Provider
 Instructional Specialist
 Curriculum Specialist
 Classroom Supporter
 Learning Facilitator
 Mentor
 Schoolleader
 Data coach
 Catalyst for change
 Learner
Knowledge worker
Knowledge worker are workers whose main capital is knowledge, Typical
examples may include software engineers, doctors, engineers, scientists, public
accountants, lawyers and teachers, because they think for a living. Teacher as a
knowledge worker means doing as much as possible to support teachers in
classrooms and integrating technology in a thoughtful way. Help teachers to
embrace technology in instruction knowledge worker are people who make their
living, understanding, analyzing, developing, applying, and communicating their
expertise in a specific subject area.
Facilitator
The teacher is not only a leader of the group but he is also a facilitator of learning,
as a facilitator of learning he must:
 Be warm, understanding and self controlling.
 Listen attentively and accept students feeling and ideas.
 Observe students reactions skillfully
 Be responsible, systematic, flexible and work oriented
 Ask questions to students, praise and encourage when necessary
 Explain things clearly and reward fairly
 Lecture, demonstrate and explain things with examples
 Encourage independent study habits
 Maintain balance of direction and freedom for students
 Be stimulating and imaginative in his approachto classroombehavior
Supervisor
The supervisor is the person responsible for the coordination of overall supervision
of experiences. The supervisor will make classroom observations of the student
teachers and will offer support and guidance to the cooperating teachers.
Supervisor will serve as a resource for professional seminars and ongoing program
evaluation.
Responsibilities of a teacher supervisor are:
 Meat monitoring requirements
 Ensure properlines of communication are established
 Regularly review the students daily log
 Submit student marks for the courses of the study in which they are enrolled
The supervision will promote student teacher professional development by
observing student teacher during the teaching experience and providing oral and
written feedback to student teachers after each formal observation.
Mentor
Mentors serve as role models; accelerate new teachers to a new school, and advise
new teachers and about instruction. Curriculum procedure, practices and politics,
Mentors generally provide support and guidance to new teachers as well as
information.
The mentor may provide any or all of the following:
 Diminishing the fear that comes from having to go it alone.
 Providing supportfor developing course
 Provide demonstrations of good teaching practices
 Provide timely and constructive feedback on the mentee’s performance
 Encourage the mentee to be self confident
 Be a colleague
 Interpreting departmental policies and practices
Scaffolder
Educational scaffolding is a teaching method that enables a student to solve a
problem, carryout a task or achieve a goal through a gradual shedding of outside
assistance. Scaffold enlists the instructor as an activator whose role is to facilitate
the student’s incremental mastery of a concept.
Teacher’s duty in scaffolding includes:
 Provide tasks that enable the learner to build on prior knowledge and
internalize concepts.
 Motivate the student’s interest related to the task
 Simply the task to make it more manageable and achievable for a child
 Encourage ongoing dialogue, careful listening and reading.
Social Engineer
Socialization is the process involved when young children are becoming aware of
society and learning how they are expected to behave. It is the process that
prepares human belongs to function in social life. One of the main roles a teacher
plays in socialization in a child’s life is by direct examples set by the teacher in the
classroom. It is the teacher’s responsibility to nourish a child cognitive and
physical need.
Teacher’s role in socializing a child:
 The teachers must ensure a safe and healthy social environment in which the
children may imbibe desirable values and freedom, equality, integrity,
honesty, patriotism, etc.
 There should be close corporation between the teacher and parents on
matters relating to the propersocialization of the children
 The teachers should respect the personality of children
Reflective Practitioner
Teaching is an act of thoughtfulness, i.e. teaching means being continuously
thoughtful and how to support the learning of others, as well as our own.
Thoughtful teachers engage in reflective practice as a way to think about their
teaching and about the ways to continually develop and implement curriculum that
is personally meaningful and culturally relevant to the students. Teacher should
interpret their everyday practice through the pursuit of reflective self development.
Conclusion
The teacher in the emerging Indian Society has a very pivotal role in the social
reconstitution and the transmission of wisdom, knowledge and experience of one
generation to another. The teacher’s role is to design learning experience that help
students understanding concepts and own the knowledge they construct. Teachers
always try to retain their personal support with every child. Today role of the
teacher is multifaceted. Teachers are encouraged to really tune in to how each
individual student learn and try to really challenge and inspire them to learn.

  • 3. Introduction A teacher (also called a school teacher or, in some contents, an educator) is a personwho helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. The National policy on Education (1986) States: “The status of the teacher reflects the socio-cultural ethos of a society. It is said that no people can rise above the level its teachers.” The Status which teachers enjoy and the dignity of the profession are influenced, to a great extent, by the numerous roles the teachers play. Content Multiple roles of teachers are: 1. Teachers as a leader 2. Knowledge worker 3. Facilitator 4. Supervisor 5. Mentor 6. Scaffolder 7. Social Engineer 8. Reflective practitioner Teacher as a leader Teacher leaders assume a wide range of roles to support school and student success. The following 10 roles are a sampling of the many ways teachers can contribute to their school’s success.  Resources Provider
  • 4.  Instructional Specialist  Curriculum Specialist  Classroom Supporter  Learning Facilitator  Mentor  Schoolleader  Data coach  Catalyst for change  Learner Knowledge worker Knowledge worker are workers whose main capital is knowledge, Typical examples may include software engineers, doctors, engineers, scientists, public accountants, lawyers and teachers, because they think for a living. Teacher as a knowledge worker means doing as much as possible to support teachers in classrooms and integrating technology in a thoughtful way. Help teachers to embrace technology in instruction knowledge worker are people who make their living, understanding, analyzing, developing, applying, and communicating their expertise in a specific subject area. Facilitator The teacher is not only a leader of the group but he is also a facilitator of learning, as a facilitator of learning he must:  Be warm, understanding and self controlling.  Listen attentively and accept students feeling and ideas.  Observe students reactions skillfully  Be responsible, systematic, flexible and work oriented
  • 5.  Ask questions to students, praise and encourage when necessary  Explain things clearly and reward fairly  Lecture, demonstrate and explain things with examples  Encourage independent study habits  Maintain balance of direction and freedom for students  Be stimulating and imaginative in his approachto classroombehavior Supervisor The supervisor is the person responsible for the coordination of overall supervision of experiences. The supervisor will make classroom observations of the student teachers and will offer support and guidance to the cooperating teachers. Supervisor will serve as a resource for professional seminars and ongoing program evaluation. Responsibilities of a teacher supervisor are:  Meat monitoring requirements  Ensure properlines of communication are established  Regularly review the students daily log  Submit student marks for the courses of the study in which they are enrolled The supervision will promote student teacher professional development by observing student teacher during the teaching experience and providing oral and written feedback to student teachers after each formal observation. Mentor Mentors serve as role models; accelerate new teachers to a new school, and advise new teachers and about instruction. Curriculum procedure, practices and politics,
  • 6. Mentors generally provide support and guidance to new teachers as well as information. The mentor may provide any or all of the following:  Diminishing the fear that comes from having to go it alone.  Providing supportfor developing course  Provide demonstrations of good teaching practices  Provide timely and constructive feedback on the mentee’s performance  Encourage the mentee to be self confident  Be a colleague  Interpreting departmental policies and practices Scaffolder Educational scaffolding is a teaching method that enables a student to solve a problem, carryout a task or achieve a goal through a gradual shedding of outside assistance. Scaffold enlists the instructor as an activator whose role is to facilitate the student’s incremental mastery of a concept. Teacher’s duty in scaffolding includes:  Provide tasks that enable the learner to build on prior knowledge and internalize concepts.  Motivate the student’s interest related to the task  Simply the task to make it more manageable and achievable for a child  Encourage ongoing dialogue, careful listening and reading.   • 7. Socialization is the process involved when young children are becoming aware of society and learning how they are expected to behave. It is the process that prepares human belongs to function in social life. One of the main roles a teacher plays in socialization in a child’s life is by direct examples set by the teacher in the classroom. It is the teacher’s responsibility to nourish a child cognitive and physical need. Teacher’s role in socializing a child:  The teachers must ensure a safe and healthy social environment in which the children may imbibe desirable values and freedom, equality, integrity, honesty, patriotism, etc.  There should be close corporation between the teacher and parents on matters relating to the propersocialization of the children  The teachers should respect the personality of children Reflective Practitioner Teaching is an act of thoughtfulness, i.e. teaching means being continuously thoughtful and how to support the learning of others, as well as our own. Thoughtful teachers engage in reflective practice as a way to think about their teaching and about the ways to continually develop and implement curriculum that is personally meaningful and culturally relevant to the students. Teacher should interpret their everyday practice through the pursuit of reflective self development. Conclusion The teacher in the emerging Indian Society has a very pivotal role in the social reconstitution and the transmission of wisdom, knowledge and experience of one
  • 8. generation to another. The teacher’s role is to design learning experience that help students understanding concepts and own the knowledge they construct. Teachers always try to retain their personal support with every child. Today role of the teacher is multifaceted. Teachers are encouraged to really tune in to how each individual student learn and try to really challenge and inspire them to learn.
