Measure scratchwilson-moffat-ppig2010-final
This document evaluates the use of the Scratch programming environment to introduce programming to young children (8 years old) in their ICT class over 8 lessons. Cognitive progress was measured through class tests, and affective impact was measured through pupil and teacher feedback. The results showed that the children were able to write basic programs in Scratch and enjoyed doing so. An interview with their teacher indicated that some pupils performed surprisingly well beyond expectations. While cognitive progress was moderate, the main benefit of Scratch seemed to be that its enjoyability made learning programming a positive experience unlike traditional methods.

1. Select 10 technologies (defined below) that can be used in an educational setting/environment for each of the categories listed below. Notice that I did not say educational or instructional technologies. This is to not restrict you to that search parameter, but rather to allow you to explore critically any technology that might have a pedagogical use. Select technologies representing:

Jeremy Gutierrez and Jennifer Badeaux presented websites and apps that can be used in the classroom to engage students and reinforce lessons. They introduced Prezi, Edmodo, Scootpad and other websites for creating class pages and sharing materials. They also demonstrated apps like Three Ring for portfolios, Decide Now for randomization, and Screen Time for monitoring device use. Presenters provided information on polling sites like Exittix, Socrative and Kahoot to conduct student assessments in a game format.

- 2. Space Race Game There are thousands of different ways to introduce programming to your class in fun and interactive ways for the upcoming Hour of Code (December 8-14). While most apps and tutorials do require internet connected computers or mobile devices, it does not mean that schools without this level of technology cannot get involved. In fact, coding with paper can be an even more engaging and meaningful way to introduce students to early programming concepts. The Game The object of the Space Race game is to navigate your rocket ship safely through the galaxy of aliens and satellites, all the way to the moon. Using thepre-made coding blocks students can create a ‘program’ of directions for their rocket to follow and complete its mission. I would encourage you to have your students work together as pairs or groups on this exercise. One student can set up the ‘course’ using the printed character blocks (Earth, moon, aliens, satellites). Their partner can then attempt to program the solution using the printed code blocks, and together they can ‘execute’ the program to navigate the ship. This not only gets your students working together but it will help them practice some of the collaborative aspects of coding and problem solving.
