Colombia has experienced sustained armed conflict between guerrilla groups seeking to overthrow the government and paramilitary groups allied with it. Two guerrilla groups were formed in the 1960s-1970s to oppose the government and political system, and have engaged in criminal activities like kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking to fund their operations. The conflict has caused immense loss of life and instability over decades.
