The Mexican Revolution began in 1910 in response to the oppressive dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz, who ruled Mexico for over 30 years. Diaz failed to uphold political and economic reforms, imprisoning and killing those who opposed him. In 1911, opposition leader Francisco Madero called for revolt against Diaz and promised democratic reforms including land redistribution and term limits if elected. Led by Madero, Emiliano Zapata, and others, revolutionary forces defeated Diaz's army in 1911, forcing Diaz into exile and allowing Madero to become president.
