OBJECTIVES
Identify the relationship between
altitude and climate.
Explain how altitude affects climate.
Give the importance of altitude in
categorizing the temperature of a
particular area.
“Altitude”
Height of an area
above sea level
“Let’s Q and A”
Mt. Everest
1.Where do people
usually go during
summer vacation?
2.Why do they go there?
3.Why is it cold there?
Activity No. 2
“The Higher the Colder”
pp. 186
1. Which place is the
coldest?
Baguio
2. Which place is the
hottest?
Manila
3. Based on the data,
what is the relationship
between altitude and
temperature of a place?
As the altitude increases,
the temperature
decreases
Mt. Kilimanjaro
Baguio City
Mt. Apo
1.The air temperature decreases as the
altitude increases. Places with higher
elevations have cold climates.
2. For every 1000 m, there is a drop
of 6.5 degree Celsius. The decrease
in air temperature is due to the
decrease in air pressure.
1. Which best describes altitude?
a)Altitude affects or influences climate in one
particular way: the higher one goes, the colder it
gets.
b)Altitude is the distance above sea level.
c)Altitude does not affect the temperature of a
specific area.
d)Altitude has a specific effects in the temperature
of a place.
2. Which of the following is TRUE about the
relationship of altitude to climate?
a)The air temperature decreases as the altitude increases.
Places with higher elevations have cold climates.
b) When an area is farther from the equator, the air
temperature is lower resulting in a cold climate.
c).When an area is closer to the equator, the air
temperature is higher which results in warm climate.
d)None of the above.
3. What is the relationship of altitude to
climate?
a. The air temperature decreases as the
altitude increases.
b. The air temperature increases as the
altitude increases.
c. The air temperature decreases as the
altitude decreases.
d. None of the above
4. Why is that during summer, many people
visit Baguio City?
a)Because of the amusement parks.
b)Because of the cold climate.
c)Because of the strawberry.
d)Because of the flowers.
5. Which is not true in the following statements?
a)At higher altitudes, the air is less dense and air
molecules are spread out and less likely to collide.
b)A higher location in the mountains has lower
average temperatures than one at the base of the
mountains.
c)As the altitude increases, the temperature
decreases.
d.As the altitude increases, the temperature
increases.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Which part of the earth receives most of the sun’s rays? What is the relationship of climate to latitude? As the latitude increases, temperature decreases “ WHEN AN AREA IS FARTHER FROM THE EQUATOR, THE AIR TEMPERATURE IS LOWER RESULTING IN A COLD CLIMATE. WHEN AN AREA IS CLOSER TO THE EQUATOR, THE AIR TEMPERATURE IS HIGHER WHICH RESULTS IN WARM CLIMATE.” And it talks about Latitude… What is latitude? It is the specific North to south grid p ositions on earth ranging from 0 degree at the equator to 90 degree at the poles.
  • #6 The students will locate the Philippines in the globe. Guide questions: 1. To what regions is the Philippines located? 2. What climate do we experience now?
  • #7 The higher the area is , the colder the temperature.
  • #9 What mountain is in the picture? Mt. Everest the earths highest mountain above sea level Where does it located? China between Nepal and Tibet What do you think why the peak of the mountain is covered by ice? It is because air pressure decreases with altitude we will further understand about that as we go on in our discussion. Location at the higher altitude have colder temperature.
  • #12 1 whole sheet of paper Open your book on page 186. read the activity no.2 write and answer the guide questions. Is the climate of these cities the same? No, they differ from one another
  • #18  can we say that the altitude of a place affects the air temperature.?
  • #19 Why the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro is covered with snow although it is located at the equator? It is located in Africa and found near the equator…. So we can conclude that it is warm in this area. Mt. Kilimanjaro stands 5890 meters above sea level and we can see that it was covered by snow how is this possible? It is because the earths temperature decreases as the altitude increases
  • #20 Climate means the average weather conditions in a place over many years. Climate varies from one area to another What is the climate of the Philippines? (rainy and dry season) Tropical and maritime which means ……..high temperature, humidity and abundant rainfall Why is that during summer, may people visit Baguio City? Obviously, the reason is the cold climate there.
  • #21 Why do mountaineers wear thick clothes when they go up a mountain? At higher elevations, there is less air. The air molecules are farther apart, thus making the air less dense. Less dense air cannot absorb much heat, making air temperature decreases. Ultimately, the decrease in air temperature also decrease the air pressure. The further you are from the earths surface the less gravity you will experience.
