The circulatory system of the earthworm consists of blood vessels, hearts, loops, and capillaries. The blood contains respiratory pigment hemoglobin dissolved in plasma. There are two types of blood vessels - collecting and distributing. The arrangement of blood vessels differs between the intestinal region behind the 13th segment versus the anterior 13 segments. In the intestinal region, blood is collected by the dorsal vessel and distributed by the ventral vessel via vessels that supply the intestine, body wall, and nephridia. In the anterior region, blood is collected by lateral vessels and distributed via hearts and loops between dorsal, ventral, and supraesophageal vessels that supply the gut.
