The circulatory system consists of the cardiovascular system and lymphatic system. The cardiovascular system includes the heart and blood vessels that circulate blood throughout the body. It transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and immune cells and removes carbon dioxide and wastes. The circulatory system is divided into the systemic and pulmonary circuits. Arteries branch into smaller arterioles and capillaries, where gas and nutrient exchange occurs, before venules and veins return blood to the heart. The lymphatic system drains excess fluid from tissues and transports it back to the bloodstream.
