This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching first grade students the months of the year using ASSURE methods. The teacher will analyze the diverse learners in the special education classroom and select methods like categorizing months by color, dancing, or pointing to engage different learning styles. A variety of materials like paper cutouts, songs, and an open space will be used. Students will rotate through stations and the teacher will communicate with each group to ensure participation. Evaluation will match how students performed and new strategies will be implemented if needed to help all students succeed.

ASSURE Methods Activity
Analyze Learners- My classroom is a special education classroom. The learners in my classroom
are first graders, and there are ten boys and seven girls. Seventy percent of those seventeen are
white, twenty percent are African-American, and ten percent are Latino. Seven of my seventeen
students have mild to severe ADHD, which leads to them sometimes act out more. In preparing
my lesson, I will have to be aware of that, and do up beat activities to keep them on target to
succeed.
State Objectives- I am confident that my students will be able to fully categorize the months of
the year at the end of the school year with ninety percent accuracy. They will do this by either
categorizing each month by a different color, categorizing them by an object, dancing their
energy out to a song about the months, getting up and pointing to the different months on the
calendar, classifying their favorite hobbies with what month they are in, or by jumping from
month to month and reciting them on the carpet.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials- Because my class is so widely diverse, I will make sure
to provide each student with the method that helps them best. Some of my students may have
autism. Categorizing the months by color or object would help them the most, but that would not
help my students with ADHD. For them, jumping to the different months on the carpet and
reciting them, dancing their energy out to a song they sing about the months, or even getting up
and pointing to the months on the calendar would not only help them learn the months
effectively, but also help them be able to release some energy. Media will be used to play songs,

2. but most of my students will not want to look at a PowerPoint for a long enough period of time.
The materials I will be using will mostly be open space for moving around. I will use some paper
cutouts for those that will learn by matching the months with colors.
Utilize Media and Materials- I will make sure that I have all pieces cut out and organized in
baggies for some of my students. I then will make sure the song works, and that I get the cut out
paper of the months to stick to the carpet in some way. I will then allot five minutes to each
station, and the students will switch one time. That way each student gets to try a different
station to see which helps them learn the best.
Require Learner Participation- In order to make sure my students are successful and all
participating, I will go around to each individual group and talk with them. I think
communication is essential for learning new material. I will join in as well, so they feel as though
I care about them, and also encourage them that they can learn it! I believe effective teaching
comes by truly caring about your students and not just putting on an act.
Evaluate and Revise- I will evaluate each of my students in the same way they performed the
task, because I believe that will be the least bit nerve-racking for them. If some of my students
are not successful in learning the months, I will not give up. I will keep trying by implementing
new strategies, and most importantly showing them that they can do it! That is the key!
