A – Analyze the Learners
General
 First grade; 6-7 years old; special education
 10 boys, 7 girls
 70% Caucasian, 20% African American, 10% Latino

 Students do not know the months
 Might know months in a different language
 Cannot assume they know months/ask them to say months they know to get a feel
for what they already know

 Since 7 of them have ADHD, each student will probably learn in a different way
 Must take into consideration to ensure all students grasp the concept

S – State Objective
Students will recite the months of the year through singing a song from a video,
segmenting the months into three groups of four, and working in groups to put months in order
with 100% accuracy in two weeks.

U – Utilize Media and Materials
 I will make sure I know the song so I can sing along with it. I will have the index
cards prepared so that I can have them easily accessible. I will predetermine the

2. groups so time is not wasted. I will also make sure the index cards are laminated
for easier use. The index cards will be in groups of three based on the seasons.
January, February, and March (Winter) will be together. April, May, and June
(Spring) will be together. July, August, and September (Summer) will be together.
And lastly, October, November, and December (Fall) will be together. That way
the students can think about the weather associated with the month and it will
make it easier for the students to remember. I will have a poster hanging in the
room that the students can refer to at any time the students may need it.
 The YouTube video will be utilized as a way to get students up and moving,
especially those with ADHD. The song will also help them with learning the
months of the year.
 The laminated index cards will be utilized as a way for the students to put the
months in order and also segment them based on seasons of the year.
 The students will be grouped cooperatively and students with ADHD will be
dispersed throughout the groups so they are not all in one group.
R – Require Learner Participation
 Give students points for participation
 Have a contest to see which group can place the months in order the fastest
 Praise students for trying and participating
 Encourage students even when incorrect
E – Evaluate and Revise
 I will assess formatively throughout the entire lesson and make sure my students
are staying on task and are actively engaged, while also grasping concept.
 I will have students apply what they have learned through segmenting the months
and placing them in order in groups.
 Through the practice of formative assessment, I will have insight on which
activities are helping my students understand the concept.
 If I find that the activities are not helping with the concept, I will create new ones
that will work better for the next day.
 At the end of the week, I will call the children up one by one and ask them to
either tell me the months of the year orally or they can put them in order with the
index cards. The way they choose to tell me the months of the year will be based
on their learning style and ability. I will have a checklist that will be placed in my
assessment notebook at the end of the week.
