The shifted multiplicative model (SHMM) is used in an exploratory step-down method for identifying subsets of environments in which genotypic effects are "separable" from environmental effects. Subsets of environments are chosen on the basis of a SHMM analysis of the entire data set. SHMM analyses of the subsets
may indicate a need for further subdivision and/or suggest that a different subdivision at the previous stage should be tried. The process continues until SHMM analysis indicates that a SHMM with only one multiplicative term and its "point of concurrence" outside (left or right) of the cluster of data points adequately fits the data in all subsets.
Crops undergo artificially DNA modifications for improvements are considered as genetically modified (GM) crops. These modifications could be in indigenous DNA or by the introduction of foreign DNA as transgenes. There are 29 different crops and fruit trees in 42 countries, which have been successfully modified for various traits like herbicide tolerance, insect/pest resistance, disease resistance and quality improvement. GM crops are grown worldwide and its area is significantly increasing every year. Many countries have very strict rules and regulations for GM crops and are also a trade barrier in some situations. Hence, identification and testing of crops for GM contents are important for the identity and legitimacy of the transgene to simplify the international trade. Normally, molecular identification is performed at three different levels, i.e., DNA, RNA and protein, and each level have its own importance in testing the nature and type of GM crops. In this chapter, the current scenario of GM crops and different molecular testing tools are described in brief.
A genetic marker is a gene or DNA sequence with a known location on a chromosome and associated with a particular gene or trait. It can be described as a variation, which may arise due to mutation or alteration in the genomic loci that can be observed. A genetic marker may be a short DNA sequence, such as a sequence surrounding a single base-pair change (single nucleotide polymorphism, SNP), or a long one, like mini & microsatellites.
Extranuclear inheritance or cytoplasmic inheritance is the transmission of genes that occur outside the nucleus. It is found in most eukaryotes and is commonly known to occur in cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts or from cellular parasites like viruses or bacteria. Determining the contribution of organelle genes to plant phenotype is hampered by several factors, including the paucity of variation in the plastid and mitochondrial genomes. Mitochondria are organelles which function to transform energy as a result of cellular respiration. Chloroplasts are organelles which function to produce sugars via photosynthesis in plants and algae. The genes located in mitochondria and chloroplasts are very important for proper cellular function, yet the genomes replicate independently of the DNA located in the nucleus, which is typically arranged in chromosomes that only replicate one time preceding cellular division. The extranuclear genomes of mitochondria and chloroplasts however replicate independently of cell division. They replicate in response to a cell's increasing energy needs which adjust during that cell's lifespan. There is consistent difference between the results from reciprocal crosses; generally only the trait from female parent is transmitted. In most cases, there is no segregation in the F2 and subsequent generations.
Plant genetic engineering is one of the key technologies for crop improvement as well as an emerging approach for producing recombinant proteins in plants. Both plant nuclear and plastid genomes can be genetically modified, yet fundamental functional differences between the eukaryotic genome of the plant cell nucleus and the prokaryotic-like genome of the plastid will have an impact on key characteristics of the resulting transgenic organism. So, which genome, nuclear or plastid, to transform for the desired transgenic phenotype? In this paper we compare the advantages and drawbacks of engineering plant nuclear and plastid genomes to generate transgenic plants with the traits of interest, and evaluate the pros and cons of their use for different biotechnology and basic research applications. The chloroplast is a pivotal organelle in plant cells and eukaryotic algae to carry out photosynthesis, which provides the primary source of the world’s food. The expression of foreign genes in chloroplasts offers several advantages over their expression in the nucleus: high-level expression, no position effects, no vector sequences allowing stable transgene expression. In addition, transgenic chloroplasts are generally not transmitted through pollen grains because of the cytoplasmic localization. In the past two decades, great progress in chloroplast engineering has been made.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. 3. Plant Habit
Chickpea is a herbaceous annual plant is mostly covered with glandular or
non glandular hairs.
Based on seed size and color, cultivated chickpeas are of two types
1. Macrosperma (kabuli type). Large (100-seed mass >25 g), round or ramhead,and cream -
colored.
2. Microsperma (desi type). small and angular in shape. The seed color varies
from cream, black, brown, yellow to green.
4. Seed and germination
Chickpea seeds have a seed coat, two cotyledons, and an embryo. The seed coat consists of
two layers, the outer testa and the inner tegmen, and a hilum. The hilum is the point of
attachment of the seed to the pod.
The embryo consists of an axis and two fleshy cotyledons (Fig. 1b to d). The pointed end of
the axis is the radicle and the feathery end the plumule.
Chickpea seeds germinate at an optimum temperature (28-33°C). Germination begins with
absorption of moisture and swelling of the seed. The radicle emerges first followed by the
plumule (Fig. 1e to i). The growth of the plumule produces an erect shoot and leaves, and the
radicle grows to produce the roots.
6. Root
Chickpea plants have a strong tap root system with 3 or 4 rows of lateral roots. The roots grow 1.5-2.0 m deep. Chickpea
roots bear Rhizobium nodules (Fig. 2).
Stem
The chickpea stem is erect, branched, viscous, hairy, herbaceous, green, and solid. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary
branches.
Primary branches arise from the ground level as they develop from the plumular shoot as well as the lateral branches of the
seedling.
Secondary branches develop at buds located on the primary branches.
Tertiary branches arise from the secondary branches.
Leaves
Chickpea leaves are petiolate, compound, and pseudoimparipinnate (one of the leaflets of terminal pair occupying apical
position).
Stipules
The stipules are ovate to triangular in shape and serrated (2-6 teeth).
Pubescence
The external surface of the chickpea plant, except the corolla, is densely covered with glandular
or nonglandular hairs
Inflorescence
The solitary flowers are borne in an axillary raceme.
7. Flowers
Chickpea flowers are complete and bisexual. They are white, pink,
purple or blue in color.
The axillary inflorescence is shorter than the subtending leaf.

The petals are polypetalous i.e., consisting of standard , wings, and
keel (Fig. 3b).
Androeclum
There are 10 stamens in diadelphous (9)+1 condition (Fig. 3d,e). The
filaments of nine of the stamens are fused, forming an androecial
sheath; the tenth stamen is free. The pollen grains are orange.
Gynoeclum
The ovary is monocarpellary. It is ovate with a pubescent (glandular
hairs predominate) surface. The ovary is 2-3 mm long and 1-15 mm
wide. There are 1-3 ovules, rarely 4.
8. Developmental Stages of the Bud and Flower
Eshel (1968) identified five stages of development of the bud and flower in chickpea.
Closed bud
At this stage, the stigma is immature and the anthers are still at the base of the bud.
Hooded bud
The corolla has elongated, and the anthers are about half the height of the style. The stigma is
receptive. Emasculation is done at this stage.
Half-open flower
At this stage the anthers attain the same height as the stigma, and the pollen mature just before
the dehiscence of the anthers. Self-pollination takes place at this stage while the keel petal
remains closed, preventing the entry of foreign pollen. For crossing, pollen are collected at this
stage.
Fully open flower
The anthers become shrivelled, while the standard and wing petals are fully expanded.
Fertilization takes place 24 h after pollination.
Fading flower
This is the post fertilization stage during which the ovary begins to elongate.
9. Anthesis
Opening of flower bud called anthesis.
Anthesis in chickpea is throughout the day.
Pod and Seed Development
Pod formation begins 5-6 days after fertilization. The pod is typically inflated, ending in a mucro and sometimes looking
like a thorn.
The number of pods plant-1 varies between 30 and 150, depending on the environmental conditions and the genotype.
The pod wall is 0.3 mm thick with three layers-exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp.
The exocarp is hairy and glandular.
The mesocarp has 6-8 layers of parenchyma.
The endocarp consists of 3-4 cell layers with fibers in its outermost region and 5-6 layers of parenchyma.
Pod size ranges from 15 to 30 mm in length, 7-14 mm in thickness, and 2-15 mm in width.
The number of seeds pod-1 ranges from one to two, with the maximum being three.
The seeds are ramhead or owl's-head shaped, and the surface may be smooth or wrinkled.
The two cotyledons are separated by a groove in highly wrinkled seeds.
The length of the seed ranges from 4 to 12 mm and its width from 4 to 8 mm. The seed mass varies from 0.10 to 0.75 g
seed-1.
The seed color ranges from whitish (even chalky) and cream to deep black. Many other colors like red, orange, brown,
green, and yellow may be found. The cotyledons are cream, green, or orange colored.
10. Crossing procedure

11. Pollination
Pollination is accomplished in the following ways:
1. Singh and Auckland (1975) recommended simultaneous emasculation
and pollination. They also reported that pollination can be done at any time between
08:00 and 17:00 h and also reported that 24% pod-setting when artificial pollination
was done on the same day as emasculation and 15% pod-setting when it was done one
day after emasculation.
2. Dahiya, 1974 reported if a cross is to be made involving parents of
contrasting flower color and other morphological characters, then pollination can be
done without emasculation.
The natural rate of pod-setting in chickpea lies between 18 and 59%.
Low seed-setting in chickpea is mainly due to high humidity and cloudy weather.
When crossing is successful, pod formation starts within five or six days.
Mature pods are harvested 60 days after pollination.
