CHM 141
Lets Begin . . . .
What is Inorganic chemistry ? CHM
                 141

• CHM 141-Is a class that everyone should take
  once in their life . . . .

• For Medical careers, Dental, Engineering, and
Liberal arts – or for FUN!!!
Like most experiences . . .
You have to walk away with certain
             “Stuff?”
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• By the end of the course, students will:

• Develop the capabilities to solve problems by
  combining several concepts in chemistry.

• Develop the techniques to think critically
about a problem, devise a strategy for solving
it, and assess whether the results make sense.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Be able to relate chemistry to all areas of
  science.

• Be able to “unify” the diverse topics of
  chemistry.

• “Measure and appropriately handle chemical
products and equipment” used in the
  chemistry lab.
How are science classes mastered?
• Study skills-See PDF!!

• Mainly-”
• Remember that reading 10 pages in a
chemistry textbook is not the same as reading
10 pages of a history or psychology textbook. “
Scientific text is very dense . .
• Scientific text is very dense because it contains
  formulas, graphs, illustrations, and difficult
  concepts.

• Hence, you will need to alot more time to read
  and think about your assignments.
• For example, it may take you “50 minutes to
master 5 pages” in a chemistry textbook.
These Books . . . .
Do not have these . . .
• Using your values for pressure and volume from question 3, along with the fact
that room temperature is 298 K (25oC), calculate the number of moles of the gas
    using the Ideal Gas Law.
Your text . . . . .Your best friend for
                     now!!
• Measurements
• Dimensional Analysis
• Energy and Matter
• Atoms and Elements
• Chemical reactions- first test! This has been
the same way for 80 Years!!!
Part of what You need . . .
What to expect . . .
 Lecture 80%
•
• 4 Partial Exams (the lowest grade will be dropped) 30%
• 20 -25 inclass –every day!!!!!(Grade Average) 10%
• COOPERATIVE Learning situations-WEB QUESTS
• Final Exam (cumulative) 30%
• Homeworks/ Participation 10%
• On time attendance 4%
• Homework 8%
• Participation of Recitation 8%
•
•
• Total Grade Course 100%
Web Quests are Highly efficient!!

• This WebQuest addresses the following Science Standards:
• STANDARD I: Students will understand the structure of matter.

• Objective 1: Describe the structure of matter in terms of atoms
  and molecules.
  a. Recognize that atoms are too small to see.
  b. Relate atoms to molecules (e.g., atoms combine to make
  molecules).
  c. Diagram the arrangement of particles in the physical states of
  matter (i.e., solid, liquid, gas).
Science: Mastery learning Model
• Course level objectives are defined to indicate
mastery of the subject at the course level.

• 􀂆 The substance is divided into relatively
small learning units, each with their own
 learning objectives and assessment of
 mastery.
Science: Mastery learning Model
• 􀂆 Lessons are carefully designed and
 followed. Learning materials and instructional
 strategies are identified.
by brief diagnostic tests (activities,
        assignments, projects).
• 􀂆 The results of diagnostic tests are used to
  provide supplementary instruction
• to help students overcome problems.
• 􀂆 Time to learn must be adjusted to fit
  aptitude.
• 􀂆 NO STUDENT IS TO PROCEED TO NEW MA
Principles of the Mastery Learning
               experience
• Ninety percent of students can learn what is normally
taught in schools at an A
• level if they are given enough time and appropriate
  instruction;
• Enough time means:
• Time required to demonstrate mastery of objectives.
• Appropriate instruction means:
• o Break course into units of instruction
• o Identify objectives of units.
• o Require students to demonstrate mastery of
objectives for unit beforemoving on to other units.
How to approach science classes-
    Cooperative Learning approach
• Students can work at own pace if course is so
structured, but mastery learning can be
  accomplished with group instruction.
Effective learning strategies are:
• 􀂆 Active learning strategies
• 􀂆 Constructivist learning strategies
• 􀂆 Cooperative learning strategies
Level of compentency????
• Khan Academy Videos
• Mastery of Handout
• Reasonable “level of confidence” about
  subject matter
• Comfortable about taking CHM 142????
Every day
• Lecture-Teacher centered
• Group work- Student centered-counts as
  attendence

• “When sheets are placed together: “Your
  lecture test is constructed!”
Lets begin the “MAGIC of Chemistry!”

CHM 141: An Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry

  • 1.
  • 3. Lets Begin . . . .
  • 4. What is Inorganic chemistry ? CHM 141 • CHM 141-Is a class that everyone should take once in their life . . . . • For Medical careers, Dental, Engineering, and Liberal arts – or for FUN!!!
  • 6. You have to walk away with certain “Stuff?”
  • 7. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • By the end of the course, students will: • Develop the capabilities to solve problems by combining several concepts in chemistry. • Develop the techniques to think critically about a problem, devise a strategy for solving it, and assess whether the results make sense.
  • 8. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Be able to relate chemistry to all areas of science. • Be able to “unify” the diverse topics of chemistry. • “Measure and appropriately handle chemical products and equipment” used in the chemistry lab.
  • 9. How are science classes mastered? • Study skills-See PDF!! • Mainly-” • Remember that reading 10 pages in a chemistry textbook is not the same as reading 10 pages of a history or psychology textbook. “
  • 10. Scientific text is very dense . . • Scientific text is very dense because it contains formulas, graphs, illustrations, and difficult concepts. • Hence, you will need to alot more time to read and think about your assignments. • For example, it may take you “50 minutes to master 5 pages” in a chemistry textbook.
  • 11. These Books . . . .
  • 12. Do not have these . . . • Using your values for pressure and volume from question 3, along with the fact that room temperature is 298 K (25oC), calculate the number of moles of the gas using the Ideal Gas Law.
  • 13. Your text . . . . .Your best friend for now!! • Measurements • Dimensional Analysis • Energy and Matter • Atoms and Elements • Chemical reactions- first test! This has been the same way for 80 Years!!!
  • 14. Part of what You need . . .
  • 15. What to expect . . . Lecture 80% • • 4 Partial Exams (the lowest grade will be dropped) 30% • 20 -25 inclass –every day!!!!!(Grade Average) 10% • COOPERATIVE Learning situations-WEB QUESTS • Final Exam (cumulative) 30% • Homeworks/ Participation 10% • On time attendance 4% • Homework 8% • Participation of Recitation 8% • • • Total Grade Course 100%
  • 16. Web Quests are Highly efficient!! • http://mrscienceut.net/MatterWebQuest.html • This WebQuest addresses the following Science Standards: • STANDARD I: Students will understand the structure of matter. • Objective 1: Describe the structure of matter in terms of atoms and molecules. a. Recognize that atoms are too small to see. b. Relate atoms to molecules (e.g., atoms combine to make molecules). c. Diagram the arrangement of particles in the physical states of matter (i.e., solid, liquid, gas).
  • 17. Science: Mastery learning Model • Course level objectives are defined to indicate mastery of the subject at the course level. • 􀂆 The substance is divided into relatively small learning units, each with their own learning objectives and assessment of mastery.
  • 18. Science: Mastery learning Model • 􀂆 Lessons are carefully designed and followed. Learning materials and instructional strategies are identified.
  • 19. by brief diagnostic tests (activities, assignments, projects). • 􀂆 The results of diagnostic tests are used to provide supplementary instruction • to help students overcome problems. • 􀂆 Time to learn must be adjusted to fit aptitude. • 􀂆 NO STUDENT IS TO PROCEED TO NEW MA
  • 20. Principles of the Mastery Learning experience • Ninety percent of students can learn what is normally taught in schools at an A • level if they are given enough time and appropriate instruction; • Enough time means: • Time required to demonstrate mastery of objectives. • Appropriate instruction means: • o Break course into units of instruction • o Identify objectives of units. • o Require students to demonstrate mastery of objectives for unit beforemoving on to other units.
  • 21. How to approach science classes- Cooperative Learning approach • Students can work at own pace if course is so structured, but mastery learning can be accomplished with group instruction. Effective learning strategies are: • 􀂆 Active learning strategies • 􀂆 Constructivist learning strategies • 􀂆 Cooperative learning strategies
  • 22. Level of compentency???? • Khan Academy Videos • Mastery of Handout • Reasonable “level of confidence” about subject matter • Comfortable about taking CHM 142????
  • 23. Every day • Lecture-Teacher centered • Group work- Student centered-counts as attendence • “When sheets are placed together: “Your lecture test is constructed!”
  • 24. Lets begin the “MAGIC of Chemistry!”
