           two letters

K   = Potassium
 N = Nitrogen
 O = Oxygen
 Pb = Lead
 I = Iodine
 Each time you see the symbol for an element, it
  represents one atom of that element.

 either physical or chemical means

 An   atom is the smallest piece of an element

When the letters that symbolize the
 elements making up a compound
 are written together they make a
               formula

 H20    = the formula for water
 H202   = the formula for hydrogen peroxide
 CaCl2    = the formula for calcium chloride
 The  formula represents one molecule of
  the compound
Subscript numbers are small
  numbers just to the right of the
   letter of an element’s symbol

                    H 2O

 The  subscript number tells how many of
  that element are in the molecule

 Ifno subscript number is present, then
  there is one of that element
Full size numbers to the left of a
formula tell how many molecules of
        a compound there are
                     2KNO3
 This  formula indicates 2 molecules of potassium
  nitrate
 In each of the two molecules of potassium
  nitrate there is:
                   1 potassium (K)
                     1 Nitrogen (N)
                     3 Oxygen (O)
 How many atoms of each element are there in 2
         molecules of potassium nitrate?????
CHEMICAL CHANGE
When a CHEMICAL CHANGE happens,
the elements are rearranged during a
chemical reaction and new compounds are
formed.

  1. Have this slide up when kids come in…….. And have the grad. Cylinders ready to go but don’t use them until the temp. slide talking about dry ice. Intro – ask question – what are the three states of matter? If kids bring up fourth – plasma – here’s the info…. A plasma is a hot ionized gas consisting of approximately equal numbers of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. The characteristics of plasmas are significantly different from those of ordinary neutral gases so that plasmas are considered a distinct "fourth state of matter." For example, because plasmas are made up of electrically charged particles, they are strongly influenced by electric and magnetic fields (see  figure ) while neutral gases are not. An example of such influence is the trapping of energetic charged particles along geomagnetic field lines to form the Van Allen radiation belts.
